The Lake Arrowhead LGA/MGA finally closed the books on the 9th Annual Angel House Charity Golf Event in late July. Susan Worsley, Executive Director / CEO for North Georgia Angel House, Inc. accepted the donation of $22,000 at a luncheon hosted by the LGA/MGA Charity Event Planning Committee at the Lake Arrowhead Clubhouse. In accepting the check, Susan shared with the committee how the funds will be allocated and hoped that we would share this information with our community that so generously donated to the event. Susan told us the following: “We are adding five tiny homes to our campus for ages 18-21. Currently, these girls live out in town. Our cost is $128,000 toward a $270,000 anticipated cost. The reduced rate is through the involvement of HomeAid, Taylor Morrison and New River Builders. We will apply these funds to this project! We so appreciate the investment you make in us! We cannot wait to show you the finished houses. She also mentioned that current prices for building materials was forcing them to be very frugal with their available funds and they have been able to use materials such as 2X4’s from a house that was recently demolished on their property to make room for the tiny homes. We are so glad that the funds we raised with our event are going to play a part in providing additional housing for these girls and an environment where they can have the support from Susan and her team. Again, the LGA/ MGA wants to thank our corporate sponsors, family sponsors, fellow golfers and the volunteers that helped us make this a very successful event.

golf news 2021 BRIMMER HIGHLANDS CUP After the completion of 50 matches over two days, the teams were separated by one point! The Brimmer Highlands Cup is an event dreamed up by Ward Brimmer and a few other golfers 13 years ago to spice up Lake Arrowhead’s golfing experience through some good natured competition among Golf Club members. Three golf members have participated in all 13 events, Mike Johnson, Sandy Reynolds, and Rick Salese. Modeled after the Ryder Cup between U.S. and European golf professionals, the Brimmer Highlands Cup has two captains who are responsible for selecting team members, setting tournament rules, and working with Golf Club management on Tournament details. This year the Red Team captain was Ray Champitto and the Blue Team captain was Craig Glasgow. Each team included 20 members. This year’s event was dedicated to 3 members that we lost this year. Bob Bettencourt, Chris Benway, and Eben Williams. We are all saddened by the loss of these three fine gentlemen, they are gone but not forgotten. Matches on the first day of competition were played by 2-person teams in three different formats – best ball, alternate shot, and scramble. The Red Team ended the first day of competition with a 16.5-13.5 lead. Second day matches were all singles. The Blue team rallied back with second day results of 12 Blue to 8 Red resulting in a one point win by the Blue team. In what was obviously a very competitive event, the Blue Team earned bragging rights for the sixth year in a row. Special thanks to all the staff in the Pro Shop and The Highlands Grill for all they did to help make the Highlands Cup a successful and fun event.

by Jan Garbiel It was “Christmas in July” for the Lake Arrowhead Ladies Golf Association July Golf Event. “Christmas in July” is an intentionally transparent excuse to have a party or if you are a Hallmark Channel fan, to preview their newest Christmas movies of the year. For the LGA, it is an opportunity for us to give much needed items to our charity Angel House of North Georgia. This year we decided to provide pillows and ankle socks for the girls. The weather was beautiful for a July day and the ladies decorated their carts with Christmas wreaths and tinsel. Fifteen ladies signed up for the event, so it was a perfect opportunity for a three-person 18-hole scramble. To add a hint of Christmas to the event, each lady was given a red ball to use for play. Those that were able to keep their ball for the entire play were entered into a drawing for a prize. Everyone had fun with the format and tired hard to keep their red ball for 18 holes. There were five “keepers” of red balls when we returned to the clubhouse for lunch and the posting of scores. After enjoying the club’s lunch specials and Christmas cookies provided by Arra Bolding from Bananas + Beehives in Canton, winners were announced and prizes awarded. The winning teams for the day were: 1st Place: Eleanor Gibbons, Maureen McGuire, Martha Elkins 2nd Place: Cheryl Davis, Patti Adams, Kim Brophy 3rd Place: Joan Eberhardt, Grace Kreft, Kim Brophy Marti Webb was the winner in the drawing for “Red Ball Keeper” Congratulations to the winners and a big thanks for the donations to Angel House. We just had to determine who had the largest car to deliver the pillows to Angel House.

HOMELESS VETERANS GOLF EVENT— PROGRAM GUIDE Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Program

7th Annual Homeless Veteran Charity Golf Event set for Friday October 22nd at Lake Arrowhead Highlands Course

The 7th annual Charity Homeless Veterans Golf Outing is set for this fall at the Lake Arrowhead Highlands Golf Course in Waleska, Ga. The shotgun start event will be held on Friday the 22nd of October and will have a 4 person team scramble format. The event is put on by the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans program (CCHVP) with support from local veterans and volunteers. 100% of the proceeds of the golf outing goes to support the various programs of the CCHVP and 100% of the monies spent by the CCVHP stays in Cherokee County. Homeless Veteran Situation in Georgia today— In last November’s Housing and Urban Development report to Congress, the State of Georgia was identified as lagging in several areas as it relates to Homeless Veterans to include: Updates to Federal and State numbers were not available for 2020 due to COVID. As of 2019: 



State of Georgia ranks 3rd among states for the largest number of homeless veterans in the Balance of State homeless areas (rural areas which make us 152 of the 158 counties in Georgia) State of Georgia ranks 3rd behind Hawaii and Oregon with the highest rate of unsheltered homeless veterans in the nation. Georgia has a 63.1% rate of unsheltered vs sheltered homeless veterans within the Balance of State Continuum of Care (COC).



Cherokee County ranks #2 in total homeless persons in the Balance of State. Bibb County ranks #1.



Cherokee County does not qualify for VASH or Per Diem housing support for Veterans. We do qualify for SSVF Grants for Veterans with families with children under 17. It typically takes up to 12 weeks to get into the SSVF program.



TRIBUTE RIDGE HONOR SOMEONE YOU LOVE OR WHO SERVED IN THE MILITARY This year, as part of the Cherokee County Homeless Veteran Golf Program (CCHVP) golf event and in celebration of Veterans Day, we are looking to fill this ridge with signs commemorating a loved one, living or deceased, Veteran or non-Veteran. We are creating a special sign that you can customize with up to three lines of 22 characters for creating a personalized message. In addition there is a logo space that can be added that can identify the organization that your loved one was part of. If your loved one is/was a Veteran this logo field can represent the branch of service where your loved one served, i.e. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard, WWII Army Air Corps, etc. For other professions/organizations, such as, Parent, Grandparent, Policeman, Fireman, Teacher, Rotary, Lions Club, or something else, you can fill in the “OTHER” field with this information and we will select an appropriate logo to have displayed in this area.

All signs ordered will be placed on “Tribute Ridge” during the CCHVP golf event on Friday October 22nd, 2021 at the Lake Arrowhead Highlands Golf Course in Waleska. Once the event is over, all signs can be picked up and taken home to be displayed in your front yard on Veterans Day or any other special occasion. NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks. NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks. BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks. PETS Pets are not allowed on the Marina Pavilion.

WELCOME NEW OWNERS

In order to protect and preserve the residential character, property values, and enjoyment of all homeowners within the Lake Arrowhead community, please observe the following guidelines for relative to short-term property rentals of Lake Arrowhead Phase I units. 1. Short-term property rentals (less than 6 months) are strictly prohibited in both Phase II and Phase III of Lake Arrowhead. The maximum number of occupants should be restricted to no more than two individuals per bedroom. 2.

Short-term rentals should be registered with LA Security gate they intend to enter, and identified as short-term rentals so that the appropriate identification may be provided at check-in a. Amenity use cards, identifying renters and associated unit address b. Vehicle “hang tag” for vehicles

3. All rental agreements should include an acknowledgement that renters have received and agree to abide by the Lake Arrowhead Rules and Regulations a. If boat usage is included with the rental of the home, a printed copy of the lake rules and restrictions should be included with the rental agreement, a copy should be left in the home, and a laminated copy should be placed in the boat and/or attached to the boat key b. Violations of the lake rules and regulations may result in revocation of the issued boat permit and result in suspension of lake access privileges 4. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of guests and renters of their home and violations of the Covenants or Rules and Regulations will typically be handled in the following manner: a. 1st infraction – issuance of written warning to homeowner b. 2nd infraction – 30-day suspension of common property access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters c. 3rd infraction – 12-month suspension of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters d. 4th infraction – permanent loss of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters e. Addition steps may be taken depending on the nature of the infraction, including contacting the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department or taking additional legal to enforce the community governing documents f. Common property damage by renters, if applicable, will be levied against the lot owner g. Egregious infractions may result in immediate suspension of common property access and privileges or other sanctions 5.

“Party Houses” are strictly prohibited and deemed a nuisance and violation of the Lake Arrowhead Covenants, Article III, Section 19. Party Houses are also prohibited by popular short-term rental companies (Airbnb and VRBO) and nuisance properties will be reported to the appropriate listing entity.

ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.

PICKLEBALL AT LAKE ARROWHEAD by Bill Hess Lake ArrowHead is now home to a first class pickleball facility. This five-court facility, located in the Swim, Pickleball and Tennis Complex on Red Cloud Drive, was built on the site of two tennis courts that had been abandoned for over twenty years. Several very active groups of pickleball players play daily on these courts. One group of intermediate and advanced players play on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday late afternoons, and sometimes on Saturday morning. Another group of novice and intermediate players play on Monday and Saturday mornings and Wednesday afternoon. In addition, there are smaller groups who play at various time during the week. Great Circle – Maggie Shipstead. New York: Alfred A Knopf, 2021 In geography, a Great Circle is the largest possible circle that can be drawn around a sphere, such as the earth’s equator which divides the planet into two hemispheres or a line that connects the North and South poles, dividing the earth into halves. Author Maggie Shipstead uses this image both literally and metaphorically in her most recent novel. Set across two timelines, her story follows the lives of two young women – Marian Graves, a brash, independent female who becomes a pilot in the early twentieth century; and Hadley Jones, a child-star, headline-grabbing actress in modern day Hollywood who is cast to portray Marian in a Hollywood film. To connect these two lives requires a talented writer and a patient reader, as Shipstead’s tale is epic and not for everyone. But for those who like a story steeped in setting and filled with unique characters plus a surprise ending, Great Circle is the perfect read. Working from the idea of a world divided into halves, Marian and her twin brother grow up parentless in unspoiled Montana. (Shipstead provides a robust background to their parentage that is too unusual to summarize here.) Cared for by their alcoholic uncle, the twins are free to roam the countryside along with their best friend Caleb. “They do not always go to school,” Shipstead notes. “If it is a splendidly sunny day or an enticingly snowy one, they might wander away somewhere else.” One day they meet two barnstormers. For Marian, it is love at first propeller crank. For the rest of her life, and for the rest of the novel, she relentlessly pursues her destiny in the air, including flying a Great Circle. Will she achieve her dream or disappear like the famous Amelia Earhart? Read on. In 21st century Hollywood, parentless Hadley Jones is trying to salvage her career after the paparazzi catch her cheating on her boyfriend (horror!), causing her to lose a plum role in a mega movie series. (Again, a life divided into two parts after her parents died in a plane crash and now after becoming the poster child for bad behavior.) She desperately needs the role of Marian as much as Marian needs to fly. “I’m determined to be Marian,” muses Hadley. “I need the relief of someone who wasn’t afraid.” (The chapters set in Hollywood depict a lifestyle that pales those lived by Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears.)

Spanning 100 years of history between these two women, Shipstead pens a story that will have the reader factchecking history, especially the role of women flyers during WWII. Eventually the story cumulates in Marian’s attempt to circumnavigate the earth, North to South. (Prepare for a nail biter!) Meanwhile, back in Hollywood, Hadley delves deeper into the true nature of the woman she portrays on screen. When she’s not in the air, the other half of Marian’s life is devoted to her twin brother Jamie. While she is all nerve and ambition, he is tenderhearted and artistic. His struggles to define himself as a person and an artist are just as emotionally dramatic and engaging as his sister’s struggles to fly. In fact, his story at times rivals hers, especially when he becomes a wartime artist charged with capturing the reality of WWII in the South Pacific. (For more on this little-known true endeavor, watch the PBS documentary They Drew Fire.) From shipwrecks to bootleggers to world wars to crash landings to red herrings and to someone known as “Sitting-in-the-Water-Grizzly,” Shipstead’s novel is an engaging read – perfect for a cross-Atlanta trip or a “staycation.” MY WINE RECOMMENDATION While Marion’s drink of choice is more bootleg whisky than fine wine, her home state of Montana boasts several awardwinning vineyards. Mission Mountain Winery in Dayton, Montana, is a family-owned winery located on the West Shore of Flathead Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. Their Monster Red in an international gold medal winner. Made from a hardy blend of Merlot and Cabernet and aged 12 month in French and American oak barrels, the wine is rich and complex with a deep taste of black cherry. It pairs well with steaks, lasagna or even a juicy cheeseburger. $19
