Día de Acción de Gracias con sabor Latino Una de las celebraciones más esperadas del año por los estadounidenses durante siglos es sin duda la fiesta de Thanksgiving o Día de Acción de Gracias. Este año serán aproximadamente 127 millones de hogares en Estados Unidos los que celebrarán la tradicional fiesta, fiesta a la que buena parte de los 52 millones de hispanos residentes se han sumado. Llegados de diversos países de Latinoamérica los hispanos en Estados Unidos han adoptado esta celebración de origen anglosajón como una celebración propia a la que le han inyectado sus tradiciones de acuerdo al país de procedencia poniéndole cada uno su toque y sabor personal. Uno de los aspectos más importantes de esta festividad es sin duda la dedicación que le pone cada familia a los platillos que se servirán ese gran día. El pavo plato típico por excelencia del Día de Acción de Gracias en la mesa de los his-
panos adquiere otros colores y sabores. Esta gran ave se pinta con los coloridos matices de los chiles mexicanos, y hasta cambia de nombre en la mesa de los puertorriqueños. Los boricuas amantes del lechón asado han inventado el ”pavochón” la fórmula culinaria perfecta para que el pavo tenga sabor a lechón. En el día de Acción de Gracias en muchos hogares hispanos en Estados Unidos los hornos se encenderán desde muy temprano y la faena para preparar la cena empezará incluso varios días antes del día de la celebración. Los mexicanos tampoco dejan solo al pavo, en algunos casos lo cubren con bastante mole, lo acompañan con tamales, arroz, ensalada de nopales y por supuesto las tortillas que nunca pueden faltar. Una buena copa de tequila para brindar por la ocasión y aguas frescas para los niños y en las zonas de frió brindarán con un ponche bien caliente. Los cubanos, por su parte agregan o susti-
tuyen el pavo por el puerco y por supuesto, acompañado de los frijoles. Los diferentes grupos de hispanos en Estados Unidos se preparan para la fiesta, sobre todo los que llevan muchos años y han echado raíces en el país, las mesas hispanas estarán llenas de sabor y tradición: pupusas, arepas, empanadas, ajíes, hallecas, pan de jamón nos muestran cómo los hispanos han hecho modificaciones a una fiesta tan americana para ajustarla a sus características culturales, sin perder la esencia autóctona del festejo: dar gracias. Los latinos en su mayoría aprovechan la fecha para reconocer -al igual que hicieron los peregrinos en 1621 que agradecieron la ayuda que recibieron de los indígenas nativos del lugar- así los hispanos reconocen que con su trabajo y tesón, han logrado alcanzar bienestar en este país.

Celebrando a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en los Quad Cities Por Anastassia Zvoryguina El 12 de diciembre es una celebración muy importante para muchos católicos devotos de origen mexicano. Es un día para celebrar a la amada Virgen de Guadalupe. Cada año la Iglesia de Santa María en Moline tiene un gran festejo en el que cada miembro de la comunidad es invitado a participar y compartir juntos su amor y devoción por ella. Este año la celebración durará tres días. “Esta es la primera vez que la celebración durará tres días”, dijeron los organizadores de este evento especial de celebración. La celebración de la Virgen de Guadalupe comenzará el martes 10 de diciembre de 2019 con una misa a las 8:30 AM. Después de la misa que inicia a las 9:30 AM hasta las 8:00 PM el público puede entrar para hacer adoración y a las 6 de la tarde se proyectará una película especial sobre La Virgen de Guadalupe en el gimnasio de la iglesia de Santa María. El segundo día de la celebración de los tres días también comenzará con una misa a las 8:30 AM. Al igual que el primer día a las 9:30 AM, el público es bienvenido a venir para la adoración. Esta vez la adoración durará todo el día y toda la noche, para que más miembros de la comunidad puedan pasar tiempo con la Virgen de Guadalupe. A las 5:00 PM habrá algunos bailes especiales. Quien sienta la necesidad de confesarse tendrá la oportunidad de hacerlo a partir de las 20:30 horas. Al mismo tiempo se rezará un rosario. El 12 de diciembre las tradicionales mañanitas comenzarán a las 4:00 AM seguidas de más cantos y adoración. Otro rezo del rosario será a las 5:30 AM y más danzas. El desayuno se servirá a las 6:30 AM. “El evento se ha transformado en una celebración de tres días porque queremos tratar de rezar 46 rosarios durante estos días”, comentaron los organizadores. Además, en la noche del 12 de diciembre habrá dos procesiones que comenzarán a las 4:30 PM. Una en la comunidad de St. Mary’s en East Moline y otra en la comunidad de St. Mary’s en Moline. El punto de partida de una de las procesiones es el estacionamiento de la tienda La Monarca ubicada en la 755 15th Ave en East Moline. Ellos irán a la iglesia de Santa María en Moline. Priscila Angel es una conocida cantante de música regional mexicana que tocaba el acordeón y cantaba en un grupo llamado Priscila y sus Balas de Plata a mediados de los años 90. Después de 16 años de éxito, las Balas de Plata se desintegraron y Priscila Angel decidió dedicar su vida a Dios. Comenzó su carrera como cantante de música cristiana. Su primer CD se llamó “Alabando a Jesús y María”. Disney on Ice en Moline “tendrá una sorpresa especial en la parte de Coco del programa” Por Anastassia Zvoryguina Una de las cosas que todos aprenden de las películas o dibujos animados de Disney es a no dejar jamás de soñar y a hacerlo siempre en grande. Marque su calendario porque sus sueños están a punto de hacerse realidad. La magia de Disney on Ice está de vuelta en los Quad Cities con su nueva producción llamada Dream Big. Este año habrá siete presentaciones del 5 al 8 de diciembre en el TaxSlayer Center en Moline. Dream Big contará con Mickey y Minne y las princesas favoritas de todos. Además, estarán Anna, Elsa y Olaf y como novedad este año habrá actuaciones de Moana y del aspirante a músico favorito de todos, Miguel, de la película Coco. “Disney on Ice trae diferentes historias clásicas[para vivirse]”, explicó Rubén Barrera, patinador de Disney on Ice.
Barrera ha estado de gira con Disney on Ice durante 3 años. Originario de Madrid, España, comenzó a patinar a los siete años. De hecho, Barrera dijo que quiso aprender a patinar después de ver uno de los shows de Disney on Ice. Explicó que quedó fascinado con la magia de Disney y le pidió a su madre que le comprara unos patines. Tomó clases de patinaje y participó en muchas competencias nacionales. Incluso obtuvo el segundo puesto en el Campeonato Nacional de Patinaje de España. “El patinaje es parte de mi vida”, dijo Rubén Barrera. Cuando Disney on Ice tuvo audiciones, fue y pasó la audición para ser uno de los patinadores de la compañía. “Desde entonces, he estado transmitiendo la magia de Disney on Ice”, dijo Barrera. Disney on Ice in Moline “will have a special surprise during the Coco portion of the show”

By Anastassia Zvoryguina One of the things everyone learns from any Disney movie or cartoon is to never stop dreaming and always dream big. Mark your calendar because your dreams are about to come true. The magic of Disney on Ice is back in the Quad Cities with its new production called Dream Big. This year there will be seven shows on December 5-8 at the TaxSlayer Center in Moline. Dream Big will have Mickey and Minne and everyone’s favorite princesses. In addition, there will be Anna, Elsa and Olaf and new this year there are performances by Moana and everyone’s favorite aspiring musician Miguel from the movie Coco. “Disney on Ice brings many different classic stories [to live],” Ruben Barrera one of the skaters with Disney on Ice explained. Mr. Barrera has been touring with Disney on Ice for 3 years now. Originally from Madrid, Spain, he started to skate at seven years old. In fact, Mr. Barrera said that he wanted to learn to skate after he saw one of the Disney on Ice shows. He explained that he was enchanted with the magic of Disney and he asked his mother to buy him skates. He took skating lessons and was competing in many national competitions. He even won second place in the National Skating Championships in Spain. “Skating is part of my life,” Ruben Barrera stated. When Disney on Ice had auditions, he went and passed the audition becoming one of the skaters with the company. “[Since then] I have been transmitting the magic of Disney on Ice,” Mr. Barrera said. Barrera loves Disney characters
and the magic they bring to kids. “The show might last only 2 hours, but the memories it leaves last a lifetime,” Ruben Barrera assured. He explained that Disney on Ice Dream Big will be a lot of fun representing many different Disney movies and the special effects of the show will leave audiences in awe. Of course, no Disney show can be without the most iconic Disney princesses, but also this year expect Miguel and dancing skeletons on ice, from Coco, and Aladdin with Abu doing mischievous tricks. “There will be Maleficent and Ursula, Mickey and Minnie, Moana and Miguel. There will be something for everyone. There will also be a special surprise during the Coco portion of the performance, but I will not tell you what it is,” Ruben Barrera shared with a laugh, adding that one has to go to see the show to know what the surprise will be. “Don’t miss the opportunity to see Disney on Ice Dream Big,” Ruben Barrera invites everyone in the Quad Cities to go to the show. “I hope everyone will come and enjoy this great dream.” Disney on Ice Dream Big will be at the TaxSlayer Center located at 1201 River Dr., Moline, IL from December 5-8. Thanksgiving Day with Latin Flavor Without a doubt, over the centuries Thanksgiving for Americans has been one of the most anticipated celebrations of the year. This year around 127 million homes in the United States will be celebrating this traditional holiday this number includes more than 52 million Hispanics. Coming from many different countries of Latin America, Hispanics in the United States have adopted this celebration, original to Anglo Saxon groups, as their own celebration and infused it with their own traditions according to their country of origin putting a touch of their own flavor to it. One of the most important aspects of this celebration is, without a doubt, is the dedication that each family puts to
the feast that will be served on that day. Turkey is a typical dish for Thanksgiving Day, but on the tables of Hispanic families, it gains different tastes and colors. This big turkey can be painted with colors of Mexican hot peppers and in the homes of Puerto Ricans, it even changes its name. The Puerto Ricans who love their lechon asado (roasted pork dish) invented something they call “pavochon”, a perfect recipe for the turkey that gives it the flavor of lechon. During Thanksgiving many Hispanic homes in the United States turn on their ovens very early and the labor of making the dinner starts, sometimes preparations begin days before the holiday. Mexicans also don’t just make plain
turkey, sometimes they cover it with mole sauce, serve it with tamales, rice, nopales salad and of course the never absent tortillas. A good shot of tequila to celebrate the occasion and fresh fruit drinks for the children and those living in colder climates will make a nice hot ponche (Mexican drink made with fruits, sugar cane and cinnamon sticks). Cubans usually substitute turkey with pork and of course it will be served with their traditional beans. Different groups of Hispanics in the United States prepare for this holiday, especially those that have been here for many years and have put their roots down in this country. The tables in Hispanic homes will be full of flavor and
traditions: pupusas, arepas, empanadas, ajies, hallecas, pan de jamon show us how Hispanics modify a holiday that is so traditionally American and adjust it to their own cultural characteristics without losing the essence of this whole celebration which is to give thanks. Most of the Latinos use this date to recognize – same as the pilgrims did in 1621 by thanking the help they received from native Indians of this country – the same goes for Hispanics who recognize that through their work and tenacity they also have reached their own wellbeing in this country.

Estoy contenta de que un gran número de familias hayan podido obtener ayuda a través de este taller y dar los siguientes pasos para volverse ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos”. Para ser candidato a la ciudadanía, usted debe ser residente permanente legal de los Estados Unidos durante al menos 5 años, o
si está casado con un ciudadano estadounidense, durante 3 años. Se recomendó a los solicitantes que llevaran consigo los documentos necesarios al taller. Casi dos docenas de estudiantes traductores de la Universidad Wesleyan de Iowa, así como personal de apoyo de las organizaciones asociadas, proporcionaron experiencia práctica a los asistentes que buscaban asesoramiento y apoyo para completar sus solicitudes y trámites de ciudadanía. “Espero volver a ser la anfitrión de este evento en un futuro y aprovechar el éxito

McCombie’s Citizenship Seminar Assists Permanent Residents with Citizenship Process Representative Tony McCombie (IL71st), along with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights, Esperanza Legal Assistance Center, and the YWCA of Sauk Valley hosted a workshop to help Permanent Residents with the Citizenship application process on October 26 in Sterling. “Navigating the citizenship process can be difficult. I was so impressed by the professionalism and help provided by our partner organizations in helping people understand the steps and work with those that want to come to our area for a better life for themselves, their families and generations to come,” Rep. McCombie said. “Our country is a nation of immigrants. I am glad a number of families were able to get assistance through this workshop and take the next steps toward becoming U.S. Citizens.” To be eligible for citizenship you must be a Lawful Permanent Resident of the
United States for at least 5 years, or if married to a U.S. citizen, for 3 years. Applicants were advised to bring the required documents with them to the workshop. Nearly two dozen student translators from Iowa Wesleyan University as well as support staff from the partner organizations provided handson expertise to attendees looking for advice and support in completing their citizenship applications and paperwork. “I hope to host this event again in the future and build on the success we had with this first event. With over 3,500 Lawful Permanent Residents in the 71st District, the need is great to assist families with navigating this sometimesdaunting process,” McCombie continued. December 12 is a very important celebration for many devout Catholics of Mexican origin. This is a day to celebrate the beloved Virgen de Guadalupe (Virgin Mary). Every year St. Mary’s Church in Moline has a big celebration where every member of the community is invited to come and share their love and devotion for her together. This year the celebration will last three days. “This is the first time that the celebration will last three days,” organizers of this special celebration event stated. The celebration of La Virgen de Guadalupe will start on Tuesday December 10, 2019 with a mass at 8:30 AM. After mass beginning from 9:30 AM until 8:00 PM the public can come inside for adoration and at 6 in the evening there will be special movie about La Virgen de Guadalupe in the gym of St. Mary’s church. The second day of the three-day long celebration will also start with a mass at 8:30 AM. The same as the first day at 9:30 AM the public is welcomed to come in for adoration. This time the adoration will last all day and all night, so the more members of the community can spend time with La Virgen de Guadalupe. At 5:00 PM there will be some special dances. Anyone who feels the need to confess will get a chance to do so starting from 8:30 PM. At the same time there will be a rosary prayer. On December 12 the traditional mañanitas singing will start at 4:00 AM followed by more songs and worship. Another rosary prayer will be at 5:30 AM and more dances. The breakfast will be served at 6:30 AM. “The event has been made into a three-day long celebration because we want to try to pray 46 rosaries during these days,” the organizers shared. Also, in the evening of December 12 there will be two processions that will start at 4:30 PM. One with the community of St. Mary’s in East Moline and another with the community of St. Mary’s in Moline. The starting point of one of the processions is the parking lot of La Monarca store located at 755 15th Ave in East Moline. They will go to St. Mary’s church in Moline. Another procession will start form St. Mary’s
church, 412 10th St. in Moline, and they will go the very last street of Moline coming close to the Old Mexico restaurant and then they will go back to the church. The two processions will meet in church and there will be a mass and special gathering in the gym after. Everyone is invited to attend. This celebration does not end on the 12th of December this year. On Sunday the 15th, there will be special Hora Santa (Holy Hour) presented by Father Antonio Dittmer and Priscila Angel. Priscila Angel is a well known singer of regional Mexican genre of music who used to play accordion and sing in a group called Priscila y sus Balas de Plata in the mid 90s. After 16 years of success, las Balas de Plata disintegrated and Priscila Angel decided to dedicate her life to God. She started her career as a singer of Christian music. Her first CD was called “Alabando a Jesus y Maria” (Worshiping Jesus and Mary). Anyone interested to attend this special Hora Santa with Priscila Angel in St. Mary’s Church in Moline on December 15 can purchase tickets now. There is a limited number of tickets available. The celebration of La Virgen de Guadalupe has always been part of community events in the Quad Cities, but this year it expanded to a three-day long celebration full of special events and even a presentation by a well known Mexican Christian singer. Don’t miss this year’s day of La Virgen de Guadalupe. If you cannot get a ticket to “Hora Santa” of December 15 in St. Mary’s Church you can see Priscila Angel on Saturday December 14 at a big Catholic Concert from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM at St. Patrick’s Parish in Iowa City. This concert is presented by the Multicultural Ministry of the Diocese of Davenport. The asking donation is $20.
