JON VAN ZYLE — ALASKAN ARTIST AND STORYTELLER

For over five decades, renowned Alaskan artist Jon Van Zyle has captured the spirit, beauty, and wonder of the Last Frontier through his paintings. Originally from the East Coast, Jon has called Alaska home since the 1970s, where the land and its wildlife continue to be his greatest inspiration.

Jon’s acrylic paintings reflect his deep connection to Alaska — from racing sled dogs through the remote interior to exploring Denali National Park or fishing along the Kenai River. His firsthand experiences fuel the majestic imagery that defines his work.

A veteran of the legendary 1,049-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, Jon has twice completed the grueling journey from Anchorage to Nome. Since 1979, he has proudly served as the official artist of the Iditarod, creating the annual poster series that celebrates the race and its enduring legacy.

Jon’s prolific career includes more than 60 original works each year, depicting the wildlife, landscapes, and people of Alaska. His artistic reach extends beyond canvas—he has illustrated over 50 books for both children and adults and has held more than 250 solo exhibitions worldwide.

Nationally and internationally recognized, Jon’s evocative portrayals of Alaska have earned him numerous awards and honors, including induction into the Iditarod Hall of Fame in 2004.

In 2025-2026, Jon continues to expand his creative journey with the debut of his first fabric collection in collaboration with Hoffman Fabrics: Moonlight Encounter. This collection celebrates the mystique of the moon and the wolves that roam Alaska’s magical wilderness.
