b. Welcome, Senate Guest Vice President of Student Enrollment, Engagement, and Success, Jessica Eads

i. Jessica Eads: Jess Maggio is joining us as Chief of Staff to VP of Finance Tim Doyle. She is a Hofstra alum. This slide shows us what Bits n Bytes is right now, which needs some help. One of my biggest issues is the entrance way with the steps. We want to fix that. This place hasn’t been touched in a while, and we thought we had success in the main dining room so we want to try it here. We are thinking of this as a way to bridge our coastal communities with our urban communities - a daily hub for us. We want to bring in greenery but we are limited in that. The slides show our inspiration - some from on campus and some from other places. Some pictures are from the Guthart Science and Innovation building. All of the sharp edges in Bits - we want to make roundness to stop people from getting hurt. We also want little booths, recreating behind the student center dining room. This is for you all to give us guidance. The next slide is a layout of the floor plan. We are proposing some quiet space for quiet dining, the main servery, a market (similar to the one in the main dining room; the only place that will have a cashier), a sun porch with interesting

seating, high tables and low tables. If you go down the stairs there will be the veterans’ lounge, and upstairs is the commuters lounge. You can either go to student financial services or bits once you enter. The entire floor will be in a mostly grey colour. There will be a yellow strip to break that up. There is going to be some wood in the two quiet areas, and a little area rug and sofas in the commuter area. We have sleeping pods, and quiet zoom rooms. We are trying to figure out how many zoom rooms we need. We have an accessible room and 4 smaller ones. Would you rather have the sleeping pods in one cluster or spaced out?

ii. Senator Araba: I rather people be clustered together.

iii. Senator Pierre: I rather the pods be spaced out.

iv. Chief of Staff Maggio: Keep in mind that the cover is going to cover your head and you can’t see or hear anything.

v. Jessica Eads: I think it might be strange if you are cocooned and someone is chatting up next to you. We are trying to make it so that students don’t sleep in their car and they sleep here instead. It will be a place for a quick nap. Would you guys use one of these?

vi. VP Young: I have used one before. They were sound-proof and they were all clustered in one space.

1. Jessica Eads: When you think of the 9th, 10th and 4th floor, do we want Bits to be that? No, right. I am envisioning that this should be servery dining food. For the commuters lounge, they would want to do their homework, but I don't want it to become the library. All the collaborative tables are moveable. There will be no tables connected to chairs. We have a lot of single booths (banquets?), with ottomans and side tables. The tables will also have hooks for you to hang your bags etc. We are trying to incorporate smart design into the work. We will also have zoom booths that also include groups. Would you guys like more individual or group rooms?

vii. Jacob: More individual for zoom rooms. It does not look very appealing right now.

1. Jess Eads: It will be well lit, with frosting on the walls so we can’t see your screen from outside. There will be a table and seat.

viii. Senator Pierre: Are ADA and group rooms the same?

1. Jess Eads: ADA and group rooms are the same. We can do 2 large rooms and 4 single rooms. We are questioning that for the quiet section, should we move into the quiet rooms and keep the zoom rooms and sleeping pods nearby?

ix. Chair Dzaveluri: We should start with the sleeping pods and then zoom rooms. It would be awkward to walk past the zoom sections.

1. Jessica Eads: I think that was what Jess and I originally thought. There were two larger zoom rooms in this section, so we can move that so all the stuff is in like space.

x. Senator Urban: I was going to suggest starting with the zoom rooms and then the tables and then the sleeping pods as the zoom rooms can act as a boundary. We should not have to disturb people in sleeping pods.

1. Jessica Eads: I like the idea of you know to be quiet cause you notice the structure.

xi. Senator Vira: Are the commuter offices going to be moved to Memorial Hall?

1. Jessica Eads: Yes, the offices will be moved like Anita’s office. Someone from my team will be at the reception area. The next slide shows some wall designs/art that we are thinking of doing. We are going to bring the brick inside as well; a moss wall, and a cool ceiling feature for the commuter lounge. We also have a 3-D design of the space. We are deciding between a hanging light or lighting that is just on the ceiling.

xii. Secretary Danek: I think the hanging light is a nicer look for the area. It brings more ambience and gives it a more home type of vibe.

xiii. Chair Chauhan: the second option is a little more off-putting.

xiv. VP Young: I like the second option more.

xv. Senator Ehrlich: Too modern. I like the lights in Bits right now. I prefer the hanging ones.

xvi. Jessica Eads: The next slide shows our moss wall with the Hofstra logowhich will all be lit. The moss is a way to bring green into the space.

xvii. Senator Chacon: How wide is the distance between your head and the moss wall?

1. That’s a good point that we will ask about.

xviii. Senator Pierre: On the moss wall, how to prevent students from touching it? I fear it will get messy/fall apart.

1. Jessica Eads: I didn’t think students would touch it, but we will ask about this and we certainly don’t want it to get thinner.

xix. Senator Bruso: I love this area but there are not many outlets there.

1. Jessica Eads: We are working on this.

xx. Chair Peri: The hallway area seems very narrow especially since people move their chairs.

1. Jessica Eads: This is the area right now that has the booths. I think the fact that it is a counter opens more spaces.

xxi. Jessica Eads: The next slide is the glass enclosure area. The fans and lights are in antique bronze. We will have booths by the window, and there will

be round tables and chairs. We are increasing the seating in this area, and some more lighting.

xxii. Chair Chauhan: There is a lack of individual seating. I always see people at bits using individual seats sitting together.

1. Jessica Eads: We have a lot of individual seating as well, like some counters. There are about 417 seats, and right now there are about 375. The faculty area is removed so we are really utilizing the space.

xxiii. Senator Ehrlich: With the lighting, how is it going to look? Sometimes they are on, sometimes they are off in bits.

1. Jessica Eads: It is supposed to be lighter. We took off the lighting on the fans. The furniture is dark, so it looks darker. When we replace the colours, it is going to brighten up the space. The goal is to make the space lighter and a place designed for you.

xxiv. Chair Ahmad: Is there going to be microwaves in bits? Will there be a fridge for the commuter lounge area? Will there be kiosks, or will boost be used?

1. Jessica Eads: Yes, there are going to be microwaves, toasters and refrigerator., We are hoping to take the lockers and move them to the lower floor. There will be kiosks.

xxv. Senator Bruso: I remember the old 10th floor and it was really cold. Is that a part of the project?

1. Jessica Eads: Insulation - I have to look into this.

xxvi. VP Young: I don’t like gap near the ground area as the steps look awkward? Is there anything that can be done about that?

1. Jessica Eads: On one side there’s ADA. We are fixing the stairs on the other side. There are going to be vending machines, some furniture, potentially kiosks. We could make this a lounge.

xxvii. Chair Chauhan: Are there any plans to change the dining options?

1. Jessica Eads: Yup, you will see the menu soon.

xxviii. Senator Pierre: I like the high tables for taller people.

xxix. Senator Kurtz: I am not very tall, but at the high top tables I feel like I can focus better.

1. Jessica Eads: We will keep the mix of high and low tables.

xxx. Jessica Eads: We are keeping the exposed brick. The archway will be vinyl which is easy to clean and won’t chip. There are also hanging lights for the high top tables.

xxxi. Senator Ehrlich: The artwork currently in Bits aren’t really noticeable. Are these going to be thrown out or moved?

1. Jessica Eads: We are talking about creating a thrift store at the end of each year, especially for students that dorm so they can give up things or purchase new ones. That’s something we can do.

xxxii. VP Young: They have a unique touch of student life in Bits. So, it would be interesting to see how you can bring student life to the space.

1. Jessica Eads: Maybe we can collaborate with SGA for this.

xxxiii. Chair Ahmad: The bits bathrooms are gross. Are there any plans for reservations?

1. Jessica Eads: The bathrooms are bad. We have to put this on the list.

xxxiv. Secretary Danek: For the zoom rooms, is there going to be a system where you have to reserve in advance or can you just walk in?

1. Jessica Eads: It will be reserved so other students can't use it.

xxxv. Senator Bruso: The plan looks corporate right now, and I wish it could be more student-friendly.

1. Jessica Eads: Yes, so you want more warmth and something more student organization friendly.

xxxvi. Senator Pierre: Are students going to be able to table for organizations in this space?

1. Jessica Eads: That is not something that we intended this space for but I am liking this thought. I have been thinking about a screen that is interactive, so that can be an opportunity.

xxxvii. Chair Chauhan: I personally do not like the idea of having screens as there are a lot already. About the reservations, you have trouble booking because they fill up so far in advance and sometimes people do not show up to their reservation? There could be a system where you show an ID or get a key.

1. Jessica Eads: I am hearing that people are reserving spaces and not showing up, so we can avoid this by doing the phone credentials.

xxxviii. Chair Iacobovici: If you would leave space on the wall for student murals of hofstra, that would allow for student artwork to be displayed and give that feel.

1. Jessica Eads: Yes, I love that idea.

xxxix. Senator Smook: There are jukebox areas in HOFUSA and the Stu. Will that be expanded to Bits?

1. Jessica Eads: Yes, we will put one in there.

xl. Senator Vira: Will the classrooms also be redone at the lower level of Memorial?

1. Jessica Eads: No, not yet. But I can add the bathrooms to the list. Some of the classrooms were just redone.

xli. Chair Dzaveluri: Regarding reservations, not having them is bad. If I cannot make them, I will feel like someone is always there. It could also be hard to manage the time. For student life, it would be a good idea to have student art.

1. Jessica Eads: If we had it so you can swipe and there was a timer when your time is up, that is all we would have to manage minus the reserved space. There is much wasted space when people reserve and don’t show up. We will get the art department involved.

xlii. Senator Chacon: The repainting of the classroom on the basement floor was really rough and the door was locked a lot.

1. Jessica Eads: We could figure that out.

xliii. Jessica Eads: The new dining options will be Vedge Craft (Salads and Acai Bowls), Pasta & Co, The Market (Grab and Go, Sandwiches, Beverages, will not be on boost), Yella’s (burgers, milkshakes, heroes, etc.), the ramen will move to the Stu.

xliv. Senator Chacon: Does the bits market have hot food?

1. Jess Eads: It is not fill your plate. But it will have soups and other hot food.

xlv. Chair Ahmad: Is the only pizza option now Brooklyn Slice?

1. Jessica Eads: There are pizza options at HOFUSA/Dutch Treats. It is one of the lowest-sold products in Bits.

xlvi. Senator Pierre: You kept saying everything would be on boost. Will there be kiosks too?

1. Jessica Eads: There will be kiosks and everything is on boost. My hope is one day the kiosks will be obsolete. They are working on boost removing items when it runs out.

xlvii. Senator Peri: The ramen place would be in the Stu? Would it be replacing something? Last spring, the ice cream machine was removed from Freshens, will it come back?

1. Jessica Eads: They did not say it was a replacement, just moving it. The soft serve is not on the list because no one uses the ice cream vending machine.

xlviii. Senator Ehrlich: There are all these cool options. How are the conditions of the food prep areas going to be? Over the summer, I have seen things regarding the conditions in the back of the house that concern me?

1. Jessica Eads: There is a space for dry goods, soil station, refrigerator, food prep, office space etc. This should make a big difference. It is designed for modern living.

xlix. Senator Vira: You asked if we wanted like a Qdoba or a Burger King or a bigger Starbucks or Dunkin? Is there any update on this? Also, can the bits fries be everywhere as many of my friends think they are better?

1. Jessica Eads: ABP is dying, so their products are slowly disappearing. There were questions of whether dunkin would move in ABP’s location and remove the quad.

l. Senator Hoffman: My favorite thing on campus is the bits salad, will this change?

1. Jessica Eads: This will not be changed.

li. Senator Bruso: I really admire the admissions plan and think it is great. If this does not get done over the summer, what is the contingency plan?

1. Jessica Eads: It’s absolutely going to get done. We timed it out so things that would take time were ordered already. We started the student center dining area way later and we got it down and we started way later.

lii. Senator Gillani: For the current commuter lounge, will that be closed off? For the ice cream, could there be a dip n’ dot machine with cups?

1. Jessica Eads: There are different spaces that people call the commuter lounge, but if you’re talking about a space outside Anita’s office, then that will always exist. But if that office is moved, then this would be something to rethink including parking shifts.

liii. Senator Pierre: I just wanted to ask about the students where they could find this presentation? Are there any places where there could be a veteran/community space?

1. Jessica Eads: The veterans are going to have their own space in the lower level of memorial hall. We want to make sure the designers are leaning into things that are important to you. Yella is coming now and it will come in the student center this Spring.

liv. Senator Urban: For the menu for the pizza place in bits as of now, if the cauliflower pizza is headed out, will there be any gluten-free options?

1. Jessica Eads: I think there will definitely be gluten-free pasta; I am not sure about pizza.

lv. Senator Gillani: For a new place, will there be halal and kosher options?

1. Jessica Eads: There will be in the market. But for halal, halal shack will be there.

lvi. Senator Araba: Regarding the bus shutdown, are they going to be active for tours again?

1. It’s a huge issue for students, faculty and staff who rely on it, and we don’t have buses.

lvii. Senator Urban: The career boutique was closed and I had to steal something off the mannequin, what can be done to extend the hours of operation of this?

1. Jessica Eads: Steve supervises the career center and he has been doing a lot of work on the boutique. I will work with him on this.

lviii. Chair Peri: About the crossing on California Avenue, I was walking to class and a car went across the crosswalk and almost hit me. The ramps near the crosswalk tend to flood. Could there be a raised crosswalk?

1. Jessica Eads: We can do that on our property and California is not our property. I have been talking about this, and we can make repairs to the road but we will ask for it. That traffic light took us years. We are trying to move the traffic away. We own some of the houses near public safety. If we go too close to Hempstead turnpike, it becomes too close so we have to keep it further away. We are toying with the idea of making weller parkway grass. We are looking at getting parking experts to talk about some of these things like systems for bikes.

lix. Senator Pierre: I wanted to ask about the town hall when many black students realized they did not have the best experience? What is your takeaway and what initiatives could be taken to improve this?

1. Jessica Eads: We have something that is brewing with public safety that our students are not loving how they are being treated. The president and I have been working with Jerry about regular training for our officers. We also have a consultant coming in to look at cameras on campus. I am working on regular meetings with leaders of our identity groups and I have a group chat. The president of BLAC and I have been working on getting all students who want to be involved to be able to do so. We have been talking about black history month, and how university can help celebrate and talk about it more. We are working to try to provide various forums for people to give us feedback so students feel seen and heard. I am hoping that works. In addition to what people are feeling on campus, there is so much happening in the world, and we can control what is happening here. Cameras and training are the way. We are taking public safety out of the lock out process so that the RA or RD can assist with this instead. These situations create frustration and more fights. Sometimes public safety is abrupt and can be very quick and hang up. We are thinking of a switch board for people who are not an officer and are more likely to engage in conversation like a student or grad student.

lx. Secretary Danek: For the 13th floor of Enterprise Hall, there is gym equipment that can't be used because of a lack of supervision. Right now it’s just a few rooms interconnected and a central tv. Is there anything being done for this?

1. Jessica Eads: We have not thought about the lounge in enterprise but this is something we can potentially explore. We have an employee who is there to manage the overnight at Hofstra and some of that is his personal stuff.

lxi. VP Young: For the night shuttle there is a great demand to offer 8pm and 9pm times. Many people who have late classes would take advantage of this and I feel like it could replace the 3am-4am slot.

1. Jessica Eads: I can ask about the 3-4 am situation.

lxii. Chair Chauhan: Last time we talked about the dining dollar vending machine project. Are there any updates regarding this?

1. Jessica Eads: It is still on our agenda and we are working on revising our agreement with Compass.

lxiii. Senator Vira: What is the status on having more prayer rooms on campus?

1. Jessica Eads: The President just authorized the budget to work on 2 prayer rooms on the lower floor of the student student center. That will free up space upstairs and we are trying to set up room for a confessional space. We are thinking it will be in the interfaith office. In the commuter lounge, maybe we can take that side and make it interfaith.

c. Club Check-In, CREATIVZ

i. Presentation

1. Sakari Clendinen (President of CREATIVZ): We just became a club last semester. We were founded from CSA in 2023 due to the number of events we dance at, and we are no longer exclusively Caribbean. We have performed at other schools in the past, and hope to continue to do so. We have been to IEI and SGA events. This semester, we are performing for a number of events. We are hosting our own event including other organizations like Strictly Steppin’. We host auditions every semester. Legends have flexible schedules and can commit more, and icons are less flexible and shy. We also have people on the technical side. Our budgetary needs include a location to dance (technician services and dj services), costumes (outfits and shoes for performances and collabs) and props and extras. For future events, we need funding for transportation so we can compete in competitions at other schools.

a. Senator Pierre: You said the last day of tryouts is today. Will there more opportunities for people who wanted to try out?

i. Sakari Clendinen (President of CREATIVZ): There are more tryouts to see if you’d be a legend or icon, and are available rather than whether you are in or not.

b. 10 minute deliberation

c. Chair Ahmad: They are a solid club and everyone submitted their attendance sheet. They have a lot of collaboration events and are getting notifications from nonHofstra schools. We were talking about having them perform at SGA event.

d. Senator Pierre: CREATIVZ is definitely a staple for black organizations at Hofstra. Their requests are within the parameters of the policy series. I've seen the hard work and energy and this is something that would help them.

e. Senator Vira: It seems a lot of people are going to this club and they are doing well.

f. Chair Peri: There are lots of opportunities for those who are not dancers.

ii. Senator Vira moves to complete the check-in process for Creativz dance team as of February 2026.

1. Congratulations Creativz!

i. Presented by Chair Peri

1. Chair Peri: I realized in the constitution that the appropriations chair or comptroller could be a treasurer of a club, and I think that would be unfair. So this SA is adding that you can’t be a treasurer of any other club if you have any of these positions.

i. Senator Urban: Does this apply to other positions such as President and VP and Secretary?

ii. Chair Peri: This already applies to the president and vice president. I just copied that and substituted the words.

iii. Senator Ehrlich: Would the club have to hold a special election if someone new was elected appropriations chair or comptroller?

iv. Chair Peri: Our elections are before most elections.
