This is an integral process in place for checking to be sure all content received has been considered for each particular month's publication. Items sent to any other email address will possibly be omitted. Note that Lake Arrowhead Living is published monthly (12 issues per year) in an overlapping format that covers 2 months at a time. Magazines generally arrive in mailboxes around mid-month. For example, the June/July issue will promote late June and July events and will feature articles submitted by May 10th covering happenings that took place in April and May. New content is always due by the 10th of each month to be published in the next month's issue on the following schedule. Please note that the 10th is a HARD deadline for all content unless previously discussed and planned with the layout designer. This means that if you do not have a standing dedicated section of the magazine, your content is considered "new" and the deadline of the 10th applies. Lake Arrowhead Church was holding its first Annual Golfing Fore Children Charity Tournament. Over the years, many children’s charities have benefited from the proceeds. The secret to the success lies right here in the Lake Arrowhead community.

Day’s Chevrolet of Jasper and Shottenkirk Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram (Shottenkirk) of Canton each provided a Hole-in-One sponsorship. One on Hole 13 and the other on Hole 17. Both Andrew Diemer of Day’s Chevrolet and David Booth of Shottenkirk were enthusiastic contributors to Golfing Fore Children. Each of these gentleman care deeply about their community and give back by helping the organizations that are equipped to help at-risk children. It is comforting to know we have such leaders and businesses who are so willing to give back and we are so grateful for their support. Through the corporate leadership of these companies, we were able to draw in 128 golfers. Please be reminded that and all the money raised from Golfing Fore Children goes to the charitable organizations we support. DEAR LAKE ARROWHEAD COMMUNITY: Lake Arrowhead Church announced raised over $88,000 for at the 32nd annual Golfing Fore Children tournament held on September 24. This is a significant increase over the contributions raised in previous years. On behalf of Marcia Terry (co-chair) and myself, we wish to express our sincere gratitude to the Lake Arrowhead community for your continued support. This is a very special community, full of care, love, and a genuine interest in helping the at-risk children in our community. The Church gives 100% of the funds raised to four local children’s organizations described in the following article. The four organizations are well equipped to help children in crisis and provide opportunity to change the trajectory of their young lives. As a community, we should feel good that so many kids will be helped through our gifts. A special thanks to the many donors, hole-in-one sponsors – Day’s Chevrolet of Jasper, Shottenkirk of Canton, and Dixon Golf ($1,000 American Express Card), the 10 Gold Sponsors, 10 Corporate sponsors, 115 hole sponsors, and 128 golfers. In addition, we had over 30 volunteers that made the tournament run smoothly and successfully. There were numerous heart-felt moments for me - the in-memoriam signs honoring those recently passed in our community, getting the Golfing Fore Children baseball caps celebrating 32 years of giving to the kids, having the honor of Jim Bennett playing in my foursome, witnessing all the smiling faces, and the unity of all the volunteers working together for such a great cause. Thanks to Uel Kemp and Eddie Carlson for managing and hosting Golfing Fore Children at the beautiful Lake Arrowhead (Highlands) Golf Course and Clubhouse. During these trying times of Covid and supply chain shortages, Uel found a way to accommodate so many golfers. FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES (FCA)
Goshen Valley provides hope and healing to foster youth and vulnerable families to cultivate personal healing and generational Change. Their mission is to be the leading provider of trauma-responsive, faith-based services for children, youth and families predicated upon best and most promising practices - to create relational environments that evoke peace and purpose in self and others.
The FCA is an interdenominational Christian sports ministry with a mission to see the world impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes, primarily by working to lead every coach and athlete into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His church.
Each year, Goshen Valley has increased the average number of at-risk youths served per day, currently nearly 100 per day per calendar year: they have served over 700 foster youth, seen 8 young men enter the armed forces, have celebrated 51 high school graduations, have facilitated over 30 adoptions and have seen countless families restored through their programs. MUST Staff Organizing Clothing Donations for Families in Cherokee County
feature article The MUST Ministries Client Services in Cherokee County offer food, housing programs, workforce development and clothing, as well as Breads & Sweets. Clients participate in a variety of classes in the classroom and the computer lab, both staffed by volunteers and staff. The local impact alone helps so many people in and around our local community: families, children, individuals - having served 3,400+ people from July 2020 to June 2021 alone, distributed more than 285,000 lbs. of food from July 2020 - June 2021, managing a 124% increase in housing clients among all programs compared to the 16% increase at the beginning of the pandemic, as well as having worked with over 500 people on job assistance last year, placing more than 300 in stable jobs and returning more than $8.5 million to the local economy. THE CHEROKEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT (CCSD) CCSD is a high-performing public-school system dedicated to “educating the emerging generation” with 40 schools and centers, 4,800 employees and more than 47,000 students with many families and children in need. Student Services supports school counselors, social workers, and nurses across the district. Services and resources for homeless children and youth as well as students in foster care are coordinated in Student Services. CCSD is able to provide in specific needs for the child and,
sometimes, the family in order to maintain the child in the school learning environment. For instance, a child and/or family may receive: • Electric payment if a home has no electricity because a parent cannot pay this bill. No child can learn in a home with no electricity. • Gas cards for those families evicted from their home and have moved to another school area with family or friend – these cards enable the family to drive the child to their “home” school and not have to change to a different learning environment • Grocery cards for those families who have no food for the weekend. Roughly one-third of children are in supplemental lunch programs but have no weekend food. Starting the week hungry does not avail the child to good learning. • Assist those children who are homeless and living in their family cars. Unfortunately, this is often “not seen” by many but it is a fact in Cherokee. • Social and emotional learning and suicide prevention initiatives CCSD is committed to educating the emerging generation through learning environments designed to increase the performance of all students. golf news 2021 LAKE ARROWHEAD – BRIDGEMILL ATHLETIC CLUB CHALLENGE CUP Modeled after the Ryder Cup between U.S. and European golf professionals, the Lake Arrowhead/Bridgemill Athletic Club Challenge Cup was started 6 years ago. The event was planned by the Men’s Golf Association leaders and the Golf Professionals of both clubs. The intent of the event was to create a fun way for both clubs to interact and have a friendly rivalry. The participants for each team are selected based on their play throughout the year with each club’s respective MGA tournaments. Each club has 22 players on their team including 1 golf professional from each club. The Lake Arrowhead team consisted of: Jeff Cuipak – Co-Captain, Pat Farrelly – CoCaptain, Uel Kemp – Golf Professional, Lee Huebner, Brad Jones, Jeff Bedard, Al Schimmelman, Bill Maynard, Craig Glasgow, Mel Standley, Sandy Reynolds, Dean LeBlanc, Brian Schell, Sean Webb, T.C. Chapman, Rex Wallace, David Gillard, Shane Benefield, Dave Davis, Paul Bolding, Bud Milam, and Vic Martin. The teams play for a total of 55 points. The matches have been very close for the first five years with only one event having a spread of 3 points. The other four matches were won by one point! This year, round one was played at Bridgemill Athletic Club on Saturday, October 16th and round two was played here at Lake Arrowhead on Sunday the 17th. There are four fun formats in the tournament: Four Ball, or Best Ball; Foursomes or Alternate Shot, also known as Greensomes;

Scramble, and Singles. The first nine holes on Saturday were Best Ball. In this format, two players comprise a team, while each player plays their own ball, and the one lowest score on the hole is their team score. The back nine was Foursomes. In this format, both players hit their tee shot, then the team selects the best drive and alternates hitting the next shot until the ball is holed out. Each match is worth one point with ties receiving ½ point each. Day one saw Bridgemill jump out to a commanding 7½ to 3½ point lead in the Four Ball format. The Lake Arrowhead team came roaring back with a 7½ to 3½ haul in the Foursome format! The net result was a tie at 11 points each, making Sunday’s play at Lake Arrowhead even more tense than usual. Round two was played as a Scramble on the front nine. During a Scramble, both players hit a shot, pick the best one, and each player hits the next shot from that spot. This process is repeated until the ball is holed out. The back nine is Singles--one player versus another player. There are 22 points available in this format. The front nine results were Lake Arrowhead 6 – Bridgemill 5, for a 1 point lead heading into singles. Lake Arrowhead dominated the singles format with a 16 – 6 victory! The final result was Lake Arrowhead 33 – Bridgemill 22! Congratulations to all players and thank you to the staff at Lake Arrowhead and Bridgemill Athletic Club for their hard work to make the match a success.

by Jan Garbiel Usually, this column is an update on the last LGA Play Event with photos of the group and the winners for the event. Today, it is a change-up and I hope that you won’t be bored. Our summer league events are also over. We have one more in October and then it is our “Fall Back ‘til Spring” Fall Business Meeting. Where has the summer gone? How about looking back? It was a come-back year the Lake Arrowhead Ladies Golf League. Our membership bounced back to 42 members which was just shy of our post Covid membership of 50. Our charity golf tournament for Angel House of North Georgia was a rousing success with the LGA/MGA presenting Angel House Director, Susan Worsley, with a check for $22,222. Participation in our weekly play days and monthly play events increased from past years. So much so we had to add extra tee times. We can close out the year knowing that it was a great year.
But it isn’t time to put away those clubs. The days are gorgeous, the colors of fall are beginning to show themselves and with the perfect temperatures let’s pay some golf. It’s time to head out to the fairways and enjoy the beautiful Lake Arrowhead course. The LGA will be celebrating the end of the summer season with it’s “Fall Back ‘til Spring” Business Meeting November 10th with presentation of awards and announcing plans for the 2022 season. We would like to invite ladies interested in playing golf with our league to join us for this meeting. The LALGA is open to women 18 years and older and of all skill levels. We offer play days on Mondays and Thursdays plus a special event each month from March through October. It is a great opportunity to meet new friends, enjoy the game of golf and have fun playing the game! To continue our look back, here are some fun photos from our league.

The holidays are upon us-hooray. Please furnish your guest lists a few days before your event to one of our gates and we will take a copy to the other gate. This will ensure your guests will have a pass to enter our community in a timely manner. Since our road system is a challenge on a good day, please observe our 25 MPH speed limit protecting your family and others including our wildlife- 4 legged. We have seen snow in December so now is the time to place a blanket, etc. in your vehicle. Stock up on can goods for your home, an independent cooking source i.e. propane cooking plate, several good books and games for the kids. Our crime rate is low. During the holiday season we have deliveries to our home which can create a crime of opportunity so be vigilante. Report any suspicious activity or vehicles to Cherokee 911 or their nonemergency number 678-493-4080, and L.A. Security. Keep any valuables out of sight in your vehicle at home or away.

FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore. PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind. ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion. NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks. NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks. BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks. PETS Pets are not allowed on the Marina Pavilion.

Short-term property rentals (less than 6 months) are strictly prohibited in both Phase II and Phase III of Lake Arrowhead. The maximum number of occupants should be restricted to no more than two individuals per bedroom. 2.
Short-term rentals should be registered with LA Security gate they intend to enter, and identified as short-term rentals so that the appropriate identification may be provided at check-in a. Amenity use cards, identifying renters and associated unit address b. Vehicle “hang tag” for vehicles
3. All rental agreements should include an acknowledgement that renters have received and agree to abide by the Lake Arrowhead Rules and Regulations a. If boat usage is included with the rental of the home, a printed copy of the lake rules and restrictions should be included with the rental agreement, a copy should be left in the home, and a laminated copy should be placed in the boat and/or attached to the boat key b. Violations of the lake rules and regulations may result in revocation of the issued boat permit and result in suspension of lake access privileges 4. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of guests and renters of their home and violations of the Covenants or Rules and Regulations will typically be handled in the following manner: a. 1st infraction – issuance of written warning to homeowner b. 2nd infraction – 30-day suspension of common property access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters c. 3rd infraction – 12-month suspension of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters d. 4th infraction – permanent loss of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters e. Addition steps may be taken depending on the nature of the infraction, including contacting the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department or taking additional legal to enforce the community governing documents f. Common property damage by renters, if applicable, will be levied against the lot owner g. Egregious infractions may result in immediate suspension of common property access and privileges or other sanctions

ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.
NARROWS MARINA PARKING Parking in the Narrows Marina parking lot is reserved for slip holders only. Slip holders are requested to park only one vehicle in the parking lot. Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter – Tom Franklin. New York: HarperCollins, 2010. In Mississippi, many kids learn to spell their home state this way: “M I Crooked Letter Crooked Letter I, Crooked Letter Crooked Letter I, Humpback Humpback I.” In Tom Franklin’s novel, crookedness is woven throughout the novel, especially between former childhood friends, Larry Ott and Silas Jones. Larry was a poor white kid living out in the country and Sylas a black kid living in a cabin with his single mother. They were friends – not the type of friend you admit to having, but someone for companionship. When both were in high school (no longer friends but mere acquaintances), a girl in their class went missing and Larry was the last person to see her. The town of Chabot believes Larry killed her. No proof, but in a small town, he’s as good as guilty. Twenty-five years later, he lives a lonely, solitary life – a gentle weirdo who feeds his chickens and prays each day for God to bring him just one friend. But now, another girl is missing, and Larry (now called Scary Larry) is again the suspect, while Silas (who goes by 32, the number on his high school jersey) is the cop investigating the disappearance. As William Faulkner once said about the South, “The past is never dead. It is not even the past.” Tom Franklin proves this statement true in the subtle way he weaves the past and present together. “Time packs new years over old ones,” he says, “but how those old years are still here, like the earliest, tightest rings centering a tree, the most hidden, enclosed in darkness and shielded from weather.” Franklin also knows how to start a book in one powerful sentence: “The Rutherford girl had been missing for eight days when Larry Ott returned home and found a monster waiting in his house.” With buzzards circling overhead and air as thick as kudzu choking one’s breath, Constable 32 tries to solve the girl’s disappearance while Larry lies unconscious in the hospital with a bullet lodged near his heart. To solve the case, 32 must delve into the past, which Franklin handles smoothly, giving readers a glimpse of how miserable life can be for a kid who is different. Even Larry’s father, a mechanic, treated him as an undesirable. “You got it easy. Momma’s boy reading the livelong day. Watch your cartoons, play with your dolls, read your funny books. But you can’t unscrew a god dang bolt to save your life, can't charge a dad blame battery." In some ways, growing up in the South was easier for black Silas because he was good at sports than for white Larry who liked snakes and books.
While “Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter” is categorized as a crime story – the hunt for an assumed dead girl and a suspected attempted murderer – the novel is more an examination of the power of guilt and the ache of loneliness. The disappearance of the two girls twenty-five years apart seems secondary to the plot when compared to the secret histories of Larry and Silas. The adult Silas knows that had he made just one small effort to acknowledge Larry as a friend way back then, the course of events would have been radically different. And if adult Larry still didn’t need a friend so badly that he befriends a strange boy who idolizes him because he believes Larry did kill that girl . . . Faulkner’s comment about the past continues like this: “All of us labor in webs spun long before we were born, webs of heredity and environment, of desire and consequence, of history and eternity. Haunted by wrong turns and roads not taken, we pursue images perceived as new but whose providence dates to the dim dramas of childhood, which are themselves but ripples of consequence echoing down the generations.” Larry and Silas would probably say “Amen.”
MY WINE RECOMMENDATION Before you say, “But I don’t like wines made from Muscadine grapes,” consider a dry red wine from Old South Winery in Natchez, MS. Sure, they make some sweet ones too, but Dry Noble is a dusty dry wine without a drop of sugar. The secret, they say, is aging the wine in stainless steel tanks, which makes controlling the sweetness easier. A dry red pair well with beef, in fact, you can even tenderize a brisket with it. $15
