b. Welcome Senior Vice President for Student Enrollment, Engagement, and Success, Jessica Eads.

i. Jess Eads: I don’t have many updates. I have sent many emails. I hope you can tell me about things that are working, things that could be improved in the spring. We are excited to do some work in Bits and Bytes over the summer. We are going to take the space that used to be CUA, blow out the walls, and make it a commuter lounge with napping pods and spaces where you can take zoom classes. You’ll have a member of my team there to help navigate. It will be a space where you will have down time, and get students out of their cars. We have been trying to push commuters to this side of campus. To give you a space on the academic side is important. We hired an architect and I will be spearheading that operation with facilities. I would like to hear your thoughts on this. We are also doing a series of bathrooms in Nassau Suffolk. We are going to make sure all the rooms have the same furniture, and then within 3 years renovate the other rooms. That’s all my updates. Food, comfort, residence halls. We do have a Director of Reslife, Novia Ramsay. She wants to make this the best residential space.

1. Chair Ahmad: In the past hour, I have heard a lot about AI saying the names of graduate students at graduation. Can you speak on this?

a. Jess Eads: I was at a conference in DC the last two days. Yes, in fact. Students will be able to put in the pronunciation of their name so that is pronounced correctly. This is something schools around the country are doing all the time. The timing of that pronunciation will also be correct. This screws it up for families who are watching from afar. It is where we do need to go. We are behind the times, and other schools are doing this. I expressed to Terry how students may be feeling. I am personal and I know this doesn’t feel personal but it’s also bad for us to pronounce your name wrong after 4 years. It wasn’t a decision I would actually make but we are trying it for now.

2. Senator Vira: On the commuter lounge, where would that be located and when would it start?

a. Jess Eads: It’s going to be in Bits and Bytes. Construction will start right after commencement and will be open when you come back. I will post pictures in the pulse groupchat so you guys can vote. Administrators from all over campus are in the group chat and it allows for raw feedback. It is a great way for me to know what is happening. Anytime we are looking for quick feedback, I put something there.

3. Chair Dzaveluri: For the comment on AI, we may be behind in aspects and there will always be a university that is ahead. But, Hofstra has a community and bringing OpenAI here can abolish that community given pushback from students. This has created a gap between faculty and students. I understand the OpenAI partnership and how it creates a safe space for students to use AI and I do not have a problem with it given it is optional. The problem is using AI-generated stickers of Mack, the AI athletics video, and AI voices can mess up in the middle of the graduation ceremony. How are we going to make the rest of the student body aware of AI’s benefits and why this is being done?

a. Jess Eads: I just want to say that in some respect it is our job to push things on you that are good for you. You are the first generation dealing with this but it is normal and as employees if you want jobs, you need to know how to use these tools. I really hope we are not wedging the gap.

December is a smaller graduation so we think let’s just try with that and see. My daughter showed me how crazy and dramatic AI can be. It is so commonplace today. We are going through this together and it’s going to be bad but we will get through it. The next group may not feel this way. Maybe this isn’t the year to use AI and let’s mispronounce students’ names. Every time we think we are fixing something, we bring something else. It will be interesting to see how it goes. I encourage those who are skeptical, to look at the graduation and see how it goes.

4. Senator Smook: I feel as if this undermines our sense of community. Hofstra has a tight-knit community and this hurts it. AI will not always be perfect but I would rather have my name be read by a person and we should not just go to AI because other schools are. Hofstra could be relying too much on it nowadays.

a. Jess Eads: I think the issue is when you generalize that statement. It is our job to make you uncomfortable and make you deal with reality. That is something that is here and not going away. It is our responsibility to help you here and make you equipped for the modern world. If you are not, you will not get a job. I hear you but we have to find a better way to say these things so you get what you want.

5. Secretary Danek: As for the new commuter lounge in Memorial Hall, how do you think that will be logistically and how will it be different from the current commuter lounge. What are some specific differences?

a. Jess Eads: I don’t expect it to be a hallway near the bathrooms. I don’t think what we have now is a commuter lounge. I looked at good commuter lounges across the country and what are the aspects. I just know the napping pods. I am expecting a big open space with lots of comfortable spaces to sit, private and public nooks, farm table spaces, charging spaces, brighter and dimmer areas, spaces to take zoom calls, couches. I want to fix the steps. I would like it to be accessible on both sides. Less tight and narrow spaces and less darkness. I want it to be happy and it smells and feels good. We just got the architect’s contract. If there is something you have seen as friends’ campuses, send it to me.

6. Senator Chauhan: I heard there is an initiative to integrate dining dollars with vending machines. Is there an update on this?

a. Jess Eads: Compass is owned by a bigger company. The bigger company owns the vending machines. The two can’t be friends. We will not renew our contract with Compass unless they fix the vending machine issue. I really hope we are getting there. The issue is that Compass will have to make a plan with this vending machine and this will take some of their revenue because the dining dollars goes to Compass. Some of these things take me a long time to negotiate but it is coming.

7. Chair Malhotra: One of the initiatives that my committee is working on is creating a veterans’ lounge. We used to have a veterans alumni chapter, but this space is now occupied by P-Safe. Nassau, Suffolk, and Farmingdale all have spaces for veterans, and as someone in ROTC, I would like to have this space. Facilities admin told me about the plan for Memorial Hall and floated the idea of using some of the space there for veterans hall. The faculty lounge there is not used. We have ROTC cadets in this room, those in grad school, and retired captains, so Memorial would be a great area and right in the middle of everything.

a. Jess Eads: This is the first I’m hearing of this, and it just happens that the head of Facilities was in ROTC. Let’s think of the ROTC population, where is it best to have the hall? I love this. I think it would have to be separate from the commuters lounge because these are two different needs. I want to be able to meet the needs of both groups separately.

8. Senator Urban: Regarding the sleeping pods, Hofstra experimented with the idea. Are these the same ones or are you purchasing new ones?

a. Jess Eads: I would be purchasing new pods. I think it is important for commuters to stay out of their cars. My guess is that it has to be comfortable and private enough and I know that meta and google have these and I will probably be looking at those. Refurbishing is something we will do, but we are not that far yet. I am just thinking about things that allow students to recharge. There are lots of things out there and I want to be able to provide that.

9. Senator Finkelstein: I love the idea of the commuter lounge. I was wondering if during the renovation for Memorial we can add sensory spaces in areas since I know this was discussed last year.

a. Jess Eads: Yes, definitely. We also put one in public safety and there is one on the first floor on almost every floor. It is a quiet space where you won't have to leave your residence hall. It will have dim lights and a diffuser. Maybe we will have space in this building to do things once we move some things to Memorial Hall.

10. Chair Orellana: My committee has talked about prayer spaces of the lack thereof, I know one of the bathrooms was planning to be divided up into prayer space. Is there an update on this?

a. Jess Eads: That is my pet project with the vending machine issue. We specked it out and have a design for it. The plumbing is there and all we have to do is add a door. There are gendered praying rooms. It is expensive and hopefully by the end of the year we will have it.

11. Chair Iacobovici: On Ethicspoint, people have said how there have been issues on open dialogue and discourse in classrooms and fear of professors. Administration says they do a lot with Ethicspoint but often they are doing the bare minimum. I could name a lot of things over the past couple of weeks that I have heard that have not been followed up by Ethicspoint. What can administration do to alleviate concern for people and hold professors accountable?

a. Jess Eads: Thing number one is we are working with Cornell Craig and his team on more training for faculty. I can’t control people but when they are concrete examples and they come and tell me there is more opportunity to bring change. You are right about the anonymous part, but when there are multiple anonymous complaints about the same person that is helpful. When it feels like we are not doing anything, we are using it and it is helpful. It may not feel fair and just at all times, but it is not easy. Tenure gives faculty the opportunity to teach things that are hard. That ability to come into a space and challenge things that would protect society, tenure helps with that. It takes time to act on things especially when they are anonymous. The things that go into Ethics point are definitely looked at and while we can’t share the results those investigations are made all the time. Brittany is working on a visual representation that

shows when you put something into a Title IX complaint or ethics point, it will show you where it is going; what is the investigation process, the resolutions, outcomes, timeline and how many people are involved. This makes it a little more transparent. We can do little things like that to help. It is not a fast process but there is due process and it does get resolved. Bring it to me if there are problems.

12. Senator Mansour: I want to talk about an incident where a student passed out while taking a bar exam last summer. The exam still went on and comments were bashing Hofstra. Was there a statement released by the university other than P-Safe?

a. Jess Eads: Yes, and when the Bar results went out, our legal time wrote to them. We had nothing to do with this. We just rented the arena to the ABA. As soon as that emergency occurred, the hofstra team was there in seconds and we saved that person’s life but that was not the story. We wrote a legal letter to them and that’s why it did not go out. Be mindful of what you read and it is important to check facts.

13. Senator Pierre: In regards to student wages, I wanted to ask about opening the RSR booths 24/7 so people can get more work experience. Also, in terms of checking on the Pulse group chat, about the hurricane that hit the Caribbean lately, why was there a delayed response to that and why was there no mass communication sent? Are there any mass donation events taking place for hurricane victims?

a. Jess Eads: It was a mass communication problem with the person I told to do it. The day it happened, I thought if a message came from Brittany and Novia who were from Jamaica, it would resonate better. What instead happened was we wrote to students from Jamaica and the Caribbean. It was poorly handled in my office. We are shipping shirts to Jamaica as a donation. The message was supposed to talk about ways in which you could donate and so on. I thought the voice mattered, especially coming from two people who were impacted. I am not going to add hours to the RSR system but I am trying to find a new wage system to increase student wages. We are trying to decide what to cut to fund this. When we saw there was no activity in RSR, we decided to cut two hours. We created three

categories of wages. These are decisions we have to make to increase wages. Typically, it will make some people unhappy.

14. Senator Araba: Students in need can use the Pride Pantry. Could hours be extended for the service?

a. Jess Eads: There is an email about it. This is something we are working on. We finally got funding for a container farm. We are working with Brett Bennington. He and his students will be working on this project. It is a trailer and will be parallel to hempstead turnpike. This will allow us to grow fresh produce and vegetables and make an enormous amount of food. We are able to produce food all year round. We can give it to Compass so prices will be reduced and give it to the pride pantry so we have fresh produce. We will do announcements and whatever isn’t sold we will give it back to the community. The engineering and arts students could get involved.

15. Senator Chacon: Will Anita’s office be moved to memorial hall? With the renovations, would the bathrooms be included since the memorial hall bathrooms need an update?

a. Jess Eads: That’s what I am thinking. I think Anita is perfect because she is a resource, but also a GA from Anita’s office so students don’t feel they have a babysitter. That building is so old.

16. Chair Ahmad: Could we get bidets in the prayer rooms, or specifically by the bathrooms?

a. Jess Eads: In the prayer rooms, we will have absolutions.

17. Gallery Member Alex C: I am interested in being part of SGA. I am in ROTC, and while cadets have their own space, veterans do not. I have had the opportunity to be on a few different campuses, and the experiences I had was at Suffolk where there is an excellent veteran resource center. Coming off active duty and acclimating to normal life can be a challenge, and Suffolk had answers to all questions about educational benefits and such. On Veterans Day, I felt as if there was nothing on campus, and we should do more for them.

a. Jess Eads: This gives me a school for us to model, and allows us to see what we can do. We are always looking to do better and I don’t recall anything happening on Remembrance day. We can certainly do better. We don’t

have a larger veteran’s population than Suffolk, but we can definitely do something.

18. Senator Finkelstein: You mentioned the commuter lounge possibly getting a grad assistant there. Would you add an additional one or move the current? Anita has a lot of student aides, do you think they could be the one supervising?

a. Jess Eads: I would not add another additional person but I am really kind of spitballing ideas here. I just know we want an advanced lounge and I think we just need some service people. I am extending Overnight@Hofstra to faculty because they are travelling from far and I would love for them to stay to extend office hours, attend club events, etc. It has been a success so far and commuters have been staying a lot on weekdays. Part of how we are able to get rid of the faculty lounge is moving them into Weller. Now, that lower level of hofstra hall will become a faculty lounge.

19. Senator Araba: Thank you for the Overnight@Hofstra program, it has been great. Are you sure this will continue next semester? The towels have been small and sometimes there are no toiletries in case you forget.

a. Jess Eads: When you walked in, did you see your name on the bulletin board? Was there something in your room that had toiletries? What else would make that experience better? Use the pulse chat when you have a problem!

c. Chair Iacobovici moves for a 5-minute recess.

d. Special Elections

i. Senator Bokhari

1. Presentation

a. Senator Bokhari: My initiatives include improving the Hofstra Safe app, a Wellness Passport, National public health week events with programming and equity, a public safety scavengers hunt, and more. I am a member of the wellness committee, I have had multiple leadership roles on campus and I am a commuter so I relate to them.

1. Senator Rades: You said you had other leadership roles. What roles would pertain to

leadership in a similar style or wellness or safety in this role?

a. Senator Bokhari: I have been able to get things done in a specific way, I worked to get Eid be a national holiday for my school district in high school.

2. Senator Urban: How has working in other committees like appropriations prepared you for this role?

a. Seeing how the chairs work and how they run things helps me know how a committee would be run compared to how other chairs do it.

3. Chair Ahmad: Any things you plan on continuing that past wellness chairs have done?

a. I would like to continue Hofstra Hope Fest but would like to add new events to keep students interested.

4. Senator Black: For SHS, which organizations to collaborate with for National Public Health Week?

a. For these collabs, I would need the help of the committee. This semester we wanted to collaborate with HSA for a yoga event. I want to collaborate with clubs.

5. Secretary Danek: What would you do for Caffeine Awareness Week and how would the scavenger hunt work?

a. On the poles or parking lot, something for students to be aware of. For caffeine awareness, it would be before midterms week or times when this would be abused.

6. Chair Jacob: What is something you think you learnt as a member of SGA and in this committee?

a. I would hope to make resources helpful to students.

7. Senator Vira: What would you do differently with the bus-tracking app in helping it run?

a. I would work with public safety to make the app more accessible and make bus tracking more accurate.

8. Senator Finkelstein: I just wanted to add that Jovani said the bus tracking issue was on their end not our end.

ii. Senator Chauhan

1. Presentation

a. Senator Chauhan: My main initiatives are to increase outreach, collaborations with clubs, student engagement, and title ix awareness. Humans of Hofstra will be a social media initiative to highlight things such as one love which students can vote on. I also want to implement no screen nights, a title IX awareness week where we will partner with different student clubs. Interactive tabling ideas will include using the positivitree, building emergency bags and bracelet stations. I want to continue to have Hofstra hope fest, tabling at least once a month, and Rachel on the Run segments. I would be a good chair because I take initiatives, I love being involved, I am passionate and dedicated.

b. Chair Denson moves to extend speaking time by 2 minutes

i. Motion seconded

ii. Motion passed

c. I have talked to Rachel and I will go the extra mile and this is something I am passionate about.

i. Senator Smook: The Title IX awareness week is a good idea because we have violators walking around free on campus. How could you increase mental health awareness on campus?

1. All of our offices are legally bound, so everything I will do is going to increase outreach. I think that mental health awareness is important

ii. Senator Mansour: How would you make sure groups like commuters or international students are

interested in wanting to join and be involved in the community?

1. I am an international student so I understand. I think the important thing to do is to be in the student center and tabling. I will make sure everyone in my committee will do that and I will be open to what my committee has to offer.

iii. Senator Chacon: You did not talk enough about PSafe. What are your initiatives on this part of the committee?

1. I don’t completely see what I need to do there. This is why I want a tabling presence, to learn about student needs.

iii. Senator Ehrlich

1. Senator Ehrlich

a. Senator Ehrlich: I was a member of the committee last semester, ensuring the safety of students is crucial, many do not recognize mental health issues of students, and during my time in the committee I helped with different events and worked on some initiatives. I have been in SGA for the last two years and I always follow through with anything I do. There are several problems Hofstra students face on a daily basis, but they can be fixed. My initiatives include creating a space where students can have a safe space, bringing students to the health center, making events more interactive and working with the Title IX office. I will work with public safety to host CPR training, redevelop the Hofstra safe app.

b. Secretary Danek moves to extend speaking time by 2 minutes

i. Motion seconded

ii. Motion passed

c. I want to continue Rachel on the run with a new branding and promote the counseling service.

i. Senator Finkelstein: You mentioned student counseling workshops. Would you be willing to create group counseling services?

1. Senator Ehrlich: Yes, I would and within group counseling services I wanted a more

individualized experience for students. As a whole, however, I want students to feel a sense of community.

ii. Senator Smook: You mentioned spaces for minority students to be safe. Do you think this is segregating in a way? What would the benefits of this be?

1. Senator Ehrlich: I want to put on the record I am not trying to segregate anyone and anyone would be welcome. By minority, I mean minority groups often do not feel represented and this is a problem. There are offices for them, however in their own way they are sort of separated by identity, and I would like them to come together to create cultural connectivity.

iii. Senator Thani: You mentioned you were in positions in clubs. How would you have time to manage all those jobs and tasks with being a chair?

1. Senator Ehrlich: I do have a lot on my schedule right now. I feel that taking everything one day at a time and one step a time, I will see what takes precedent. I will make the time for it and put my all into it.

iv. Senator Black: You want more interactive events. What type of interactive event ideas that you could go into detail on?

1. Senator Ehrlich: Rather than having a presentation on drunk driving, I will make sure the interactive event with the simulator happens because it is very engaging. As for other programmes, I want to have other trainings.

v. Senator Vira: You were involved in the committee last semester, and how would you continue working with P-Safe and other offices and also listen to other students and address their concerns, particularly with mental health?

1. Senator Ehrlich: I sat down with the current chair and spoke to Giovanni. There was back and forth but I am still working on that.

I talked to him about the Mineola shuttles. I also worked on the not-so-curt behaviour of public safety officers. We have looked into training for these officers. I want to improve the counselling sessions. A lot of rules limit what can and can’t be done, that is why I want to introduce surveys about the counselling services so students could share what they liked and didn’t like.

iv. Senator Pierre

1. Presentation

a. Senator Pierre: I have been on programming and equity. Wellness is important to Student government. My proposed initiatives are mental and physical wellness and campus safety. I want to have events in the fitness center and promote intramural sports, create better relationships with public safety, affirmations etc. I want to do mental health “months”, remind students of resources like the wellness center and timely care and have self-love events like make your own journal. I want to remove the stigma of STI testing using the plan van and the clinic. I want to encourage student fitness, and remove the negative stigma of public safety. Chair Dzaveluri moves to extend speaking time by 2 minutes

i. Motion seconded

ii. Motion passed

b. I want to also improve shuttle services. Being the Wellness and Campus Safety chair will give me the opportunity to share my impact. I always have new ideas and I’m open to criticism.

i. Senator Rades: Given that you have not been in wellness, how do you feel you are knowledgeable about the specifics of the committee and know what events will have the best turnout of students?

1. Senator Pierre: I will use Rachel during this transitional period to learn how things work. I also have read the minutes.

v. Senator Ruffo

1. Presentation

a. Senator Ruffo: I am the current social chair which has allowed me to learn a few things like room bookings, and I have been a member of the wellness and committee since fall 2023, which allows me to be aware of what’s going on. My initiatives include combatting anxiousness such as by coloring with music, practicing tactics, and relaxing sensory experiences. I think smaller and simpler events throughout the semester would be great for this. Further student outreach would include soothing content such as ASMR on the SGA Instagram and collaboration with student health / counseling.

i. Senator Vira: Are you on the committee? What initiative would you have to work with public safety?

1. Yes. Something I have been thinking about is PSafe officers being in civilian clothing instead of a police outfit.

ii. Senator Rades: Given that you have been in the committee for so long, what current initiatives do you want to expand and develop further and what past initiatives would you like to continue?

1. Collaborating with HSA is something that I want to do next semester. Hofstra Hope Fest is also something that I want to continue.

vi. 10 minute moderated caucus

1. Chair Dzaveluri: In favor of Senators Pierre and Chauhan: I have class with Jean and he is open-minded and makes good judgments, and always ready to advocate for others. Aarushi did amazing and she really showed leadership skills that any chair should have, her presentation was so well-constructed and thoughtful.

2. Chair Iacobovici: In favor of Senator Chauhan: She always has an idea for something. She is not in programming and she was there and had ideas. She has asked me questions about what it is like to be a chair. That presentation was crazy and the passion she showed there will likely be shown if she was chair

3. Senator Ahmad: In favor of Ferheen, they were unique, especially with the passport idea. She wants to interact with the student population in new ways. Aaruushi is very passionate and have what is needed in a chair.

4. Senator Smook: In favor of Senators Ehrlich, Pierre and Chauhan: Aari is very passionate. She would bring a lot to the table. Jack is a great person and has nothing but a kind heart and wants to help the student body. Jean is very passionate about social causes and mental health awareness. He is also a good person and would be qualified.

5. Senator Mansour: Me and Jean met in SGA last spring and he is very welcoming and approachable and would be great for this role. Aarushi also would be a great choice and shows the passion needed for the role.

6. Senator Finklestein: In favor of Senator Ehrlich, he is one of the most passionate people when it comes to initiatives and also one of the most open minded. If something was brought to him he would do something to the best of his ability. He continues to work on things until they are done even when things are given backlash. He is able to push through.

7. Senator Vira: In favor of Senator Ehrlich, he was very welcoming to freshman like me. I got to know him on the DC trip and the initiatives he pushed and how some of the issues like the buses. He is a man of his word.

8. Senator Rades: Jack is very passionate about the things he does. He takes feedback well and is very responsive. He has really amazing ideas and has the motivation and skill to get things done. Aari was very passionate and you can tell she really cares about the role.

9. Senator Urban: I have worked with Ferheen in approps, and she prioritized health clubs during budget weekend. Her ideas are new and she would be a great fit.

10. Comptroller Skeldon: She has great initiatives having been here for one semester. Her ideas were unique and I think she has the ability to connect with the student body.

11. Senator Jacob: I know we saw all five and they are all so great, having worked with all five and they are so passionate and met with me multiple times.

12. Senator Gillani: Jack did a great job and his senator project presentation was great.

13. Secretary Danek: Jean is someone who is very passionate. He asked about positions before he started. He shows initiative. I have class with him and he always participates. He engages in senate, always making thought provoking questions. He is not afraid to take risks.

14. Chair Malhotra: Jack is in my committee and is always asking ways to get involved and attend meetings with me.

15. Senator Smook moves to extend the moderated caucus by 5 minutes.

a. Motion seconded

b. Motion passed

16. Chair Denson: Aari has always been an active member in my committee, and that would play into Rachel on the run. I think her initiatives are great.

17. Senator Malayeri: I think they were all great, but I would like to speak in favor of Sal. Being passionate is subjective and Sal is always talking about this committee to me outside of SGA. He is social chair and has been on this committee a long time and would know how to run it very well.

I. Icebreaker

A. What do you do to unwind after a hard day?

II. Facility Updates

A. Meeting with both Timothy Murray and Dom Lavin

1. Discussed the expansion of feminine hygiene products

a) There are currently 10 locations for the dispensers. Maintenance/service for one dispenser is $800 annually. Both Tim and Dom were open to the idea of having a dispenser in a bathroom near the laundry room of a residence hall. However, there is a one-time installation fee that needs to be paid, and they need to request more money from the university for such an expense. Dom will provide me with the estimate when he has that conversation with finance.

(1) SGA Funds?

2. Modernizing academic buildings (Davidson, Barnard, and more) to include outlets/charging stations.

a) This idea will be proposed in the capital spending plan, but we will not see it for another year or two as renovations are currently being done following a list of priorities.

b) Dom will forward me the projects approved for spending later this week.

3. Tissue dispensers for students

a) Tim and Dom are interested in piloting this by potentially adding a dispenser on the 10th floor of Axin. They will review vendors and get back to me on this.

4. Veterans Lounge

a) With Memorial Hall scheduled for renovation this summer, the Advising Department will be temporarily relocated to the Library, leaving the second floor vacant. This presents an excellent opportunity to create an open and accessible space for veterans and other students. Additionally, there is available space on the east side of Memorial’s lower level that could also be utilized. Dom suggested sharing this proposal with Jess Eads, who is overseeing the project.

5. Plaza Rooms will be renovated with new flooring, lighting, windows, and audiovisual equipment.

III. Upcoming Meetings

A. Dom Lavin will be introducing me to the Director who oversees the sustainability efforts for the university. I will hear from him soon on this.
