Spring 2026
Checklist to Prepare for Homesteading

Create my roommate group if living in a multi-occupancy room
Ensure my requested roommate has submitted their application and accepted my roommate request
Log back into my housing application when the homesteading process begins to homestead my space
Who Can Homestead?
All Spring semester active resident students may homestead their room for the next academic year except those in:
• First-Year–only buildings: Netherlands Complex, Stuyvesant Hall
• First-Year rooms in High-Rise buildings
• Rooms/buildings affected by renovations or capacity changes
Triple rooms in C2, Constitution, Estabrook, and Vander Poel
Double rooms converting to lounges (Constitution Hall)
*Residence Life will notify students via email if their room is ineligible for homesteading*
Homesteading – High-Rises
Can residents automatically retain their current roommates for the following academic year?
• No. Homesteading their own space does not guarantee students will keep their roommates.
• If only one roommate homesteads, only that student will reserve a spot for the next academic year
• Each student must homestead their own space or can homestead their own and their roommate's space by forming a roommate group on the housing application
• Spaces that are not homesteaded will be available for selection during the General Room Selection Process
Homesteading – Suite-Style Areas
Can residents automatically retain their current roommates and suitemates the following academic year?
• No. However, if all roommates and suitemates homestead their spaces, they will stay together for the next academic year
• Students in suite-style housing cannot homestead their suitemates' spaces. Each suitemate must homestead their own space or both their own and their roommate's space by forming a roommate group on the housing application
• Spaces that are not homestead will be available for selection during the General Room Selection Process
Homesteading Pull-In Process
If a student knows there will be a vacancy in their room, they can "pull-in" another student, provided an available space exists
The student being "pulled-in" must have a completed Housing Application and accepted the roommate request from the student pulling them in
Commuting, Study Abroad, and New Students can be pulled-in if they have:
1. Paid the $300 Housing Deposit and Enrollment fee (if new to Hofstra)
2. Completed a Housing Application and accepted the roommate request
