1. Senator Pierre: The elevators are outdated. How did you advocate for them?

a. Director Sullivan: Most elevators are old. They are not updated as are many things. There are often breakdowns and there is usually a quick turn around. There is the president’s committee, where every year there are visible access updates. We get to put forth each year how we plan to use that money. There are higher traffic areas with more problems. My department gets notified and then I can pull a list of those taking classes in that building and I can work with the registrar to move classes as needed.

2. Senator Ehrlich: Many accommodations travel over from middle school and high school. Accommodations are not always going to be in place in the professional field. What has SAS done to lean students away from these accommodations post-graduation?

a. Director Sullivan: Accommodations will not necessarily transfer from high school or middle school. The laws change. Under the

higher school level we use ADA, so students have to reapply. Students have to be able to articulate what the issue is and I can guide them. This reapplication happens in grad school too unless it's at Hofstra. We are replacing old school applications with new technology that can prepare students for the work force. The key there is assistive technology including speech to text, text to speech and we think that is preparing students.

3. Chair Dzaveluri: Does SAS ever have to intervene with a case where accommodations may be denied? Are there any departments that are harder to work with than others?

a. Director Sullivan: A student may not be approved if there is no support for it. It has happened if they are not met. The best thing they can do is notify me so I can look at the situation and address it in real time. We require that we are involved in emails for testing accommodations etc. It often comes from a lack of education of what their part is meant to be. I notice no trend. I only notice the difference between adjunct and long-tenured professors. If professors have different universities and different policies in each university, that can make things complicated. There is no department that’s harder to work with or less accessible.

4. Senator Mansour: How do students with disabilities get around on campus in bad weather and how do you make sure they get around easily?

a. Director Sullivan: That is for all students. Students can always call public safety if they need a lift from one location to another. Our leadership makes sure that we are traveling from one palace to another safely under harsh weather. I am also in close contact with facilities when there is bad weather, even for situations when there are leaf cuts in the summer. When you as a student see something, call me or someone in facilities or psafe as we can’t all see everything. Dream is our student national organization where we have students with disabilities and allies. We need better curbs and cross walks so students don’t have to walk through the parking lot.

5. Senator Smook: As a user of SAS, when I take tests I select the testing room request for a distraction-reduced environment and I am often placed in the normal room. For students who need reduced-stress environments, how do you make sure they are free of distractions? Is there any way students can take tests in rooms by themselves and with just one proctor?

a. Director Sullivan: our testing center is the distraction reducing environment on campus, but a distraction-free zone is not possible. There are those two 1-on-1 rooms. We also have noise cancelling headphones for sound, and inserts for both outside and inside your

ears. The short answer is no. We administer nearly 5000 facultyproctored exams per year. We don’t have 5000 individual spaces and we understand these are not all in one day. We have noisecancelling, dimmers and other facilities for accommodations. Students also have extra time. I do wish I had a campus with 40 individual rooms with cameras but that’s not possible.

6. Chair Malhotra: Regarding SAS policies on ESAs, the issue we have talked about is the approval of ESAs. They have been neglected in dorm rooms. The ESA policies have not protected animals due to lack of enforcement. There is a German shepherd living in a 12x14 dorm, how do we know the animal is being taken care of. We just want to understand the policies and know if living standards for animals are being measured.

a. Director Sullivan: A service animal does not need to be requested as an accommodation. They are trained for a disability and will be with the person everywhere they go, such as a seeing-eye dog. They are trained to physically help an individual. We can ask them what their disability is, and what they are trained to do. In many instances this is a dog or a pony, even though I have never seen a pony. These dogs have a yellow vest. I can manage it from there if an animal is not meant to be there. Just email me. An ESA animal is not trained, and is not needed for a student to navigate. It does need to be requested and it has to be on file that there is a disability that this animal is needed for. There are sizing qualifications here. There is a crate minimum that all ESA’s must follow and I require a document from the vet. As far as monitoring the animal goes, that is an invasion of privacy. I have no right to follow up coldly on students as that is against law. However, any concern should be flagged by residence life, such as smells, or not seeing the dog, or dog hair in the dryer etc. That then needs to be reported just how every other conduct issue would be reported. These go through me and are also filed. Technically, one violation and the university can remove the animal. For less severe things, we would follow up with you. It is important that if there are concerns, it has got to get to the right people like an RA or RD and I will deal with it within 2 hours.

7. Senator Ehrlich: A lot of the time faculty members may not understand or cooperate with students. Many of them have been here a long time and have a stagnant mindset and do not change it. Even though it is a requirement, how far does it go? Are there trainings put in place to give them more understanding on how the process is and why accommodations exist?

a. Director Sullivan: It can be very frustrating. Yes there is training. There will always be old faculty on campus. We have a higher rate of students with disabilities on campus so the process is changing. I try to hit many departments every year to do training, and some of the information is the same but some is different. Processes tend to stay the same and are easy to follow. Just send me an email so I can address it and have a special training. For example, if there is a specific department.

8. Senator Subramanian: I have used SAS before and I would do voice-totext. It was difficult with a chemistry class and there was a staff member to watch. However, they were confused on how the voice-to-text worked. I ended up writing with my other hand for the finals that year as it was too difficult. For subjects where voice-to-text is difficult, how can the staff member help out? They put me in a room with someone who was supposed to watch me, not scribe, but the professor ended up handing me off to SAS.

a. Director Sullivan: Speech to text when it comes to math, chem, bio etc. can be complicated. The rapid change in AI has created more platforms that do a better job and we are consistently monitoring this. I recommend a human scribe for these situations, especially one that has an understanding for that field of study. If the injury is temporary, that also affects the process. Students should use the faculty of that department to come up with a creative solution, such as taking the exam in an oral way. With any disability, it is the students responsibility to advocate for what they need but also to understand what is on that test. With over 5000 exams, every situation is unique. In that situation, just speak up at least then if not prior. We can stop the test, reconvene with faculty, and come up with a plan from there. We would plan ahead for things such as math tests.

9. Senator Pierre: How do you promote the evaluations to get the SAS accommodations. I know the evaluations are hard, how do you try to best go about it?

a. Director Sullivan: Most students coming into college have received accommodations in the K through 12 arena. I do training, partnerships and communications. I ensure students are evaluated at least in junior year if not senior year so students’ documents are updated. Exam boards are not lenient with evaluations. Not every student with a disability has received accommodation including international students. Some countries don’t regard disabilities like the United States. We work with our campus partners to work with

evaluations. There is a misconception that these can be costly. Things like ADHD, mental disabilities etc. can have documentation provided by a different licensed professional. I work with our partners with student health and our own partners on campus can do the evaluation. We have a robust infrastructure that helps. If a student has outdated information, I can put provisional accommodations in place which are different from temporary accommodations.

10. VP Young: You mentioned SAS benefits from student input. What is something you want more feedback on that we could help you with right now?

a. Director Sullivan: When I came back to Hofstra two years ago, there was a huge upset with the ESA process. Why is it a 12 page application process for this? We cleaned that up after SGA came to my door. I feel confident that there will always be modifications to procedures but for the most part we have everything up to date. It never used to be but it's there now so everyone can know what I know. I was working with some food allergy stuff. Really understanding your rights and responsibilities as students with a leadership role on campus, putting in place your voice so we can enforce these policies so we can have a safe and accessible campus. Be my partner, be my friend. I hope to have or gain your trust. I am open to changing any and everything. Help me implement the changes. I need your eyes and ears out there. The project that seems small but is actually mighty is adding a sticker on door openers. We wouldn’t have been able to do that without SGA’s partnership. You can email, text or knock on my door.

11. Senator Mansour: For students who have health issues on a recurring basis, do they need doctor’s notes? It can result in absences, which lowers grades.

a. Director Sullivan: A period is not a normal thing. It is something that students face multiple times a year. If it is not healthy, it would fall under a basic medical problem. If it rises to the level that is a barrier or disabling, you can be evaluated at our student health service. You can get an evaluation and they can provide you with documentation. In order to implement an ADA system based on a disability, it needs to be documented. Something like that can certainly qualify.

12. Senator Subramanian: When I had my situation, the way my professors worked around the situation was rigid. SAS told me what I was allowed to request. You had a professor then do the oral examination with you. I

would suggest more clear advertisement of a student’s rights in that scenario. There is usually a very small time window in which you can take your next exam.

a. Director Sullivan: Temporary accommodations are unique. Things are very different in our department now compared to 2 years ago. I have a 1-on-1 with the student to understand the barriers and what the student needs. I review these immediately. Students don’t have time in advance to sign up for their test etc. so I review those and I talk to the student. I ask them about their field of study. Some are much easier to accommodate especially with that speech to text technology or extended time. It is on an individualized basis. I can add information to the web explaining this so it is out there.

13. Chair Malhotra: Is there any way to get the disability policy published on a syllabus where the language can be clear?

a. Director Sullivan: It makes me angry that the disability statement is only on some syllabi. It should be on every one. It should provide information to students so they know who to contact. There is a mandatory online orientation if you get approved for your accommodation. You can ask your professor if you don’t see the page on the syllabus.

14. Chair Dzavleuri: I have been working with the Provost's office on a simple syllabus. Several faculty members have been using it campus-wide. Are you aware of the changes that are happening?

a. Director Sullivan: Not yet but I do have a meeting with them. I update this statement so as long as they are including his information, my information is there as well.

15. Senator Mansour: How can we make sure that students do not shy away from being involved on campus? Many of them shy away from it or it may be hard for some.

a. Director Sullivan: It’s a stigma. I really charge everyone in this room to move away from this stigma. Students have this opportunity to make friends. Leaders should try to motivate and include students. My office is in Roosevelt Hall. Call, email, come see me any time.

1. Senator Vira: I am adding a requirement that clubs that want to change their constitution, must do so before the 6th operational week of SGA. An exception would be if the proposed amendments are necessary to bring the constitution in alliance with SGA’s policies.

2. Senator Urban: My concern with new clubs or new e-boards is how to get the info to them and that it needs to be done as soon as the semester starts?

a. Senator Vira: Email the club regarding the policy change and advisors can let their clubs know about the policy series change.

3. Chair Dzavleuri: We are changing policy series and constitution all the time, is it fair for clubs to not be able to do this after the 6th operational week?

a. Senator Vira: The language change I am going to make kind of helps with this. The change would be with elections, specifically changing the constitution before the e-board is implemented.

4. Senator Subramanian: If the club members decide something, would it go into effect that semester or would it be delayed?

a. Senator Vira: Maybe after the language change your thoughts will change, but it is linked to elections.

5. Secretary Danek: If a club is newly established or SGA recognized on the 7th week of operation, can they make any changes to their club constitution, or will that fall under the exception?

a. Senator Vira: I would propose language for that.

6. Senator Vira proposes language to subsection B: “Any amendments regarding elections to a club or organization’s constitution submitted after the 8th operational week of the student government association, shall not take effect until the beginning of the subsequent semester. An exception to this provision shall only be permitted if the proposed amendments are necessary to bring the organization’s constitution into compliance with the Student Government Association Constitution, Policy Series, does not have a Constitution on file, or otherwise at the discretion of the Club Resources Chair.”

8. Chair Iacobovici: I completely agree with the language change for this senatorial action to be put into policy. However, I am concerned that many of these things are being done close to elections and SGA is not holding itself to these same standards. We need to hold ourselves to these same standards.

9. Chair Dzaveluri: I agree with the previous speaker’s points. It makes us look superior to other clubs. We shouldn’t have more rights than others. Being able to change the constitution on the last senate of the semester, other clubs shouldn’t be banned from doing the same thing.

10. Comptroller Skeldon: It is important to emphasize that clubs need flexibility just like we do. Clubs do have constitutions on file, so this language change would not make sense.

11. Senator Subramanian: I challenge I would have with this, especially for new clubs, the e-board is their entire club. Making changes to make the club more amenable for the future semester, should be to their discretion. There is no need to make this change if it doesn’t affect SGA.

12. Senator Vira: I would not be opposed to making another language change that states new clubs need the whole semester. This is focused on elections, not the whole club’s constitution. Oftentimes, clubs do not follow the correct procedures. We should not allow clubs to change things at the very last minute.

13. Senator Urban: I do understand those concerns however, that is the job of the club resources chair. The whole point is that they amend the constitution and this then gets approved. Anything wrong would be flagged. Implementing this policy would do more harm than food.

14. Senator Subramanian: I think there is a good intention behind making it less complicated, but we should not prevent club members from doing something. It is a living, breathing document. It might just make it more difficult as you want the Constitution to represent the students in the organization.

VP campaigning opened. We reserved a room for special elections in Breslin 105 from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. Eligibility will be reported by tomorrow as soon as Sev sends it. Campaigning opens on Monday. The President / Vice President debate is on Monday during common hour. Candidate bios are due on the 22nd. Follow the rules in the reminders.

Still waiting final approval from Psafe, not SGA/Hofstrafunded, concurrent protest being planned, FPS 12 guarantees right to free speech for autonomous student organizations, SGA has a duty to protect the free speech of both the student organization and the student organization protesting it, talking to admin on how SGA can best mitigate feelings of danger, possibility of walk-in counseling around time of the event, there will be a heightened Psafe presence, current thinking is to author a statement explaining the situation and how it will be planned by an organization and not endorsed but rather

allowed under free speech policies and that no student money has been put towards this,

i. Senator Araba: Do you know if bringing outside police force is a consideration at this time?

1. President Quail: Hofstra is currently planning to avoid having to do this

ii. Senator Smook: Is this statement going to be critical or supportive of it or just neutral?

1. President Quail: It will be supportive of free speech according to university policy for both the right of the organizations to have the event and for organizations to have counter-protests, will highlight importance of student safety

iii. Senator Subramanian: If it is already known by both SGA and admin that this is so polarizing that counter-protests will be happening and that counseling resources will be advertised, when does this overtake the right to free speech? In terms of differentiating between the university and SGA, putting them in the same basket as SGA is not a good precedent to set as it should not be in coordination with administration’s role but rather the concerns of the student population.

1. President Quail: This gets to the much larger goal of dialogue and free speech. Free speech can be an all-or-nothing case. It can often be immoral or disturbing. We will discuss more openly in Good of the Order. The citations would be different if it wasn’t a student organization organizing this. They fall under this category as they went through the correct processes. Public safety has done their due diligence in vetting them. I understand that this speaker is unlike many other speakers. Your right to be opposed to this is similarly protected and I do encourage your advocacy however you feel to be channelled through other means be it dialogue, counter protesting etc.

iv. Senator Mansour: I had many meetings about this today and I have not received an answer regarding the 1155 students who signed the petition against this. I recognize the right to freedom of speech, but what are we doing to recognize these student voices?

1. President Quail: Absolutely. What our duty is to protect free speech rights, and what that means painfully is that the wishes of the many do not override the rights of the few. That feeling of advocacy does have a space on campus but it isn’t the purview of SGA to cancel at an event.

3. Chair Dzaveluri: I want a moderated caucus as these conversations can get very heated. I want to address my viewpoints to the whole senate. 1155 students signed this petition. Each senator represents

150 of the student population. ⅙ of students are bothered by IDF soldiers coming on campus. It is more than enough to not let them in on our campus. We are letting war criminals on campus for freedom of speech. Big difference between freedom of speech and war crimes. Where was free speech when SVP wanted demonstrations? Why did we restrict demonstrations when there were peaceful demonstrations? This is an even bigger threat, we are a big campus. People who support Palestine will feel unsafe and this will feed into violence. We are talking about free speech, but would they let other forces in?

4. Chair Iacobovici: I just want to echo the statements of the previous speaker. Freedom of speech. There are hate crime laws and hate speech laws, Whether this freedom of speech thing is contentious. However, safety may suffer and will suffer. I am a Jewish person of colour. I would not feel safe with having these IDF persons on campus. The group that is coming has been condemned for many crimes in huge countries by different international organizations. Their prime minister is not even allowed in many countries. For my understanding, the blame is being put onto SGA, not administration. The fact is that we are not administration and have the ability to speak against administration. By not listening to thousands of student concerns due to their international stance or their parents, it’s a disrespect to them and our student leaders.

5. Senator Smook: Pro-Israel students exist on campus too and we cannot only support students who support Palestine. Most people are not educated about this situation. These soldiers are not armed in uniform. Every Israeli Jew is required to serve in the IDF. Hamas is not on the same level of the IDF. The IDF is a legitimate army of a legitimate country. There are pro-Israel students on this university, the signatories are a small minority and most people do not comment on Fizz.

6. Senator Mansour: We are in SGA to listen to the student body. I had a lot of meetings today with Sharmeen, Jessica Eads, Dean Christy, Sev and I wanted to hear everyone’s opinions. I grew up in Palestine for 14 years. I would not have been in this room right now if it wasn’t for the IDF. SSI has free speech like any other organization, but you can’t compare a speaker to a criminal organization like the IDF. This is an open campus and we don’t know what else can happen.

7. Senator Pierre: It was stated that it is only ⅙ of students signed this petition, this does not count the current students. Less than that voted in SGA elections last year. More people signed this than voted in SGA elections. We are not understanding the ramifications of this. The Senate election is close and the next senate and cabinet will take the brunt of this regardless of whatever

stems from this. We will get pressured in the next town hall. This petition serves as a reminder of the student body.

8. Senator Ehrlich: This is an issue that has not only been controversial but has gained a lot of attention. Many people are very against this. This isn’t about israel vs palestine, jewish vs muslim, democrat vs republican etc. This is an issue that we should pay attention to. I don’t care if you don’t agree with me.

9. Senator Subramanian: This event has only been public for the last four days. We have gotten so many voices on this than the students voting in SGA elections. Last year the policy with protesting was so outdated it had to be rewritten when it was happening. To clarify, it is obvious genocide has been committed in Gaza. These are members of the IDF, not Israeli speakers. We are talking about student safety and the answer is unbelievable.

10. Secretary Danek: I feel like Hofstra’s free speech policy isn’t consistent with what has happened over years. Students can only protest in front of hofstra hall or must go through other processes. SVP were very unfairly treated a few years ago. When they were doing their protest, they were being monitored. SVP has not been treated fairly when compared to other organizations. We should consider that over 1000 students have signed this petition. As previous speakers have said, while we should always maintain a respectful tone with administration, we should recognize that we can have a different stance and don’t have to move in line with them. In this situation it is important to do that while also maintaining civility and respect.

12. Chair Peri: There is nothing we can do about the free speech issue. It is time to start advocating differently. On this campus they are many students of color on this campus who feel very unsafe with 2 IDF soldiers coming on campus. The fact that this might call for a bigger police force is concerning and people do not feel protected by this. It is a necessity that we talk to public safety about this and that this gets solved. Administration has not addressed this event and the subject of student safety which is the most important part of any university

13. Senator Araba: I think that the event will take place and there will be a counter protest and we need to ensure the safety of both groups of students. I refuse to make a generalization about the soldiers without knowing. I was not here when SVP had issues with the speakers but there is a difference with a terrorist organization and I am surprised we call them freedom fighters.

14. Comptroller Skeldon: Free speech is an all-or-nothing issue. This could create a precedent to cancel for future events. We can ensure

everyone is being held to the same standards in respect to the campus demonstration policy. Even when the rhetoric is something we disagree with, we must recognize organizations’ rights to be for and against the event while heightening resources like counseling. They did submit a budget for this event and it was denied by SGA. Even when we disagree, we must protect the rights of organizations.

15. Senator Mansour: When SVP wants to hold protests on campus, it is not an easy process. If the university is so big on free speech, why do they put limits on us? I understand that this makes some people uncomfortable but this is free speech not hate speech. Hofstra did not fund the event or anything but they are allowing those people on campus. I am sure they have the power to do something and listen to the students. We pay money to feel safe here. Why should we go to counseling when we can just make the issue disappear? I know many students feel like they have not been heard. This is not a good event and it makes most students feel unsafe and uncomfortable.

16. Senator Urban: I am all for free speech and having guest speakers, but this is different. The fact that students are not going to class shows the disparity between other guest speakers and this. This is a representation of us. Students’ reactions are a representation of us and this will affect international enrollment. We need international students for tuition. I have concerns regarding a counter-protest. What will Psafe do with that or not support it at all? Will there be more officers at the protest than the event itself? It shows a very big disconnect between the admin and us. We represent students, not the admin. When students sign the petition saying they do not want this event, we must listen to that.

17. Chair Dzaveluri: According to the previous speaker’s point that Palestine is not a state, Palestine was a state long before two-state solution was a thing. ⅙ of the student population is 1155 undergraduate students who are real people who are scared of their lives. International students are already targeted and imagine how they feel when they have to share their zip code. This is not only about students. Faculty is part of the targeted groups. They are scared of the violence of IDF groups coming to campus. We are offering counseling for many of the guest speakers. We are laughing at these people’s faces. Imagine your families are getting bombed in Palestine and your university is letting the organization bring IDF officers to campus. Yes we should provide resources but not letting this happen and offering these resources. We are giving the platform to the wrong people.

18. Chair Iacobovici: I would like to clarify that all Israeli citizens have to serve in the IDF. However, not all Israelis support it. These people are in the IDF past their mandatory service date. Rabbi

David and Adiba agreed if it was Israelis it would be fine. However, they are talking about their time serving in the IDF. Increased P-Safe presence creates an unsafe environment for people who already feel targeted by P-Safe. I would like to point out that I am afraid of antisemitism towards me. This shows something as many Jewish students like me are against this event and genocide. This is a safety aspect and increased police does not increase a sense of safety. Jewish students will feel more targeted after this as people will believe Israel and the IDF represents Jewish people. We should make sure SGA shows it is against it or this event does not happen. Jewish students should not be targeted on campus and by being neutral we are letting this conversation keep on going.

20. Senator Subramanian: Hofstra for a lot of people is their home and they don’t have the ability to leave campus. They may not feel safe and why are we allowing this. A few weeks ago at Vassar University, a speaker came in who helped create the Patriot Act which unfairly targeted minority communities, and the event was very unpopular. The students booted him off the campus. There are already counterprotests being hosted. If we know this event makes it unsafe, why let it go ahead, if we know what’s going to happen now. We can put forward an opinionated piece. In this room, there is clearly a majority putting forward a safety concern.

21. Comptroller Skeldon: University policy does protect students and these events from being cancelled. We promise organizations the right to bring speakers to campus and we do not have the right to take this away. Safety concerns are scary, but P-Safe will be there and E-Board and Cabinet will monitor to make sure this will be safe. People do have the right to oppose the event and the counterprotest is being approved. The right to oppose the event is not the right to cancel the event. We need to ensure all student organizations are being treated fairly and should revisit the campus demonstration policy to ensure this.

22. Senator Vira: There are a lot of points and concerns that the school community has. The statement should reflect the safety concern, free speech, and SVP’s right to be protected. A lot of us pay a lot of money to come here and we shouldn’t be scared to come to school that day.

23. Chair Orellana: I want to reiterate that the issue at hand has been prevalent in Queens throughout my life growing up. I take this issue very seriously. I unfortunately have to reiterate that there is a policy that protects this event from happening. We can talk about

how much we do not like it. Student voices should be amplified and should be treated fairly. University has taken heightened precautions for P-Safe and admin. This event is not open to anyone outside of the Hofstra community. I want to reiterate that cancelling programming should not be taken lightly. I can also say that about the events that I have been on. I do not want to be put on attack as someone who hosted events. I urge everyone to continue amplifying your voice and looking at the campus demonstration policy. This is what we can bring to the admin and have future discussions. They see how this affects their sense of belonging. When I have had conversations with admin about conflicts such as these, I know many do not feel that the university advocates for them and that the government is not advocating for these students. The university has had to dial equity and inclusion efforts down. We should continue amplifying everything you are saying in this room.

24. Senator Gillani: I am half Iranian, so I have to say. I can’t contact my family over there. Apartheid, isn’t something you should say. They even passed a death penalty law allowing the execution of Palestinians. Denying it doesn’t help your case. Who are you to say what is terrorism is? I don’t suck up to nation-states.

25. Senator Smook: It is not genocide, the people getting genocided do not have a say and Hamas does have a say. This is not a genocide, this is an unfortunately run PR campaign. I sympathize with SVP and their right to protest. It goes for all sides and the right to protest is something beautiful. This whole conflict is very personal for me as I have multiple family members in Israel. I think people are overreacting as this is not a threat. People see this as black and white. Antisemitism is so deeply ridden within our society. I do not think most pro-Palestine protestors are antisemitic, but saying the IDF kills babies is a blood libel.

28. Chair Denson: It would be a miss to not make a statement on this. This act of free speech is already on session and we cannot take down the event as these are not compliant with university policies. Students should advocate for what they believe in. I hear all perspectives in this room and I think it is important because we have to take this sort of approach so that we can do as much as we can. The right to protest on campus is critical.

29. Senator Pierre: There are about 20 of us. It is 10 pm on Thursday. This is an important matter. Where is the faculty? Why are they

not here to discuss this matter? Why isn’t that we can’t write a letter saying we can or can’t do this. I find that heartbreaking and I don’t like that. People who hold power are not on campus right now. We should not be here by ourselves to discuss this matter. Why can’t we advocate for the people who go on the portal to vote for us? President Poser made a statement saying she would be willing to follow the rules at any cost.

30. Senator Mansour: I cannot comprehend how a person who has everything they need it is because of the IDF. It is a genocide and beyond me that we are having this conversation. We are drifting away from the point as people are uneducated on this matter. This is such a hard topic for me to talk about as my family grew up under occupation. I know many people whose parents got arrested by the IDF and are held hostage. It is so insensitive that the IDF is being brought to campus when they are bombing Lebanon and Iran. We are minimizing the suffering of these people.

31. Senator Araba: This is a very necessary conversation that we need to happen and our goal is to be here and hear what everyone has to say. Beyond this event there needs to be a larger conversation about freedom of speech. We can still be respectful and apologize to the people who have different backgrounds. We are representing other students and we have to say we condemn this . I said this because I do not want anything bad to happen and I want P-Safe to be there. We do not know what is going to happen.

32. Chair Peri: It is our job as SGA to protect the rights of student organizations, but it is also disgusting that they think this is an acceptable event. If we want to fight against it we should talk to admin and make clear what we want to do going forward. We cannot cancel events we do not like. We have to make sure that our students are safe and will be safe and that their right is protected, the location is unannounced and this limits the opportunities and timeline to have a counter-protest. The first thing we should really be advocating for is more transparency on this event.

33. Senator Subramanian: I would echo that. Transparency is important. It is keeping everyone in the dark. We have had a situation in the last two years where the policy was not what it should have been. Public safety has been a deterrent to students of colour. When we bind ourselves to working with a policy that we know doesn’t work. We have the information and know the policy isn't the best thing to follow. Neutrality kills.

34. Senator Ruffo: I think the right thing to do for SGA is to put out a statement acknowledging the importance of the freedom of speech while condemning the people coming to campus. I have done a lot of thinking and what Israel is unleashing is evil. There has to be morality somewhere and what is going on is terror. Freedom of

speech is an American value while also saying the people coming here are evil

35. Chair Orellana: We are a student government. We represent everyone in the student body. I feel like we all have our side about this conflict and it is important for SGA to recognize that students have this autonomy. I am trying to keep all clubs from being a target. There are some things people don’t agree on but it comes down to the point where we have to protect each other’s freedom of speech. There are people who are not in agreement.

36. Comptroller Skeldon: We need to emphasize that most people think what is happening in the Middle East is horrible or immoral. However, we need to protect all our constituents and free speech is essential to the function of the university. A large opinion does not outweigh the rights of the full. Sev and Sharemeen are available at 2pm tomorrow.

37. Chair Iacobovici: I would like to reiterate another seeker’s voice. It is clear that the administration is throwing us under the bus. Neutrality kills. We will receive more backlash if we publish a neutral statement. I personally don’t feel safe with these people coming here. I would like to offer a solution. This SGA is a democratically run organization. We take this time to hear everyone’s opinion and voice. We should release the statement, vote on the statement and reflect a majority vote. Not everyone needs to sign it.

38. Senator Smook: Speakers are acting as if we should release a statement condemning it but there are probably others in SGA who support Israel. The location is not going to be released due to backlashed. Comparing IDF to Nazis is highly inappropriate. 1200 Jews were killed on October 7th. The whole antisemitism started this whole conflict. People were not dying on this before that. Therre were no anti-ICE protests on campus and all the stuff Trump is doing should be protested. The Gaza situation does not directly involve the US. We should focus on ICE agents killing Americans. I hate Netanyahu and I am not a blind Israel supporter. It makes mistakes like every country and I would like to see a 2 state solution without Hamas. I do not get the whole police threatening situation as they are good people and here to protect us.

39. Secretary Danek: I feel like we can take a very pro-active stance on this. I think we should advocate for improvements in the policy, and make sure that we use this to channel our advocacy for future senates. While the event is going to happen, we need to recognize the right of organizations to counter protest. Admin has been lacking in coordinating with us and we should have more fleshed out the demonstration process. This has been an 80 year war between Israel and Palestine. It is a horrible situation and it is important to recognize that. It is a chance to advocate for students.

41. Comptroller Skeldon: Most of us agree that is horrible but we can’t urge our promise to have an organization cancel an event. We give every organization the right to have programming and host an event. We as SGA can’t issue this but we as individuals can.

42. Senator Gillani: I should not have to abide by things I believe are immoral. It is a genocide in Gaza, you can look at the data. This has been a conflict going on since 1890.

43. Chair Dzaveluri: It is never okay to mock other peoples’ struggles just because you cannot see them. I am not talking about just Palestinian people but also the rights of minorities. We are going into circles right now and the political spectrum exists and people can have different opinions. Our E-Board is the face of SGA and all the fizz posts go to them. We can work as a team and ensure further steps are taken. We should all be taking the punch together. We should condemn bringing IDF war criminals on campus while emphasizing free speech, but this is quite different from free speech.

44. Senator Subramanian: Sal made a good proposal earlier to have a statement that emphasizes the right to free speech, what administration has put into place and also condemning the event. Some senators feel strongly about this. I disagree with the notion that every senator should sign onto this because it may not reflect the opinions of all of us. I know we care about procedural niceties but to reiterate a previous speaker’s point, to pretend or invalidate a minority is ignorant and sets a precedent. We can make whatever potential arguments we want and have facts. We can potentially do what Sal was saying and have a two-part statement or I would be open to having a statement where other senators could sign on to.

45. Senator Pierre: To say there has not been any altercations between P-Safe and students, any black advocacy group would contest this. There have been altercations and instances. There were no ICE protests as there were not ICE agents on campus. Free speech does protect the people who need it the most, even to the right about student safety which does refute that. Where is the faculty? We are almost at 11pm and I have not seen any members of admin. Many of us cannot make it on a Friday. To sit there and be okay with the fact that there is no one here but us, that is where I have qualms. We should be taking the punches together, but admin should be taking more punches. We are blamed on Fizz. how would you feel if you were posted on Fizz everyday? I wouldn’t want to be on campus right now. The fact no admin is here is disrespectful to the student body. We are still here and I have not seen everyone’s face

46. Senator Araba: Despite our disagreement, I appreciate our discussion. This is what I expected when I joined SGA. It is a good democratic moment we are leading. We stay respectful and we can disagree but you don’t have to use a voice. We should be united as a senate. It would be bad if some senators sign and others don’t. We were elected as a whole and it sends a bad message to the community. We need everyone to represent everyone.

47. Comptroller Skeldon: In terms of a statement, we ultimately need to recognize them as a student organization and their right to hold the event. Even if we do not agree with it.

48. Chair Orellana: When we approve these clubs we recognize the right to programming and speech and our statement should provide clarity and insight. Just because this event is happening, it is not endorsed by the university or SGA. We get the fire for this. If one side supports something our e-board gets the fire.

A. Reached out to professors within the arts department to identify students interested in the rebranding initiative.

B. I met with Tim Murray and Caitlin Sullivan to discuss our accessibility initiative regarding ADA doors. After reviewing our shared goals and accessibility considerations, we agreed it would be more effective to move away from QR codes and instead implement a clear, accessible sticker on ADA doors with the statement below. To ensure accessibility for all individuals, the sticker will be designed using high-contrast black-and-white text to accommodate colorblind users.
