Note: ‘Normals’ data are for Farmingdale Republic Airport (KFRG). Summary: December 2016 was a changeable month across the Tri-State Region, including at the WeaterSTEM stations on the campus of Hofstra University. Despite three brief cold snaps, snowfall was negligible, and overall monthly temperatures were slightly above normal. Temperature: The average temperature for the month was 38.6° F, 2.5° above the normal of 36.1°. The maximum observed temperature was 60.8° on the 27th, and the minimum temperature was 17.6° on the 16th. Precipitation: 1.90” of precipitation fell during the month, well below the normal monthly average of 3.50”. The maximum daily precipitation was 0.64” on the 12th. Other Data: The highest wind gust recorded by the station was 40 miles per hour on the 15th. The lowest wind chill of 1° was also recorded on that date. The first freeze of the season occurred on December 9th when the minimum temperature reached 32°. Typically, the first freeze of the season in Central Nassau County occurs during mid-to-late November.
