Lake Arrowhead Living 2020 SUPER BOWL SCRAMBLE On January 25, a team from Lake Arrowhead won this year’s Super Bowl Scramble. While a typical 4-person scramble golf tournament, scoring for this event was based on a football analogy. For example, a bogey (safety) was worth negative 2 points, a par (field goal) was worth 3 points, a birdie (touchdown) was worth 6 points, and an eagle (touchdown and 2 point conversion) was worth 8 points. In addition, a team could earn one or two extra points for each birdie by sinking either a short or long putt. Using this format the winning team scored 105 points. Overall, 11 teams (43 golfers) competed in the tournament and the Club awarded prizes to the first 2 teams in 2 flights. Each 1st Flight winning team member received a football trophy and proshop gift certificate. Other winners received pro-shop gift certificates. The winners are shown in the pictures below. TOP 10 LALGA by Ruth Nunes I’m guessing, yes it’s just a guess, that at least a few ladies have had the thought this winter, “Maybe I’ll join the ladies golf group”. For the benefit of quite a few new residents and some ladies who have pondered joining, I’d like to suggest my top 10 reasons for joining the LALGA. 10. The Golf. Now you’re wondering why would golf be the number 10 reason. Wouldn’t golf be my number one reason to join a golf group? If you want to play golf you can go out just about any time you want and play, book a tee time and head on out. Fun, perhaps, but not the most fun. Therefore, read on for the other reasons to join. 9. The Board. As soon as you join the LGA you will realize that the group has a great team headed by President Jan Garbiel. Already you are making new friends and learning something about the group through its hardworking organized leaders. 8. The Events. Every month of the season, the LGA hosts a golf tournament exclusively for LGA members. It is usually a nine-hole format with a new “twist” for every event. Don’t worry; you don’t need a partner; you will be paired up, the better to meet new people. 7. Format and Rules. Speaking of events, the rules and formats are made to level the playing field. So even if you missed a few lessons, aren’t the top player, or are just having an off day, overall the formats are planned so even you, yes, you have a chance to win. 6. Prizes. With the leveling format, not only do you have the chance to win, but you could also be the runner-up. Sometimes, even the third-place team gets a prize. Some events even have a prize for best costume, giving you a chance to show off your creative side. Prizes are often something useful to all, such as, clubhouse gift cards. 5. Notoriety. As a winner, not only might you end up with fortune, but then you also get the fame. As the cameras are flashing, with your winning smile your picture will be posted in LA Magazine for the entire community to admire. Before you know it complete strangers will be asking, “Don’t I know you”? 4. Food and Drink. Lunch or, occasionally, dinner is always part of an LGA event. Chef John and Restaurant Manager Elizabeth always go out of their way to make sure the ladies of the LGA have delicious meals and are well taken of. So, remember, you can play hungry in anticipation of a great meal as long as you stay hydrated. 3. Play Days. The LGA has reserved tee times on the beautiful Highlands Course throughout the golf season. The start time varies a bit with the length of the days, but the reserved times are always set on Monday afternoon and Thursday morning. The popular Monday afternoon game -- which is known by some as “Giggle Golf” -- is followed PAGE 6 | FEBRUARY // MARCH 2020
golf news by the even more popular Happy Hour. So if you are a beginner and need a starting point. Giggle Golf is an easy choice. 2. People. I have met so many likable people, made a few really close friends and enjoyed the comradery of ladies I probably never would have met without joining the LGA. So, with approximately 50 LGA members, golfing with the group gives you an excellent opportunity to network within our community. Sign up on the play days, and make some new friends. 1. Angel House. The LGA is very proud of all the support they have provided for the young ladies living at Angel House and that’s why it is the number one reason to join the LGA. In addition to the annual Angel House Tournament, the LGA provides additional support for Angel House throughout the year with thoughtful donations such as back to school and Christmas gifts. Isn’t it great to know that by joining the LGA, not only do you make a positive change in your life with exercise and friendships, but, you can also change someone else’s life for the better, and someone who really needs the help!

A new act, Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act (SECURE Act) is the most impactful retirement legislation in many years.
The SECURE Act made some positive changes by increasing the age for required minimum distributions (RMDs) from 70 ½ to 72 and eliminating the age limit for contributions to IRAs. The hallowed shibboleth, Practice Makes Perfect, is surely true in most sports and tennis is no exception. Building muscle memory is one major goal of practice. Self-analysis to make positive changes to correct deficiencies, while reinforcing efficiencies, is another However, Unless one wanted to just practice serving and shag balls continuously from the other side of the tennis court (not much fun – or aerobic exercise – at all),to practice tennis at Lake Arrowhead, it has taken at least two players… Until NOW. How so? The so is the installation of a new professional tennis backboard. Originally installed at the back of Court #3, it became quickly apparent that location presented some risks, particularly for pickleball players whose outer court boundary line is much closer to the fence. Now the unit has been moved to the side of Court #4, which offers an added bonus, as there is a gate on that side
of the fence so an errant shot over the backboard can be retrieved. It is also hoped that this new setup might be useful for outdoor New York Style Handball (also known as American Handball) or One Wall Paddleball. While the area is not yet marked for those potential games, knowing that the rear of a Handball court or One Wall Paddleball court is 34 feet from the backboard and the court is 20’ wide, chalk or tape could be used to mark the court in the meantime. Similarly, the service line could be marked at 16 feet from the backboard. But the expectation is that the backboard will indeed be used mostly for tennis practice, and, perhaps for tennis teaching, especially for youngsters just starting out. The LAPOA Board and the tennis players appreciate this new amenity and look forward to its use.

by Sarah Martin Jones Nothing to See Here – Kevin Wilson. New York: Harper Collins, 2019. It’s not unusual for kids to have meltdowns – to turn red in the face, to fall to floor screaming, to cry uncontrollably until someone, usually an adult, gives them what they want. After all, kids are kids and have little control over themselves, let alone their environment. Of course, they act out when their world seems to turn on them. But what if their temper tantrums were combustible? What if their anger produced literal flames? Flareups that don’t cause injury to them but can damage people and property around them? That, as the saying goes, is a whole different kettle of fish. Kevin Wilson tells such a story through his narrator, Lillian, a bright, foul-mouth, tough, basketball playing young woman who is willing to take on the impossible just to get away from her dead-end life. One day she receives a letter from Madison, her former boarding school roommate – a rich, beautiful, privileged woman who is accustomed to having people at her beck and call. She offers Lillian a job: To serve as nanny for the twin children of her new husband, Jasper Roberts, a senator from Tennessee, while Madison manages his campaign to become the next Secretary of State. Soon Lillian is living with the ten-year-old twins, Bessie and Roland, in a newly renovated guesthouse on the Roberts estate, chockablock full of every distraction a kid could want from games to snack foods. “The whole place felt like Sesame Street mixed with a mental health facility,” comments Lillian, recognizing the irony that the
house was the former slave quarters on the property. All she must do is keep the twins happy and out of sight. And, oh yes, keep them from getting upset and bursting into flames. That’s a given. “If we get upset, or if we freak out, or if something bad happens,” Roland explains, “then we catch on fire.” Nothing to it. Piece of cake. It’s an impossible job description, but Lillian is smart, and patient, and loving. She’s learned much from her impoverished life. She knows the trick of caring for someone. “This how you raise children,” she muses. “You build them a house that is impervious to danger and then you give them every single thing that they could ever want, no matter how impossible. You read to them at night. Why couldn’t people figure this out?” As the summer passes for the three outcasts – swimming in the pool, reading books, playing basketball, eating healthy stuff along with the junk food – a bond develops even as the world around them becomes more complicated. The kids begin to realize that their father and stepmother truly don’t want them. The newlyweds want them gone, not just hidden in a house at the back of Jasper’s estate.
MY WINE RECOMMENDATION Tennessee may be synonymous with whiskey and moonshine, but since the 1970s, vineyards have produced wines from Tennessee-grown grapes. One of the oldest family-owned and -operated is Beachaven Vineyards in Clarksville. Established by amateur winemaker Judge William O. Beach, he was the man who led the charge to change state legislation in the ‘70s. allowing wine to be produced and sold in Tennessee. Since then, his son-in-law and family have garnered hundreds of metals for their wines, most recently receiving a Gold Medal for their 2019 Chambourcin. Made from a French American hybrid grape, the wine has hints of plum and has a medium length finish. The Senator and his Mrs. might serve this red at one of their fund-raising events, as long as the twins are not there. $15
As the story reaches it climax (and it’s a real doozie) the reader is so invested in the welfare of these children that their outbursts seem, well, normal. Rational even considering the emotional abuse they have received in their short lives. “They didn’t want to set the world on fire,” Lillian concludes. “They just wanted to be less alone in it.” It’s that simple.
