Medical Education I. Background and Overview of Program The MMSc in Medical Education Program (MMSc Med Ed) is a 64-credit, research-focused degree program. The HMS MMSc-Medical Education ensures that learners receive training in research methods and skills to conduct rigorous research in medical education. Additionally, learners receive a command of the foundational and emerging content domains in health professions education. The mission of the HMS Master of Medical Science in Medical Education (MMSc-Medical Education) is to give those who already excel in one of the health sciences disciplines an opportunity to turn their specialized knowledge and skill towards the advancement of health professions education. Through research, skill building, and innovation, the HMS MMSc-Medical Education seeks to transform health professions education in the service of advancing the health sciences and healthcare nationally and internationally. Graduates of our program will be well positioned to lead progress and make transformative change. The HMS MMSc-Medical Education is a two-year program with two primary goals: 1. To give students a solid foundation in the theories and principles underpinning health professions education such as the science of learning, strategies of curriculum development and education design, adult learning theories, integration of education technology, and principles of assessment. 2. To provide students with comprehensive tools and protected time to engage in research on the most important issues in the field. Our research objective includes empirical work, narrative data analysis using qualitative methods and hypothesis testing using quantitative analysis. II. Degree(s) Offered 1. Master of Medical Sciences in Medical Education is offered as a 64-credit program that may be completed full-time or part-time. The 64-credit, full-time program is offered over two academic years. 2. The program also offers a full-time, 56-credit program that is part of the HMS dual degree MD-MMSc program. Please note, medical students from other institutions must complete the 64-credit curriculum. The 56-credit program is one-year full time with additional work required during the fourth medical student year as part of the Scholars in Medicine medical student requirement. See Section 2.06 for definitions of full- and part-time. III. Prerequisites for Admission The MMSc-Medical Education is open to those who already possess or are in the process of completing a terminal academic or professional credential, such as MD, MBBS, PhD, or other doctoral degree in the nursing, pharmacy, public health or health professions-related fields.
