HEALTHY LIVING 4 EASY WAYS TO DRINK MORE WATER Water is essential for life. Your body, which is about 70 percent water, requires it for digestion, circulation, respiration, heat regulation, brain function and excretion. Water helps boost your metabolism, reduce your hunger and increase energy level. Thirst is a poor indicator of hydration status, and waiting until you’re thirsty to drink means that you are already 1 to 2 percent dehydrated, which is significant. Staying hydrated throughout the day is the key to maintaining proper hydration status. Do you struggle getting in enough water? Maybe you’re too busy to drink or just don’t like the taste of water. Getting in your recommended 2 to 3 liters of water a day can be a challenge. Try some of these proven strategies to help you boost your water intake.
1. PLAN If you find yourself so busy that you forget to drink enough water during the day have a plan to help make it easier. • Drink 8 ounces of water upon arising. • Decaffeinated and herbal tea count toward your intake, so sip some tea for your morning beverage. • Set an alarm on your phone or computer to go off at the top of every hour and drink 8 ounces each time it rings. By the end of an eight-hour workday, you will have consumed 64 ounces (about 2 liters).
2. FLAVOR • Try some of these flavor enhancers that don’t add any sugar or artificial flavors or colors. • Add some zip with your favorite citrus fruit. A generous squeeze of lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit or tangerine will add flavor and a small amount of natural sugar from the fruit’s juice for a little boost.
PAGE 6 | OCTOBER 2020
• Make it minty. Muddle some fresh mint leaves in the bottom of your glass or water bottle. This will make your water refreshing as the essential oils in mint help to energize your body and brain. • Invest in a water bottle with an infuser insert and fill it with berries. The fruit will flavor the water, while holding back any fruit or seeds from getting in the way when you drink.
3. TEMPERATURE Experiment with the temperature of your water. • Try it hot: Many people prefer warm or hot beverages like tea, especially on cold days. Green and herbal teas provide both flavor and immune-boosting, antiinflammatory compounds. • Try it cold: Ice cold water is refreshing and helpful during a workout when your core body temperature rises; drinking cold water can cool you down and extend your time to exhaustion. Place a water bottle in the freezer for an hour before exercising or fill your bottle with ice cubes and filtered water.
4. TEXTURE If you enjoy the texture of sparkling water, substitute it for regular water at any point during the day. Bottled sparkling water is relatively inexpensive, but watch out for those that contain added sugar. An alternative is to invest in a machine that makes carbonated water. These are often sold with sugary flavor enhancers, but be sure to enjoy it plain or add some flavor from lemon or lime juice. Increasing your water intake can be easy with a little planning. Whether you have to set a reminder, add a flavor or alter the temperature, little tweaks can make a big difference in staying hydrated.

RULES CORNER QUESTION When playing in a tournament and a person hits the ball out of bounds. Under the new rules of golf, the player must take the stroke and distance penalty, unless the rules sheet for the tournament says that players are allowed to drop where the ball last crossed the out of bounds stake with a two shot penalty added to the person score.

This group was started in May when a few ladies took group lessons from Denise Killeen through the Georgia Golf Performance group. We had such a great time, we decided we wanted more! Our group has grown the past few months and we have had as many as 22 ladies come out for a fun evening of golf, fresh air and exercise. If interested, please call the Pro Shop at 770-345-5500 x 1 by Sunday evening. We mix the teams so everyone gets to play with everyone in a casual, non-competitive game. All skill levels are welcome. We understand families and outside activities come up so call and play when you can.
See all the fun we've been having on page 24!
We appreciate everyone's cooperation in keeping our beautiful course looking as good or better than you find it during your round. Please continue to exhibit proper etiquette in repairing all ball marks properly, let us hope we can go back to sanding lots of divots along the way, and smoothing bunkers throughout the day. Also, remember to follow all cart rules, directional ropes & signage reminders throughout your round. Thank you in advance for your assistance! Please note that even the driving range has a no denim policy. Golf attire is required to play and practice at the facility. 770.345.5500

TIPS FROM THE PROS
Most amateur golfers hit less than half of the greens in regulation, so getting up and down consistently is invaluable. Practice games are an excellent way to develop those scrambling skills. HAVE YOU TRIED THE PAR-18 CHALLENGE? Set down nine balls at different spots around the practice green and try to get each one up and down in two shots. The closer you get to par-18 on this challenge, the more shots you’ll see off your scorecard. This is an excellent benchmarking skills test that’s well worth challenging yourself with at least once a month.

GOLF NEWS MGA NEWS YOU CAN USE … by Jeff Graham, MGA Board Communications Chair THE 2020 BRIDGEMILL MGA SHOOTOUT The results for the 2020 MGA Shootout are in and it was a great day of competitive golf. A special thanks to Denise, Troy, Maria, Andy, and their crews for a great job throughout the event. On Saturday, August 22nd, 40 players took to the course with the hope that they would come away as the Shootout Champion. In addition to the MGA Championship, MGA Player of the Year (POY) points were up for grabs. A big congratulations to Lincoln Lahmann who came out of the first flight to become the 2020 MGA Shootout Champion. Lincoln bested John Gerrard on the final shootout hole for the win. Congratulations to all who won their flights and trophy’s. The complete results, pro-shop payouts, and POY points are available at the MGA Website. Also included on the MGA website are the MGA Player of the Year standings. We have 2 more events remaining which will be counted in the POY race.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2020 MGA MATCH PLAY CHAMPION - LENNY REEVES After nearly four months of play, the 64 man field was reduced to one after Lenny Reeves defeated Scott Dunnington to earn the MGA Match Play Championship Belt for 2020. Until next year’s event, Lenny can sport the belt around the club or throw it on his cart for bragging rights. He will need to defend the title going into next year or else pass the belt on to the new champion.
BridgeMill MGA vs Lake Arrowhead MGA Challenge Cup event is planned for October 17th and 18th. The top 15 players in the POY standings will receive an invite to play. If those players are unable to commit to the 2 day event, the next in line will be invited. So it’s important to collect those points and move up the standings! This is also a busy time of year for club events. The club events do not count towards the MGA POY standings.
