Pocono Mountain West High School is home to West Marching Band–a
group of incredibly musically inclined students who strive to achieve a similar goal, to work as a team creating great things in a small amount of time. Every area in the band from sections and color guard, to percussion, are very important as a whole and rely greatly on each other to make performances a success.
What makes West Marching Band different from others is students from
Pocono Mountain West Junior High School, as well as, Pocono Mountain School District Elementary Schools are included. These youthful bright minds in music bring strength to our group; while allowing younger family members of high school performers a chance to expand leadership skills and experience public performances early on.

This year’s marching band IDEA, Pandemic, possesses a dark theme
from new drill writer, Jason Bentley. The band also has three Drum Majors this year; with Lead Major being the youngest ever elected. Sophomore Marissa Kane has four years of experience under her belt as she takes the role of composing. She conducts the band during performances or competitions. Michael Scardigno Jr. starts his Senior Year as Visual Drum Major, correcting the band on marching styles and performances. Dax Sowul is Music Drum Major. The High School Junior is coming into his fourth year of marching band. The position entails his guidance for sound warm ups and correcting issues musically. All three Drum Majors agree that the students are a band as a whole, so by staying on task and work together while listening to their superiors, they can get things done efficiently.

As teachers and class leaders often use the phrase, “How you practice is how you perform,” it is un-
derstood that they expect the band to work their hardest every hour to put on the best show whether it’s for their team’s football games or facing competitions.

Section Leaders take on the responsibility of helping their units learn specific music and marching styles.
With all-hands-on-deck, students learn quickly and effectively; while feeling welcomed by upperclassmen.
Marching Band requires a significant amount of dedication and team spirit. Performers are dependent on one another every moment you play out in the field. Before each new school year, practices normally begin once summer starts from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Band Camp runs two weeks in August from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

music booster president MaryJo Bozym What history do you have with the music department? My daughter has participated in Marching Band since her Freshman year, she is a Senior this year.
What do you see as one of the benefits of being part of the parents crew? Watching the band students grow over
the years. Watching the kids perform at games and their support of all the events at West. The comradery they had with the Cheerleaders and Football Players.
Bandwords Interviews band director Jeff Mark Did you enjoy music as a child?
I enjoyed music when I started playing the trumpet.
Did the experience inspire you to go into music as a future career? It was
one of the reasons I considered continuing with a career in music education.
Did anyone significant in your life push you toward it? I always admired the
music teachers that I had in elementary school through high school. As much as I admired them, I don’t think any of them actually pushed me to study music. It was my own desire to continue doing something I love and to try and pass that passion for music along to others.
Do you have a major say when it comes to choosing a theme for the year? The marching band staff starts that
conversation every year in the car ride on the way to championships. We bounce around ideas from November until whenever we finally reach a decision. Last year we had the theme picked before the last school year ended.

What made you want to CONTINUE helpING oUT? Both of my Daughters love mu-
sic and playing in the band. I wasn’t in the Marching Band in high school…but when they decided to join the PMWHS Marching Band, I supported them wholeheartedly and wanted to help out as much as I could. Their decision to join led them both to become Drum Majors.
What do you see as one of the benefits of being part of the parents crew? Being a part of the Band Dad’s allows
me to get behind the scenes and to interact and know the kids better. Helping them get to get ready to take the field in performance is a great feeling…especially when they get great scores. Hanging with the other Band Dad’s too is always a good time.

spread enthusiasm for overall school spirit starting with an October 25 breakfast.
“They don’t like losing and neither do I,”– the chilling statement by Pocono Mountain West massive Right Guard Guy Gilyard, created the tone for things to come as varsity players set sights on bragging rights in the district’s first Pride of the Mountain football trophy rivalry October 27th against East. Proven an effective tool to fuel focus, Panthers pounced on-field bringing victory home to deck the halls of Sullivan Trail campus; though pregame day attitude seemed to pack a higher magnitude. Demonstrating not all that glitters is gold (though the trophy truly is impressive), the idea of district-wide comradery
before going head-to-head later that week. School officials, coaches, as well as, game and Pride of the Mountain t-shirt sponsor Coordinated Health guests and trainers, came together encouraging all to see beyond a one game draw at the bigger picture–District XI playoffs–a first-ever opportunity for West. Head Coach since 2002, Jim McCarroll’s reasoning that onthe-field contention comes with football; but when the game ends, handshakes and support for fellow district friends should endure resonated. A one campus call to follow the Panther’s path turned to well more than two with East and beyond cheering them on.

Agreeing education is of the utmost importance, skills absorbed through observation and communication often run parallel in value outside the classroom. Our authors share a pupil’s view recognizing Pocono Mountain West High School professional points to be applauded, compelled to tell of particular persons of interest.
Latisha Griffith tells of Mancini talents It’s finally senior year and I want to acknowledge an influential someone who has been my consultant. During my stay at West High School, I could seek guidance from, find the answer to a question about life in general, or simply have a casual conversation with Mrs.Kim Mancini. I had Mrs.Mancini for English in the 9th Grade and currently this is my second year with her for Broadcast Journalism. These years were spent well familiarizing myself with who she is. A teacher should teach their students the required materials, but the student can also learn valuable skills, such as how to productively work independently and meet deadlines, making Ms.Mancini this teacher for me. She has taught me great work ethics. Hence, I have become a more responsible human being with her input making my life run a little bit smoother.
Mrs.Mancini has a diverse and joyous soul. She has many points of view and seeks to understand those she does not. In order to understand someone, we have to listen. Mrs. Mancini listens to her students. I can certainly say that I have never met a student at West who has said they do not take a liking to Mrs.Mancini.

Spending the last two years of her high school career with Ms.Mancini; the West High School Junior agrees the educator’s talents exceed an English balance. Smiling, “I think she [Ms. Mancini] is fabulous, she says. Adding, “I wouldn’t have loved Broadcast Journalism if I didn't have her as a teacher.” Explaining, “She [Kim Mancini] has taught me how to improve my anchoring skills,” the student goes on to state how improvement exceeds learning.

Eager to explore other’s views, our author shares Kristi Jones thoughts before concluding with her own “I always come to her for advice, she gives the right concrete answers that you need” she reasons. Ms. Mancini always encourages me to shine brightly not only in my academic success, but also in the opportunities acquired outside of the classroom. In addition to giving advice, she could be my calm during the storm. She can be my assurance through stressful or confusing times. I know that I could have shown my appreciation on a Teacher Appreciation form, but I feel like it would never amount to the positive impact she has had on my mental maturity into adulthood.I am not just writing this to show my admiration for a wonderful teacher, but also to show my appreciation to a person who has become one of my dearest friends.

Christina Grouzis points on Pocoro Eugene Pocoro, a teacher at Pocono Mountain West High School since 2005, is a successful man who is always positive about his job and community. His favorite thing about teaching is his students. and is someone who loves when a new year starts because he gets to meet all new students. Mr. Poroco reminds, “ People are dynamic, they are unpredictable, people change everyday.” He relates everything to current life like our own Mr. Feeny from “Boy Meets World.” Mr. Porcoro specialized in teaching history, until he was asked to teach psychology. In his opinion, the most important thing about the mind is that we don’t know everything about it. He says, “We’re like Europe back in the day, there was a whole new world we didn’t know about”. Mr. Pocoro went to Mid Valley High School. He was active in Ski Club and served as Vice President of Student Council. He went to college at The University of Scranton and double majored in history and secondary education.
During his free time,he enjoys spending time with his family, playing Italian Bocce Ball, and going to church. His favorite thing about going home everyday is when his kids say, “Hello Daddy!” I was lucky enough to be a student in Mr.Pocoro’s class freshman year. He’s the wisest person I’ve ever met. He wants all kids to know that they are lucky to go to such a great school.

BIOLOGY CLUB–a recent addition to a long roster
of activities available to students attending Pocono Mountain West, was established in order to tutor those falling behind on difficult coursework and to provide a way for older students to interact with the underclassmen. Advised by Biology and Life Science teachers, Ms. Crowe and Mrs. Miller, the program lets students prepare for Biology Keystones and go in depth on content for those beginning to learn the subject. Inside the classroom, advisors hold strategic competitions that demonstrated intriguing facts like how plants use energy to grow leaves and produce flowers, a review of the organelles within a cell using candy, and a cheese-making lab where students use enzymes and milk to create their own mozzarella. Considering coordinator insight an ideal way to understand the program each shared points of perception. Noting what Biology Club stands for and how it will change in the years to come Ms. Crowe smiled, “Personally I think this was a good start to a new endeavor that will hopefully continue to grow and develop. Our goal of helping students be more comfortable with science, enjoy science and be more successful was evident in a number of students throughout the course of the year.” Adding, “It was started as a way to get kids excited about science again. Due to the numbers and the students who participated, it evolved into more of a tutoring program, using older students as mentors to younger ones. From what students expressed, they appreciated the help. I hope in the future it will be more student led and less teacher led.”

Mrs. Miller added her own insight on Cell Discovery stating, “When the club first started we did a number of ice breaker activities. I enjoyed those because it gave me a chance to learn something about the members that I did not know from 7th grade. I also enjoyed the fun competition and content review that Kahoot and Quizlet Live games gave us at the end of each meeting.” The Bio Club was created to get students to like science again. In 8th grade students were given of massive amounts of science content review and then again with biology content review, drill, and practice. The club allows for a more relaxed (and fun) way to be exposed to science. It is also a place for students to interact with older (and grade/test successful) students. Intent is to expand on successful activities and try new ones to spark increased awareness and participation. Upperclassmen who have proven themselves as mentors may have the opportunity for internships in the future. Guest speakers may join in; and new field trip opportunities may arise. Working with other West teachers, feedback to incorporate what was suggested into meeting “themes” will aid in planning. Welcoming even more communication, Keystone teachers are encouraged to offer suggestions for activities of the club. With hope that through this club negative associations students may have in relation to science may be changed into positive ones; teachers will continue to provide students with the knowledge of certain career opportunities that they may have not known about.
