We are proud to present America at the Crossroads: The GUITAR and a Changing Nation, the first nationally traveled exhibition ever hosted at the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum. This milestone exhibition reflects our commitment to bringing exceptional experiences to Palm Beach County while connecting local history to the broader American story. Education remains at the center of our mission. Throughout the season, we will welcome thousands of students to the Museum through field trips, hands-on learning experiences, and engaging programs that bring history to life. From inspiring young learners to offering lectures, workshops, and programs for adults, we are committed to making history accessible and exciting for every generation. PL AN YOUR VISIT The Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum is located on the second floor of the restored 1916 Historic Courthouse, 300 North Dixie Highway, in downtown West Palm Beach. Across the street is the modern courthouse. There are street meters, a public lot, and garage parking near the museum. Visitors should check in at the Museum entrance on the second floor.
MUSEUM HOURS Monday – Saturday, 10:00 am–4:00 pm. Closed major holidays.
MUSEUM TOURS & EXPERIENCES The Museum is self-guided. Visitors will be welcomed by a docent, receive an overview of the exhibits, and enjoy a short presentation on the evolution of the historic building.

FEATURED EXHIBITION January 9, 2027 - June 30, 2027 America at the Crossroads: The GUITAR and a Changing Nation Admission: $12 | Free for members and visitors under 18 America at the Crossroads: The GUITAR and a Changing Nation, a nationally touring exhibition from the National GUITAR Museum, tells more than 200 years of American history through an instrument that became an enduring part of American culture. 40 instruments, accompanied by photographs, video, and historical interpretation, follow the guitar across generations of American life. From early Spanish instruments to the acoustic and electric guitars that transformed popular music, visitors will see how the guitar evolved alongside changes in technology, industry, politics, and American culture. The guitar crossed communities and musical traditions, gave musicians a powerful means of personal and political expression, and evolved alongside the technologies used to make, record, and experience music. Through the instruments and the stories behind them, America at the Crossroads reveals how the guitar both reflected a changing nation and became part of the cultural changes taking place around it.

COMMUNIT Y HISTORY EXHIBITION SERIES Our Community. Our History. Throughout the year, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County partners with local communities, scholars, artists, and cultural organizations to present exhibitions that broaden our understanding of the county’s past. Each exhibition opens with a public reception celebrating the community and stories featured in the exhibition. Hispanic Heritage Exhibition: September 15 – October 15, 2026 Opening Reception: Tuesday, September 15, 2026 | Time: 5:30 pm–7:30 pm Developed with local business leader Dina Rubio, co-founder of Latin Quarter WPB, Escribiendo Nuestra Historia celebrates Hispanic entrepreneurs and business leaders whose work has contributed to the economic and cultural life of Palm Beach County. Black History Exhibition: February 1 - 27, 2027 Opening Reception: Wednesday, February 3, 2027 | Time: 5:30 pm–7:30 pm Explore the people, places, and traditions that have shaped Black musical history in the region. Women’s History Exhibition: March 1 – 31, 2027 Opening Reception: Wednesday, March 3, 2027 | Time: 5:30 pm–7:30 pm This exhibition explores how women have shaped the civic, cultural, and economic life of Palm Beach County, connecting their historical contributions to the experiences and perspectives of women in the community today. Featured panelists will include: Beth Rudin DeWoody, Sarah Criser Elwell, Katrina Long-Robinson, Gina Sabean, and Amanda Schumacher. CELEBRATING 90 YEARS The Story Behind the Collection Since 1937, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County has collected, preserved, and shared the stories that define our community. As the Society celebrates its 90th anniversary, this special season explores not only the collections themselves, but also the people, partnerships, and preservation efforts that have shaped them over nearly nine decades. Anniversary Exhibition September 2027 – May 2028 Drawn entirely from the Historical Society’s collections, this anniversary exhibition traces the organization’s evolution through photographs, archival records, and artifacts. Visitors will discover how the collection has grown and how it continues to preserve Palm Beach County’s history for future generations. Opening Celebration • Meet Local Historians • Exhibition Tours • Collection Highlights • Behind-the-Scenes Experiences Anniversary Programs Celebrate the Historical Society’s 90th anniversary through special programs that provide a closer look at the work behind the collections. Throughout the season, visitors can tour the Archives and Reading Room, meet curators and historians, participate in Community Archiving Days, and learn how local history is preserved, researched, and shared. Operating largely behind the scenes, these trailblazers significantly transformed women’s roles in the workplace, the home, and the advancement of civil rights. May 12, 2027 Mike McGinness and Jeff Davies Florida: A History In Pictures From St. Augustine’s ancient stone forts to the Everglades, this photographic account brings Florida’s rich history to life. THE POWER OF ORDINARY PEOPLE Stories of Rescue explores the choices ordinary people made to protect those persecuted during the Holocaust, demonstrating how individual acts of courage and compassion can shape history. Through historical accounts and interactive experiences, the exhibition encourages visitors to reflect on the importance of standing up for others. During select weeks in September and October, the Historical Society will partner with Mobile Museums of Tolerance to offer expanded educational programming for students and the public. In early 2027, the exhibition will evolve into Stories of Courage, highlighting Palm Beach County residents whose actions demonstrate leadership, service, and moral courage. Designed by legendary naval architect Ted Geary and built for an heiress, the 122-foot yacht features rich varnished teak, shining brass, and Parisian leaded-crystal windows. Mariner III offers an authentic taste of America’s Golden Age of yachting. Enjoy live music, curated cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres as we drift through Palm Beach history and stunning sunset views. ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING May 26, 2027 Time: 5:30 pm–7:30 pm Location: Historical Society of Palm Beach County The Historical Society’s Annual Membership Meeting brings members together to review the year’s accomplishments, introduce new members of the Board of Governors, and recognize individuals whose leadership has advanced the Society’s mission. The meeting also includes presentation of the Society’s highest honors. Judge James R. Knott Historical Contribution Award Established in 1989, the Judge James R. Knott Historical Contribution Award recognizes individuals and organizations whose work has made a lasting contribution to preserving, documenting, interpreting, and sharing Palm Beach County history. Fannie James Pioneer Achievement Award Established in 2003, the Fannie James Pioneer Achievement Award honors individuals and organizations whose work has advanced the understanding and preservation of Palm Beach County’s pioneer heritage. Nominations are welcomed from the public, previous recipients, and historical organizations throughout Palm Beach County.

ARCHIVES & RESEARCH Since its founding in 1937, the Historical Society has ser ved as the principal repository for Palm Beach County’s historical photographs, documents, and artifacts. Today, the collection includes materials spanning the pioneer era, the Addison Mizner Collection, the Palm Beach Post photographic archives, and thousands of community donations. Since 2008, the restored Historic 1916 Palm Beach County Courthouse has been home to much of the archives, the Historical Society, and its Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum. This venue allows the HSPBC to share key pieces of the collection with the public through exhibitions and educational programming. As the collection continues to grow, it reflects the diverse people, places, and experiences that have shaped Palm Beach County. 1916 S O C I E T Y The 1916 Society is the Historical Society of Palm Beach County’s leadership giving society. Named for the year the Historic 1916 Courthouse was completed, it recognizes donors whose annual support strengthens the Society’s mission to collect, preserve, and share Palm Beach County’s history. Annual gifts beginning at $10,000 provide critical support for the Historical Society’s Archives, helping preserve millions of photographs, documents, and artifacts while expanding access for researchers, students, and the community. Members enjoy year-round opportunities to connect with the Society through private tours, special events, and behind-the-scenes experiences.
