109 C.V. Starr Hall, South Campus Russell L. Burke, PhD, Professor and Chair, Department of Biology, Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Biology has more undergraduates than any other department, primarily because of all the students interested in pre-health fields. Pre-med majors are traditionally interested in skin-in topics, such as anatomy, genetics, and cell biology. But these valuable topics are only part of what biology has to offer the health professions.

4Who Thought Engineering Could Be Hilarious?

The Helene Fortunoff Theater, 142 Monroe Lecture Center, South Campus Mauro J. Caputi, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, Director of Freshman Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Science Can a love of TV and movies be combined with an outgoing and humorous personality to produce a Freshman Engineering Design class that is entertaining as well as educational? That’s just what happened when Dr. Caputi decided to conduct his ENGG 15 lecture class as if it were a live TV show. He facilitates the course in an engaging and humorous style to allow the students to have a great deal of fun while actively learning and experiencing the three main areas of study: the informed design process, teamwork, and communication. Why not see for yourself how Dr. Caputi is developing innovative ways to make engineering classes accessible and fun for all.

4The ABC’s of Good Communication: How to Get Your Points Across and Make the Grade

Zarb School of Business Dr. Karagozoglu illustrates, using Bloomberg terminals in the Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room, and discusses the inner workings of modern financial markets and trading. Electronic trading has transformed the capital markets, giving rise to algorithmic trading, direct market access and high-frequency trading. For better or for worse, it has been a natural evolution, and Dr. Karagozoglu will present an overview of this evolution, demystifying new financial vocabulary such as “flash,” “dark pool,” “HFT,” and “maker-taker.”

4Are We Alone? The Search for Earth-Like Planets and Extraterrestrial Life

114 Berliner Hall, South Campus Stephen S. Lawrence, Professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Is Earth unique? Are we the only planet that supports life? Only in the last 20 years have astronomers been able to make any meaningful progress in answering these profound questions. As of August 2014, astronomers have confirmed nearly 1,800 “exoplanets” orbiting other stars, many in multiple-planet solar systems similar to our own. Over 150 of these planets orbit within the “habitable zone” of their parent star – at the right distance to allow for liquid water on their surface. In this model class, Professor Lawrence reviews the astronomical techniques used to find these planets, and the future research that will allow us to determine if any of these planets are truly habitable and possibly even inhabited.

4The Amazing Race: The Road to Academic Success

309 C.V. Starr Hall, South Campus Holly J. Seirup, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Counseling and Mental Health Professions, School of Health Sciences and Human Services Congratulations! This presentation explores the impact of hope on academic success, as well as highlighting tips and tools to navigate the college experience.

4Abraham Lincoln Versus the Common Core

208 C.V. Starr Hall, South Campus Alan Singer, Director, Secondary Education Social Studies Department of Teacher Education Programs, School of Education What did Abraham Lincoln say about slavery and race?
