ZERO WASTE EVENT: MILLION POUND PARTY The Million Pound Party is under a month away and as we put finishing touches on our preparations we thought it would be beneficial to share with you what it means to be a zero waste event. Zero waste is a shift away from the typical linear flow of materials towards “a more circular flow of materials – a cycle in which the value and useable life of raw materials are extended through reduction, reuse, recycling and composting” (Teton County Integrated Solid Waste & Recycling). The last resort is a landfill. Did you know that the three words “reduce, reuse, and recycle” are actually listed in order of importance for reducing waste? Zero waste events plan specifically with these three R’s in mind, and their hierarchy, with reducing waste being the primary objective. As much as HFR’s mission is to reduce food insecurity in Teton County, we are just as driven by the need to reduce food waste and divert food from landfills. We see landfill-bound food as more than just a loss of nutritious food, but also as a loss of resources (land, water, energy, fuel) that went into growing and distributing that food. This loss of resources applies to other non-food materials that are also not used to their fullest potential and skip the three R’s.

Thanks to our partners for making this possible; ISWR, WyoFarm Composting, Friends of Pathways, and JH20.

MILLION POUND PARTY SPONSOR HIGHLIGHT OSM has been sponsoring the Million Pound Party since 2018, with 2022 being their debut as our Platinum Sponsor! We couldn’t be more grateful for their support of our event. "Long before upcycling and repurposing were buzzwords, OSM founder Jonathan Foote, started the company focused on preserving and transforming the materials found in historic homesteads, barns and cabins of the west and a movement began. Repurposing, recycling and reclamation are the core of OSM's culture and HFR's mission resonates with that shared passion of reducing waste through innovation, sustainability and community involvement."

INTRODUCING OUR NEW STAFF MEMBER: ASH Ash is originally from Cape Town, South Africa. She spent some of her childhood years living in Nairobi, Kenya which fostered her love and appreciation for all living things and nature. Ash received a Bachelors degree of Science in Human Anatomy and Physiology at the University of Stellenbosch, followed by an Honors Degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics. After school, she practiced as a dietitian in a rural area of South Africa where food insecurity and malnutrition was rife. She learned about community-specific interventions, education for improved nutrition, and the barriers that people face in order to receive proper nutrition. Fast forward three years, she found herself in Jackson volunteering at Hole Food Rescue. Ash loves being outside, surrounded with the sounds and colors of nature; she is grateful to be in Jackson doing work that serves the community.
