So much to discover: protected natural havens, family-friendly leisure parks, a rich museum scene – and plenty more besides – await you in the Black Forest Highlands.

With its 21 towns and villages, this holiday region offers something for every taste. From famous highlights such as Lake 'Titisee' and the Gorge 'Wutachschlucht' to lesser-known gems like Lake 'Blindensee' or the Museum 'Le Petit Salon' Winterhalter. This booklet features a selection of the most popular attractions and sights in the holiday region, organised by place. Bergwelt Todtnau

From the Feldberg massif down into the valley 'Wiesental': the town of Todtnau and its eight districts stretch across elevations of 600 to 1,400 metres. Together, they form Bergwelt Todtnau. The glacier-sculpted landscape of narrow valley basins, gentle high valleys, one of Germany’s highest waterfalls and the 450-metre BLACKFORESTLINE suspension bridge is a paradise for nature lovers. Winter sports fans will find plenty to enjoy around Muggenbrunn and Todtnauberg, as well as at the pass 'Notschrei'.

Bonndorf

Bonndorf lies at an elevation of 600 to 1,050 metres in the north-east of the Waldshut district, around 18 kilometres north of the Swiss border. It’s an ideal holiday destination with modern infrastructure and a wide range of leisure activities. The baroque rooms and splendid grand hall at castle 'Schloss Bonndorf' are the cultural centre of the district' Waldshut', providing an impressive stage for a wide-ranging programme of art, music and literature. The adjoining parkland – with the castle garden and the Japanese Garden – invites you to pause, relax and linger.

Breitnau A Inspireyourself!

Set on a high plateau above the Valley 'Höllental', at 1,000 metres above sea level, is the climatic health resort of Breitnau. Between scattered hamlets with magnificent Black Forest farmhouses, woodland patches alternate with wide meadows. Narrow paths lead through the wild Gorge 'Ravennaschlucht' with its waterfalls and cascades, historic mills and old cable drives – and an imposing railway viaduct, which forms the backdrop to the popular Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market in Advent.

Take a break in style on the 'LandSitz' at the 'Fahrenberger Höhe' viewpoint. The four-metre-long bench was created in collaboration with the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein. Its flowing shape blends beautifully into the rolling landscape – with wonderful views included.

Eisenbach

AIR QUALITY RESORT

In the 19th century, Eisenbach had more clockmakers and suppliers for clock production than any other place in the Black Forest –relative to its population. A selection of remarkable cuckoo clocks and other timepieces is on display in the local history room. The climatic health resort, with the districts of Oberbränd, Bubenbach and Schollach, is surrounded by unspoilt forests and offers one of the region’s finest Alpine panoramas from Mountain 'Höchst'.

The world’s first ski lift´

The Schollach district lies idyllically in a long, gentle valley that’s perfect for exploring by bike in summer and on crosscountry skis in winter. Near inn' Gasthof Schneckenhof', you’ll find the slope where the world’s first ski lift went into operation in 1908. Inventor Robert Winterhalder used his mill and a circulating cable to pull guests uphill. Today, only the old mill building remains as a reminder.

Feldberg

At 1,493 metres, Feldberg is not only the highest peak in the Black Forest, but also the highest of all Germany’s low mountain ranges. The municipality of the same name, officially recognised as a climatic health resort, also includes the area around hotel 'Feldberger Hof'. Where a French diplomat was the first to ski in 1891 – making Feldberg the cradle of skiing in Central Europe – visitors today set off to explore Baden-Württemberg’s largest nature reserve.

Friedenweiler

The story of this climatic health resort is shaped by the former nunnery and Lake 'Klostersee', now used as an outdoor pool with a heated swimmers’ pool. The wide meadows around the Rötenbach district are partly protected, as is the Gorge 'Rötenbachschlucht', popular with walkers. Music lovers know the municipality for the Straub family of violin makers, whose exquisite string instruments were played by Beethoven, among others.

Cuckoo clocks and Furtwangen are inseparable: the extensive collection of the German Clock Museum traces back to the clockmaking school founded in 1850. The museum is currently being refurbished and will remain closed until 2027. The renowned Furtwangen University shares the same roots. The town and its four districts are surrounded by gentle Black Forest valleys. Lenzkirch

Nestled between Lake 'Titisee', Lake 'Schluchsee' and the Gorge 'Wutachschlucht', the climatic health resort of Lenzkirch includes the districts of Saig, Kappel, Raitenbuch and Grünwald. The Lake 'Windgfällweiher' with its nostalgic lido, the panoramic mountain 'Hochfirst' and the protected valley 'Urseetal' are perfect examples of the area’s varied landscapes. Lenzkirch was once a centre of Black Forest clock production, from where many clock sellers set off on trading journeys.

Schluchsee

This climatic health resort lies on the shore of the largest lake in the Black Forest. Completed in 1932, the dam not only serves as a vast energy reservoir, but also makes the area a paradise for watersports enthusiasts. Boats, canoes and paddleboards can be hired, for instance in the bay 'Wolfsgrundbucht', at the lido or by the dam. Away from the water, there’s plenty to experience in Schluchsee and its five districts too – such as a trip on historic trains along the 'Dreiseenbahn' railway line.

Plenty of sunshine hours and an impressive Alpine panorama –that’s what characterises the municipality of Ühlingen-Birkendorf, made up of eight villages near the Swiss border. Travel without the stress

As a guest in the Black Forest Highlands, you can use buses and trains across the entire Black Forest free of charge – including for longer journeys. The card with the KONUS symbol is valid as a free ticket on buses and trains run by participating transport associations for the period shown on your card (ICE, IC and EC services are excluded).

The SBG Wutachschlucht hiking bus takes you back to your starting point on walks in the Gorge 'Wutachschlucht' from April to mid-October. The SBG Hochschwarzwald hiking bus offers extra flexibility from April to October, travelling from St. Blasien via Bernau, Todtmoos and Todtnau to Feldberg, and back again.
