A MESSAGE FROM OUR DEAN Welcome to this overview of the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science. Higher education has certainly faced unprecedented challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic this past year, but I am pleased to say that with much preparation for the return to in-class learning and with safety protocols in place, 80% of our undergraduate classes were held in person in fall 2020. With undergraduates comprising 90% of our student population, we are heavily invested in undergraduate education and currently offer our students 15 routes to a bachelor’s degree. In the 2021 U.S. News & World Report survey, the DeMatteis School ranked in the top 15% of the 220 non-PhD-granting engineering schools in the country. One main reason we rank so highly is that we hire faculty based primarily on their enthusiasm for teaching students and preparing them to become professionals. Also, many of our faculty involve undergraduate students in their research work, and they encourage those students to present papers at conferences or serve as co-authors on journal papers. In fact, our Advanced Summer Program in Research is an ideal way to engage motivated students in cutting-edge research. Students selected for this program are paid to work for 10 weeks on a well-defined project with faculty supervision. The opportunity to learn research skills in this environment is unparalleled and is a major asset on a new graduate’s resume. Similarly, our Women’s Summer Program in Computing/Engineering is a unique five-week program (also with a stipend) designed to encourage young women finishing their first year at the DeMatteis School to interact with female professionals to build confidence and gain insight about career options. Another program that widens students’ horizons is Hofstra in Silicon Valley, which connects junior and senior computer science students with professionals at high-profile West Coast companies that specialize in cybersecurity, gaming, entertainment, and other areas that rely on a tech-savvy workforce. We ensure that students have access to the full range of our facilities and benefit from hands-on experience through a variety of laboratory courses. Every piece of equipment in our labs – from the atomic force microscope in one of the biomedical labs to the supersonic wind tunnel in the aerodynamics lab – is used by undergraduate students. The DeMatteis School is much more than a place to earn a degree; here, our students are inspired to apply what they learn, build their skills, and develop the ideas that can help change the world for the better.

DEPARTMENT OF ENGINEERING The Department of Engineering at the DeMatteis School is committed to providing undergraduate and graduate students with an educational experience that equips them to contribute to making the world a better place. The department offers degrees in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and engineering science (biomedical or civil option), all of which are ABET-accredited. In addition, it offers degrees in bioengineering and in civil engineering, as well as in the interdisciplinary field of industrial engineering. The first two years in all the undergraduate engineering programs are dedicated largely to a common curriculum, with a strong emphasis on mathematics, physical sciences, and fundamental engineering tools for analysis and design. The third and fourth years are devoted to coursework in the field of specialization. Our first-year engineering program focuses on design — a vital topic in all areas of engineering. In the fall semester, we utilize a lecture and laboratory-based course to teach the fundamentals of design using exercises that include teamwork, communication, and creativity. In the spring semester, we broaden the study of design to consider the concepts and issues that engineers face in their work. Students use the knowledge and skills acquired in this first year to immerse themselves in their studies and research.

“In the DeMatteis School, the instruction you receive in the classroom really comes alive in the laboratory. I’ve gained valuable hands-on experience working on cuttingedge technology you might not find at other schools. There is also an emphasis on teamwork and collaboration in problemsolving, which reflects many real-world professional environments. I feel confident that I can pursue a career that not only will be successful but can make a difference too.” — Eric Samuel ’21 Electrical Engineering

“The small class size at Hofstra allowed me to develop my interests and choose a path toward my goals. I was able to work with my professors on two research projects outside of the classroom, which enabled me to write published papers, acquire new computer skills, and learn the foundations of experimentation. These experiences, along with my professors’ mentorship, have given me a solid foundation as I pursue the PhD program in mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of Virginia.” — Laurie Elkowitz ‘21 Mechanical Engineering, with an aerospace concentration

ENGINEERING UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS BS in BIOENGINEERING Bioengineering, or biomedical engineering, bridges the gap between the life sciences and physical sciences by applying engineering concepts, methods, and techniques to biology and medicine. An understanding of fundamental physiological processes using engineering methodology requires a broad background in basic engineering, sciences, and mathematics. Biomedical engineers design instruments, devices, and software; bring together knowledge from many technical sources to develop new procedures; and conduct research needed to solve clinical problems. In industry, they may create products that require an in-depth understanding of living systems and technology. They frequently work in research and development or in quality assurance. BS in CIVIL ENGINEERING Civil engineering is a diverse field. Civil engineers design and supervise large construction projects, including roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and systems for water supply and sewage treatment. They also work in the design of transportation systems, green building solutions, and large-scale environmental projects. Many civil engineers hold administrative positions ranging from supervisor of a construction site to city engineer. Others work in design, construction, or research, and have a tremendous impact on the infrastructure of our region and the world. BA in ENGINEERING SCIENCE The BA in Engineering Science is designed for students who wish to combine a broad exposure to the main fields of engineering with a focus on the liberal arts or business. Tracks may be structured to accommodate students interested in pursuing careers in medicine or engineering business operations, or in writing for technical publications, among other options. BE in ENGINEERING SCIENCE The BE in Engineering Science is an ABET-accredited degree that offers options in biomedical and civil engineering, and can serve as a general engineering degree with a strong emphasis on applied science.

The work of electrical and electronics engineers is often similar. Both use engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks. Electronics engineers who work for the federal government research, develop, and evaluate electronic devices used in diverse industries, such as aviation, computing, transportation, and manufacturing. They work on satellites, flight systems, radar and sonar systems, and communications systems. BS in ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING (Computer Option) The computer option in the electrical engineering program applies the principles of both electrical engineering and computer science to the design of computers and digital systems, focusing on the interface between hardware and software. BS in INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING Industrial engineering combines engineering and management skills to better design and operate complex systems, such as manufacturing operations, assembly lines, or hospital emergency rooms. Industrial engineering is distinguished from other engineering disciplines by its focus on problems that involve human effort and energy; production systems; economy in the use of money, materials, and time; and a high utilization of the social sciences. BS in MECHANICAL ENGINEERING The BS in Mechanical Engineering is an ABET-accredited degree that prepares students to research, design, develop, build, and test mechanical devices, including tools, engines, and complex dynamical systems. Design is introduced early in the program’s curriculum, and all graduates are expected to be knowledgeable in both the thermal/fluids and the solid mechanics areas of mechanical engineering. Extensive laboratory involvement provides valuable insights into experimental methods and, in some cases, original research. Mechanical engineering students become proficient in working with computers to produce and analyze designs, and simulate and test dynamical systems. A concentration in aerospace engineering is available to students interested in careers in the aircraft industry.

BS in ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING The BS in Electrical Engineering is an ABET-accredited degree that prepares students to design, develop, test, and supervise the manufacturing of electrical equipment such as motors, radar and navigation systems, communications systems, or power generation equipment. Other program graduates design the electrical systems of automobiles and aircraft and broadcast and communications systems, from portable music players to global positioning systems (GPS). Many also work in areas closely related to computer hardware.
