GOLF ETIQUETTE If you have been playing golf for a while, this is a topic that has probably become an ingrained behavior. By following the USGA rules and then years of playing experience are a critical part of the game each time you sign up to play. However, it is always good to review and for those who are new to the game, this information can help to make your playing more enjoyable. Below are some PGA documented and LA golf course related etiquette behaviors to follow: 1. Dress and appropriate golf attire • No jeans • No tee shirts or sweats 2. Player respect and consideration • Positioning - When waiting your turn to tee off, hit from fairway or putt, do not stand directly behind another player. Courtesy is to stay out of their line-ofvision • Be a Silent Partner - Limit talking and moving around as other players are getting ready to hit and turn off your cell phone • Make your Cart Invisible - Always be considerate of where you place the golf cart on the course to not obstruct another player’s view or hitting direction • Repair the Ground you Play – You can use a penknife for fixing ball marks or a tee or one of those twopronged devices is fine. As for divots, replace them or use the seed mix packed on the side of your cart. Rake bunkers like you mean it. Ever notice that the worse the bunker shot, the poorer the job a guy does raking the sand? Make the area nice and smooth -- don't leave deep furrows from the rake. Before you exit the bunker, ask yourself, Would I be upset if I had to play from that spot? • Pay Attention to the Little Things – Lend a hand to other players…one obvious way is looking for lost balls PAGE 10 | MARCH // APRIL 2021

Pick up that extra club left on the fringe or the headcover dropped next to the tee, and return it to its owner after saying, "Nice shot!" And if you see a cart out of position or a provisional ball that needs picking up, don't just walk by. 3. Pace of Play • Play "ready golf" (hit when ready, even if you aren't away) until you reach the green, be prepared to play when it's your turn on the tee and green, and never search for a lost ball for more than five minutes. • The etiquette of “Playing Through” - If you’re holding up traffic, let the folks behind you pass, just as you should if you’re puttering along the freeway at 40 miles per hour. Unless, of course, they’ve got nowhere to go. On jam-packed tracks, there’s no point playing leap frog. Doing so helps no one. It can even make things worse. But let’s assume congestion isn’t an issue and your group is on the green, with golfers standing, arms-crossed, in the fairway behind you — If this happens once, it might be an aberration. If it happens a second time, guess what? You’re the problem. Proper etiquette requires you to step aside. You can wave them up while you are near the green, let them putt while you are planning your putts, then let them go to the next tee first. Or let them tee off right after you have hit, then let them move down the hole with you but at some point let them go ahead. 4. Know the Rules - it is always good to familiarize yourself with the overall rules of golf, especially since there are updates year after year and for tournament play, it is important to know them. MARINA PAVILION RULES AND REGULATIONS: HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events. FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore. PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind. ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion. NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks.

NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks.

BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup.
Park for use by member and guests only. No lifeguard on duty - swim at your own risk. Park closes at sunset. Use the facilities at your own risk. No littering. No motorized vehicles. No fires. No alcoholic beverages. No glass containers. No loud music. No fishing. No pets of any kind allowed. Children under 18 must be supervised by an adult.
ANYONE DAMAGING PROPERTY OR VIOLATING PARK RULES WILL BE BANNED.
PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks. PETS Pets are not allowed on the Marina Pavilion.

club business LAKE ARROWHEAD YACHT & COUNTRY CLUB - SHORT-TERM RENTAL GUIDELINES: PHASE I In order to protect and preserve the residential character, property values, and enjoyment of all homeowners within the Lake Arrowhead community, please observe the following guidelines for relative to short-term property rentals of Lake Arrowhead Phase I units. 1. Short-term property rentals (less than 6-months) are strictly prohibited in both Phase II and Phase III of Lake Arrowhead. The maximum number of occupants should be restricted to no more than two individuals per bedroom 2. Short-term rentals should be registered with LA Security gate they intend to enter, and identified as short-term rentals so that the appropriate identification may be provided at check-in a. Amenity use cards, identifying renters and associated unit address b. Vehicle “hang tag” for vehicles 3. All rental agreements should include an acknowledgement that renters have received and agree to abide by the Lake Arrowhead Rules and Regulations a. If boat usage is included with the rental of the home, a printed copy of the lake rules and restrictions should be included with the rental agreement, a copy should be left in the home, and a laminated copy should be placed in the boat and/or attached to the boat key b. Violations of the lake rules and regulations may result in revocation of the issued boat permit and result in suspension of lake access privileges 4. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of guests and renters of their home and violations of the Covenants or Rules and Regulations will typically be handled in the following manner: a. 1st infraction – issuance of written warning to homeowner b. 2nd infraction – 30-day suspension of common property access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters c. 3rd infraction – 12-month suspension of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters d. 4th infraction – permanent loss of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters e. Addition steps may be taken depending on the nature of the infraction, including contacting the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department or taking additional legal to enforce the community governing documents f. Common property damage by renters, if applicable, will be levied against the lot owner g. Egregious infractions may result in immediate suspension of common property access and privileges or other sanctions 5. “Party Houses” are strictly prohibited and deemed a nuisance and violation of the Lake Arrowhead Covenants, Article III, Section 19. Party Houses are also prohibited by popular short-term rental companies (Airbnb and VRBO) and nuisance properties will be reported to the appropriate listing entity. ARTICLE III, SECTION 19. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES. Noxious or offensive activities shall not be carried on upon any lot. Each Property Owner shall refrain from any act or use of his lot which could reasonably cause embarrassment, discomfort, annoyance or nuisance to the neighborhood.
ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY
When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.
ARTICLE III, SECTION 24. OPERATION OF BOATS. No vessel or boat shall be anchored in any of the waters within LAKE ARROWHEAD or in waters adjacent to LAKE ARROWHEAD so that the same shall in anyway interfere with navigation. No vessel, boat or person shall use any waters in LAKE ARROWHEAD in any manner which would be in violation of the rules and regulations with respect to the use thereof promulgated as hereinafter provided. community interest VOLUNTEERING: WHERE COMMUNITY BEGINS
by Jeff Schwartz – LAPOA Environmental Committee Liaison If you tuned in to the Quarterly property owner’s meeting on February 27th, you heard every board member reach out to the community for more volunteers. I know, it’s the same old plea and things get done around here one way or the other. To some degree that’s true. Most of the trash on the roadsides eventually gets picked up or disappears into the woods or lake. The gate and common areas get new pine straw, trimming and décor. We have (or will again have) events at the clubhouse for the enjoyment of all of our residents. We ALL pay our monthly dues and this is what we are supposed to get for that investment. Maintenance, security, amenities, etc., these are all part of the development we bought into. But what makes the difference between a development and a community? Well……the community. Everything in Lake Arrowhead has been enhanced by the residents who have contributed either their time, money, talent or a combination thereof. And we can do so much more. When I talked about my Committee, I said they were some of the most effective groups in the neighborhood and Rod Sudbeck echoed this about his Infrastructure Committee. That is true. Our committees affect how money is spent on the amenities we all take for granted (common area landscaping, trail maintenance and expansion, road improvement, drainage mitigation and simple neighborhood cleanliness) through their work with management - lending advice, expertise and good old sweat equity. Everyone loves people who make their life easier, and EVERYONE here should find a way to contribute to our community.

The recent growth of Lake Arrowhead means that we have more resources than ever. No, not the increase in dues revenue (although that helps), it’s the breadth of knowledge that is available to improve and strengthen our community. I appreciate the people who offer observations about what could be done better by management, the board or the developer. Often they are derisively called “problem identifiers,” but just because one can’t provide an answer doesn’t mean their question shouldn’t be asked. This is where community begins. We need your involvement. There are hundreds of property owners and thousands of residents here in Lake Arrowhead. Currently there are many aspects of our development where the questions outweigh our current ability to effectively deal with the issues. I believe that the time, talent and money is right here, right now to change that dynamic. Please let us know how YOU would like to contribute to your community. HOW TO KNOW WHEN YOU ARE GETTING OLD Everything hurts and what doesn't hurt, doesn't work. The gleam in your eyes is from the sun hitting your bifocals. You feel like the morning after and you haven't been anywhere. Your little black book contains only names ending in M.D. Your children begin to look middle-aged. You finally reach the top of the ladder and find it leaning against the wrong wall. Your mind makes contracts your body can't meet. A dripping faucet causes an uncontrollable urge. community interest BEHIND CLOSED DOORS... I MEAN CLOSED KITCHEN DOORS

Lately, with the leadership, skill and creative talent of our new Chef, Jason, great things have been coming from behind the closed doors of the Lake Arrowhead kitchen. Since Jason is usually the only person you may meet or even see from what is called in the industry “the back of the house” we on the Restaurant Committee thought it would be a great idea to introduce you to the team working with Jason, and I’m thrilled to have been chosen for that task. After spending time with the team and interviewing this interesting group of people I started thinking about how important they all are. In fact it inspired me to quote my husband, Maury: “ There is no one key to success but, deficiency in any one area can be the key to failure”. So to me, it is as important to have a sparkling clean dish as it is to have my fish grilled to perfection. Based on this I decided to introduce you to the team based on length of service at the Highlands Grill. DYLAN SPRAGUE has been working “back house” the longest, for approximately 5 years. Two amazing things about that; he is a senior at Cherokee High School and he works with his Mom, Tiffany, who is one of the wonderful servers in the “front of the house". With the encouragement and guidance from Chef Jason, Dylan has worked his way from dishwasher to Grill Station on the line. If he isn’t busy enough with school and the Grill Station Dylan also works in construction framing houses. Growing up in Lake Arrowhead he learned to appreciate the outdoors; camping, fishing or for even more excitement riding his dirt bike. He is planning to attend Chattahoochee Tech this fall to pursue a career as a welder. (Going from one hot spot to another!) I’m sure they’ll miss him in the kitchen when he changes careers. But, who knows maybe he’ll still be around since he seems to be able to manage at the minimum 2 jobs. VIVIAN HIGUERAS is originally from Argentina. She has grown to love this country and proudly

became a citizen in July, 2020, and those who know her know how lucky we are to have her here. Many of us know her from the front of the house, where she started as a server in 2015. Approximately six months later she became Assistant Restaurant Manager, and still managed to always have a smile on her face. In February, 2020, she moved from Lake Arrowhead and bought a home in Rydal and resigned from the Clubhouse. The good news for everything (except maybe our waistlines) she returned in August 2020 as the pastry chef. If you have tried her amazing deserts you will not be surprised that she has a background of baking for many years and enjoys creating beautiful tasty treats that vary on a weekly basis. If you haven’t tried them, stop denying yourself from her outstanding treats. While not in LA, Vivian enjoys working at a plant nursery where she nurtures her love for plants and the many medicinal opportunities they provide. She finds great joy in her diverse careers, but her greatest joys come from her beautiful, smart daughter who is a student at Adairsville High School. Vivian volunteers in support of her daughter’s School’s marching band and magnet events. She is happy to be back with her LA family and we are even happier to have her back. STEVEN RICE Steven has worked in the hospitality industry off and on for 20 years in everything from restaurants to hospitals. After moving to Lake Arrowhead approximately a year ago he joined Chef Jason as the Sous Chef. He is proudly second in command in the kitchen and is in charge when Jason is absent, a role he views as a serious responsibility. On a daily basis he is on the line at the Sauté Station. In addition to his restaurant responsibilities Steven and his wife Jana own Your CBD Store in Riverstone Shopping Plaza. Yes it’s in the shopping strip directly across from 7 Tequilas. So if you are in need of any therapeutics stop by to see what they have to offer to treat those occasional aches or pains. Steven is an avid outdoorsman and really appreciates the bucolic environment in Lake Arrowhead. He is an avid hiker,
community interest fisherman, and camper on his days off, which he seems to treasure almost as much as his work. Now that you’ve seen his picture you may recognize him on the hiking trails or fishing in LA. Although he enjoys his job and the great outdoors, he expresses his greatest joys in life are his wife and 13 year old daughter. CASEY ROSE has been a presence in one way or another at LA for most of his life. He is proud to now be a fulltime resident in LA. In fact, you just might know his dad, Christopher Rose, or his grandparents, Bob and Jill Rose. Casey has worked in the kitchen as a dishwasher for approximately 6 months. When he is not busy as the dishwasher, which can be a demanding job, he has the opportunity to help out in other aspects of the kitchen and has been pleased to be learning more about the restaurant industry from Jason and Steve. He is 18 years old and in the process of transferring from Georgia State to Valdosta University. When he is not at work, he said there is a great chance that we can find him on the Lake, fishing with friends or family. In fact, just the words “lake” and “fish” brought a big smile to his face. If you get a chance to say “Hello” to him, his pleasant personality is sure to bring a smile to yours. JR BUZZELL is the Pizza Chef and has been in the kitchen approximately 5 months. Interestingly, JR had applied to work in the Golf Shop when Jason read his resume he immediately knew this is an ambitious young man. As they say “The rest is history.” With great leadership (Jason) and dedication (JR) JR learned the skills and artistry of being a respected Pizza Chef. On the rare occasion that JR is not busy tossing dough, he helps out in other aspects of the kitchen, such as working on salads, bread or baked potatoes. In case you were wondering if JR is a smart guy, I can tell you, he is. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Trumpet Performance, and is in his final semester of getting a Masters of Music in Wind Band Conducting. As if that’s not enough, he is also a professional Horologist, so if you need your Grand Father Clock or vintage watch need to be repaired, give him a call. Or if you’re a classic car buff he has a few antique cars that he enjoys driving and
maintaining. In case you are still wondering if he is a smart guy, it’s obvious that one of his smartest moves was moving to LA from Wisconsin, where his parents and sisters were living, and he did that BEFORE Winter arrived! Should you see him on the golf course (yes, he also golfs) on what we would consider an inhospitably cold day, remember it is probably balmy for him as newly arrived from Wisconsin. ALYSSA BUZZELL is the newest member of the team as she has only been at The Highlands Grill for approximately 2 months. She is JR’s youngest sister. There is another sister between them who isn’t employed at the Clubhouse, but who knows what the future holds? Alyssa is a hardworking dishwasher. No matter how many dirty dishes are brought to her or how hard she works, I’m sure she would remain positive. In fact, I would say she has managed to maintain a positive attitude through a lot of challenging times. Not quite finished with high school in Wisconsin she moved here with her family. She began at Cherokee High School and then COVID changed everything. With virtual learning, she, like many others, has missed out on so much that is considered tradition for seniors. She began her advanced education in Criminal justice at Reinhardt University, but is transferring to Chattahoochee Tech next semester. She is an avid runner. If you see her running in the neighborhood, slow down and wave, as I’m sure she’ll wave back even if she’s running up one of our long, difficult hills. These are wonderful, hard-working people, but the most impressive fact that came through loud and clear is that they happily work together as a Team. That is heartwarming to see. As their pictures are part of this article, if you see any of them in the neighborhood or at the Grill, please do let them know how much we appreciate their talents and effort.

by Sarah Martin Jones The Underground Railroad – Colson Whitehead. New York: Doubleday, 2016. “If you want to see what this nation is all about, you have to ride the rails. Look outside as you speed through, and you’ll find the true face of America.” In his Pulitzer Prize winning novel, Colson Whitehead takes his reader on a tour of Ante Bellum America, showing not only the cruelty of slavery but also how this institution influenced 20th century thinking about race. His central character is Cora, a third-generation teenage slave who lives on a massive Georgia plantation run by two brothers. (Her grandmother died there; her mother fled leaving baby Cora behind.) Cora is as passive as her owner is cruel and has resigned herself to living out her meager life on the Randall plantation. But one night when a fellow slave is roasted over an open pit as the entertainment for visiting guests, Cora changes her mind. Fleeing in horror, Cora and a fellow slave named Caesar escape, aided not by Harriet Tubman, the historical “conductor” who led slaves north along a network of routes, safe homes and hiding places, but by way of a real underground locomotive. Chasing behind them is Ridgeway, a slave catcher who approaches his job as relentlessly as Javert in “Les Miserables.” From Georgia to South Carolina to North Carolina to Tennessee to Indiana and beyond, Whitehead takes Cora and the reader on a sightseeing tour not only of the South, but also of various American attitudes toward slavery and their “solutions” for the growing Black population. Much like Jonathan Swift did in “Gulliver’s Travels,” Whitehead’s book holds up a mirror to the ills of society, then and now. In South Carolina, Cora finds herself in what seems like an enlightened society. She is provided a room in a boarding house and given not only a paying job as a nanny to a wealthy family but also schooling and medical care. Thinking that life in South Carolina is, if not heaven, then at least not the hell she escaped, she passes on opportunities to board the railroad to the next destination. But when a doctor attempts to “educate” her about a state-wide public health initiative (think the Holocaust and the Tuskegee syphilis experiments) to sterilize slaves and thus control the population growth, she hops the rail. “For that reason alone,” the doctor explains to Cora, “emancipation is impossible. With strategic sterilization, first the women, but both sexes in time, we could free them from bondage without fear that they'd butcher us in our sleep.” PAGE 24 | MARCH // APRIL 2021
In North Carolina, she is greeted by corpses hanging from trees thanks to a statewide initiative to rid their fair state of all slaves. (For if cotton continues to grow, the State has concluded, more slaves will be needed until whites are outnumbered.) As Cora hides in an attic (think Anne Frank), she watches through a peephole the community’s weekly Friday Festival which closes with the same grim finale after the picnicking, entertainment and fireworks – the weekly hangings. When Cora is found in her hiding place, Ridgeway steps forward to claim her. Travels through Tennessee show a wasteland of burnt forest and towns overrun with yellow fever – a comment on a country’s relentless expansion despite the horrors it entails. Cora endures endless days to being chained to the bed of Ridgeway’s wagon, reflecting on what she has learned about the plight of the slave throughout her travels, looking for a chance to escape, until at last one comes her way. When she finally escapes her captor, again by way of an underground rail, she is next on a farm in Indiana (a state known for its strong support of the Union) owned and managed by a freed black man, John Valentine. It is a true community with a school, a library, homes, stores, a mill and a church. As time passes, Cora settles into her new life of freedom, making friends and feeding her thirst for reading. But one night when the community gathers to hear a debate about the implications of the Fugitive State Law, … No need to summarize what happens next for it is quick and bloody. The reader knows by now the outcome of such a utopian dream and recognizes that the Valentine farm is just one more stop on Cora’s endless journey to find freedom. When next she boards a vehicle after endless days walking along the underground track, it is a wagon driven by an elderly black man headed west to California. There Whitehead ends her story. But is it over? By taking the creative liberty of making the underground railroad a real train, Whitehead reboots his story again and again, suggesting that one day soon, maybe not tomorrow but perhaps the next day or the day after, Cora and her descendants will find if not a land of milk and honey, then at least a place of peace and possibility. Whitehead’s book is a well-researched look at a past with parallel tracks to today.

MY WINE RECOMMENDATION While Cora lived on the Valentine farm in Indiana, I’d like to think that she maybe walked down the road a piece to a neighboring farm established by German immigrant Simon Huber in 1843. Using wine making techniques learned in his homeland, he began growing grapes and making wines, just as his decedents still do at the Huber Winery in Borden, IN. While I suspect Cora was not a drinker (especially since she was underage), Mr. Huber might have encouraged her to try his Pinot Gris Reserve. It’s a light and crisp wine with hints of pear, melon and touches of minerality that would pair well with cold fried chicken and potato salad. $18
