golf news 2021 MEMBER – MEMBER On July 18th & 18th, 44 Lake Arrowhead golf members played in the 2021 Member – Member Golf Tournament. Always competitive, this year’s tournament was no exception. Pat Farrelly and Lee Heubner won the low gross score honors! Brian Schell and Dave Davis won the overall low net score. The Member – Member Golf Tournament is an annual event where golf club members form 2-person teams to compete for trophies and prizes plus the honor of being named Tournament Champions for the year. The tournament format is known by several names (four ball, best ball, and better ball) but whatever it is called, it essentially requires each team member to play their own ball. At the end of each hole, the lowest individual score is recorded as the team score. This year’s tournament was divided into 4 flights: First, Second, Third and Ladies. golf news RED, WHITE & BLUE SCRAMBLE JULY 4TH Red, White, and Blue in this instance had a dual meaning. Besides representing Independence Day and our nation’s flag, it was an integral part of the tournament rules. As many of you know, the Lake Arrowhead Golf Course has five sets of tees, three of which are red, white, and blue. The closest (and typically easiest) are the red tees and the longest (and typically the hardest) are the blue tees. In between are the white tees. To start the tournament, each of the teams teed off from the white tees. If the team made a par, it continued to play from the white tees on the next hole. However, if the team made a birdie, it moved back to the harder blue tees on the next hole: if the team made a bogey, it moved up to the easier red tees. This process continued throughout the tournament. The tournament field was divided into four flights based on each team’s score. Pro Shop gift certificates were then awarded to each member of the top two teams in each flight. Ties were broken with a scorecard playoff starting on hole 18. The winners were: FLIGHT

by Jan Garbiel The Lake Arrowhead LGA session is in full swing (pardon the play on words) with the Angel House Charity Golf Event behind us. We can look forward to our weekly play days on Monday and Thursday and our once a month play events. The theme of our June play event was “Waving the Flag for a Hole in One”. We wanted to pay honor to Flag Day June 14th and hoping that maybe with some luck we would have a Hole in One for the day. Unfortunately, no one made that elusive shot but the group of 16 ladies managed to post a few birdies. The format of play for the day was a person scramble. The helped to speed up play as the temperatures rose that June morning. Following play, all the ladies headed to the club restaurant for air conditioning, a cold drink and lunch. Chef Jason and his staff provide that for us with cool salads and caprese sandwiches and lots of iced water and tea.

The scores were close but the following walked away with the prize money for the day. Congratulations to our winners for the day: First Place: Eleanor Gibbons and Ruth Nunes Second Place: Marti Webb and Cindy Rincon Third Place: Paula Hall and Patti Adams To finish off the month of June, a group of 6 LGA Members attended the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Golf Course. They had a great time watching the top lady golfers show them how it’s done. We are all looking forward to our July Play event which will be “Christmas in July”. Each player will bring a gift of a bed pillow for the girls at Angel House. And as always, we invite other ladies to join our league for the fun and friendship of playing golf!

HOMELESS VETERANS GOLF EVENT— PROGRAM GUIDE Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Program

7th Annual Homeless Veteran Charity Golf Event set for Friday October 22nd at Lake Arrowhead Highlands Course
The 7th annual Charity Homeless Veterans Golf Outing is set for this fall at the Lake Arrowhead Highlands Golf Course in Waleska, Ga. The shotgun start event will be held on Friday the 22nd of October and will have a 4 person team scramble format. The event is put on by the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans program (CCHVP) with support from local veterans and volunteers. 100% of the proceeds of the golf outing goes to support the various programs of the CCHVP and 100% of the monies spent by the CCVHP stays in Cherokee County. Homeless Veteran Situation in Georgia today— In last November’s Housing and Urban Development report to Congress, the State of Georgia was identified as lagging in several areas as it relates to Homeless Veterans to include: Updates to Federal and State numbers were not available for 2020 due to COVID. As of 2019:
State of Georgia ranks 3rd among states for the largest number of homeless veterans in the Balance of State homeless areas (rural areas which make us 152 of the 158 counties in Georgia) State of Georgia ranks 3rd behind Hawaii and Oregon with the highest rate of unsheltered homeless veterans in the nation. Georgia has a 63.1% rate of unsheltered vs sheltered homeless veterans within the Balance of State Continuum of Care (COC).
Cherokee County ranks #2 in total homeless persons in the Balance of State. Bibb County ranks #1.
Cherokee County does not qualify for VASH or Per Diem housing support for Veterans. We do qualify for SSVF Grants for Veterans with families with children under 17. It typically takes up to 12 weeks to get into the SSVF program.

TRIBUTE RIDGE HONOR SOMEONE YOU LOVE OR WHO SERVED IN THE MILITARY This year, as part of the Cherokee County Homeless Veteran Golf Program (CCHVP) golf event and in celebration of Veterans Day, we are looking to fill this ridge with signs commemorating a loved one, living or deceased, Veteran or non-Veteran. We are creating a special sign that you can customize with up to three lines of 22 characters for creating a personalized message. In addition there is a logo space that can be added that can identify the organization that your loved one was part of. If your loved one is/was a Veteran this logo field can represent the branch of service where your loved one served, i.e. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard, WWII Army Air Corps, etc. For other professions/organizations, such as, Parent, Grandparent, Policeman, Fireman, Teacher, Rotary, Lions Club, or something else, you can fill in the “OTHER” field with this information and we will select an appropriate logo to have displayed in this area.
All signs ordered will be placed on “Tribute Ridge” during the CCHVP golf event on Friday October 22nd, 2021 at the Lake Arrowhead Highlands Golf Course in Waleska. Once the event is over, all signs can be picked up and taken home to be displayed in your front yard on Veterans Day or any other special occasion. Signs are 24”x18” in size and come with an H-stand for inserting the sign into the ground. The signs are made of weatherproof plastic so that they are designed to be placed outside. Printed areas are only done on one side of the sign.
If you are unable to pick up the sign at the golf course, you can pick up the sign the following week at the Thomas M. Brady American Legion Post 45 located at 160 McClure St in Canton, Ga between the hours of 2PM to 5:30 PM Monday-Friday.

NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks. NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks. BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks. PETS Pets are not allowed on the Marina Pavilion.

WELCOME NEW OWNERS
In order to protect and preserve the residential character, property values, and enjoyment of all homeowners within the Lake Arrowhead community, please observe the following guidelines for relative to short-term property rentals of Lake Arrowhead Phase I units. 1. Short-term property rentals (less than 6 months) are strictly prohibited in both Phase II and Phase III of Lake Arrowhead. The maximum number of occupants should be restricted to no more than two individuals per bedroom. 2.
Short-term rentals should be registered with LA Security gate they intend to enter, and identified as short-term rentals so that the appropriate identification may be provided at check-in a. Amenity use cards, identifying renters and associated unit address b. Vehicle “hang tag” for vehicles
3. All rental agreements should include an acknowledgement that renters have received and agree to abide by the Lake Arrowhead Rules and Regulations a. If boat usage is included with the rental of the home, a printed copy of the lake rules and restrictions should be included with the rental agreement, a copy should be left in the home, and a laminated copy should be placed in the boat and/or attached to the boat key b. Violations of the lake rules and regulations may result in revocation of the issued boat permit and result in suspension of lake access privileges 4. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of guests and renters of their home and violations of the Covenants or Rules and Regulations will typically be handled in the following manner: a. 1st infraction – issuance of written warning to homeowner b. 2nd infraction – 30-day suspension of common property access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters c. 3rd infraction – 12-month suspension of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters d. 4th infraction – permanent loss of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters e. Addition steps may be taken depending on the nature of the infraction, including contacting the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department or taking additional legal to enforce the community governing documents f. Common property damage by renters, if applicable, will be levied against the lot owner g. Egregious infractions may result in immediate suspension of common property access and privileges or other sanctions 5.
“Party Houses” are strictly prohibited and deemed a nuisance and violation of the Lake Arrowhead Covenants, Article III, Section 19. Party Houses are also prohibited by popular short-term rental companies (Airbnb and VRBO) and nuisance properties will be reported to the appropriate listing entity.
ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.

sports & fitness PICKLEBALL AND TENNIS FUZZY THOUGHTS by Maury Nunes, Ink-Stained Tennis Wretch As a tennis player have you ever wondered about that fuzz on the tennis ball? Believe it or not, the fuzz is an integral part of the game and without it tennis today would be, well, more like racquetball without walls. [An interesting thought?!?] When tennis was first conceived, back in Renaissance times, various substances were used to make tennis balls; frequently leather bound, filled with, amnong other substances, sand, leaves, sawdust, animal hair, animal intestines (yuk), human hair and plain old dirt. It was not until somebody though of using rubber that the game began to take on its more modern form. But those rubber balls were not uniform nor were they fuzz coated. Initially the balls were plain old India rubber with no coating. Later on they were cloth covered. And after that when the idea of air-filled balls came along for that truer bounce, some were cloth covered and some uncovered. That’s not much more than 100 years ago. The cloth cover in the early part of the 20th Century was often melton, which is a somewhat heavy, dense wool, designed to be durable while cushioning the rubberized bounce from being too volatile. An improvement, but as time went on, not really keeping with other changes in the game’s equipment and surfaces. Enter the fuzz. With the development of synthetic fabrics, often cheaper than that melton wool, they became an interesting alternative for coating the rubberized air-filled, pressurized sphere. Certain grades of nylon seemed superior for their durability and the fuzz concept seemed to work better than a smooth coating. Of course it did, a smooth tire does not grip the road like one with grooves; a fuzzy ball would be less prone to sliding, rather than bouncing. Then in 1972, the International Tennis Federation adopted the fuzzy Optic Yellow ball (yes, that’s a particular shade of yellow) as the standard ball, rather than the white predecessors, because (get this) they showed up better on television. So, in addition to improving the publicity and popularity of the sport through Tv viewership, the fuzzy ball also became the standard for folks like those playing here at Lake Arrowhead. Recently, we’ve seen some variations with more and less heavily fuzzed balls, which do bounce differently than the common denominator ball. It turns out, too, that ITF has actually approved 4 grades of balls, designed to help newbies handle the game: Red balls are oversized and unpressurized (whether all red or half-red). Orange balls are normal size but unpressurized. Green balls are normal size but made with half-pressure. All of these bounce more slowly, due to the low pressure, than the professional’s, fully pressurized balls, but that bounce is still cushioned for trueness with that nylon fuzz. [We should take pride that we play well enough to take on the professionals, at least in balls.] Consistency may be the hobgoblins of small minds, but in tennis a consistent bounce as a function of force with which the ball is hit, is a blessing. September 2nd Dinner Dance Fund Raiser Featuring “The Vintage Vixens” 6pm – 10pm September 2nd We’re back!!!! After more than a year off because of COVID, The Kathy B. Davis Foundation is once again hosting the popular annual Live and Silent Auction Fund Raiser. This year, the event is dedicated to and in honor of the late Eben Williams who played an integral role as a board member and creator of this event. The fund raiser will include a sit down dinner with a choice of entrée: steak, rack of lamb, seafood or chicken, salad, dessert and drink tickets. Music will provided by The Vintage Vixens.
The Vintage Vixens are well known within our community for their rock and roll, blues and Motown music that inspires everyone to get out of their seats and dance. In keeping with our famous Live Auction Extravaganza, the event will feature auctioneer extraordinaire, Maury Nunes and his lovely wife, Ruth. Six special items will be auctioned off during band intermissions. These include vacation trips, art by local well known artists, jewelry and an overnight trip with George and Penny Koebel on their lovely yacht , “The Pengeo” which is docked in Chattanooga. Many interesting silent auction items will be displayed throughout the club house. community interest Kathy and Dave lived in Murfreesboro Tn. for nearly 32 years raising three sons, Chris, Eric and Matt. Eric was born with Down Syndrome. Kathy and Dave made sure that Eric took part in everything his brothers enjoyed both socially and athletically. When Eric aged out of the school system at the age of 22, it became abundantly clear that opportunities for the intellectually/developmentally challenged individuals were very limited. In 2007, Dave and two other parents started L.E.A.R.N. (Life Enrichment & Recreation Network), an organization which quickly grew to involve seven sports, camping trips, job training, dance lessons and a garden club that eventually spawned the Flowers For A Purpose Program. Kathy passed away in November of 2009. In 2011, Dave formed The Kathy B. Davis Foundation, a 501c3 Nonprofit Organization in her honor. Dave and Eric moved to Lake Arrowhead in 2013 to be closer to his other two sons, Matthew , Chris and his family. The programs and organizations we support locally and statewide are Georgia Special Olympics, the annual KBDF Adam Holland Special Education Scholarship, Angels On Horseback in honor of Melissa Hopson , the Adult Disability Medical Services, a medical facility that provides services for the special needs community, and our Flowers For A Purpose Program. The organization also sponsors trips and outings for Hasting Elementary School in Canton and also supports the CCSD Competitive High School Options in Careers and Education (CHOICE) program which focuses on ensuring that Special Education students graduate from high school on time and are prepared for future success.
KBDF Golf Clinic Dave is a Certified Special Olympics Golf Coach and provides certification training for the State of Georgia. Both Eric and Dave have participated in many state and national golf tournaments in Georgia and Tennessee.

This year our foundation is hosting and sponsoring our 2nd Georgia North Regional Special Olympics Golf Tournament on Sept. 13th at the Lake Arrowhead Golf Club. A big THANK YOU to Uel Kemp and his staff who help us successfully run the tournament. These tournaments bring together Special Olympic golfers throughout the state along with unified partners, coaches and volunteers to play competitive golf under Special Olympics rules and guidelines.

Senior Center The program unites people with intellectual developmental challenges in a social setting with senior citizens in community centers and assisted living facilities around Cherokee County. The groups interact and learn how to create bouquets of beautiful flowers. The arrangements are shared with the participants and also delivered to friends in our community to brighten up their day. The Last Train to Key West – Chanel Cleeton. New York: Penguin Random House, 2020. In 1935, the Florida Keys were ground zero for what is now called the Labor Day Hurricane – a Category 5 storm that ranks as the strongest and most deadly one to hit the US. Not only did it destroy massive amounts of property, but it also claimed more than a thousand lives, including at least 400 WWI veterans lured to the Keys during the Great Depression to live in squalid work camps and help build Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railroad. Chanel Cleeton captures the ticking clock of the oncoming storm by following the fates of three women – all victims of forces they cannot control. Think ‘Key Largo meets Casablanca’ for the way Cleeton combines tension, mystery and romance. It’s a perfect combination for a summer read. Helen Berner is nine months pregnant and a waitress at Ruby’s Café located near the Florida East Coast Railway. Ignoring storm warnings, her abusive husband has gone fishing, leaving Helen to weather the storm alone. Enter a kind customer . . . Following the Cuban revolution, Havana-native Mirta Cordero visits the Keys with her husband for their honeymoon before traveling to New York, his hometown. She knows little about him or his businesses. (An arranged marriage. “Money bought him a wife whose family had run on desperate times.”) Will the coming storm destroy their shaky union or cement their love? Elizabeth Preston is a down-on-her-luck New York socialite fleeing her mobster fiancé while searching the Keys for her brother who reportedly lives in the railroad camps. On the train down, she meets a man who sees straight through her facade. Might he be someone she can trust? Despite their damsel-in-destress stereotypes, Cleeton characterizes these three women as strong individuals – women who long to take control of their own lives. Helen expresses this best. “The helplessness is the hardest part, that sensation of being trapped by life, by circumstances and all the things out of your control wearing you down day after day, month after month, year after year. It’s enough to make you want to run away and never look back. It’s enough to make you rail against the world.” Cleeton also writes realistically about the dire situation of the veterans who fought in the Great War, as it was called in the thirties, and are now scratching out a living to make it easy for wealthy people to travel from New York to Havana.
When Elizabeth visits one of the veteran camps hoping to find her brother, she is surrounded by squalor, sickness, despair and disease. “They didn’t want us in Washington,” explains one camp resident to her, “causing trouble, reminding the American public – the voting public – that we weren’t taken care of, that the government hadn’t exactly lived up to its promises. They probably thought the Keys were far enough away to send us so everyone would forget about us.” When the hurricane finally makes landfall, Cleeton slows her narrative to capture each detail – the sounds, the smells, the temperature, the confusion. In parallel, each of her three women reaches a personal crisis that matches nature’s fury. Not surprisingly, all three main characters survive the storm, but just barely. And so the story ends with all survivors grateful for their lives despite their losses. As Helen rocks her baby in a Miami hospital, she thinks only of the days ahead. “There’s so much broken around us; maybe all we can do is try to fix each other, do what we can to preserve these precious moments in a world where there is so much sadness and loss.” That’s good advice following a pandemic, too.
MY WINE RECOMMENDATION With no vineyards in the Florida Keys where the story is set, I recommend choosing a New York wine – the home state of several characters. But with more than 700 wineries, the choice becomes difficult. Best to go with a vineyard that recently won Winery of the Year – Paumanok. Their Paumanok Assemblage 2015 earned Best Red at the 2012 New York Wine Classic. Made from a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc grapes, the wine is dense and round with aromas of cassis, black berry, cedar and spice. Pair it with a New York strip steak, grilled lobster tails and a loaded baked potato. $50
