HOW TO SUBMIT CONTENT FOR LAKE ARROWHEAD LIVING All content for consideration as well as all correspondence regarding Lake Arrowhead Living Magazine should be directed ONLY to layccnews@gmail.com. This is an integral process in place for checking to be sure all content received has been considered for each particular month's publication. Items sent to any other email address will possibly be omitted. Note that Lake Arrowhead Living is published monthly (12 issues per year) in an overlapping format that covers 2 months at a time. Magazines generally arrive in mailboxes around mid-month. For example, the June/July issue will promote late June and July events and will feature articles submitted by May 10th covering happenings that took place in April and May. New content is always due by the 10th of each month to be published in the next month's issue on the following schedule. Please note that the 10th is a HARD deadline for all content unless previously discussed and planned with the layout designer. This means that if you do not have a standing dedicated section of the magazine, your content is considered "new" and the deadline of the 10th applies. Those with standing dedicated sections have a grace period for submission decided by and agreed upon with their layout designer. golf news Red, White & Blue Scramble July 4th, 2022 Red, White, and Blue in this instance had a dual meaning. Besides representing Independence Day and our nation’s flag, it was an integral part of the tournament rules. As many of you know, the Lake Arrowhead Golf Course has five sets of tees, three of which are red, white, and blue. The closest (and typically easiest) are the red tees and the longest (and typically the hardest) are the blue tees. In between are the white tees. To start the tournament, each of the teams teed off from the white tees. If the team made a par, it continued to play from the white tees on the next hole. However, if the team made a birdie, it moved back to the harder blue tees on the next hole: if the team made a bogey, it moved up to the easier red tees. This process continued throughout the tournament. The tournament field was divided into three flights based on each team’s score. Pro Shop gift certificates were then awarded to each member of the top three teams in each flight. Ties were broken with a scorecard playoff starting on hole 18. The winners were: Flight 1st

golf news 2022 MEMBER – MEMBER On July 16th & 17th, 40 Lake Arrowhead golf members played in the 2022 Member – Member Golf Tournament. Always competitive, this year’s tournament was no exception. Brian Schell and Jeff Howell won the low gross score honors! George Gibbons and Bob Conaway won the overall low net score. The Member – Member Golf Tournament is an annual event where golf club members form 2-person teams to compete for trophies and prizes plus the honor of being named Tournament Champions for the year. The tournament format is known by several names (four ball, best ball, and better ball) but whatever it is called, it essentially requires each team member to play their own ball. At the end of each hole, the lowest individual score is recorded as the team score. This year’s tournament was divided into 4 flights: First, Second, Third and Ladies.

The theme for the 3rd, June 23rd Lake Arrowhead Ladies Golf Association golf event, was “The Clown Circus” (Pictures below) True to the event, several ladies showed up to ‘clown around’ for golf! We played a scramble with 2/3 players per team for 9 holes which was followed by lunch. Team scores were tallied, and winners awarded: 1st place team of Brophy/Bina 2nd place team of Garbiel/Cahill 3rd place team of Kreft/Taylor/Benefield Congratulations to all the winners!!!
Once again, Grace Kreft, shared her talent for the luncheon table decorations using the event theme. (Pictures below) We welcomed 3 new players for this event and hope that more new ladies will join us for our upcoming events in August, September & October. We always have lots of fun while we enjoy the fellowship and sportsmanship. Our next event is planned for July 14th. Sure hope to see everyone again and some new faces too. club business SHORT-TERM RENTAL ORDINANCE CHEROKEE COUNTY, GEORGIA Cherokee County, Georgia has recently adopted an ordinance regarding short-term rentals. The full ordinance is available at ShortTermRentalOrdinanceCherokeeCounty20210806.pdf (cherokeega.com), but we wanted to make each property owner aware of this ordinance and have highlighted a few of the key points in the ordinance. 1. The purpose of the ordinance is to establish standards for short-term rentals of privately-owned residential structures rented to transient occupants, minimize adverse effects of short-term rental uses on surrounding residential neighborhoods, and preserve the character of residential neighborhoods. 2. A certificate is required to lawfully rent, operate, or advertise any property for short-term rental. a. Owners must apply to the Cherokee County Development Services Center on an annual basis for a certificate. b. Certificates require an initial administration fee and annual renewal fees. 3. The Certificate number must be listed in any advertisement for the rental of the property. 4. No short-term rental shall offer more than five (5) bedrooms for rent. 5. The use of outdoor speakers by short-term rentals is prohibited. 6. The number of occupants shall not exceed two persons per bedroom plus two additional persons. 7. The short-term rental must have parking off the street sufficient for one car for each bedroom being rented. Parking shall only be on designated hard surfaced areas. 8. Quiet hours are 12:00 a.m. midnight to 7:00 a.m. daily, 12:00 a.m. midnight Saturday to 1:00 p.m. Sunday). 9. The Cherokee County Marshal’s office (678.493.4080) is tasked with enforcement of the ordinance

Narrows Marina Parking Permits have been mailed to Property Owners who currently lease a Narrows Boatslip. This permit must be placed on the inside windshield. Security looks for these yearly permits when checking the Narrows parking lot. Please register boats and trailers. See Boat Registration information below. BOAT REGISTRATION Boat registration forms may be downloaded from the website at lakearrowheadclub.net. Proof of liability insurance with limits not less than $300,000 is required for all motorized boats. Please mail a boat registration form and insurance to: LAYCC 486 Arrowridge Waleska, GA 30183, email membership@ lakearrowheadga.com, use the property owner drop boxes located at both security gates, or bring your form to the South Gate and the Administration office. All items in Dry Storage MUST display the current decal to continue using Lake Arrowhead Dry Storage. As a reminder, it is a violation of the covenants to park or store the following: boats, vehicles, trailers, campers, RVs, etc. on your property. Our crime rate in Lake Arrowhead is very low so let’s keep it that way- If you see suspicious activity, alert Security or Cherokee 911. Let’s all help keep our community safe. ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.
SHORT-TERM RENTAL GUIDELINES: PHASE I https://library.municode.com/ga/cherokee_county/ordinances/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=1106313 In order to protect and preserve the residential character, property values, and enjoyment of all homeowners within the Lake Arrowhead community, please observe the following guidelines for relative to short-term property rentals of Lake Arrowhead Phase I units. 1. Short-term property rentals (less than 6 months) are strictly prohibited in both Phase II and Phase III of Lake Arrowhead. The maximum number of occupants should be restricted to no more than two individuals per bedroom. 2. Short-term rentals should be registered with LA Security gate they intend to enter, and identified as short-term rentals so that the appropriate identification may be provided at check-in a. Amenity use cards, identifying renters and associated unit address b. Vehicle “hang tag” for vehicles 3. All rental agreements should include an acknowledgement that renters have received and agree to abide by the Lake Arrowhead Rules and Regulations a. If boat usage is included with the rental of the home, a printed copy of the lake rules and restrictions should be included with the rental agreement, a copy should be left in the home, and a laminated copy should be placed in the boat and/or attached to the boat key b. Violations of the lake rules and regulations may result in revocation of the issued boat permit and result in suspension of lake access privileges 4. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of guests and renters of their home and violations of the Covenants or Rules and Regulations will typically be handled in the following manner: a. 1st infraction – issuance of written warning to homeowner b. 2nd infraction – 30-day suspension of common property access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters c. 3rd infraction – 12-month suspension of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters d. 4th infraction – permanent loss of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters e. Addition steps may be taken depending on the nature of the infraction, including contacting the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department or taking additional legal to enforce the community governing documents f. Common property damage by renters, if applicable, will be levied against the lot owner g. Egregious infractions may result in immediate suspension of common property access and privileges or other sanctions 5. “Party Houses” are strictly prohibited and deemed a nuisance and violation of the Lake Arrowhead Covenants, Article III, Section 19. Party Houses are also prohibited by popular short-term rental companies (Airbnb and VRBO) and nuisance properties will be reported to the appropriate listing entity. club business MARINA PAVILION RULES AND REGULATIONS: HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events. FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore. PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind. ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion. NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks. NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks. BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks. PETS Pets are not allowed on the Marina Pavilion.

We love to compete with each other but the courts are filled with laughter as we support each other’s mistakes and cheer each other’s winning shots! So, give it a try! community interest LAKE ARROWHEAD FIRE DEPARTMENT IS HERE FOR US

Many residents of Lake Arrowhead have depended on services from the firemen located within our community. Although over the years there have been some changes, Fire Station #17 on Chickasaw Drive, near the dam of Lake Chickasaw (our “little lake”), is active 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Three firemen are always on duty and they work 24 hours on and then 48 hours off on continuing shifts. Years ago we had a volunteer fireman system, but this is no longer the case. The firetruck and emergency response come from our Station # 17 and the ambulance comes from the larger Fire Station #12 in Waleska. If a hospital is needed, either the one in Canton or the one in Jasper can be requested. Many residents do not realize the continuing assistance that the firemen here provide. That’s who you are connected to when you call 911 for help in an emergency! Realizing how lucky we are, the Women’s Activity Club is taking this opportunity to remind you that donations and gestures of kindness are enjoyed by the firemen. There is always a need for coffee (both ground and Keurig style individual pods), bottled water, and snacks. Home baked goodies are appreciated. Another thoughtful idea is a gift card to help with the expenses the firemen have each month for food, paper products, and other necessities of living in the fire station on long shifts. Supplies are usually bought at Walmart or Costco. (Please note, they can not use a check made out to the Fire Department.) One of our neighbors frequently brings bacon an eggs for the fridge. If you want an idea of what might be useful, you can always stop by and ask.

That is exactly what Carol and Ernie Parker did, and as a result the Women’s Activity Club (WAC) donated a new set of pots and pans in May. A family who had received life-saving help from the Fire Department within minutes of their emergency made a specific donation through WAC for this gift. Lieutenant Steve Smith, David Beasley, and Marcus Walker are pictured here with WAC represented by Carol Parker and Jane Wimmer. The Parkers have been active in helping support the Fire Station since moving to Lake Arrowhead in 2014. They have enjoyed helping with holiday events such as Halloween candy from the fire truck and 4th of July fireworks. In the past Ernie served on the Board of Directors of the Volunteer Fire Department for 5 years. Please consider what you can do to support the firemen in Lake Arrowhead, whether it is a donation or a note of thanks for specific help when you needed them. We are lucky to have them here for us.

Midnight in Chernobyl Adam Higgenbotham Simon and Schuster Midnight in Chernobyl is a terrifying account of the explosion of the Soviet Union’s Chernobyl Atomic Energy Station, one of the two worst nuclear accidents in history, the other being Fukishima. The radiation and its effects are so dangerous that explaining the various types, the way in which they are measured is almost beside the point. Radiation kills. Right away or years later. But there is another far more dangerous force – the culture of secrecy and speed that built up around nuclear development, especially in the Soviet Union, and how domestic nuclear power has always struggled to escape its military origins. This review will attempt to capture the confluence of the sometimes negligent, sometimes arrogant, sometimes demoralizing response to the accident. THE CONSTRUCTION Consistent with the culture of secrecy, until this project every reactor in the USSR had been constructed by The Ministry of Medium Machine Building: the clandestine organization behind the Soviet atomic weapons program. Its misleading name was intended to discourage curiosity about its mission. In 1970 the head of the Ministry of Medium Machine Building was charged with designing what the Soviets hoped would be the world’s largest nuclear power plant. Viktor Brukahanov was tapped to build a nuclear power plant in record- dangerous - time. He recruited workers, built a village called Pripyat in Ukraine not far from the reactor site, and filled it with flowers. All of the personnel associated with the project lived there with their families – some 51,300 men, women and children at the start, of whom more than 4,000 were station operators and construction workers. THE EXPLOSION On April 26,1986, Reactor #4 at the Chernobyl plant was due to be tested for its back-up generators. During the test, the operators made some mistakes that caused the core reactivity to increase quickly and could/would eventually cause a meltdown or explosion. The reactor operators tried to fix this by withdrawing control rods from the core so that they could stop the reaction, but instead of stopping it, their actions made things worse and caused an even bigger problem with reactors overheating. The “fix” they chose was to initiate a shutdown sequence. This caused the reactor to suddenly explode, shooting concrete and metal, and creating seven tons of radioactive dust particles. Even more terrifying, the sudden spike in temperature - to 1,700 degrees centigrade, or 3,092 degrees Fahrenheit, created sufficient radiation output for an explosion caused PAGE 22 | AUGUST // SEPTEMBER 2022
by steam that would throw enough fallout into the atmosphere to make a large part of Europe uninhabitable for 100 years. This fortunately did not happen, and later Gorbachev would brag about the prevention of that event. THE CONSEQUENCES The 4,000+ station operators and construction workers stayed at the plant to take care of essential services and work at the power plant itself. The rest of the residents of Pripyat were to be evacuated. But in a continuation of the haphazard and uncoordinated approach to – well, almost everything related to this power plant – it was a full day and a half after the explosion that 1,225 buses and 250 trucks began to move. And of the 100,000 people evacuated, 5,000 – 6,000 people were “simply lost” – unaccounted for. As for the workers trying to contain the damage, they were initially restricted to a maximum of 12 minutes before they needed to be replaced. In later stages of the clean-up and attempts to prevent further damage, workers were allowed only 2 minutes at a time to be near the radiation. (Dosimeters measured the amount of exposure). Eighteen hundred people were hospitalized, including 445 children. Acute radiation sickness is “a cruel, complex, and poorly understood” affliction, that includes periods of latency where a patient may believe he or she is healed. But it comes back – and radiation burns gradually grow worse. Effects are too horrible to repeat in this review. Deaths began on May 9th. But the authorities ended up saying the final death toll was 31 people. This is absurd, but was justified as those deaths with a direct cause and effect that was provable. This explosion resulted in the permanent relocation of 116,000 people. By the beginning of 1991, as many as 600,000 people had taken part in clean-up work in the radioactive area. As they began to fall ill, the state’s doctors refused to connect their symptoms to the radiation, calling it “ordinary illness.” And the effects don’t go away. By 2005, about 4,000 people who were children at the tine had developed thyroid cancer. Ruthless expedience and a perpetual fear of humiliation were responsible for these grievous actions. The book is difficult, but important to understand in the context of where the world is today with regard to nuclear power or weapons.

The Kathy B. Davis Foundation’s Memorial Golf Tournament returns to Lake Arrowhead Yacht and Country Club’s Highlands Course on Friday, September 2, 2022, with a 7:30 a.m. registration and an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. This year marks the fifth anniversary of this popular event and will be the only 2022 fundraiser held to support the foundation’s philanthropic efforts on behalf of the special-needs community in Cherokee County. Goshen Valley provides hope and healing to foster youth and vulnerable families to cultivate personal healing and generational change. Their mission is to be the leading provider of trauma-responsive, faith-based services for children, youth and families predicated upon best and most promising practices to create relational environments that evoke peace and purpose in self and others. Each year, Goshen Valley has increased the average number of at-risk youths served per day, currently nearly 100 per day per calendar year; they have served over 700 foster youth, seen 8 young men enter the armed forces, have celebrated 51 high school graduations, have facilitated over 30 adoptions and have seen countless families restored through their programs.

The FCA is an interdenominational Christian sports ministry with a mission to see the world impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes, primarily by working to lead every coach and athlete into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His church. In each practice, huddle and game-day play, the FCA seeks to make disciples through their methods of engaging, equipping and empowering coaches and athletes to know and grow in Christ and lead others to do the same. Golfing Fore Children’s contributions have directly helped the FCA ministry at two high schools in Cherokee County (Cherokee and Riverwood). Hundreds of students on the football, lacrosse, baseball and basketball teams are reached through witnessing, character building sessions, one-on-one praise sessions and weekly bible studies. At Cherokee County School the entire football team will be attending THE premiere FCA camp this summer at the University of West Georgia. There the coaches and athletes will work on perfecting their craft, and participating in break-out sessions to dive deeper in their faith; some hearing the Gospel for the very first time. —————————————————————MUST MINISTRIES——————————————————————
MUST brings people together to minister to others with compassion and love. Their mission is to serve our neighbors in need in the community and in doing so, transform the lives and communities in response to Christ’s call. MUST has a vision to become Georgia’s most respected servant leader— restoring lives one person and one community at a time. The MUST Ministries Client Services in Cherokee County offer food, housing programs, workforce development and clothing, as well as Breads and Sweets. Clients participate in a variety of classes in the classroom and the computer lab. Over 3,400 people were served from July 2020 to June 2021 alone; more than 285,000 lbs of food was distributed and they saw a 124% increase in housing clients. Over 500 people were provided job assistance and 300 placed in stable jobs. ——–———STUDENT SERVICES FOR CHEROKEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT (CCSD)——————
CCSD is a high performing public school system dedicated to “educating the emerging generation” with 40 schools and centers, 4,800 employees and more than 47,000 students—with many families and children in need. Student Services provides resources for homeless children and youth as well as students in foster care throughout Cherokee County. Student Services for CCSD is able to provide specific needs for the child and the family, in order to maintain the child in the school learning environment. For instance, a child and/or family may receive grocery cards for those families who have no food for the weekend. Roughly one-third of children are in supplemental lunch programs but have no weekend food.

community interest KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS PATRIOTIC FLAG PROGRAM Lake Arrowhead to participate in Knights of Columbus Patriotic Flag Program by placing American Flags (3’ X 5’) on a 10’ pole at both entrances and the Clubhouse. The flags will be placed a day or two prior to the seven flag days and picked up one or two days following. Those flag days are Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, September 11 and Veterans Day. The Knights of Columbus is an international men’s charitable organization with the Etowah Council 12826 serving the Canton area. The Etowah Council supports/donates to the following local organizations such as Angel House, Homeless Veterans, Wheelchairs for Vets, Disabled Veterans, American Legion, MUST Ministries, provides Coats for Kids at local elementary schools, the Georgia Special Olympics, Woodstock HS Band and the Boy Scouts. The Patriotic Flag Program will be offered initially to Lake Arrowhead residents with curbs. Shown below is information on how you can participate in the program by having flag(s) placed in your yard for a $50. per flag donation per year.
