1. Dean Christy: I do agree that my office is not centrally located. It is hard for folks to know where I am. People don’t really hang out there. I sent Jessica Eads that statement. Hofstra is expensive. Most of you don’t live on this island and your parents don’t live with you on campus. My role is to do that on your behalf. For what you pay to go here, someone should be here to help you navigate when someone is minimizing your voice. It is up to me to amplify your voice. Faculty is not being very responsible about the doctor’s notes so I intervened there. I do have jurisdiction over your well being and if I have valid reasons. I don’t hold your hand. If you are wrong you are wrong. I also have that harsh reality. The other part is giving your families the har sh reality that they don’t know who you are on campus. It is on me to help you navigate between your family and who you are. I navigate anything and everything that happens outside the classroom. I like stirring things up. I treat you like my child because I have seen how your mental health plays on you. Sometimes faculty requires another adult to speak to them. I also deal with the student emergency fund including meal cards etc. You want to get this when you reach towards finals. Meals aren’t cheap, and I know the deals aren’t that great. I also deal
with the community response team. When someone puts in a report, I talk to them and we come up with an action plan. I am a first gen student. I have lived a life that most of y’all have lived. I try to remind you of who you are and remind faculty that sometimes home isn’t safe. I previously worked in housing, but Jessica Eads had a different plan for me. My job is also to detain Jess when she goes too form. I don’t play about y’all nor Jessica Eads, who’s my righthand. I also work with Dr. Ahmed, Sev, and others. I work 24 hours, 7 days a week and wouldn’t change that for the world.
2. Senator Pierre: What is a typical meeting like for you?
a. Dean Christy: It depends. I have a faculty meeting that is inflexible. Usually I ask “walk me through how you got here.” It is about bringing them back to the basics.
3. Chair Ahmad: I want to shift the conversation. In your role you advocate for students. How will Hofstra navigate a speaker coming in for a club that many students may feel uncomfortable with? How would you advise students advocating for guest speakers for themselves?
a. Dean Christy: That’s hard to ask because you are asking levels about me. We know that Hofstra prides itself on allowing freedom of speech and expression. My hope is that there are still safety methods in place when something happens. I am still not privy to everything that is happening but I am hoping that when it gets to a higher level, there are measures in place. I would hope you are meeting with faculty to get an answer even though it may not always be an answer you want to hear.
4. Senator Urban: The meal card sounds like a really good opportunity and many students may not know about this. How do we get it out so more students can know about this?
a. Dean Christy: It is not something we advertise. It is something that is a resource. The student emergency fund is based on donations. It is something student leaders know and will share with the masses.
5. Chair Chauhan: When students come to you in a crisis, what is the action plan and do you connect them to student counseling services and would it be beneficial if they were the first point of contact?
a. Dean Christy: On our care emergency response team, there are 12 of us. For housing, we might meet with Anita Ellis, and a landlord. The majority of students don’t want to go to counseling, so they may never come back and trust me. There are levels and coun seling is usually the 3rd and 4th. I am aggressive with students that feel like their life doesn’t matter. There is a risk assessment which most schools usually follow.
6. Senator Pierre: The student funds are donation-based, where do the donations come from?
a. Dean Christy: Most of it comes from President Poser and the university. When it is rolled out at the end of the semester, we allocate to it. There are pockets of students who contribute to these areas.
7. Chair Ahmad: What are the major concerns you get from students, and in what areas would support from SGA be beneficial?
a. Dean Christy: I think the biggest thing is finances. The economy is hard so I try to listen. I try to talk with students about the financial situation that they began with. Who do I attach them to? I don’t have an answer there. Students want to identify wi th the person they are referred to. Juniors and seniors often feel no connection but I’ll look into the orientation leader route.
8. Senator Pierre: In regards to that, have you tried pairing them with a peer advisor? Have you thought of programs or a mentorship for this?
a. Dean Christy: We pair them with the organization. Some sit in our office because they have difficulties communicating. Programmes are another layer that I can’t do but I can bounce them over Sev. We have a peermentor track with Russ Smith, so students can be paired with someone they identify with from the start.
9. Chair Ahmad: Is there a student aide in your office?
a. Dean Christy: There are two student aids and a graduate student.
10. VP Young: When students are in a crisis situation, how do you separate yourself from being a therapist and get them the help they need?
a. Dean Christy: I am awkward at the moment. I center myself and then them. I do separate but I want to help. Sometimes I just listen. It is a building relationship.
11. Senator Pierre: Each graduating class is different. Do you treat classes differently from each other or the same?
a. Dean Christy: I treat everybody as they are. I don’t treat everyone the same. Law and graduates come with similar problems as undergraduates. I treat the individual differently but not the class.
12. President Quail: Do you ever feel students are uncomfortable coming to you because you are an administrator? Like a “wall” of some sort?
a. Dean Christy: I don’t think it is the wall. I think it is levels. Dean Christy’s personality may not be to their taste. That’s why they have different faculty members. They don’t have a clue of where my office is sometimes. It has to be strategic and thoug htful. People will find me because they know I exist.
13. Senator Chacon: How do you deal with different types of parents who raise their kids to a certain age? How do you experience cultural differences,
first gen students’ experiences, etc?
a. Dean Christy: I have no patience. I give them Jessica Eads’ email. The goal is for you to know who you are. I tell the parents. I try to go with open eyes and open hearts.
14. Senator Bokhari: You reach out via email if someone is concerned about a student. How do you reach out to students who are afraid of speaking or do not respond?
a. Dean Christy: I get ghosted quite often. I send a letter and then piggyback that with a text message. I say you are not in trouble, and I just want to know what is going on. That’s the only way I will get to y’all.
15. Chair Ahmad: You work with a lot of students via open office hours. Have any parents contacted you? How do you take care of yourself actively and deal with students actively if they view you as just an option??
a. Dean Christy: They did. I am still learning how to take care of myself. I don’t really get a shut off button. I go to church on Sundays all the way in Connecticut and that keeps me grounded. And I like to bowl. I can tell when a student doesn’t want to talk to me but I don’t care and I still push. The majority of students are nervous and want me to find out what they did before they admit they did it. I wish more students would be like I don’t know you like that. My personality is very loud and I need students to warm up to me. So many students come to me from referrals.
16. VP Young: Do you see a future of the dean of students office where there are there different roles with someone in charge of each of them?
a. Dean Christy: That is the goal. I was groomed for this role. Dr. Ahmed is getting there but not everyone’s patience level is like mine. In a perfect world, I would love that.
17. Senator Pierre: Is the student hearing board under your jurisdiction? How do you plan on growing it and interacting with how students are here? Your office is far away, how do you promote yourself being there and also other spaces? The town hall, a lot of people because black students had issues on campus, what have you done to help?
a. Dean Christy: Yes, they are. We have a lot of work to do. We recognize we need more community standards around clubs and organizations. It is based on trial and error, and that is a summer project. We are trying to promote that and nobody wants to be a sni tch. We need to show students that the board builds character. When freshmen come here, they see it in a negative light. I was there. The goal is for me to not hide that I am a woman of colour so students know I am here. I am also part of that now so when something is pushed in ethics points that comes to me. It is on
me to communicate we received it, we do an active investigation and then we close it. I don’t shy away from those types of conversations. We need to educate those that don’t look like me.

1. Comptroller Skeldon: This is proposing striking the victory fund and allocating that to rollover. The last time this fund was used was in Spring 2024 and it was only used for Club Sports. Campus Rec now funds club sports, so the only competitions we fund are for academic clubs. We have a separate fund for that, and when other clubs want money we have weekly allocations for that. We increased the funding40% for SGA Capital Fund and 20% for External Allocation Fund.
2. President Quail: Money sat in the victory fund doing nothing. The capital fund and external allocation fund do the most for students, so it makes sense to allocate it there now.
3. Senator Pierre: External funds is that for clubs? Does this take place in the next rollover or semester?
a. President Quail: Yes, it’s coming out of rollover and going into club funding. It is for clubs’ activities that are not internal. It would apply to leftover money from this semester.

1. Chair Peri: This is just changing the wording for weekly meetings. We added two points including clubs signing up for a waitlist and appropriations club prioritizing a club if the situation is time sensitive. This isn’t changing anything. It is just updating the policy.
2. Comptroller Skeldon: It is fixing wording and ensuring 5 slots are available per week, we operate on a weekly schedule.

1. Chair Ahmad: This involves removing e-board office hours and some constitution changes. Nobody is really doing them and many organizations said that it wasn’t reasonable. We also changed the repetition of some language. Many constitutions are also not unif orm
and clubs aren’t abiding by them. Every constitution will have the SGA preamble and policies that state how elections will be held, including that it will be once a year either spring and fall semester. There should also be standard measures for impeachmen t. Even advisors don’t know when offices change. We also specified that a constitution must satisfy all the requirements.
2. Chair Peri: Regarding elections taking place per one academic year, this is to stop constant turnover.
3. VP Young: Is this restricting or allowing? You can only hold elections once per year?
a. Chair Ahmad: Yes, and this will only apply to the main 4 e-board positions. I am open about adding language to include special elections.
4. Chair Chauhan: After the senatorial action is passed, many club constitutions say that elections are semesterly, how will this be handled?
a. Chair Ahmad: Every advisor is going to be looking over all the constitutions for their clubs over the summer, and this will be enforced by the future CR chair.
5. Senator Urban: For enforcement regarding new clubs, how are people creating new clubs going to be aware of these changes?
a. Chair Ahmad: Next week I will be sending a constitution to OSLE including more information that I just got feedback from Sev today.
6. Senator Pierre: Prior to this, how were office hours taken into consideration?
a. Chair Ahmad: It only went to the CR chair as it only makes sense for it to go to them. There were QR codes in every single office space and there were at least 80 responses, but they lacked usefulness.
7. Chair Ahmad moves to propose language to section 11 item 1 “This request shall be at the discretion of any member of the Student Government Association Executive Board, the Club Resources Chair, and the Appropriations Chair”

8. Senator Thani: If a club uses funds to buy something, can anyone use it?
a. Chair Peri: Yes, because it is essentially our item. It is so we don’t have to fund the same item many times.
b. Chair Ahmad: This ensures we are not spending so much money on the same stuff.
9. President Quail: Could this create an incentive for clubs to take things offcampus and not keep it within the space
a. Chair Peri: Yes, I see the concern.
10. Senator Urban: There is no language to tell clubs in advance. How are we going to notify them?
a. Chair Ahmad: I think most E-Boards would know to notify the club.
b. Chair Peri: We are not going to just ransack a club’s storage.
11. Comptroller Skeldon moves to strike language from section 11 “and stored within a club’s office space.”

12. Senator Vira: When clubs do allocations, how do you keep track of what they order?
a. Chair Peri: We do look back at the club’s allocations and the club closet.
b. Comptroller Skeldon: We have a document that records everything funded for every club.
13. Senator Pierre: It says it is up to the discretion of those members of SGA, is it at discretion of one member or all of them.
a. Chair Peri: 6 people have the power to make this request and I feel these are the ones who should have the power to make these requests.
b. Chair Ahmad: So basically, we have given tabletop 200 board games. If they request, say, chess, we will put them in contact with chess club.
14. Chair Chauhan: I do not understand that if it is something we already do, putting this in writing may mean e-boards lack trust in us? It is not our stuff and we should not have authority over all of it. Other e-boards may look at it and there could be a lack of trust. What I do not understand is the thought process to put this into policy. I am taking this in a negative connotation.
a. Chair Peri: Everything is ours as we buy it. This saves money and we are lending their items to other clubs. I see your points and we want to add to the policy to provide more clarity for clubs. Yes it can be taken negatively but we want clubs to know what we are doing.
b. Chair Ahmad: Specifically I chose to include the language “borrow.” Stuff funded by us is for every single club. This policy I do not think will be read as long as we build relationships with these organizations. We are doing this to prove we are not abusing power.
15. Senator Pierre: There should be a period after organization. What is policy if the item comes back destroyed?
a. Chair Ahmad: This is a really fair point and there is no procedure for how the replacement would go.
b. Chair Peri: I believe there is a policy somewhere about damaged items.
16. Senator Noel: Would you need to check with the club before taking their item from their room?
a. Chair Ahmad: In theory, yes we could.
b. Chair Peri: This request in section A, we should be notifying clubs. We should tell the club and let them know what is going on.
17. Senator Vira: Are you going to notify clubs? They should have priority regarding what clubs need access to it.
a. Chair Ahmad: I agree and that is exactly what happens. We did it for a previous social event and we borrowed board games from the Table Top club.
18. Senator Pierre: Would the proposed language be redundant or fix this issue?
a. Chair Ahmad: Depends on the language being proposed. If we say any item being funded by SGA can be requested by SGA for use by another organization would this fix the issue?
b. Chair Peri: I feel like it is pretty explicit, but maybe adding that we would notify clubs.

1. Comptroller Skeldon: Nothing much from us this week. Next week is the start of President/Vice President campaigning. This week we sent out the packets and confirmed eligibility. Info-sessions for senators start next week. President/Vice President campaigning opens at 9am on Monday. Senator packets are due on Thursday, April 16th at 12:00 pm. Friday after, eligibility will be sent out. Review the reminders and rules in the series. The debate is Monday 4/20 at 1pm in Breslin 100.

1. Senator Pierre: Will this be permanent for the future? If it is the same discussion every time might as well do the other thing. Is there a distance between you and faculty in terms of the emotion behind it? Can students read their names out loud?
a. President Quail: They want this to be permanent. In a logistical way it does not hold water for people emotionally. The general belief from admin is that students who went here right now were in the transition period and they want to see if this is a susta ined concern and they do not expect to keep having the same kind of concern. I have expressed concerns to faculty, but students also feel happy that they can vet the pronunciation of their name. I have expressed it feels impersonal for students to have their names read by AI. That doesn’t sound feasible to me. I have talked about what alternatives could look like. We talked about having a female voice as well. I can ask about a different way of having a recording.
2. Chair Ahmad: There is a lavender graduation. Do they say students’ names there?
a. President Quail: Generally yes, those names are still being said by the respective deans. The more we tell people what is going on, the better informed they can be.
3. Senator Pierre: If there is enough discontent, could administration change this policy?

i. You have 20 minutes to create an Instagram story graphic for Programming Wellness Chair Aari’s “Take Back the Night: Poster and Mirror Making” event.

v. At the end of the timer, each committee member will share their graphic and we will vote on which one is used to promote the real event!
1. I might make small edits to the graphic that is chosen according to feedback from Aari and to ensure it matches our branding
