golf news THE KATHY B. DAVIS FOUNDATION TO HOLD ANNUAL FUNDRAISING EVENTS Lake Arrowhead resident, Dave Davis, established The Kathy B. Davis Foundation in 2011 in memory of his wife, Kathy, who had a passion for serving and supporting others, especially young people with intellectual and developmental challenges. The goal of this 501c3 non-profit organization is to reach out to the community and bring together people from all walks of life. Its mission is, “To support and create life enhancing opportunities for individuals with intellectual/developmental challenges.” Expanding on Kathy’s dedication to the special-needs population, Mr. Davis has grown the foundation’s sphere to include senior citizens and others in the community who have a desire to volunteer and serve their neighbors. In his position as Executive Director, Dave has worked with the organization’s Board of Directors to establish and sustain three KBDF programs: • Special Needs Golf Clinic – an annual event designed to teach basic golf skills and a love of the game to area residents who have intellectual or developmental challenges • Flowers for a Purpose – a monthly activity which brings together members of the special-needs population and area senior citizens who want to learn about flowers and create beautiful arrangements • Adam Holland Special Education Scholarship - created in 2012 in honor of Dave’s son, Eric’s, best friend and awarded annually to an area college student majoring in Special Education In addition to its own programs, The KBD Foundation contributes to the work of other non-profits in Cherokee County and north Georgia. These organizations include Angels on Horseback in Jasper, GA, Adult Disability Medical Home in Marietta, GA, Empower Cherokee in Canton, GA, the special education CHOICE program of the Cherokee County School District and the Cherokee County Special Olympics. The charitable work undertaken by the Kathy B. Davis Foundation is funded by the proceeds from two major events held each year in Cherokee County. This year, the organization will host its Fourth Annual KBDF Memorial Golf Tournament, the foundation’s largest undertaking of the year, on Saturday, April 4, 2020, at the Lake Arrowhead Yacht and Country Club in Waleska, GA. Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The tournament will feature a $2500 Putting Contest and prizes for Longest Drive, Closest to Pin, Flight Winners, Raffle Drawings and Par 3s Hole-in-One. The Third Annual Live Auction and Social Event is planned for the fall of 2020 at Lewallen Farms in Waleska. Attendees will enjoy music by Canton pianist, Larry Wagner, hors d’oeuvres and desserts by Chef John, and the chance to bid on trips, art work, jewelry, wines and more. The combined proceeds from last year’s events totaled $32,000 and made the 2019 fundraisers the most successful to-date. For more information about the Kathy B. WANTED LADY GOLFERS by Jan Garbiel In the last issue of the Lake Arrowhead Living our contributing writer gave the ladies of Lake Arrowhead Community “10 Reasons” for joining the LGA. They were ten really good reasons and I hope that there are some of you out there that will consider joining our group. You will have an opportunity to meet us and see if this is an activity in which you’d like to participate. We will be having our kick-off “Swing into Spring” Meeting on March 18th, and we’d like to invite any lady who may have an interest. It will give you a chance to meet a great group of ladies, share a cocktail or glass of wine during our cocktail hour, see the latest fashions from Callaway Golf (modeled by our members) and have a wonderful dinner prepared by Chef John. We will be presenting our plans for our 8th Annual LGA/MGA Angel House Golf Tournament scheduled for May 16th. Over the years our contributions from this annual event have provided many improvements to the home for the Angel House girls. We will also be introducing our play events for the upcoming season and our chairpersons, Grace Kreft and Mindy McCutcheon, have promised a season of fun events with some special formats for play. I hope I have been able to entice you to at least come and take a look to see if this is a group that you would like to be a part of. We are a fun group of all levels of lady golfers and we’d like to share our group with you.

club business SECURITY UPDATE It’s getting to be boating season so just a few tips for the safety and enjoyment of all. • Always travel in a counter-clockwise direction on the big lake. • Watch for debris or skiers that may have fallen far away from the shoreline. • You must stay 100 ft. from other boats, kayaks and docks according to Georgia law. • Please respect the no wake areas this means your boat should not be causing a wake by the speed of your boat. A wake is any wave caused by your boat. • Have plenty of life jackets - a life jacket for each person on board • If it’s dark navigation lights-must be on. • When pulling a skier/tuber there must be a driver and a spotter. • Small children must wear a life jacket at all times. • Don’t harass wildlife with your boat. • Be aware of the weather and please don’t litter. • Lastly, please go 25 mph or less on our roads, it's just common sense to avoid an accident. Parking in the Narrows Marina parking lot is reserved for slip holders only. Slip holders are requested to park only one vehicle in the parking lot. Please car pool guests from Great Festival Park. Property owners in the Narrows should use Great Festival Park for any overflow parking.

With torrents of rain that have plagued us over the months of January and February and into March, many of us may be feeling out of shape for tennis. I suppose the silver lining to those very real rain clouds has been that we weren’t inundated with snow and ice. There’s some solace in that silver lining.
The bottom line from the top down is to be sure that your stretches cover all the muscle groups that are going to be involved in this relatively vigorous sport:
So as the rain goes away and the courts dry out we are arriving at Springtime and warmer weather that should let us all get back to this wonderful sport.
Then, maybe it’ll be time to hit the backboard or the courts.

What’s the first thing to do? Polish the racquet? Buy new tennis balls? Go down to Court 3 and hit a bunch against the new backboard? My recommendation is to S-T-R-E-T-C-H before taking a swing or running around.
We’re all looking forward to playing, so we’d best not disappoint ourselves by forgetting that warm -ups involve more than just some friendly short to longer volleys. Stretch before playing (especially for those of us that are seniors) should be de rigeur.
My bet is all we learned how to stretch back in school, but there are a bunch of websites that can tell you how to stretch and what the best stretches are (in their opinion, anyway) for tennis or racquet sports in general.
I’m making that pledge to myself and hope everyone will join me and remind me. Nothing would be more disappointing than to have great weather and be unable to take advantage of it because of an avoidable injury.

by John Poidevant, Ph.D. Cape May, New Jersey to Hampton, Virginia - August 18-26, 2019 As our plane landed in Atlantic City, New Jersey the Skipper and crew of SeaEagle were excited to return to their vessel, safely moored at Miss Chris’s Marina in Cape May. After a lengthy Uber ride, the crew arrived ready to settle in and explore this quaint coastal town. As we approached the dock, our salty vessel welcomed us back, seemingly unblemished since our last trip a month ago. After boarding SeaEagle, the key to the companionway hatch was nowhere to be found. Not good! After reviewing our options, a bolt cutter was readily obtained from the marina manager. A rather robust padlock was the only item that separated the crew from the comfortable confines of the cabin. An eerie silence fell among the crew as Skipper John applied the bolt cutters to the lock. After a few moments of moderate to, shall we say extreme exertion, the shackle snapped, and the color of Skipper John’s face eventually returned to normal! After unpacking and settling in, it was time to explore the town and find a good restaurant. Cape May is a quintessential nautical town, steeped in history with numerous pubs and marinas. A nearby seafood restaurant was located, and the skipper and crew enjoyed a fine meal while planning their trip. Meal planning and boat preparation are key components of a successful voyage, and details matter! A careful plan emerged that delegated important tasks to each member of the crew. The skipper and crew concluded that an early start to the day was needed to ensure all the tasks were completed. Sunday morning found the crew up and working just after sunrise. The percolator emitted a strong aroma of freshly brewed coffee and classical piano music filtered through the cabin. There was much to accomplish, and the list grew as the skipper and crew revised their lists. After a hearty breakfast at a local marina, a supermarket was located, and provisions were soon procured. Price, quantity, and quality were hot topics as the crew of SeaEagle perused the aisles. After a few colorful discussions, healthy compromises were reached! Soon, the shopping carts were full and ready for transport back to Miss Chris’s Marina. After storing the goods, the skipper and crew began preparing SeaEagle for the next day’s departure. Water and fuel were purchased, and safety systems reviewed. It was great to have veteran sailor Mike McKay on board. He joined Skipper John on the previous trip in June from Southwest Harbor, Maine to Providence, Rhode Island. Mike would be completing his requirements for the Basic Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Cruising Courses offered by the American Sailing Association. As an ASA Instructor, Skipper John found Mike to be a personable, skilled, and knowledgeable sailor. He was a welcome addition to the crew! George Wrensen was new to SeaEagle and had PAGE 22 | MARCH // APRIL 2020
considerable experience around the water. He had worked as a Lifeguard on Long Island and had experience on power boats. Although his experience with sailing was limited, he demonstrated an adventurous spirit. His experience as an avid motorcyclist and outdoorsman would also be helpful. Skipper John had worked with George during his career as a School Psychologist. After participating in many challenging scenarios with George, Skipper John was confident he would be a strong addition to the crew. Moreover, his experience as a professional lifeguard would prove helpful if a crew member was suddenly deposited overboard! As everyone prepared SeaEagle for an early morning departure, damage to the port hull was discovered just above the waterline. The hull had severe scratches from a fender board that had slipped out of position. The fender board had grazed the hull in a figure 8 fashion as the tide lifted and dropped SeaEagle each day with the 4-foot tidal surge that occurred in the Cape May area. This had occurred on a daily basis for the past month! Although the hull had not been punctured, the scratches were unsightly. Skipper John requested George go below and find a small, soft brush and a mild abrasive (such as toothpaste) to remove the scratches. He readily complied and began intensely scrubbing the hull to remove the scratches. After five minutes of intense effort, he sadly replied there was no improvement. Skipper John carefully examined the damaged area and confirmed this finding. As he looked at the tools George had used, a smile slowly spread across his face. The mild abrasive George used on the hull looked odd. Upon closer examination, the tube of “abrasive” was not toothpaste, but Cortisone cream! Thus, the hull has been “soothed” by George’s efforts and the scratches were unfazed! After replacing the soothing skin cream with baking soda toothpaste, the scratches magically disappeared! Humor and humility are a sailor’s close companion, and George’s “soothing” hull repair was a frequent topic of happy hour discussions the remainder of the trip!

community interest The skipper and crew were up early and departed the dock by 9:00 a.m. Skipper John took the helm and guided SeaEagle toward the Cape May Canal that would lead us into Delaware Bay. The first obstacle encountered was a bridge with a clearance of 55 feet. The Skipper and crew approached with caution since SeaEagle has an “air draft” of 52 feet. After clearing the bridge, we enjoyed a placid early morning cruise to Delaware Bay. The entrance to this expansive body of water was straight forward and allowed Mike to practice his maneuvering skills under power. This included circles, figure 8s, and backing in reverse. Maneuvering under power in reverse can be tricky due to the full keel of our vessel. After 30 minutes of practicing, Skipper John resumed the helm and turned SeaEagle’s bow to the northwest toward the Connecticut & Delaware (C&D) Canal. The trip was largely uneventful aside from the occasional freighter and barge that passed to port. George settled right into the cruising routine and was proving to be a capable crew member! After a 47mile run, the crew selected an anchorage just west of the entrance to the canal and set the hook. The crew enjoyed a relaxing sunset, beverages, and dinner prior to turning in at 10:00 p.m. to prepare for tomorrow’s voyage through the canal. The C & D Canal is 14 miles long, 450 feet wide, and connects the Delaware River with the Chesapeake Bay. The canal was built to save approximately 300 miles on the routes between Philadelphia to Boston and Wilmington to Baltimore. It is considered the third busiest shipping channel in the world with over 25,000 vessels transiting the canal each year. This statistic had Skipper John on edge with visions of massive freighters and barges surrounding SeaEagle as she navigated a very confined waterway. Fortunately, his fears were unfounded! stay tuned next month for our continued adventure!

After interviewing at length three candidates nominated by current Board Members the Board is pleased to announce that the remaining two Board positions have been filled. Some of the candidates were nominated by more than one current Board Member.

To avoid any implication of favoritism, the interviews were actually conducted by the Board's Secretariat, Sally Winchester and Kathy Dietz. They asked the same questions (previously suggested by the Board) to all candidates and the Q&A was observed by the Board Members, who did have the opportunity to ask a limited number of additional questions.

Tell Me a Story: My Life with Pat Conroy – Cassandra King Conroy. New York: William Morrow, 2019. In the South we don’t hide our crazy. We parade it on the front porch and give it a cocktail. Or, if we are Pat Conroy, we write about it. Whether it was an abusive father in The Great Santini, a fragile sister and social-climbing mother in the Prince of Tides, or a troubled husband in South of Broad, Conroy drew on his life to create not just memorable characters but some of the best modern Southern literature of the 20th century. By his side for the last eighteen years of his life was his wife Cassandra King, a writer herself (The Same Sweet Girls and Sunday Wife, among others) who shares her life with this larger-than-life man in a moving memoir. Fans of both their works will learn what readers have always concluded about Conroy – that behind the girth of the legend was a tender, generous, wounded, ebullient man. King begins and ends her book on that critical moment when his pancreatic cancer was diagnosed and, a month later, when he died at the age of seventy at his home in Beaufort, SC surrounded by his family and loved ones. “The water is wide,” said Cassandra, “and he has now passed over.” King was a literature professor, soon-to-be published author and a divorced “Sunday wife” when she met Conroy at a literary event in 1995 “while I was stuffing my face at the buffet” she confesses. It was an encounter she describes as “the beginning of my spin in a category 5 hurricane called Conroy.” She writes: “His coloring was wonderfully vivid, with the snow-white hair, ruddy face, and pale blue eyes”. He had “shoulders wide as a tree trunk.”
