Role of Provider Expansion in New York

Prior research indicates that racial groups with higher rates of underdiagnosed asthma report greater difficulty accessing health care. Building on these findings, this study examines current pediatric access to care and equity in New York state. Although a substantial body of research has focused on improving healthcare accessibility through insurance coverage, relatively few studies have evaluated access to care through the availability of pediatric providers. The findings suggest that recent healthcare policies have significantly improved provider availability for children covered by Medicaid and CHIP – and have advanced healthcare equity.
Dr. Jyoti Thapaliya is an educator, researcher, and nonprofit leader. She teaches biology to undergraduates at Hofstra University and Hunter College and works collaboratively with nonprofits, small businesses, and academic institutions to advance equitable community engagement. She holds a PhD in Biology and an MBA from the City University of New York.
