Our academic programme is founded on strong relationships, high expectations and an innate understanding of each child as an individual.

Our approach focuses on academic excellence for all. This means that we understand that every child’s learning journey is uniquely their own and each pupil is challenged and supported to achieve their potential. Learning is carefully connected across the school, ensuring progression, coherence and depth from the earliest years through to the Senior School. Teaching and learning are informed by research and evidence-based practice. Lessons are designed to be engaging, relevant and purposeful.

We place great emphasis on effort, progress and engagement. Clear systems ensure that pupils understand what success looks like, how they can improve, and how their progress is tracked and celebrated.

Academic progress is communicated clearly and regularly to parents. The curriculum is rich in both skills and knowledge and digital tools are embedded in teaching and learning in order to prepare children for the world of tomorrow.

We are ambitious for every child. Our most able pupils are stretched and challenged to prepare them for A level study and entry to leading sixth forms and universities, while pupils who require additional support receive targeted guidance. This ensures that every young person leaves Holme Grange at 16 with confidence and clear next steps.

We are dedicated to fostering a supportive, inclusive and nurturing environment in which every pupil can thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

Central to this is our ‘Form Tutor first’ approach. Every pupil benefits from high-quality, consistent and proactive support through a dedicated Form Tutor who acts as the first point of contact for wellbeing, guidance and personal development.

Our senior staff provide strong pastoral leadership, overseeing the welfare and academic progress of pupils. Working closely with Form Tutors, parents and senior leaders, our pastoral team ensures a cohesive, structured approach to care, promoting positive behaviour and a culture of respect and kindness.

We are proud of our safe and inclusive environment, underpinned by robust anti-bullying and safeguarding policies, diversity awareness programmes and meaningful student leadership opportunities. WHERE CURIOSITY GROWS

THE PRE-PREP

AGES 4–7

The Pre-Prep is a warm, family-orientated community where children are encouraged to imagine, question and delight in learning.

Guided by our belief that education is a lifelong journey towards meaning, purpose, connection and wisdom, the Pre-Prep years provide a joyful and secure bridge between early childhood and more formal learning. Good manners, kindness and care for others are highly valued, creating an environment in which children feel confident to take risks, ask questions and explore new ideas. Teaching is both rigorous and fun; pupils are challenged and stretched through high expectations, while being encouraged to wonder, ask “What if?” and “Why?”, and develop a genuine love of learning.

QUESTION, LEARN IMAGINE

Reception pupils are taught within The Hive, a purpose-built space that offers a calm and nurturing environment, while still connecting them to the wider school community. The curriculum follows the revised Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, encompassing the seven areas of learning, with Sport, ICT and Music taught by specialist teachers.

In Years 1 and 2, pupils spend most of their time in classrooms within the main school, building on earlier learning through subject-based and cross-curricular teaching.

Individual targets support both academic progress and personal development, with French introduced in Year 2 by a specialist teacher.

Pre-Prep pupils benefit from small class sizes, so every child is well-known. What is more, pupils can take advantage of the extensive facilities and clubs which the school has to offer. Weekly library sessions, frequent one-to-one reading, and thoughtfully designed homework ensure strong home-school partnership and outstanding preparation for the next stage of the Holme Grange journey.

THE PREP SCHOOL AGES 7–11

The Prep School at Holme Grange is a vibrant phase of our all-through journey, where pupils are prepared to thrive amid the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century.

Rooted in our belief that education is a lifelong journey towards meaning, purpose, connection and wisdom, the Prep years lay the foundations for confidence, independence and compassion.

Learning in the Prep School is shaped by challenge, exploration and enrichment. Pupils are encouraged to think deeply, ask questions and engage thoughtfully with both the natural and digital worlds. Our curriculum extends beyond the National Curriculum, offering a rich blend of academic rigour and creative breadth, including Drama, Outdoor Learning, Public Speaking, Current Affairs, Music, Food Technology and a wide range of sports. Trips, cultural visits and annual residential experiences deepen understanding, build resilience and inspire curiosity.

Pupil Voice sits at the heart of Prep School life. Through school parliament and also through regular meetings with form teachers where pupils reflect on their progress, set meaningful targets and take increasing responsibility for their learning. Clear expectations around effort and self-assessment help children develop self-awareness and pride in their achievements.

As pupils progress, opportunities for leadership and service grow. From classroom responsibilities to whole-school roles such as Head Boy, Head Girl, Heads of Council, Peer Mentor and Poet Laureate, pupils learn

to contribute positively to their community. Sustainability is a core part of life at the Prep School, with many opportunities for pupils to take part in initiatives and gain awards.

Supported by a dedicated team of specialist teachers, pupils are seamlessly prepared for a smooth transition to our Senior School. Through increasing subject specialism, independent learning skills and pastoral continuity, children move forward with confidence, familiarity and a strong sense of belonging, ready to flourish in the next stage of their Holme Grange journey.

A tailored careers programme provides pupils with the skills, knowledge and confidence to explore their future pathways.

YEARS 7 & 8: BUILDING STRONG FOUNDATIONS

The transition into Year 7 is one of the most significant steps in a child’s school journey. We work closely with pupils during these early senior years to ensure they feel secure, supported and excited by new opportunities. A strong focus is placed on developing effective study skills, independence and a positive work ethic. Pupils are encouraged to be creative problem-solvers, to take on early leadership opportunities, and to engage fully with school life, laying strong foundations for future success.

ASPIRE AND THRIVE

YEAR 9: EXPLORATION AND FIRM FOUNDATIONS

Year 9 is a year of discovery which lays firm foundations for the upcoming GCSE years. Pupils experience a wide range of subjects, allowing them to identify interests, strengths and passions before making informed GCSE options choices. Clear guidance on effort and progress, alongside regular self-reflection, helps pupils develop self-awareness and responsibility.

YEARS 10 & 11: GCSE SUCCESS

In Years 10 and 11, pupils embark on their GCSE courses with confidence and clarity. Careful guidance ensures that subject choices align with individual interests, abilities and future aspirations. Most pupils study nine GCSEs (with BTECs in Animal Care and Music also available), following a broad and balanced curriculum that keeps pathways open. Throughout these years, pupils benefit from personalised support, monitoring and motivation from our team of specialist teachers to help them achieve their best. Further detailed information about our GCSE programme and subjects can be found in the Options Choices Booklet.

THE DIGITAL WORLD

We prepare pupils to thrive in an increasingly digital world by developing confidence, understanding and responsibility from an early age.

Learning about technology begins from Nursery, where pupils study ICT as part of a broad and balanced curriculum. Through age-appropriate experiences, children explore the opportunities and challenges of technology while learning how to stay safe online and use digital tools responsibly.

As pupils progress into the Senior School, digital learning deepens through Computer Science to GCSE, alongside the continued integration of technology across subjects. From coding and computational thinking to problem-solving and digital creativity, pupils develop the skills needed for future study and employment.

From Years 7 to 11, pupils are issued with their own device, enhancing learning through collaboration, research and personalised study, both in and beyond the classroom. Alongside technical skills, we place strong emphasis on digital citizenship, ensuring pupils understand online safety, data privacy and wellbeing.

We actively teach pupils about the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence, helping them to think critically about emerging technologies and their impact on society. In this way, Holme Grange pupils become thoughtful, informed and confident users of technology, ready to engage positively with the world in the digital age.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Outdoor learning is a valued and distinctive part of life at Holme Grange, inspiring curiosity, resilience and a deep connection to the natural world. It enables our pupils to become critical thinkers, problem solvers and explorers, learning how to assess and take risks, building resilience.

From the earliest years, pupils learn through the Forest School in the Nursery and Pre-Prep, with qualified practitioners. In the Prep School, outdoor learning continues to be an integral part of the curriculum, including a bushcraft residential.

Our extensive grounds include a school farm, Forest School and outdoor classrooms, offering pupils unique opportunities to engage with animal care and sustainability in a meaningful way. Senior pupils can study the BTEC in Animal Care, gaining valuable practical experience alongside academic learning.
