1. Jesse Webster: I hope to be responsive to you. I am responsible for technology and I run ITS at Hofstra. Some of the updates are things that I expect questions for. I will start with Identity and access management, which is something we talked about last time I was here. We are doing a project which we hope to complete by the first week of summer where Duo will eventually go away, passwords etc. to make things more seamless and secure. Adobe creative cloud access was suggested and unfortunately we were unable to do that but we are hoping to solve that in this new project. We hope to use these tools to make things better. We also talked about ChatGPT Edu last time I was here and there were 5000 students who already had an account before we started it. We have 4400 ChatGPT edu users and a lot of students are not using it in Hofstra. Those not using it from the school are not counted in those numbers. We are always going to have challenges but so far it’s going well. Last time students asked for faculty to have more
programming around AI and since then CELTA has hosted symposiums that show when AI should and shouldn’t be used. Some intellectual property concerns were outlined. There were dynamic conversations that allowed students to have what they needed in the context of their fields. I took some feedback on pride print. We added a supply station in the hammer lab. We are trying to have more colored printers to replace the black and white ones. I also took feedback on wifi. It is a perennial challenge and it’s hard to know what the issue is. We have a process in ITS when you have a wifi challenge. You can go to the portal and report a dead spot on campus. We have the tools to fix that and make sure our network is working properly. If you report it we will help you in the moment. It is much easier to receive that feedback when an issue exists. Email us, use the portal or approach the desk in the library if you need assistance. Lastly, I want to talk about how the world is affecting cybersecurity. There are a lot of challenges with AI and one of the issues is cybersecurity. People use AI to be much more effective hackers and scammers. Some of these challenges are things you have experienced with people in your lives and they have started going after everyone else. AI makes it harder to identify when someone is tricking us. That is reality right now and if something feels weird it probably is. It is important to pause and make sure someone is who they say they are. This is something we can dig into if you experience it. We have another phishing account phishing@hofstra.edu, that you can contact and our teams can help you validate if something is real. This is why duo is very important even if it is very annoying. I hope you use factor authentication in everything you use and protect yourself. Some people use a text message from duo instead of the yes or no.
2. Chair Ahmad: This is a more aesthetic question, related to the buttons NAVIGATE is in all caps but everything else is regular
a. Jesse Webster: You just made my day. I will note that down.
3. Senator Mansour: Can you tell me more about the transition from Adobe to Canva? A lot of students here are using Adobe Express.
a. Jesse Webster: The university is licensed Adobe express and we did a soft roll out of it this year. We are not offering canva but it would be additive if you work with someone already using it. You can create lots of things with adobe express. Creativecloud@adobe.com has lots of tools.
4. Senator Chacon: Why do pride accounts not have access to Google Maps?
a. Jesse Webster: Google Maps is not offered by Google under the same contract we have with other apps. Once we have another contract we will turn on apps and youtube. It is just not offered to us in the same way it is offered to you personally.
5. Senator Urban: From my experience one of the most common scams on campus are GroupMe accounts that will infiltrate servers. Often they give away free concert tickets. I have had to kick, ban, block, and report at least 5 of these accounts, what can be done with these accounts?
a. Jesse Webster: I wish I had that kind of control. This is one of the worst parts of technology today. Many scams use personal accounts and so we can’t do anything other than report it to groupme. You reporting it does the same exact thing. I think you should report it to that phishing email because if it is happening to you it is likely happening to others. They do tend to listen to us. We will support you but Hofstra doesn’t use personal phone numbers and groupme so we can’t control that.
6. Chair Iacobovici: I have had an issue with loaner computers. My charger was discontinued and it broke so I had to order it on Amazon. It would take a long time to order this and get it approved. Loaner computers are there for an emergency, but if you cannot access it the same day it makes no sense. I feel you should be able to reserve them in advance.
a. Jesse Webster: I am sorry that was your experience. We have purchased a new suite of loaner computers and we are working with the library so you can check them out just like a book. You will be responsible for returning them and this is usually for one day so you can borrow and return and borrow again.
7. Senator Smook: On AI reading names at graduation, is there any progress to eliminate this and what would it take for this not to happen? Is there any way admin can go back to reading names.
a. Jesse Webster: It is what will happen at the upcoming graduation. This is based on students whose names were mispronounced at graduation. This is to make it more accurate for students in this big moment. Some names are recorded by a person and those clips are played as you walk
across the stage. The reason for this is for this accuracy and students have that moment when they walk across the stage. It is also so people watching on tv, to see the student’s name as they walk the stage. I can take the feedback but the goal is not outsourcing to AI.
8. Senator Vazquez: Are there any new tools the university plans on providing aside from Adobe?
a. Jesse Webster: We try to make all the tools available in my apps. Everyone gets a free Microsoft office. All the other apps are listed there and in pride desktop. We can work to publicize apps if you notice students don’t know about them. Apple and Lenovo, Dell and HP are devices that have student discounts. Go to hofstra.edu/buypc and it will direct you to the store.
9. Senator Pierre: You talked about transitioning away from Duo and into more seamless methods of verification, what timeframe would this be completed in?
a. Jesse Webster: We are trying to complete the work for this over the summer and not try to disrupt anybody. We won’t not make you change your password or not use duo. We will let you transition. You will transition to octo which works similarly. We will communicate a lot about this later on. The whole transition should be completed within 12 months.
10. Senator Araba: I have a couple of issues in Breslin Hall. In room 0029, the projector is often not working and they have to call IT.
a. Jesse Webster: When we are aware of such a classroom, we prioritize it and will be addressed over the summer. I will take a look at the classroom and get back to you. Anyone at Hofstra can report an issue like this.
11. Secretary Danek: For CHATGPT edu I saw there are new updates like adding your name, and other details and where it links to other apps. How can we ensure that chatgpt edu isn’t picking up data from other applications or just using your personal data to train its models? I feel like that is a security issue.
a. Jesse Webster: We negotiated a contract with OpenAI that we do not train models on what you put in. The apps we provide you cannot share your data. The same thing is true for ChatGPT Edu. It is asking for you rname for sharing features that the university does not have enabled. We
make sure ChatGPT is not scraping data and we are continually reviewing this.
12. Senator Bokhari: I have an issue with buildings with basements where there is no connection. Can you go over with me how we can report this in Davison?
a. Jesse Webster: You can email help@hofstra.edu or you can report it in the portal under ITS. We will go and survey the place to determine service. We may move antennas around or add some.
13. Senator Pierre: When you turn off windows and they go into sleep mode, can we change the sleep patterns without authorization from the administrator? If I log in right now and do not touch my computer and use it to play music, it will go to sleep. The sleep patterns are locked by administration on the Hofstra email.
a. Jesse Webster: That’s part of our project where things would stay open for longer. You shouldn’t have to take any action and it should just become something that happens.
14. VP Young: There is software on computers where you can make AI-generated videos. It is only available in the Comms school, can it be available on other computers?
a. Jesse Webster: I don’t know the terms of that license but I would be able to find it out for you. I went to the comms school and asked them. It’s not part of the broader suite. It is one faculty member that requested it in one room. It is specified for 4 machines and is for 1 journalism class. If faculty asks for it we can have it, but it is not something we are currently doing.
15. Senator Vazquez: In Axinn library ground floor, there are 3 TVs that do not seem functional and there are wires hanging below the desks. Can these TVs be used?
a. Jesse Webster: That sounds like something we should consider. We are looking at the lower level for technology improvements over the summer so we will look at the screens. If something is there and broken it should either be fixed or moved.
16. VP Young: There is a speaker in a suite in the Comms school that works perfectly, the rest have issues.
a. Jesse Webster: The school of communication has their own facility staff so I will bring it up to them.
17. Senator Pierre: In residence halls, the smaller TVs are not necessarily working, they need chargers. Is there any strategy to fix those?
a. Jesse Webster: We can absolutely walk through. Whenever you see something wrong like that you should tell your RA or RD.
18. Senator Noel: There is no WiFi in the parking lot for commuters, is there anything that can be done about this?
a. Jesse Webster: We have taken steps for outdoor wifi over the years and it is an exceptionally difficult problem because outside is big and we have no where to hang things on. In the quads and some athletic facilities, we have added some antennas for wifis. Parking lots are big open spaces. We can take a look but it is something that we can’t just do. It might be a few years before that problem is solved.
19. Senator Chacon: I work in Barnard and my supervisor said her and the other office were supposed to get new computers. They were installed a couple of weeks ago, why did it take so long for computers to be installed in these offices? How are offices selected for new computers, do those offices put in a request for new computers?
a. Jesse Webster: We are experiencing an interesting time in the supply chain because of AI. When Hofstra buys something, we buy 1000s of them. thE lead times are long so unfortunately there is nothing we can do about that. Every 4 years faculty gets a new device of their choice. A machine has a date when it has to be replaced. Those choices are baked into our system because of that schedule. We collected that data in May 2025. The equipment didn’t come until January after we placed the order in the summer. We then have to roll it out to faculty.
20. Senator Bokhari: I notice the plugs in the chairs in Breslin or on the ground floor are loose and do not even charge, can this be fixed?
a. Jesse Webster: Not something I can fix but I can report it to facilities and they can fix it. For the SGA outlet in the wall, this is a work request you can put in.
21. VP Young: I notice I now have to log onto the WiFi every time I turn on my TV, can this be fixed?
a. Jesse Webster: It is possible that it is just a software issue we have to work on. Sometimes our security control
doesn’t work the same as your home. You can send us your TV brand and we can fix that. We did change a lot of the wifi infrastructure in the dorms so it could be that.
22. Senator Vazquez: In the residence halls, the TVs work but the streaming services do not. The RDs cannot figure this issue out.
a. Jesse Webster: This is going to be like the google maps answer. We can’t have Netflix as an institution. You have to use your own netflix account. Something would have to log in to the tv. We had to block some of those things so you can cast it from your device. The remotes were probably changed by the RDs.
23. Senator Gillani: We worked on the charging program. I held onto a charger for 4 days to see if I would get an email to return it and I did not. I think this is a security risk, is there any way to install a magnet on these chargers to keep a record of which ones need to be returned?
a. Jesse Webster: There is a mechanism for things checked out from the library to be reported but maybe it’s not in a 4 day span. I will definitely look into it.

1. Senator Vira: I am updating the j-panel constitution to make chief justices present a report to senate twice a semester. They can appoint another justice if they cannot make it. This is so senate can be updated with the actions of the j-panel.

a. Senator Vira: The chief justice can interpret it as they deem appropriate.
3. Senator Pierre: What if the J-Panel has nothing to report on?
a. Senator Vira: They meet every week and this is just something to keep everyone in the loop.

1. Comptroller Skeldon: This week we had the president/vicepresident debate held on Monday. All those who sent in a packet were eligible for senate campaigning. Collected candidate bios and these were sent to Sev and IT. Any physical flyers and posts need to be taken down. Voting opens on Monday and ends on Wednesday. The election bash is on Thursday.
2. Chair Chauhan: Do nominations happen during turnover or at special elections?
a. Comptroller Skeldon: Nominations happen during turnover after the 91st senate starts and the president and vp are sworn in. However, anyone can move to open nominations at any time.
2. Senator Vira: Are we responsible for taking down flyers or is OSLE?
a. Comptroller Skeldon: Candidates are responsible.
3. Senator Pierre: Are the results of the election made public?
a. Comptroller Skeldon: Vote totals for President and VP are revealed in the final elections commission report next week.

i. Chair Ahmad: I am really grateful for everyone who came to the protest, but for anyone who was on the sidelines laughing, be aware of what your goal is within your SGA role and how you represent students.
ii. Senator Mansour: My voice is gone, thanks to everyone who came and it meant so much to all of us who felt affected by this event.
iii. Senator Pierre: What was talked about and said at the SSI event? I would like to be aware of what happened or what was said.
iv. Senator Smook: They just spoke on their experiences in the IDF and Gaza. It was informational.
v. Chair Ahmad: IDF soldiers discriminated and shamed students at the event when we were promised we would not?
vi. Senator Pierre: Were they also discriminating against people of color?
vii. Chair Ahmad: Openly, they only discriminated against students of color.
viii. Senator Mansour: You had to read on a mic, a student left in tears because he felt disrespected.
ix. Chair Chauhan: We were promised that the event would be shut down if there was discrimination. That didn’t happen. It was distasteful.
x. Chair Ahmad: The discrimination was a response to a question I asked. Sharmeen and Rabbi Dave stepped in but at that point the event was coming to an end and they could not do anything to get an apology.
xi. Senator Smook: I personally didn’t notice any discrimination.
xii. Senator Araba: I know there is a lot of tension and I disagree with many peers, but we need to work for students and listen to some of their concerns. Understanding the way students see us, many students do not know what we are doing. For the next senate I would say to be open to the student and be open to compromise. We have different opinions but when we enter this room it is the greenhouse, we should talk about student issues.
xiii. Senator Subramanian: I am also leaving senate, but we should take a different perspective. We have a cabinet and e-board, but we are individuals who can advocate within our own roles. You do not have to go along with what everyone is doing. It is more important than ever to know what you are discussing.
xiv. Senator Smook: You have to represent everyone. Even if I don’t get reelected it has been an honor and it was fun.
xv. Senator Araba: I feel the statement would have been better if it was on Instagram.

A. SAS & DREAM conducted a curb cut review and identified areas on campus that are inaccessible to wheelchair users who regularly travel on campus. If you have noticed an area that is not identified in this report, please input your observations below.

B. Art Department Status - Reached out to the chair of the department, and they are currently identifying professors specializing in painting to push the opportunity to participate in a mural. This, however, is expected to be delayed due to finals. If you know anyone who is artsy, please let them know of this opportunity
C. Will be meeting with RESLIFE Director Novia Ramsey to discuss the work order system and how residents are notified (if at all). If you have any concerns that needs to be addressed to RESLIFE in general please list them below:
