Premium Hiking in the Black Forest Highlands

Hiking Signage

The Black Forest has a uniform hiking signage system which was introduced by the Schwarzwaldverein and the Black Forest Mountain Rescue.

The signposts provide the name of the location and the distances to the next signpost location as well as other destinations. Between the signpost locations, the trails feature smaller signs in diamond shapes (mostly yellow, but also red or blue). Special emergency kilometre markers can also be found on the Black Forest Highlands premium trails. 5 These complement the emergency guidance system of the Schwarzwaldverein and allow for more rapid assistance by rescue workers in an emergency, also between the signpost locations. Like the locations of the Schwarzwaldverein signposts, the kilometre information locations are stored at the emergency control centres (tel.: 112). Should you happen to get lost on your chosen hiking trail, remember that the corresponding diamond will always guide you between the signpost locations. 6

1

2 Location field: name of the location with altitude above sea level. Location name = rescue location!

Destination field: with names of the next signpost locations and distance in kilometres to them. Pictograms with info about public transport, gastronomy, infrastructure where applicable.

3 Guiding trail diamond: also includes the name of the trail with long-distance hikes.

4 Hike sign: with its own symbol on the signpost. The respective diamond leads the way between signposts.

Premium hiking in the Black Forest Highlands

Hikers can find everything their heart desires all year round on more than 2,100 kilometres of signposted trails. Magnificent views of forests, mountains and lakes guarantee adventurous experiences and ensure hiking pleasure.

The Black Forest Highlands premium trails are mostly signposted as circular tours. These trails combine stunningly beautiful natural scenery with excellent refreshment points.

All the premium trails are also certified by the German Hiking Institute as premium hiking trails. Premium, because, in contrast to the regular hiking trails, they are additionally equipped with a continuous system of signposts, guarantee nature-like hiking trails off the roads and provide for especially enjoyable experiences.

You can generally find your way on your hike using the “Bollenhut” Hat premium trail markers with the 1 name of the hike. In some places, only the “Bollenhut” Hat marking 2 is used between the signpost locations and at intermediate signposts. At the intermediate signposts you will find either the red signposts 3 or those from the Schwarzwaldverein. At the signpost locations you can find your way using the red 4 signposts.

What is high altitude climate?

Particularly high air quality, oxygen-rich forests and an altitude of over 800 metres characterise the health resorts in the Black Forest Highlands. On vital hikes across extensive meadows and through idyllic villages you can enjoy wonderful views and recharge your batteries.

Hiking on specially designated “high altitude hiking trails” in the officially recognised health resorts of Hinterzarten, Titisee, Schluchsee, Schluchsee-Fischbach, Schluchsee-Faulenfürst, Schönwald, St. Blasien, Lenzkirch and Lenzkirch-Saig supports your well-being in a gentle way due to the mild, stimulating climate. You can experience and intensely appreciate a range of revitalising climate elements while you hike. The varied difficulty levels of the high altitude hiking trails make it possible for you to enjoy the stimulating climate in a measured way to improve your vitality.

The body learns, through varying stimulation, how to react to different temperatures or oxygen levels and activate adjustment processes. Breathing and circulation are stimulated, for example. The combination of exercise, being close to nature and the benefits of the high altitude climate actively contribute to improving your health and guarantee relaxation at the same time. Healthy hiking in the high altitude climate region therefore has a particularly long-lasting effect on your body, mind and spirit.

Forest bathing

Mindfulness instead of action

The crucial difference between your usual walk and forest bathing lies in mindfulness.

The soothing green and the tranquillity of the forest allow stress hormones to ebb away and bring balance to the soul. During forest bathing, the heartbeat measurably slows, blood pressure drops and general well-being improves. The unique forest climate plays a crucial role here: the treetops provide shade, while the trees evaporate water at the same time. This results is pleasantly cool temperatures even on hot summer days and provides higher humidity than in other locations.

Time spent in the forest lets you escape the hustle and bustle, unwind and experience a deep sense of natural well-being.

Peterstaler - pure water. Pure Black Forest.

It first starts to bubble in the foothills of the Black Forest: the valuable mineral water springs in Bad Peterstal and Bad Rippoldsau were discovered in the first half of the 19th century and spring from the depths of the Black Forest, with water pure and fresh. For water experts, this mineral water is among the highest quality water in Germany, thanks to its balance of minerals and the harmonious taste.

The “Black Forest” brand of still mineral water is especially popular at present. It is Germany’s lowest-sodium mineral water in Germany, has recently been recognised with the highest Öko-Test rating of “very good” and is one of the most widely-consumed still mineral waters in Germany. Thanks to its name, the “Black Forest” brand acts as an ambassador for the Black Forest, one of the best known and most popular holiday regions in the world.

Our 10 golden principles

Experience nature, respect agriculture.

Stay on the trails to protect wildlife

Tranquillity is important for both wildlife and plants. Hike along the marked paths – that’s how we protect our nature.

On the move together

Whether it’s cycling, jogging or winter fun – use the paths that are provided and take account of others.

Enjoy nature to the full

Flowers, fruits and berries are a gift.

Pick berries in moderation – so there’s enough for everyone.

Litter isn’t welcome here

Take all your rubbish home with you.

Keep dogs on a leash

Keep your dog on a leash and collect any waste.

Don’t disturb wildlife

Stay calm and respectful and at a distance.

Close fences and gates

If you open fences or gates always close them again.

Park responsibly

Use parking spots in designated areas and leave the exit routes clear. Travelling by public transport not only means you don’t need to find a parking space, but also helps to reduce the burden on the environment.

Respect private property

Fields, forests and farms are also places of work. Only enter them with permission.

Stay with nature in mind

If you use designated areas or trekking camps for camping or making fires, be sure to protect the landscape.
