YEAR 16, VOLUME

A plate is designed. So is a room. Behind both is the same way of thinking: composition, color, texture, the way light falls across a surface and decides what you see first. The materials change and so does the lifespan — a room lasts for years, a plate for minutes — but the gesture is identical.

This August–September edition celebrates the people doing that work here. Our dining guide moves through the South Florida kitchens taking part in Miami Spice — back for its twenty-fifth edition, August 1 through September 30 — where every plate reaches the table as designed as a living room. And our design section brings together the interior designers and architects defining how the region lives today.

What both understand is that beauty is not an ornament added at the end. It is a decision made at the first sketch and the first ingredient. To design well is to make something look inevitable, as though there had been no other way to do it.

These pages are meant to be used: book the table, keep the reference, call the studio whose work stopped you. Good design and good food ask to be lived in, not admired from a distance. I hope you enjoy this edition devoted to design in its two most pleasurable forms: the kind you live in and the kind you taste.

MONACO YACHT SHOW 2026

The Return of Warmth, Color and Character

If the last decade belonged to pristine white and austere minimalism, 2026 officially marks the end of that era. Today's interiors are warmer, more expressive and deeply personal. Designers have stopped chasing magazine-perfect spaces in favor of homes that feel collected over time — full of history and soul.

Goodbye gray, hello earth tones

The year's defining story is a rich, enveloping earthy palette: chocolate brown holds its place as designers' favorite color, joined by deep greens, burgundy and spiced hues. At the same time, soft pastels — butter yellow, powder pink, pistachio — offer a fresh, optimistic counterpoint. Color drenching, the technique of wrapping walls, ceilings and trim in a single shade, continues to gain ground among those seeking rooms with real atmosphere.

Thoughtful maximalism

Maximalism strengthens its position as the dominant aesthetic, but in its most curated form: layered textures, patterns in conversation, and objects with a story — all edited with intention. Vintage pieces and antiques, particularly from the 1920s through the 1950s, are enjoying a renaissance, alongside family heirlooms that fill spaces with meaning.

Nature as the through line

Biophilic design now goes far beyond a few houseplants: reclaimed woods, natural stone, hand-troweled plaster, generous windows and earth-inspired palettes strengthen the connection between indoors and out. Sustainability is no longer an extra but a starting point, with recycled materials and bio-based fabrics among the go-to choices.

Organic forms and craftsmanship

Straight lines are giving way to curved, sculptural silhouettes: enveloping sofas, irregularly shaped woods and furniture that reads as art. Architectural millwork, classic moldings and finishes that develop a patina over time — unlacquered brass, bronze, copper — celebrate the return of craft and the well-made detail.

Outdoor living, South Florida style

Few places bring these trends to life like South Florida, where the climate invites outdoor living twelve months a year. Terraces and patios are now designed with the same rigor as any living room: full outdoor kitchens, lounge areas under pergolas, performance fabrics that sacrifice nothing in elegance, and layered lighting that stretches poolside evenings well past sunset. The boundary between indoors and out all but disappears — oversized sliding glass doors, continuous flooring and integrated tropical greenery turn the backyard into the home's natural extension, and the true heart of its social life.

The new luxury is living well

At heart, every 2026 trend points to the same idea: homes designed for rest, comfort and real life. Luxury is no longer measured in shine, but in warmth, authenticity and spaces that tell the story of the people who live in them.

Crafted from a single slab of solid walnut or oak, this dining table lets the wood's natural character lead the design — the live edge, grain, and mineral streaking are left exposed rather than smoothed away. Each slab is hand-selected and seasoned before it's shaped, so no two tables are alike.

Available with a clear or tinted epoxy resin inlay along the edge, or finished simply to let the wood stand on its own. Bases are custom-built in metal or wood to match the scale of the piece, and every table is sized to the room — Holzsch specializes in large-format tables, from standard dining lengths up to 20 feet for great rooms and executive spaces.

Built in South Florida with 25 years of woodworking experience behind it, each table comes with a lifetime warranty on structural integrity and joinery, and takes 8–16 weeks to complete from design to delivery.

Outdoor Living, South Florida Style:

The New Rules of Al Fresco Design

South Florida's outdoor spaces are having a real design moment right now — the patio is no longer an afterthought but treated with the same intention as any interior room. Performance fabrics have gotten a major upgrade: Sunbrella and olefin blends now come in the same rich, tactile textures — bouclés, linen weaves, chunky knits — driving the indoor “quiet luxury” look outdoors, so lounge furniture looks as elevated outside as it does in. Deep-seated modular sofas and oversized daybeds are replacing the old stiff patio set, built for lounging rather than just sitting. Furnishings in teak, woven rope, and powder-coated aluminum with rounded, organic silhouettes are trending over anything boxy or overtly “outdoor.” Natural stone and porcelain pavers that mimic travertine or limestone are extending interior flooring straight out to the pool deck, dissolving the line between the two spaces.

On the trends side, full outdoor kitchens have become close to standard in new builds and major renovations — think pizza ovens, built-in grills, and beverage centers rivaling indoor setups. Shade structures have evolved too: pergolas with retractable canopies or motorized louvered roofs let homeowners control sun and rain without sacrificing the open-air feel that defines South Florida living. Fire features — linear gas fire pits, fire-andwater combinations — are a near-must for evening entertaining, and layered lighting — string lights, uplighting on palms, lowvoltage path lights — is replacing single overhead fixtures to create real atmosphere after dark. Tropical, drought-resistant landscaping featuring clusters of travelers’ palms, bird of paradise, and sculptural agave is preferred in place of manicured lawns. This approach supports the resortlike, low-maintenance aesthetic that has become characteristic of the region.

At top design company that does outdoor well is Dedon, German brand, headquartered in Lüneburg, Germany, where its signature synthetic fiber is manufactured. The furniture itself, though, is hand-woven at Dedon's own facilities on Cebu Island in the Philippines, by master weavers who craft the intricate patterns the brand is known for.

GREENVIEW AT PRESIDENTIAL

GREENVIEW AT PRESIDENTIAL

A New Era of Estate Living in South Florida

Just north of Aventura, a quiet transformation is underway. Where a 104-acre golf course once stretched across the landscape, a new residential enclave is taking shape — one that promises to redefine luxury estate living in Miami-Dade.

Greenview at Presidential is a collaboration between Lennar and BH Group, founded by Isaac and Liat Toledano — the first new collection of luxury single-family residences in the area in more than 25 years. An intimate community of just 103 homes, it is a rarity by design.

The homes range from 3,500 to nearly 4,700 square feet, with open-concept interiors, natural light, premium finishes, and smart-home technology that serves the architecture rather than announces itself. Select Next Gen® floor plans offer genuine privacy for multigenerational living. Many residences include private pools, all opening onto generous landscaped grounds reimagined from the original golf course.

Residents enjoy a guard-gated entrance, elegant clubhouse, resort-style pool, fitness center, and easy access to Aventura Mall, the beach, and the Brightline station.

What sets Greenview apart is the coherence of the whole — architecture, landscape, and community considered together from the start. In a region where luxury has too often meant excess, here the distinction is intention.

PARKSIDE RESIDENCES

Where Wellness Meets Design in the Heart of Brickell

Brickell has long set the standard for urban luxury in Miami. What is shifting now is the definition of luxury — and Parkside Residences is one of the clearest expressions of where residential design is headed. Rising at 1741 SW Second Ave., the eight-story boutique condominium by BI Group USA — the North American division of Central Asia's largest real estate developer — was conceived around a single idea: that a home should support the life lived inside it. Architect Kobi Karp and interior studio 2ID Interiors translate that idea into 187 residences where thoughtful design and genuine wellness infrastructure share equal footing.

The architecture establishes the tone. Natural limestone, lush landscaping, and generous green space create a quiet permeability between indoors and out. Studio, one- and two-bedroom residences feature open-concept floor plans, expansive windows, oversized balconies, contemporary finishes, and arrive fully furnished.

The rooftop is a destination in its own right — resort-style pool, outdoor bar, BBQ kitchen, and sweeping views of the Miami skyline. Wellness extends throughout with a Technogym fitness center, cycling studio, yoga and mindfulness room, full spa circuit, and a Zen Garden offering stillness in the middle of the city. Co-working lounges, private conference rooms, and curated social spaces allow residents to work, gather, and entertain without stepping outside. Residences begin in the low $400,000s. Winmar Construction serves as general contractor; ONE Sotheby's International Realty exclusively represents sales. Completion anticipated in the second quarter of 2028.

Sally Peters

EVERY EXTRAORDINARY BRAND BEGINS WITH AN EXTRAORDINARY PERSON.”

What's the chapter of your life that few people know, the story that truly shaped the man you are today?

Most people know me through my career in banking or as the owner of an iconic food company. But neither title really defines me. Banking gave me an extraordinary foundation. It taught me discipline, leadership, and how to solve complex problems with great people. But building a brand changed my perspective. In many ways, it's like being a father. As the father of two children, what you invest shapes who they become. Building a brand is similar. It's part art, part science, and when those come together, something real takes shape, something people can see and share. That's where my definition of success has moved. Today, it's about creating something with lasting value, something that keeps making a difference long after I'm no longer at the center of it. Whether raising children or building a brand, the reward is knowing that what you poured into keeps growing and doing good.

“We've been careful not to automate the craftsmanship out of the product, while modernizing where it makes sense”

THE STEWARD OF A FLORIDA LEGACY

More than 100 years after Sally Peters handwrote her first recipes, Geary Stonesifer continues to lead Mrs. Peters with the same commitment to quality, family and tradition.

Looking back, what's the greatest lesson you've learned from stepping away from the corporate world and becoming the steward of one of Florida's most iconic food brands?

The biggest lesson is that running your own business is totally different from working in a corporation. In a corporation, you handle your piece. When it's your business, every decision lands on your shoulders, good or bad. And I've learned that success comes from doing the day-in, day-out stuff. Solving problems, taking care of your people, looking after customers- no shortcuts, just consistency.

You've led businesses in very different industries. Today, how do you define success, and what values do you hope every customer experiences when they enjoy a Mrs. Peters product? Obviously, everyone is in business to make a living, so we cannot be naive about that fact. However, enjoyment is part of success, not separate from it. For Mrs. Peters, I want customers to feel like they're getting honest quality, made with care and not cutting corners. If someone opens a tub and says, “this is the best fish dip I've ever had,” and they come back for more, that's the win, both emotional and sustainable.

Mrs. Peters has been part of Florida's history for more than a century. When you first learned the company's story, what convinced you this was a legacy worth preserving? When I worked for the investment bank Alex Brown, we took Krispy Kreme Donuts public, and I saw how powerful a beloved regional brand can be. So, when evaluating Mrs. Peters during acquisition diligence, I drew a parallel. Different products, of course, but the same loyalty, the same generational pride. That made me want to preserve and grow it, not change it.

Un Legado que vive en cada mesa

A LEGACY THAT LIVES AT EVERY TABLE

Your products are still crafted using traditional smoking methods and timehonored recipes. In an era of automation and mass production, why has it been so important to protect those traditions? The point isn't preserving tradition for its own sake. It's preserving the qualities that made the brand trusted. Caption p. 1 We still use the original handwritten recipes of Sally Peters, and we've developed some new ones to stay on trend with flavors. When we create new products, we follow the same philosophy: keep seafood front and center, hold it at 50% of every dip, and keep ingredients simple. We've been careful not to automate the craftsmanship out of the product, while modernizing where it makes sense.Caption p. 2 That's how we honor the tradition while carrying it forward responsibly.

More consumers today are paying close attention to the ingredients in the foods they buy. What sets Mrs. Peters apart when it comes to the quality of your ingredients, your smoking process, and your commitment to making products people can feel good about serving their families?

We use only wholesome, high-quality ingredients. Every dip has 50% seafood, and we keep recipes simple, seasoning just enough to enhance, not overwhelm. And we still use the traditional smoking methods that define the brand. The goal is for families to feel confident that they're serving something made with quality ingredients and an unwavering commitment to that standard.

Mrs. Peters is known for its smoked seafood, premium fish, meats, and signature dips. What's your personal favorite selection, and why? What makes that product special to you?

It's hard to choose, but my favorites are still the two original smoked fish dips created by Sally Peters, our Mahi and Wahoo dips. Those recipes have lasted more than a century because they embody what Mrs. Peters stands for: simple ingredients, premium seafood, letting the fish shine. Every time I enjoy one, I'm reminded that we're carrying forward a very special culinary legacy. I'm also proud of our Baltimore and New Orleans-style crab dips. I'm a native of Baltimore, and I grew up really loving great crab dishes. I felt there was room to create premium crab dips that stood apart while still sticking to Mrs. Peters' philosophy. Those products tell our story. The original Mahi and Wahoo dips represent our heritage, and the crab dips represent our future. Together, they tell the story of Mrs. Peters.

Ultimately, we'd like the next generation of customers to think of Mrs. Peters as the company that set the standard for premium smoked seafood in America, respected for quality, innovation, and never losing sight of its heritage.

For someone discovering Mrs. Peters for the first time, where can they find your products? Which grocery stores, specialty markets, restaurants, or locations would you recommend they visit?

Mrs. Peters products are available throughout Florida and the Southeast in Publix supermarkets. We also produce private label smoked seafood products for approximately 80 to 100 restaurants across Florida. In the Northeast, you'll find us in ShopRite stores across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware. In Texas, we're available at H-E-B and Central Market. And we're proud to partner with specialty retailers like Wynn's Market in Naples, Joseph's Classic Market, and Bedner's Farm Fresh Markets in Palm Beach County.

As you look ahead, what is your vision for Mrs. Peters over the next five to ten years, and what would you like the company to be known for by the next generation of customers?

Over the next five to ten years, our vision is not to be everything to everybody in seafood. We want to be recognized as the leading premium smoked seafood company in America, starting with the smoked fish dip category that built our reputation. At the same time, we're excited about expanding with our hot smoked fish fillets, seeing real opportunity in both retail and food service. But our philosophy won't change. We'll keep innovating while staying true to the values that have guided Mrs. Peters for more than a century.

Chef Lorenzo Di Gravio, Caleta

As the skyscraper-stacked skyline of Panama City comes into view for travelers crossing the famed Panama Canal, it becomes clear why the capital has long been the region's undisputed hub of commerce. The city's appeal to business travelers shows no sign of fading — but visitors are increasingly flocking here in search of something more: a truly memorable meal.

"Panama has one of the most vibrant culinary scenes in the region because, despite its small size, it has enormous cultural diversity."
Chef Lorenzo Di Gravio, Caleta

Di Gravio moved to Panama from his native Italy four years ago, leaving behind a Michelin-starred kitchen in Rome after falling in love with the food scene of this UNESCO-recognized City of Gastronomy.

“Throughout Panama's history, it has been influenced by different parts of the world, blending with local products and traditions to create a unique gastronomic identity, where techniques, ingredients, and flavors from different cultures come together in a single dish. It is a richness that many visitors do not expect to discover.”

Caleta takes diners on a culinary journey across Panama with a menu shaped first and foremost by the country's remarkable diversity of ingredients. Equally diverse are the influences found in standout dishes like gnocchi and clay-cooked lamb — a reflection of Di Gravio's Italian roots meeting a deep reverence for his adopted home in the Americas.

UMI

Panama's privileged position between the Pacific and the Caribbean makes it a natural setting for UMI — a seafood-forward Japanese-style izakaya celebrated for its handrolls and a curated menu of culturally diverse dishes and cocktails. A bar stretching the full length of the intimate space invites guests to connect directly with chef Kamel Abi Hassan and head bartender Mauricio Pardo as they work.

MAITO

Mario Castrellón is the undisputed father of fine dining in Panama, with his flagship restaurant Maito long considered the country's finest table. The newly reimagined space serves Panama's classic dishes with a masterful creative twist — from whole grilled fish finished in the chef's signature chombasia sauce to plates that pay eloquent homage to Panama's deep Asian culinary influences.

CANTINADELTIGRE

Casual, confident, and full of character, Cantina del Tigre packs bold, vibrant flavors into every dish and drink. Faithfulness to Panamanian roots runs through everything — comforting staples like tostones the size of dinner plates appear alongside chef Fulvio Miranda's classic rambutan ceviche, seafood-rich rice, and tamales that speak directly to the soul of the country's culinary tradition.

There's a color here that seems to belong to nowhere else — a stunning, specific shade of turquoise. It surfaces in the water off Playa Kalki, in the pastel facades along the Handelskade, in the bottles of Blue Curaçao lined up behind every bar on the island.

Curaçao doesn't do subtlety, and it doesn't apologize for that. This is an island that paints its 18th-century Dutch colonial mansions in lemon and coral and mint, then lets the trade winds bend its cactus sideways on the wilder side of town. It has a bar that's been pouring green rum since 1954 and feels no need to change a thing about it. It built a cathedral out of ninety-two million thorns, because apparently a beautiful garden wasn't going to cut it.

This is Curaçao, unfiltered — every color, every contrast, entirely itself.

Dónde Hospedarse

Where

to Stay

The island's hotel scene has quietly leveled up. Curaçao has seen a wave of new and newly renovated boutique properties in recent years, each with its own point of view, and the two below make a strong case for what's possible here, whether you want to be in the middle of everything or removed from it entirely.

In the city, the Renaissance Wind Creek Curaçao Resort sits in the heart of downtown Willemstad, and it has just emerged from an extensive renovation that transformed it into something genuinely worth staying in rather than merely sleeping at. The 237 rooms are fresh, clean-lined, and considered: sky blue accent walls, wood detailing, geometric light fixtures, and modern bathrooms. The new lobby and restaurant lean into a nautical sensibility — white interiors, rope-inspired details, touches of turquoise and sea foam green. Just steps away, at the edge of the historic Rif Fort, 5 O'Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill sits in the open-air section of the Renaissance Mall & Rif Fort, under a massive canopy of wooden beams and thatch, with lime-wheel neon lights overhead and surfboards marking the entrance.

Coral Estate Rentals & Resort

On the west coast, Coral Estate Rentals offers Curaçao at its most unhurried. The gated Coral Estate Resort, with its Cape Marie luxury apartments and condos, delivers panoramic Caribbean Sea views, elegant design, and that specific luxury of feeling both removed from the world and entirely comfortable in it. The apartments combine hotel-caliber service with the breathing room of a private home, a distinction that matters more on longer trips than most people expect. A shared pool, beach access, a spa, and restaurants round out a property that earns the word "estate" in ways that most places using it do not.

It's also, quietly, one of the best choices on the island for a family vacation: the space, the privacy, and the resort-style amenities give everyone room to spread out without sacrificing service. Evenings often start with a cocktail gathering at the pool, one of those unhurried, golden-hour moments that Caribbean evenings seem designed for. For something more elevated, Penthouse Casa Serenidad takes it a step further: guests can book Chef Brandon Colina of BC Private Chef for a custom dinner prepared right in the residence, blending Caribbean flavors with international cuisine for a first-class experience with the Caribbean Sea as the backdrop.

Right on the property, Karakter is a beach bar on a strip of sand that requires you to make peace with your own company.

Art Hotel Curaçao y Lemon Beach: Donde el Diseño se Convierte en Destino

Where Design

Becomes Destination

In the Pietermaai District — Curaçao's own SoHo — Art Hotel Curaçao is the first project internationally celebrated Studio Piet Boon has delivered on the island. The interiors, conceived with local architect Cas Aalbers, include 32 rooms, each with its own commissioned artwork curated by Zanolino Gallery, so no two stays feel the same. The atmosphere is adultsonly and unhurried, every corner a considered decision.

The hotel's restaurant, The Lemon Tree, arrived already trailing accolades from its Dutch origins — Best Newcomer at the Deventer Entrepreneurs Event, Holland's Best Delivery at Horecava — and offers an unlimited à la carte breakfast by the ocean and an intimate five-course chef's menu at dinner built around local Caribbean ingredients. Then there's Lemon Beach itself, the hotel's private oceanfront club, where a tranquil infinity pool meets the Caribbean Sea and Bali beds line the water's edge.

Una Ciudad Bañada en Colores

A City Bathed in Colors

UNESCO designated Willemstad as a heritage site, but no official recognition can match the experience of walking through Punda in golden afternoon light. The Queen Emma Floating Bridge, a pedestrian pontoon that swings open to let ships pass, is the kind of civic infrastructure that doubles as performance art. You cross it. You wait for it. Either way, you're part of the show. On the other side is Otrobanda, Willemstad's older, more bohemian half, where restored colonial buildings sit alongside striking street murals.

At its heart, Kura Hulanda Village unfolds as one of the neighborhood's most atmospheric corners, a labyrinthine complex you could wander through, exploring their quaint shops, visiting their art galleries, and enjoying fantastic dining at Caleo Crudos y Parrilla.

The Governor's Mansion anchors Wilhelmina Plaza with a stately gravity, while rows of Dutch Colonial facades in sherbet hues — lemon, coral, mint, sky blue — remind you that this is the Caribbean filtered through centuries of Dutch trading ambition. The result is a city unlike anywhere else on earth: part Amsterdam, part tropics, entirely its own thing.

Tucked into Punda, the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue and its adjoining Jewish Cultural Historical Museum add another layer entirely: consecrated in 1732, it's the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Americas, its sandcovered floor a quiet, centuries-old reminder of the community that built a new life here.

El Bar Más Antiguo del Caribe, y un Ron Verde

The Oldest Bar in the Caribbean, and a Green Rum

Any honest account of Willemstad must include Netto Bar. It's been here since 1954, and it's the home of Ròm Bèrdè — green rum — which sounds like a dare and drinks like a local secret, nothing trendy about it, and that's exactly the point. The best way to get around is by CurTuk Tuk, whose compact three-wheelers slip through streets no bus could navigate, and hopping from Netto Bar to BKLYN in a tuk tuk as Willemstad lights up for the evening is the kind of story you tell when you get home. BKLYN serves craft cocktails in a trendywithout-trying atmosphere: good music and a well-made drink, and here that's enough.

Catedral de Espinas

Art, History, and a Cathedral Made of Thorns

Landhuis Bloemhof doesn't announce itself loudly. A mansion dating to 1735, set on seventeen acres, it is today a cultural center dedicated to the artist May Henriquez: her sculpture studio frozen in time, the Ex Libris May-Max Library, the open-air sculpture studio of Hortence Brouwn, and a gift shop stocked with handcrafted jewelry and art books.

In the gardens, Herman van Bergen built a Labyrinth and Cathedral of Thorns from nearly 92 million acacia thorns, a symbol of creativity and humanity's connection to nature. As daylight fades, it glows from within as a stage for cultural performances beneath the Caribbean sky.

Breakfast with the Grandmothers

Serka Tanchi is a breakfast and lunch bistro in Willemstad that deserves its own paragraph just for the philosophy behind it. The name means "near the aunt," and the concept is rooted in the memory of the owners' grandmothers — women known for their hospitality, their kitchens, and their insistence that a good meal shared is a good meal doubled. Fresh, homemade dishes inspired by Curaçao's layered cultural heritage arrive to the soundtrack of jazz. It is, in the best way, like eating at someone's home, if that someone happened to be an excellent cook with a gift for warmth.

El Problema del Pez

León, Resuelto con Delicia

The Lionfish Problem, Solved Deliciously

Lionfish are invasive, beautiful, and destructive to Caribbean reefs. Lionfish Caribbean, at Kura Hulanda Village, has turned ecological crisis into culinary mission. They catch the fish, serve it for lunch, and craft jewelry from the fins. The result is an organization doing real conservation work while offering one of the more distinctive dining experiences on the island. The food is fresh, the cause is genuine, and the jewelry is genuinely beautiful. There is something deeply satisfying about eating a meal that is actively good for the ocean.

Almuerzo con Vista: Zest Mediterranean

Lunch With a View: Zest Mediterranean

Jan Thiel Beach is one of Curaçao's most beautiful stretches of coastline, and Zest Mediterranean has claimed one of the finest patches of it. The restaurant brings the culinary traditions of the Mediterranean — fresh pastas, pristine fish, well-prepared meats, and desserts that justify the walk — to a setting that combines an elegant indoor dining room with an outdoor terrace right at the water's edge. The chef draws inspiration from locally sourced ingredients, giving the menu a Caribbean undercurrent that keeps it from feeling transplanted. It's the kind of lunch that stretches effortlessly into the afternoon, and the kind of place you find yourself planning to return to before you've even finished the meal.

En el Mar, Donde

Curazao Convence Sin Palabras

On the Sea, Where Curaçao Convinces Without a Word

If there's a single thing Curaçao does better than anywhere else, it's what happens at sea: not just the color, but the access to it. Maxi Sailing Curaçao puts that in perspective aboard a spacious maxi yacht, its deck wide enough to stretch out while the coastline drifts by, and the snorkeling is in crystal-clear water above reefs that still, against all odds, teem with life.

Go West Diving offers another angle entirely: Playa Kalki, on the island's western tip, is considered one of the best shore dives in the Caribbean, with a wall that drops away into deep blue just steps from the beach. But if you want beach, there are plenty to choose from — the island has no shortage of them, and that alone deserves its own article!

Bándabou: La Mitad Más Salvaje y Silenciosa de la Isla

Bándabou: The Island's Wilder, Quieter Half

The western part of Curaçao — Bándabou in Papiamentu — is where the island exhales: arid landscape, cactus bent by the trade winds, dramatic coastline.

Kas di Pal'i Maishi, the "Cornstalk House," is a kunuku plantation house that doubles as a museum and workshop, where visitors learn to make coconut oil, aloe vera cream, or pan será, the traditional local bread.

Shete Boka National Park exposes more than ten kilometers of north coast to the force of the Atlantic, with bays where sea turtles still nest. The Boka Pistol blows spray with a sound like a cannon, and inside the Boka Tabla cave, the ocean roars in the dark.

Cena al Borde del Mar

Dinner at the Edge of the Sea

Baoase Luxury Resort's Culinary Beach Restaurant is the kind of place where the legs of the dinner tables stand in the shallow water of the Caribbean Sea. The culinary team works at the intersection of French technique, tropical produce, and Asian flavor, which sounds like it should be chaotic and is instead precise and transporting. The setting does half the work. The kitchen does the other half, impeccably.

RIVAS Nicholas

Chef Ejecutivo · El Atlacatl Restaurante

For more than three decades, El Atlacatl Restaurante has stood as a landmark of authentic Salvadoran cuisine in Miami — winning the hearts of generations with recipes that speak of tradition, family, and cultural pride. Today, that legacy rests in the hands of Executive Chef Nicholas Rivas, a new-generation standardbearer committed to honoring the soul of Salvadoran cooking while boldly carrying it into the future.

For Nicholas, the kitchen was never simply a career. It was a calling — one deeply rooted in the flavors, aromas, and family values that gave El Atlacatl its life. He grew up immersed in the rhythms of this place, learning early that every recipe is a piece of a story worth preserving.

Being a chef was never just a profession — it was a way of honoring where we come from."

That philosophy lives in every dish that leaves his kitchen, where tradition and innovation don't compete — they complete each other. Like any entrepreneur worth his salt, Nicholas is the first to acknowledge that the road has been shaped as much by challenge as by triumph. Every obstacle has made him a sharper chef and a stronger leader, pushing him to evolve without ever losing the authenticity that has made El Atlacatl an institution within South Florida's Salvadoran and Latin community.

Food

is love. It is culture, identity, and the most powerful way to bring families back to the same table."

More than nourishment, every plate he sends out is an invitation — to remember, to discover, to connect. Among all the flavors that shaped his childhood, the pupusa holds a place apart. Made from the family's original recipe, it is more than El Salvador's most iconic dish. For Nicholas, it is a symbol of inheritance, memory, and continuity — a gift he shares daily with the thousands of guests who walk through the restaurant's doors.

That balance between authenticity and evolution is precisely what sets El Atlacatl apart. Its recipes carry the flavors that have defined Salvadoran cuisine for generations, while its culinary vision speaks to a contemporary audience — drawing in those who grew up with these tastes and those discovering the richness of Central American gastronomy for the very first time.

With leadership, passion, and an unwavering respect for his roots, Nicholas Rivas reminds us that great cooking transcends ingredients and technique. It is a way of preserving history, strengthening community, and celebrating Latino identity — one plate at a time.

Lo que callan los hombres

WHAT MEN DON’T TELL

Mental Health Is a Men’s Issue Too

For generations, men have been taught to solve, to provide, to protect, and to keep moving forward. We were taught to be strong. We were rarely taught what to do with fear, sadness, shame, rejection, or loneliness.

When a man never learns to express what he feels, he learns instead to hide it. He hides it behind work, success, money, the gym, alcohol, sex, anger, or a schedule so full there is no room left to feel. From the outside, everything looks under control. Inside, there is a battle no one knows about.

That is what Lo Que Callan los Hombres — What Men Don’t Tell is about. Through this project I have spoken with entrepreneurs, fathers, professionals, artists, and men in recovery. Their stories are different, but they share one thing: most of us learned that vulnerability was weakness.

That silence has consequences. A man in an emotional crisis rarely says, “I need help.” He isolates himself. He gets angry. He works compulsively, drinks too much, or looks for ways to numb what he cannot name.

In the Latino community, there is another layer. Many of us grew up hearing: Men don’t cry. Toughen up. Don’t tell anyone your problems.

In an edition devoted to the legal world and Latino leadership, this conversation belongs. Attorneys, judges, entrepreneurs, and professionals carry enormous pressure and responsibility every day. Behind every title is a human being.

True leadership begins when we stop confusing strength with silence.

Lo Que Callan los Hombres opens a space to talk about mental health, addiction, relationships, masculinity, fatherhood, identity, recovery, spirituality, and purpose.

Maybe real strength was never about proving how much we can endure. Maybe it is recognizing that men also have the right to speak, to feel, to ask for help — and to heal.

Privacidad y el Futuro de los Negocios

“The

Cover Story”

The AI Guy:

Jaime Rivas on Automation, Privacy, and the Future of Business

Jaime Rivas is not your typical tech entrepreneur. As one of FIU's first MBA graduates in AI integration for business — a concentration so new that only two students enrolled when it launched — he has spent nearly four years at the intersection of artificial intelligence and real-world business operations. Now, the CEO & Founder of OTR Digital helps businesses streamline operations, solve bottlenecks, and save valuable time.

From Experimenter to Expert

Rivas's journey into AI began around the release of GPT 2.5, when most people were still treating the technology as a curiosity. He went deeper. After more than a year of development and testing, OTR Digital AI launched with a reliable product ready for clients. The results have been immediate and measurable. One client is saving 115 hours per week with a single automated system built around a single core bottleneck. Not 35 systems. One.

The Biggest Misconception

Ask Rivas about AI fear, and he immediately reframes it. "AI is going to create far more jobs than it replaces," he says — and his own company is proof. The AI consulting role barely existed a few years ago. Today, OTR Digital AI is opening technical positions to people who don't consider themselves tech-savvy, training them and specializing them by industry. The goal, he is clear, is not to replace people. It is to supercharge them.

What surprises most people is the economic paradox at the heart of AI adoption.

"Increasing the efficiency of something doesn't mean it gets used less — it actually gets used twice as much. The same goes for jobs. People think AI will take everything away, but they aren't seeing what it's creating."

He points to a broader historical pattern: every major technological shift displaced some roles while generating entirely new industries that didn't previously exist. AI, he argues, is no different — only faster.

What Every Business Gets Wrong

The most common mistake, according to Rivas, is trying to implement everything at once. AI adoption should be surgical, not sweeping.

"When companies try to implement AI into every aspect of their business all at once, it's overwhelming — not just for the people installing it, but for the employees using it."

He works with each client to map their existing processes, unify their tools — often replacing a chaotic stack of 17 platforms with a single integrated system — and identify the one or two places where automation will have the greatest impact.

"It's not about where you can put AI. It's about where you should."

For many businesses in hospitality and professional services, that starting point is an AI receptionist — a system that ensures no lead is ever lost after hours, while being fully compliant with Florida's disclosure laws requiring AI identification at the point of contact. "You're not replacing the person answering the phone," Rivas clarifies. "You're making sure that when they can't answer, the business doesn't lose the lead." The distinction matters — and so does the result.

Privacy, Regulation, and What's Coming

On privacy, Rivas is direct and unambiguous.

"If you're on a basic plan and uploading sensitive information, that data is being used to train the models. That is explicitly stated in the terms."

His firm hosts everything locally, keeping client data fully contained and compliant with all applicable privacy laws — a point of difference he considers non-negotiable.

"You should never let AI have access to sensitive information unless you know your data is protected."

On regulation, he sees it already happening — and believes it is overdue. The most powerful models are now being reviewed before public release. Safeguards are tightening across the industry.

"They're realizing how powerful the models are. Before, it was almost like searching for something online. Now the reasoning has gone to a completely different level."

The era of using AI as a crutch, he argues, is giving way to something more intentional, more powerful, and more accountable.

They Weren't in MediaSo They Built Klip Studio.

A lender, a builder, and a roofer turn their own visibility struggle into Fort Lauderdale's newest creative hub-podcasts, headshots, and everything in between.

In a market where visibility can make or break a business, three entrepreneurs decided to solve their own problem — then open the solution to everyone else.

Klip Studio was founded by Enrique Alvarez, a licensed mortgage lender and real estate agent; Juan del Sol of Blue Sky Builders, a full-service general contracting firm; and Nicolas Guevara of Kover Solutions, a roofing and cover-solutions company. None of them came from media. All three had spent years building their own brands the hard way, and they built Klip Studio to make that process easier for others.

Three Friends, One Vision

The studio began as a friendship before it became a business plan. Enrique met Nicolas through a local networking group nearly five years ago, and Juan through real estate circles — three men in three industries, each grinding to stay visible in a digital market.

Enrique spent years guiding clients through real estate and financing — and learned that trust is built long before a deal closes. Nicolas, a second-generation roofer, built his name on craftsmanship. Juan, a broker and general contractor, helps businesses build out spaces that work as hard as they do.

Their founding question was simple: if they were already creating content for their own businesses, why not build a proper space for it? That conversation became Klip Studio — not just a place to record, but a hub where business owners can create, connect, and grow their brands together.

A Studio Built for Every Business

The model is straightforward: book online at theklipstudio.com, walk in, and use the space independently — fully equipped, no crew required — or let the Klip Studio team manage everything from setup through final delivery.

The Founders' Edge

What distinguishes Klip Studio isn’t the equipment so much as the perspective behind it. Its founders built businesses in real estate, lending, construction, and roofing before they built a studio, and that experience shapes every service — designed to help clients show up professionally and consistently, without the overhead of a full production team.

Whether a brand is scaling up or just starting to take content seriously, Klip Studio positions itself as a creative home base.

Entrada general gratuita.

A Story Finally Coming to Light

At the heart of Coral Gables, the Lowe Art Museum presents one of the most important exhibitions in recent memory for anyone seeking to understand Cuban art from a new and long-overdue perspective.

Under the titles El Pasado Mío / My Own Past: Afrodescendant Contributions to Cuban Art and Afrocubanismo: Highlights from the Ramón and Nercys Cernuda Collection, the museum brings together more than 100 works created between 1822 and 2022 — two centuries of Afro-descendant artistic creation and a profound exploration of Cuba's African roots and cultural identity.

The main exhibition, originally organized by Harvard University's Afro-Latin American Research Institute and expanded specifically for Miami, reclaims the place of Afro-descendant artists who were long omitted, minimized, or excluded from the official canon of Cuban art. Curated by historian Alejandro de la Fuente, this show does not simply revisit the past — it corrects it.

Among its most compelling moments are rarely seen early works by Wifredo Lam from 1926, 1931, and 1937, alongside major figures like Manuel Mendive, María Magdalena Campos-Pons, and Agustín Cárdenas, in dialogue with artists whose work has remained on the margins of art history until now. Together, they propose something powerful — a new genealogy of Cuban art.

This

exhibition does not simply revisit the past — it corrects it.

The companion exhibition, Afrocubanismo, examines the cultural movement of the 1930s and 40s, when many Cuban artists began incorporating Afro-Caribbean elements and African symbolism into their work. It raises uncomfortable but necessary questions about cultural appropriation, representation, and national identity. Was it admiration? Exoticization? A genuine attempt to redefine Cuba through its African roots? Likely something of all three.

Together, both exhibitions form a sophisticated, emotionally resonant conversation — one that reclaims silenced voices while examining how Afro-Cuban culture was interpreted, and sometimes romanticized, by the Cuban avant-garde.

Miami — a city shaped by exile, memory, Caribbean heritage, and layered Latino identities — is the perfect stage for this historic show.

On view through September 12 at the Lowe Art Museum, University of Miami campus. General admission is free.
