藝術節在二月二十七日以西班牙國家舞劇院著 名舞劇《美麗的奧蒂羅》揭開序幕，在舞台重 現巴黎黃金時代的歌舞昇平，別出心裁。三月 二十七日藝術節閉幕以大型舞劇《牡丹亭》為 壓軸演出，呈獻導演兼編舞黎星對經典愛情劇 目的嶄新演繹。今年的音樂節目陣容強大，匯 聚各傑出鋼琴家獻技，有年輕韓國天才鋼琴家 任奫燦，也有榮獲二零二五年范．克萊本國際 大賽金獎及觀 眾 大獎的本地鋼琴家沈靖韜，實 在不容錯過。
一如既往，藝術節包羅繽紛多彩的外展及教育 活動。今年的「加料節目」着重豐富藝術愛好 者的文化體驗，加深對世界級藝術家的認識， 對於啓發更多人參與藝術活動，以至鞏固香港 作為中外文化藝術交流中心的定位，極為重要。

I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the organisation of its 2026 season. This year’s Festival, the 54th edition, features some 180 performances, encompassing music, Chinese and Western opera, theatre, dance, arts technology and a dazzling variety of performing arts productions.
The Festival opens on 27 February with Ballet Nacional de España’s acclaimed operatic ballet La Bella Otero , recreating the glamour of Paris’ golden era on stage. The Festival concludes on 27 March with the large-scale dance theatre production DreaminThePeonyPavilion , directed and choreographed by Li Xing, injecting fresh life into the timeless love classic. This year’s music performances present a number of brilliant pianists, including young Korean piano sensation Yunchan Lim, and Hong Kong-born Aristo Sham, the gold medallist and audience award winner at the 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.
As ever, the Festival features a diverse range of outreach and educational activities. This year’s PLUS programme focuses on a wide cultural experience for arts lovers and deeper understanding of world-class artists, contributing to promoting engagement in cultural events and consolidating Hong Kong’s positioning as the East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange.

A warm welcome to the 54th Hong Kong Arts Festival. As a leading international performing arts event, the Festival continues to uphold its mission of enriching our city’s cultural life and promoting the best of the performing arts to different sectors of our community. This year, the Festival brings to Hong Kong more than 1,100 distinguished local and international artists from a wide range of artistic disciplines in over 180 performances of more than 45 programmes, as well as about 300 “PLUS”, outreach and education events.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the HKSAR Government, acting through the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, for its annual subvention and matching grant. My heartfelt thanks also go out to The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, our corporate sponsors, charitable foundations and donors for their generous support. Their invaluable contributions empower us to actively advance the community through the performing arts.

第 54 屆香港藝術節雲集眾多大師級藝術家與傑 出團隊，帶來超過 180 場的音樂、舞蹈、戲劇、 歌劇、戲曲、藝術科技與跨界創作節目，展示藝 術家的精湛造詣。
今年的其中一個主題，是對「勇氣與和平」的探 索。當全球都因為戰亂、流離、經濟下行等苦難 感到焦躁不安，藝術家以獨特的視角與語言，在 舞台上交織出對世界的回應，提醒我們抱持堅毅 與希望。

The 54th Hong Kong Arts Festival once again brings together great masters and outstanding artists, presenting more than 180 performances across music, dance, theatre, opera, Chinese opera, arts-tech and interdisciplinary creations—showcasing the exceptional craft of leading local and international talent.
One of this year’s themes is an exploration of “Courage and Peace”. At a time when the world is troubled by war, displacement, economic downturns and other hardships, artists respond from their own distinctive perspectives and in their own languages on stage, reminding us of the need to be resilient and hopeful.
Some works in this year’s Festival adopt a minimalistic theatrical approach, enabling us to transcend the constraints of geography and resources. We also continue to embrace arts-tech, using mixed-reality technologies to open up new performance possibilities.
As always, the Festival presents more than 300 outreach and education activities. Our PLUS events feature a curated series of talks, masterclasses, backstage tours and guided cultural walks. Our comprehensive education initiatives tailored for primary, secondary and tertiary students are aimed at enabling students to gain a more in-depth understanding and appreciation of the works we present.

, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and in February and March each year.
non-profit organisation. The total income target for FY2025/26 (including the 54th Hong Kong Arts Festival and 2026 “No Limits”) is approximately HK$159 million. Current Government annual baseline funding accounts for around 12% of the Festival's total income. Around 24% of the Festival’s income needs to be generated from the box office, and around 44% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations. The remaining 20% is expected to come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching grant scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. The HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, the HKAF has commissioned and produced over 250 local productions across genres including Cantonese opera, theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas.

The HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced with GoetheInstitut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch; Richard III and TheTempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with the HKAF as a co-commissioning institution; Green Snake co-commissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival; Dream of the Red Chamber coproduced with San Francisco Opera; Laila , a co-production with Finnish National Opera and Ballet, and 20,000LeaguesUndertheSea , co-produced with The Central Academy of Drama, China, and Compagnie Point Fixe.
The HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 33 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached around 849,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 halfprice student tickets each year.
The HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meetthe-artist sessions and guided cultural tours.
The HKAF actively promotes inclusion via the arts to every corner of the community. The “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, was launched in 2019. Through a series of performances and diverse arts experiences for students and the community, “No Limits” strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.

Ticket holders are strongly advised to arrive punctually. The HKAF reserves the right to refuse the (a) admission of latecomers (whether at the beginning of the performance or after the intermission) and (b) re-admission of audience members who leave the auditorium during the performance.

Author Kim Young-ha
Born in 1968, Kim Young-ha is a preeminent figure in contemporary Korean literature. He first gained major acclaim with his 1996 novel, IHavetheRighttoDestroyMyself, which earned him the Munhakdongne New Author Award. Throughout his career, Kim has explored the complexities of human identity, memory, and the fractured realities of modern life with intellectual depth and narrative mastery. His major works include BlackFlower, Diary ofaMurderer and Farewell. In 2009, he was a resident writer at Hong Kong Baptist University’s International Writers’ Workshop. His seminal novel, TheEmpireofLight, which serves as the basis of this production, is lauded for its sharp investigation into the hidden layers of the self in a divided nation. Translated into over 30 languages, Kim’s oeuvre has earned him nearly every major literary prize in Korea. Today, he is regarded as a defining voice of a generation that bridged the transition into a globalised Korea, continuing to influence both the literary world and the broader cultural discourse.

Kim Ki-yong is a foreign film importer, an ordinary man like many others. His wife, Mari, works as a saleswoman at a car dealership. The couple live in dull anonymity in Seoul, blending in with the city. Then one e-mail throws their ordinary existence into turmoil. A few cryptic words—“Order No 4”—pull Kim back to his past: he’s a spy who has operated in South Korea for more than 20 years. Suddenly, he has only 24 hours to return to his native North Korea and abandon the life he has built.

Director Arthur Nauzyciel
Arthur Nauzyciel is a director and actor who led the Centre Dramatique National Orléans from 2007-16 and has led the Théâtre National de Bretagne (TNB) since 2017. After studying visual arts and cinema, he joined the Théâtre national de Chaillot school in 1987, then under the direction of Antoine Vitez. He first directed LeMaladeimaginaireoulesilence de Molière (1999), based on Molière and Giovanni Macchia, later revived at the TNB in 2023.
In France, his productions include HappyDays/Oh Les Beaux Jours by Samuel Beckett (2003); Ordet (LaParole) by Kaj Munk (Avignon Festival, 2008); JanKarski(Monnomestunefiction) in 2011 for which he won the Georges-Lerminier award from Syndicat de la critique; Chekhov’s La Mouette at Avignon (2012); La Dame aux camélias by Alexandre Dumas fils; Mes frères (2020) by Pascal Rambert; Splendid’s (2015) and Les Paravents (2023) by Jean Genet.
Nauzyciel also works abroad: Black Battles with Dogs (2001) and Roberto Zucco (2004) in Atlanta; and Julius Caesar (2008) for the American Repertory Theater in Boston. His international projects include Samuel Beckett’s L’Image (2006) in Dublin; Abigail’sParty in Norway (2012); and The EmpireofLight in Seoul (2016), and La Ronde (2023) in Prague. He collaborates widely with artists across festivals and productions and oversees the TNB Drama School as director, developing its vocational training programmes.

In Conversation with the Director Arthur Nauzyciel
將小說搬上舞台時，你最主要的關注點是 甚麼？
一言蔽之，就是金基榮和張瑪麗的人生軌
跡。小說的主題是愛——準確來說是消磨殆 盡的愛，以及分裂；而導致這對夫妻與這個 國家分裂的，其實是同一樣東西。我想聚焦
這段過去的創傷如何持續影響當今韓國人的 生活，以及人們如何不自覺地背負着它。我 聽說，小說混合了原作者虛構的一些故事， 還有他從別人那裏聽來的真實故事。
在舞台演出中，我嘗試進一步展現這種半 虛半實的特質，讓演員講述他們自身對兩 韓分裂的記憶，藉此把這齣戲化為一場舞 台上的儀式。
作為外國人，你如何看待這本極具韓國特
色的小說？
我與作者金英夏見面後，發覺我們原來有很 多共通點。而這些共通點具備的普世性，必
然能夠同時吸引韓國和世界各地的觀眾。間
諜題材只是金英夏藉以帶出其他主題的一個 切入點，而令瑪麗和基榮決裂的那個秘密， 其實比我們想像中更具普遍性——說到底， 並非只有間諜才會擁有秘密。
What was your primary concern when adapting the novel for the stage?
Put simply, it was to focus on the trajectories of Kim Ki-yeong and Jang Mari. The main theme of the novel is love—specifically, wasted love—and separation. The same forces that divide the country also separate the couple. I wanted to spotlight how the tragic past of Korea continues to affect the lives of Koreans today; how everyone bears that history within them, often without realising it. I’m told that the author blended invented stories with real accounts he had either heard or been told.
For the stage production I took this a step further by asking the actors to share their own memories of the division of the two Koreas. We then turned the play into something akin to a ritual ceremony.
As a foreigner, how did you approach this very Korean novel?
I met with Kim Young-ha and we soon realised that we had quite a few things in common. Our shared perspectives were sufficiently universal to appeal to Korean and global audiences alike. The spy motif is a “hook” that Kim Young-ha uses to explore deeper themes; the secret separating Mari and Ki-yeong has a universal resonance. After all, one does not have to be a spy to have secrets.

你如何看待首爾在這部作品中所扮演的 「角色」？
首爾與法國巴黎最大的差別，在於「過去」
在巴黎可謂無處不在，市中心大部分建築 更可追溯至十七世紀。但在首爾，歷史卻 彷彿被刻意抹除。我們很容易忽略一點，就 是「過去」本來就承載於我們當中，也可以 說，我們本身就是歷史的產物。這正正是這 齣戲的主題——記憶。

I’m told that you visited the places mentioned in the novel with Kim Young-ha?
That’s true. I wanted to forge a physical connection between those places with the story. The city itself is a character in the plot. Two people move constantly around the city. Their paths are different, but they remain in perpetual motion.
Is that why you use film in the production?
Even before I began working on the adaptation, I knew I would include film and that these filmed images would play a significant role. By using closeup shots of faces and making locations appear ghostly—almost spectral—I’m able to convey a specific sense of melancholy and loneliness.
How do you perceive Seoul as a character in the production?
The most striking difference between Seoul and its French counterpart, Paris, is that the past is omnipresent in Paris. Most of the buildings in the city centre date back to the 17th century. In Seoul, it feels as though the past has been swept away. We often fail to realise that we carry the seeds of the past within us—that we are the products of history. After all, this project is about memory.

Adaptation
Valérie Mréjen
Valérie Mréjen is a visual artist, writer, director and associate artist at the Théâtre National de Bretagne (TNB). Over the past 20 years, her work has featured in festivals and exhibitions in France and internationally, including the Palais de Tokyo, the Tate Modern and the Brooklyn Museum. In 2008, the Jeu de Paume hosted a retrospective of her work titled LaPlacedelaConcorde.
A prolific author, she has published numerous stories, including Mongrand-père, L’Agrume and Troisièmepersonne. Mréjen has also directed a wide array of short films and documentaries, such as Pork andMilk (2006) and the feature film Enville (2011). In 2018, she co-directed LeCarnavaldesanimaux with Albin de la Simone and, in 2021, GardienParty with Mohamed El Khatib. More recently, she showcased Commentsedébarrasserdesoncrépiintérieur and Communiqué—collaborations with Arthur Nauzyciel—at the 2024 Festival TNB. Her latest creation is Pomme-frite, a performance for the young audience.

Set Designer Riccardo Hernández
Riccardo Hernández is a set designer. He works regularly on Broadway, where he has won numerous awards including a Pulitzer Prize 2002 in for Topdog/Underdog and a Tony award in 2012 for The Gershwins’ PorgyandBess In the world of opera, he has created sets for Appomattox by Philip Glass in 2007 and FlorenciaenelAmazonas by Mary Zimmerman (2023). Currently, he serves as the Co-Chair of the Design Department at the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University. He also collaborates regularly with Arthur Nauzyciel, designing the scenography for several of his productions, including JuliusCaesar, Abigail'sParty, Splendid’s and Les Paravents.

Ingi Bekk
Born in Iceland, Ingi Bekk is an international video and lighting designer whose practice spans theatre, opera and live music. His notable stage credits include the Royal Shakespeare Company’s TheTempest and ThePearlFishers for the Tel Aviv Opera.
Bekk is a regular collaborator of the director Katie Mitchell; their recent projects include TravellingonOneLeg for the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg. Beyond the theatre, he has worked with world-renowned bands such as Blur and the Backstreet Boys. TheEmpireofLight represents his first collaboration with Arthur Nauzyciel.

Pierre-Alain Giraud
Pierre-Alain Giraud is a director of immersive works and films. He is also the co-founder of Novaya, which specialises in mixed-reality storytelling. A graduate of Arts et Métiers in Paris and the London Film School, he merges cinema, music and immersive technology.
With Stéphane Foenkinos, he co-directed Noire, which was named Best Immersive Experience at Cannes in 2024. In 2023, he co-directed the music video Victimhood for Björk.
His latest mixed-reality work, Playing withFire featuring Yuja Wang, is playing at the Philharmonie de Paris until May, followed by a Southbank Centre debut in London this autumn.

Xavier Jacquot
Xavier Jacquot is a sound designer. He studied at the École Supérieure d'Art Dramatique at the Théâtre National de Strasbourg, and collaborates regularly with directors such as Stéphane Braunschweig, Christophe Rauck and Marc Paquien. He has also worked on short and feature-length films for the cinema, as well as dramas and documentaries for television.
Jacquot has been a core collaborator of Arthur Nauzyciel. Their partnership has continued across numerous productions, including LeMaladeimaginaireoule silencedeMolière, BlackBattleswith Dogs, Ohlesbeauxjours, JanKarski(Mon nomestunefiction), TheEmpireofLight, LaDameauxcamélias, Mesfrères, La Ronde and LesParavents.

Costume Designer Gaspard Yurkievich
Gaspard Yurkievich studied fashion design at Studio Berçot in Paris. He rose to prominence in 1997 when he was awarded the first prize at the Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography, subsequently presenting his debut collection in 1998. His signature style is both personal and recognisable—a subtle mix of traditional fashion and contemporary design. His costume designs have featured in several productions by Arthur Nauzyciel, including RedWater, Faim, TheBitter TearsofPetravonKant and TheEmpire ofLight

Ji Hyun-jun
As Kim Ki-yong
After beginning his professional life as a documentary director for two years after college, Ji Hyun-jun pivoted to acting in 2003 by joining a theatre company. After a three-year tenure there, he spent another three years as a guest member of the Trust Dance Company in Seoul. This diverse background allowed him to cultivate a multi-disciplinary career spanning theatre, musical and dance, and he has since expanded his reach into television and film. His artistic contributions have earned awards including including Best New Actor at both the 50th Dong-A Theater Awards and the sixth Korea Theater Awards .

飾 張瑪麗

As Jang Mari
Moon So-ri is a celebrated South Korean actress and filmmaker known for her transformative performances across film, television and stage. She first achieved global acclaim with her breakout role in Oasis (2002), earning the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Newcomer at the Venice International Film Festival—a feat that established her as a premier talent in world cinema. Apart from acting, she expanded her artistry by writing and directing the 2017 film TheRunningActress. Her recent work in ThreeSisters (2021) garnered her the Blue Dragon Film Award for Best Actress, while her television presence remains strong through series such as Queenmaker (2023) and WhenLife GivesYouTangerines (2024). While primarily a theatre artist, he gained screen recognition playing a serial killer in the series TaxiDriver (2021). With an academic background in theatre and arts management, she joined the renowned theatre company Playfactory Mabangzen in 2007, working under the leadership of acclaimed director Go Sunwoong. Her career highlights include her tenure as a member of the National Theater Company of Korea and her 2014 win for Best Actress at the 51st Dong-A Theater Awards for her celebrated performance in Hong-do.

Kim Han is a South Korean actor who debuted in 1996. He has appeared in theatre productions including TheEmpireofLight (2016), SnowofMarch (2018) and LesMiserables(2020). He has also acted in films such as A BittersweetLife and television dramas including MrSunshine. From 2018-19, he was a member of the National Theater Company of Korea.

Kim Jung-hoon as Ko Song-uk
Kim Jung-hoon is a versatile actor and dancer who since 2016 has been a core member of Dance Theater Tic (Truth in Creation), a company dedicated to the fusion of movement and drama. His journey began in 1999 with formal acting studies, leading to his 2006 debut with Daehakro Arts Theater, the heart of the Korean theatre scene, where he gained extensive experience as both a performer and production worker. Since 2020, he has successfully transitioned to the screen, appearing in various Korean dramas, films and global media productions.

A consistent fixture of the Daehakro theatre scene, Lee Hong-jae concluded a successful run of the play Set-TopBox at the Myeongdong Theater in Seoul in January. His momentum continues this spring with the upcoming production of My NameisParkCheol-su, scheduled to open in Daehakro in April. Lee was honoured as Best Actor at the fourth Short Drama Festival in 2015.

The Théâtre National de Bretagne (TNB), one of the most prestigious theatres in France, is a major centre for theatrical and choreographic creation.
Led since 2017 by actor and director Arthur Nauzyciel, the TNB now boasts 27 associate artists, a graduate drama school, a cinema and a flagship festival. A true crossroads of disciplines, the TNB presents some of the boldest works, combining theatre, dance, music, cinema and visual arts. Recognised by the French Ministry of Culture as a Centre Dramatique National (National Drama Centre), the TNB develops partnerships around the world and hosts some of the most important events in the contemporary performing arts scene.

Founded in 1950, the National Theater Company of Korea (NTCK) is the leading national theatre institution in South Korea. Producing eight to ten productions each season, the NTCK presents its work at the Myeongdong Theatre, its purposebuilt theatre located in the heart of Seoul. As one of the foremost theatre producers in South Korea, the NTCK consistently creates a broad repertoire ranging from classical to modern works. In collaboration with artists and institutions from abroad, the NTCK explores contemporary issues in productions presented to audiences in South Korea and abroad.

The Hong Kong Arts Festival is a non-profit organisation. Income from ticket sales and government baseline funding can only partially cover the Festival’s costs for presenting and promoting the best performing arts from around the world. The Festival can only continue its work thanks to the generous support of its donors. Please support the Festival Donation Scheme so we can continue to present world-class international and local artists as well as offering diverse outreach and education activities.
The Hong Kong Arts Festival is a recipient of the HKSAR Government’s Art Development Matching Grants Scheme. Part of the Festival’s sponsorship and donation income will benefit from a dollar-for-dollar match by the Government.* Donations of any amount will make a difference, and are greatly appreciated!
