Page 1

WELCOME

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Board of Governors, the Professional Team, and our dedicated Volunteers of the Historical Society of Palm Beach County (HSPBC), I am pleased to present our 2025-2026 Season Guide. As you will see, we have an exciting season planned with programming and exhibitions for everyone to enjoy!

Many events connect with our Grand Exhibition, opening in November, at the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum. Sunshine Cinema: Florida in Film will explore how Florida’s landscapes, people, and identity have shaped and been shaped by the film industry and the state's impact on storytelling and history on the silver screen.

I am thrilled to announce the 2025 Archival Evening Honorees, Frances and Jeffrey Fisher of Palm Beach, whose dedication and service to our community is exceptional.

The Historical Society of Palm Beach County and our Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum are destinations for residents, visitors, and students who seek art, culture and knowledge to enhance their lives. As always, educational opportunities abound for all ages.

Find the most up-to-date information all season long at pbchistory.org. If you are already a member of the HSPBC, thank you for your membership. If you are not currently a member, please consider joining at a level that fits your lifestyle. Our members are at the heart of all we accomplish!

Thank you for your ongoing support as we advance our mission to collect, preserve, and share the history of Palm Beach County. We look forward to you making history with us!

The Historical Society of Palm Beach County honors the life and legacy of Pat Johnson, whose recent passing leaves a profound void in our community. Pat was not only a passionate supporter of history and education, but also a steadfast advocate for preserving the stories that shaped Palm Beach County.

Her generosity supported educational programs, exhibitions, and outreach initiatives that will continue to inspire and impact future generations. Pat’s warmth, insight, and unwavering belief in the power of history to inspire made her an integral part of our family.

GRAND EXHIBITION

NOVEMBER 14, 2025 – MAY 30, 2026

Sunshine Cinema: Florida in Film

Did you know that Florida was an epicenter for filmmaking long before Hollywood? In the early 20th century, Jacksonville thrived as a silent film hub, drawing directors and studios from across the country. Since then, Florida’s diverse geography has continued to attract filmmakers. From Palm Beach County’s starring roles in Donnie Brasco, Empire of the Ants, Caddyshack, and Baywatch to statewide productions like Jaws II, Scarface, and Apollo 13, Florida has long shaped and been shaped by movie magic.

The exhibition will feature original artifacts, interactive displays, and rare archival footage that highlight Florida’s unique role as both a setting and a character in film history. Visitors can explore iconic costumes, era-defining soundtracks, and evolving film technologies that brought these stories to life on screen.

OPENING NIGHT

It will also evoke the nostalgia of drive-in movie nights under the stars. There will be a $12 admission fee to enter the Grand Exhibition for non-HSPBC members over 18 years of age. School Group Tours include 2 FREE teacher admissions to the Grand Exhibition per class, up to 25 students.

Stories of Rescue | Courage & Community

The Historical Society of Palm Beach County presents Stories of Rescue, an exhibition highlighting the courage of "upstanders", individuals who took action during the Holocaust in the face of injustice and violence. Featuring personal accounts, rare documents, and interactive materials, the exhibition centers on the story of Eliane Strosberg, a Palm Beach County resident whose parents rescued 239 Jewish children by smuggling them out of Nazi-occupied France to safety in Switzerland. Their bravery offers a powerful local connection to global history and invites visitors to reflect on how the choices of the past can inform our decisions today.

Helmut Koller — Artist in Residence

Each year, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County partners with a contemporary artist to shed fresh light on history through the Artist in Residence program. All artwork will be available for purchase, with 10% of proceeds benefiting the HSPBC.

Helmut Koller is an Austrian-born artist best known for his bold, colorful, and festive animal paintings, which have garnered collectors across America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Raised in the Austrian countryside, Koller trained as a photographer and began his career as the official photographer for the Vienna State Opera. During his seven-year tenure, he photographed legendary performers such as Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and Rudolf Nureyev, and published several books, including Women Over 30, Elektra, and Opera Live.

In pursuit of greater creative freedom, Koller moved to Manhattan and later settled in Palm Beach, where he continues to live and work. In 1987, he transitioned from photography to painting with his first collection, Homage to Egon Schiele. He later explored historic Native American portraits and figurative acrylics before focusing on his now-signature animal paintings in 1997.

Koller's vibrant "new pop" style debuted in Vienna in 1998 and made its U.S. premiere at a gallery at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas the following year. Nowadays the rich and colorful world of Helmut Koller appeals to collectors on four continents.

I fell in love with Palm Beach the moment I arrived over forty years ago. The sunshine and the absence of winter drew me in, but it’s the international spirit and vibrant artist community that made me stay. Establishing my studio in West Palm Beach connected me to a place that continues to inspire and feel like home.

Surfing Florida: A Photographic History

June 22, 2026 – September 30, 2026

Surfing Florida: A Photographic History showcases Palm Beach County’s rich surfing heritage through photographs, rare artifacts, antique boards, and contributions from more than 100 acclaimed surfing photographers. Provided by the Surfing Florida Museum, the exhibition traces the sport’s evolution locally, from surfing at The Breakers in 1919 to Lucille Vanderbilt’s 1957 board, one of the first made of fiberglass, and a 1948 Bob Simmons balsa wood board, ridden at the Worth Avenue Pier. The exhibition also explores a landmark 1960s legal case that overturned local surfing bans, helping to preserve the sport’s future in Florida.

Birth of The Endless Summer

June 30,

2026

Catch the exclusive screening of Birth of The Endless Summer, the captivating documentary that dives into the untold story behind the surf culture revolution. Travel back to a golden age of adventure as filmmaker Richard Yelland unveils how one chance encounter shaped the sport, the lifestyle, and the legend.

June is nationally recognized as LGBTQ+ Pride Month, commemorating the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City and standing as a powerful affirmation against discrimination and violence. In June 2026, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County will honor the resilience, contributions, and milestones of the LGBTQ+ community by highlighting key moments of progress in the ongoing fight for equality.

Benjamin Franklin: Legend, Legacy, and the Making of an American Icon

July 1, 2026 – August 31, 2026

More than a founding father, Benjamin Franklin was a printer, inventor, diplomat, and enduring symbol of the American spirit. Frank Eberling

For more than 125 years, Florida has inspired authors and filmmakers. In the early 1900s, the Sunshine State was a filmmaking capital, producing hundreds of silent films. Some of Hollywood’s later hits, though inspired by Florida stories, were not always filmed here. Frank Eberling has made over 3,500 film and television programs, as writer, producer, director, or cinematographer. He taught college for twenty-six years and alongside Burt Reynolds for ten years at the Burt Reynolds’ Institute for Film & Theatre. His numerous awards include a CINE/Golden Eagle, an EMMY®, and the first Florida Governor’s Screenwriting Competition.

MARCH 11, 2026

Eliot Kleinberg

Topic: Hypocrite's Row

Location: Historical Society of Palm Beach County Time: 5:30 - 7:00 pm

In the 1920s South Florida, Prohibition was a joke. Along the open coastline just a few hours’ boat ride from the British Bahamas, wealthy society swells, gangsters, and tourists paid handsomely to drink. Since it was established in 1937, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County has been the principal repository for the archival materials and threedimensional artifacts that document the area’s history. The process of cataloging the growing collection began with the first donation, a black-and-white glass plate negative of an island street scene from West Palm Beach attorney A. Stanley Bussey. This gift started what has become a remarkable collection representing the cultures, communities, failures, and successes of life in Palm Beach County.

The collection includes textiles, artwork, ceramics, and Mizner Industries creations, alongside a robust archive of photographs, manuscripts, letters, diaries, and ephemera. Collectively, these materials illustrate Palm Beach County’s cultural, architectural, and social evolution.

Since 2008, the restored Historic 1916 Palm Beach County Courthouse has been home to much of the archives, the Historical Society, and its Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum. This venue allows the HSPBC to share key pieces of the collection with the public through exhibitions and educational programming.

Today, the Historical Society’s collection continues to grow, safeguarding the diverse and ever-evolving story of Palm Beach County for future generations.
