A NO-COST GROCERY PROGRAM FEATURING RESCUED FOOD

UN PROGRAMA DE COMESTIBLES GRATIS CON COMIDA RESCATADA Hole Food Rescue’s Food for the Community Program (FFC) is a direct-to-community model that focuses on reducing barriers inherent to traditional food access such as time, location, language, and choice. Picture a farmer’s market with no financial transaction. These programs have grown to be staples in their respective communities, seeing ~900 individual visits monthly. On any given Wednesday at Blair Apartments, one can find participants eager to help set up before shopping for themselves. An important aspect of this program is the ability to diminish the stigma around food assistance by informing participants that the food they take home helps reduce food waste in Jackson. 2022 Objective: Implementing Participatory Framework, a simple idea that those accessing food are the most knowledgeable in what they need from a food program. Put into practice, this idea invites participants to take ownership by operating the FFC, building relationships within their community, participating in decision making, and more.

A HOLE FOOD RESCUE INITIATIVE THAT AIMS TO ERADICATE CHILDHOOD HUNGER IN TETON COUNTY HFR’s Sprout Program runs throughout the school year and summer, to provide free lunches and additional food to children possibly experiencing food insecurity. It encompasses three different solutions: Sprout Weekend Food Bags, Middle Market at JH Middle School, and Sprout Summer Lunches. Through these childfocused initiatives HFR hopes to relieve the financial burden on families when children are not in school. As a single mom, I am so grateful. My son looks forward to the Sprout Mobile and it really helps to take the pressure off me during summer while he’s out of school. - Sprout Mobile Participant

Lunches provided to children through the 2021 Sprout Summer Lunch Program In this 11 week program, free lunches are shared with any child who may need one through multiple distribution methods. Volunteers deliver lunches to day camps around Jackson, for children attending camp on scholarship. Sprout Stands are set up in neighborhoods in the evening, so working families can pick up a lunch for their child to have the next day. The Sprout Mobile visits multiple locations weekly to bring lunches directly to where kids live and play during the day.
Families enrolled in Sprout Weekend Food Bags (WFBs) Through our Weekend Food Bag program (formerly JH Friday Food Project), families are able to receive free groceries to ensure their children have enough healthy food to eat over the weekend. Bags consist of fresh fruits and veggies, healthy snacks, and shelf stable items. We have added options for delivery to offer families a choice and reduce barriers such as stigma and accessibility, often associated with food assistance. WFBs can be given discreetly to a child at school, delivered to their home, or picked up at the HFR Hub. This program has increased 167% since the start of the 2021 school year.
Visits each week to the Middle Market at JH Middle School This in-school food pantry is a collaboration between HFR and TCSD#1. It offers fruit, healthy snacks, and easy to make meals. The market is open to all JH Middle School students in an effort to educate and create comfortability around food assistance.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR It is with great honor that I write this letter to the Hole Food Rescue community, as I am thrilled to be the next Executive Director of this organization. My introduction to HFR came at a New Volunteer Orientation in 2016. Since then, I have fulfilled several roles including Director of Operations and Director of Programs. There have been many exciting twists and turns along the way. All of these have been opportunities for growth that have brought me to where I am today. I have seen a great deal of change over the last six years, not only in the organization, but also within our community. Our partnerships with food donors, local grocers, and restaurants have strengthened. More people are aware of our mission and contact us to reduce food waste in their homes. We have also expanded collaborations with other incredible nonprofits to best serve Jackson. As much as I’d like to focus on the positive aspects of our work, there is an underlying concern that the need for food is growing rapidly. As a community, we all need to recognize the struggle that so many families and individuals are experiencing. It is alarming to see
factors like the lack of affordable housing and rising food costs constantly threaten the people of Jackson. Creating a more accessible food system is something that Hole Food Rescue can and will continue to do to ensure everyone has access to nutritious food. I embraced the role of Executive Director because I am confident in our community. With further involvement we have the ability to make positive impacts that will ultimately sustain our small town and the people that live here. I now find myself in a new chapter of my career and the opportunity of a lifetime to make a lasting impact in our community.
