1. VP Cornell Craig: I have come today to share the results of the sense of belonging survey that we administered last fall. We wanted to do an assessment of our campus culture, including the experience of our students and in the classroom space. There is also information that each dean received specific to their population. This is baseline data so we want to look at change over time. When we do it in 2 years, we will analyze growth then. We did undergraduate and graduate students non-law and non-medical. We looked at SGA and how they can help make the campus a good learning environment. Students that feel more engaged and belonging on campus, perform better. Tracking this sends a message that this is important to us but we have to measure it. Administered November 3rd - 24th. We had a 16% response rate, 18$ undergraduate and 13% graduate. This was a good start and
it’s hard to get a new survey off the ground. Things were scaled for the most part - Likert scale. There were some open-ended questions. We identified key demographic groups, social belonging vs academic belonging, correction to overall exclusion. Strength s were high levels of respect and acceptance (73%, top -two boxes), strong classroom fairness (82%), and school environments perceived as inclusive and supportive (>4 on most items). Lower scores were for feeling valued (65%), feeling part of the community (62%), and trust in leadership to respond to bias (64%). This is lower than we want it to be. Subgroups reporting lower belonging were students identifying as “other” gender, students of color, and continuing students. That is something to be aware of and something to continue on as a campus. These are great numbers: 75% pleased with their decision to attend, 73% feeling accepted and respected, included, being themselves and leadership demonstrating strong dedication to ensuring this. Many participants felt that their school creates community, encourages students to engage in activities, making students feel included and respected, and feeling secure. We know the value of being involved in clubs but if we are losing something when students are in the classrooms it is bad, so we want balance. We want to be responsive to these situations. Most students (60%) never or rarely felt excluded, while 10% of students felt excluded often or always. 40% are experiencing some sort of exclusion. You can feel this based on your own experience, family, home, household experiences. This can be an individual thing but you can also feel excluded based on campus settings. We know 0% is not realistic but over time we want exclusion rates to be much smaller. Students reported reasons for feeling excluded. Political views, ethnicity, academic performance, mental health etc. were explanations presented. Students could have filled out many responses. Some people filled out options of not knowing and reasons not listed. Feelings of exc lusion were aligned with multiple groups like ofgender, color, underrepresented, disability, off- campus, etc. There are different categories of exclusion. Students gave feedback and shared the value of being involved in clubs and study groups, saying that they feel included and found their people. These show the value of being involved and engaged on campus. Recommendations include strengthening campus -wide belonging,addressing declines in belonging among continuing
students, improving school-level support and classroom inclusion, and addressing equity perception gaps. We need to do work as an institution to ensure we are creating an environment where everyone feels valued. I have an infographic that I will share with you via email that makes everything concise for students.
2. Chair Dzaveluri: What specific trainings are faculties going under that would be beneficial on dealing with these issues with students?
a. VP Craig: We get all faculty on orientation. We reinforce these values. They also have training opportunities to learn on a school level. They learn what is the best and inclusive way to discuss information. We practice different ways in which students get information. These are things we talk about. We focus on university design that appeals to all, looking at examples we use.
3. Chair Ahmad: Is the belonging survey apart of the Middle States Survey Hofstra is using to check in? Have you considered decreasing the number of questions for future surveys?
a. VP Craig: It is going to be used but no. Middle states want to know what we are doing for our community. The survey was sidelined for a while but now we are doing it. This is the first time we are doing the survey and there were a number of hurdles. We are looking at how to cut it down. A lot of students who started the survey didn't finish it. We are looking to incorporate faculty more so you can do it as part of class time, and also giving out t-shirts etc.
4. Chair Orellana: Looking at the data and analyzing and compiling it, what would you do to improve these concerns heading into the next survey?
a. VP Craig: Yea, we definitely want to make belonging and talking about belonging, really mainstream. We don't want to wait for something bad to happen to have these conversations. We need an environment where students feel comfortable.
5. Senator Araba: As a commuter, what initiatives have you undertaken to help commuter students feel like they belong on campus?
a. VP Craig: Commuters are very important. What is interesting about surveys is that our commuters do a lot better than other schools in terms of academic performance
and engagement on campus, but that doesn’t mean we can't make improvements. We want to do what we can to make commuters feel more engaged.
6. Senator Pierre: Do you have any other ways to promote the survey more and are there any upcoming initiatives for juniors and seniors?
a. VP Craig: There are a lot of things happening now and we need to look at what is happening now and compare that data. There can be things that zarb is doing that is not happening in the hurbert school, hypothetically. Faculty know about it, the deans know about it so it will be more apart of our community. What happened 2 years ago was what has always been done. We will definitely continue to get the word out, get academic affairs involved and so on.
7. Senator Mansour: Are there ways to better reach out to freshmen about opportunities we have here at Hofstra?
a. VP Craig: The important thing is to tap into the ways and channels where students are communicating, not sitting at an email. We want students to talk to other students who are using and benefiting from resources so others can see it. We want formal presentations and also soft cells.
8. Chair Dzaveluri: I have had many meetings with Dr. Blue and HCLAS about religious absences, and I want to find out what your department is doing to support the students that have religious absences.
a. VP Craig: We are having a meeting on this with Dr. Blue and the Provost. We are going to look at religious observances. There have been a lot of different interpretations on both sides. We tell students to inform faculty at the beginning of the semester as you know when these dates are. We will make sure everyone is on the same page and then rekindle that with the hofstra community.
9. VP Young: Is there any data you wished you could have received in this survey that you want to get in the next one>
a. VP Craig: We got a lot of good information - all demographics, including commuters students. We haven’t had our post mortem yet to assess the data, but we are always looking to get more data from students.
10. Senator Mansour: Is there something we can do about things like mental health, deaths, etc? Everyone handles things differently, so absence limits can be a burden.
a. VP Craig: That is challenging and is a harder thing to manage than our religious observance policy just because life doesn’t stop. We want to create an environment where faculty are compassionate and responsive to things but there needs to be boundaries. It wouldn’t be fair for students to miss half the semester. It is something that we need to keep an eye on. We want to create an environment where faculty trust students and we respect both sides.
11. Senator Araba: There are a lot of conservative students who do not feel comfortable, so how are we going to address this issue?
a. VP Craig: One thing is to make sure that we openly communicate what diversity is including different philosophical and political opinions. We need to be explicit that we are including the entire umbrella. We are not a good community if we only talk about s ome things. We should be able to have dialogue for growth and knowledge.
12. Senator Pierre: One of the areas you included was religious and philosophical views? Why did you separate these two, and also political views?
a. VP Craig: There is some overlapping but all philosophy isn’t political. We want to give space for students to express themselves, although I challenge the idea that anyone is A-political.
13. Chair Malhotra: We have been spearheading veterans -related topics here like the resource center. We opened the Student Veterans of America chapter. How do you plan on including the military population and veterans’ community within your surveys? We have 180 students using VA benefits that are militaryconnected.
a. VP Craig: We will definitely be tapping into that group. Our numbers for veterans was low so I want to get that number up higher, but I do want to target this community. There is a big veteran population and we want to take a more targeted approach.
14. Senator Pierre: How will we continue to keep the clubs great and keep the positivity? How will you look at what is going on in clubs and apply it to other areas that are not doing so well?
a. VP Craig: One thing is to highlight what is happening in clubs and another thing that we’re getting started this year is the impact awards. These acknowledge community members, offices, academic offices that really contribute to the excellence of the insti tution. It will acknowledge what has been done. Good work will be acknowledged. A lot of great things are happening on campus.
15. Senator Subramanian: When it comes to surveys and targeted initiatives, do you have plans to make populations that feel uncomfortable feel more welcomed when those things are not supposed to be talked about?
a. VP Craig: One thing I didn’t show in this presentation is that shared conversations happen more in distribution courses. This is expected, but what we want to do is to involve these in the STEM field. We want to step out of the traditional paradigm and we shouldn’t be afraid to step out of this.

1. Secretary Danek: This senatorial action updates language regarding the social chair and secretary. Under minutes, I added that the secretary should maintain and publish the minutes and put this into policy. I struck out the social chair because I am moving it to a separate section. For ethics and archivist I added more explicit language as to how it is being done. I moved the social chair because it is under a separate office. I outlined how these positions are assigned. I kept language relating to budget, and the social change should have access to the internal budget.
2. Comptroller Skeldon: I move for a friendly on 104.1 to capitalize “cabinet” like it is in the rest of the document.
3. Senator Pierre: What’s the difference between shall and may? Earlier in the senate, there was a form given out. What is the difference between form and application process?
4. Secretary Danek: It just means hanging it from a requirement to something that is recommended. The form is dependent on future senates but I assume future senates will follow that senators can apply for these positions, while social chair would be somebody new. In the cabinet, we look at the applications and based on discussions, we pick. That is the nomination process, as we pick
from the pool of applicants. The secretary has the power to pick who is best out of those who apply but anybody can apply.

Meet with Sev if you are interes ted in running for a position, don’t campaign or get signatures in academic or SGA spaces, and review the policy series for more information.
