Calling young writers!
F
AreWeLL APriL, you were a tricky month for me, personally, and i am ready to start afresh with May. Saying that, i found it a struggle to fit everything into Ht, sometimes page number restraints thwart me. Unfortunately Travels With… has had to take a break until June, plus a great article on the Maleny Men's House, and a Montville bookstore making a difference – so look out for the next edition! May’s Ht, as you may have guessed, is chock-a-block. there are so many articles and stories, i haven’t space for the customary ‘Mother’s day gift ideas’. But if you’re stuck for inspiration, drop me an email and i will happily recommend venues, shops and more! Now it’s time to let you know about a new initiative i am VerY excited about. i am pleased to announce our inaugural Hinterland Times Young Writer of the Year Award. Because, what better place than a community newspaper to encourage and promote a love of writing? Full details are on page 18, but the award is for 11-17year-olds, to write up to 600 words on ‘A day in the Life’ – any genre of prose acceptable. the winner will receive $100, a front cover and their story published, with two runners up receiving $50 each, sharing the cover and subsequent publication of their stories.

there will also be three Highly Commended writers, whose work will also be published – and all will receive framed certificates. the closing date for submissions in June 30, so you have nearly two months to write something, with the winners announced in the August edition of Ht. in other news, i found out recently that i have been nominated, alongside my estimable right-hand colleague, Karen Muir, in the Glass House Small Business Awards. if you feel you would like to vote for us in the ‘Glassies’, please visit Andrew Powell’s website (andrewpowell.com.au), click on Vote Now and select Maleny employees to find Karen, or Montville employees for me. (Anyone who knows me knows my regular ‘office’ is a certain café in Montville, where i seem to be more productive than my proper office!) i’ve no room left to share everything in this edition, but with a feature film happening in Maleny, a Nepalese adventure, A Star is Born fundraiser, poetry, letters, local entertainment, a history of humble pineapple farms and food news, there’s plenty here! enjoy.

began in 1921, with previous winners including Jon Molvig, William Pidgeon, Nora Heysen and del Kathryn Barton. “i like to express the beauty in life,” continued Satya, “particularly the human form in portraits.” Satya is also curator of the biannual obi Art Prize Queensland, which will have its second competition this year. Spida’s story is different, but just as interesting. A painter and handyman for years, he was living on the Gold Coast and came up to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland for his honeymoon, the timing of which proved serendipitous. “We looked at some real estate while we were in town, and the lease on a property here expired on the same day as our house on the Gold Coast.” then, about six years ago, Spida was asked to play a jail inmate for a day by a friend. “Can’t think why they’d cast me as that!” he laughed. “i turned up, they started filming, then they asked me afterwards to come along for the next three weeks! After that i started doing small parts in adverts, a tV series, then feature films. i also directed a couple of ads and started writing. “i wrote and produced a short film a few years ago, which was well received, and so i decided to write a feature, which i’ve been doing for the past three years. there were hiccups with the finances, so we’ve now gone with incredibly generous private funders, and we’re looking at filming for six weeks, starting in July.” Satya interjected, “Watching Spida go through the process, from sitting over a coffee saying, ‘i’m going to
write a movie’, to actually getting the backing, the director and the actors – i take my hat off to his consistency and passion. “to take it from an idea to see it happen with the people he has… that was one of the reasons for doing his portrait for the Archibald.” Spida said, “When we started talking about this, Satya had a role and i was the lead, but it keeps stepping up. Now i have a bit part and Sayta…” they both laughed and shrugged their shoulders. the film is called Patched, and centres around a small town and a local outlaw motorcycle club. “it’s a dig at the government,” explained Spida. “New laws come in which cause local members to lose their business because they’re tagged ‘criminals’ because of their business. “the law causes a reaction, which then cements the government’s belief. But they create the reaction.” Spida believes biker clubs (“i don’t like the word ‘gangs’”) have been portrayed incorrectly. “About $400 million is spent on biker laws, but only $100 million on domestic violence – there’s something very wrong there.” the film has attracted the attention of some impressive names in the industry, with Steve Mann (Blue Heelers) on board as director and actor Gary Sweet in one of the main roles. “Gary is happy to play a bikie, as he usually plays a policeman,” said Spida with a big smile. one of the main cast members was in Sons of Anarchy, Spida added, “and actress Kim Wilson has also put her hat in the ring.” the list continues to impress, with Uncle Jack Charles, tony Nixon, don Bridges and Mirko Grillini all joining the cast. “the greatest pleasure out of the process for me, is the willingness of major actors to come on board and help me fulfil my dream to make this movie,” shared Spida. “i think we’ve created a family atmosphere with this film.” Support has also come from closer to home, with local businesses on board through sponsorship and the police are also supportive of the project. “We did a post for being involved in a film in Maleny and over 1000 people applied. We have a few locals involved in acting and behind the scenes, which is great.” the next few months will be busy and rewarding for these two friends, and Spida and Satya seem to almost express amused surprise at everything that has transpired of late - but with their tenacity, passion and humour, it doesn’t surprise me at all.

Margaret and her buffalo adventure Margaret Thompson is a spritely, energetic woman with eyes that look to the future with excitement. As someone who has lived all her life on the Hinterland, she has seen and been a part of driving wide-ranging changes and innovations in her industry, but changing the farm over to water buffalo was a leap of faith.

ArGAret tHoMPSoN and her late husband, Mal, had Guernsey cows to begin with, but then Mal wanted to do something different. “He was always innovative and trying new things before anyone else.” Mal used fowl manure to build up soil structure and fertility and irrigated different pasture types; while this is common-place now, it was a new practice then. Mal was also a founding member of Barung Landcare. “originally, Mal and i looked into camels, but they need drier country. We had tried goats when the kids were little. But in the end we decided to go with water buffalo. Mainly because it was different and a niche market.” the thompsons headed to darwin to look at the buffalo at the government-run experimental Farm in the Northern territory. “We might have got cheap tickets up to darwin but the trip home cost us $20,000, as we bought the first of our water buffalo!” Margaret laughed. “We began milking water buffalo in 2006. there wasn’t much milk to start with and we have been building the herd since then. We have 25 to 30 cows in milking at the moment. But our herd is around 120 including cows, calves and steers.

We do our best to farm as environmentally responsibly as possible. “He passed away in 2016, but we have decided to persevere. My family and i are working to keep Mal's dream alive, and i think it is important for my grandkids to see a future in farming.” Margaret was the first girl in Queensland to study agriculture in high school, which led her to work with Landcare as a State and National representative. in 2009, Margaret was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to study water buffalo in Argentina, UK, USA, italy and Bulgaria. this educational tour gave Margaret the belief that water buffalo was a worthwhile and growing industry. the knowledge she gained has led to the herd she has today, built up from five original heifers. the beasts are used for both meat and milk production. “our milk has always gone to trevor Hart at Cedar St Cheese, who makes mozzarella, haloumi and burrata. one of the best mozzarella cheese makers around and he has won a number of awards for his cheese,” Margaret explained. Marcus from Maleny Cheese was a keen early supporter, wanting to try new things and as an artisanal Swiss cheese maker he was well placed to develop products for the local market from buffalo milk. “then Maleny Cheese had their fire and could no longer take our milk, just when we got production going well. it was a real spanner in the works,” Margaret said. “So, now it also goes to Karen at Little White Goat who is making a Persian feta with it. She makes it with roasted wattle seeds that are an indigenous bush food, herbs and sunflower oil and it is delicious,” Margaret said with relish. “So from there we decided to do our own label and now we are Maleny Buffalo. the iGA has been selling our fresh buffalo meat so now they are selling our cheese too, soon we will be adding a range of salamis. rob outridge from Maleny iGA needs a medal for everything he and his team do for local producers. “We have been a part of the Maleny iGA Local Market days where producers come and have a stall in the store with samples for the customers. everyone was saying what a beautiful feta it was,” Margaret smiled. “Buffalo and goats produce less milk than a dairy cow, so it costs more to produce the cheeses. Agricultural shows, with their ballyhoo and eclectic mix of rustic exhibits, have long been the highlight of the social calendar in many Australian country towns, and nobody knows more about them than Maleny’s own Monica Skerman.
by Judy Fredriksen
S
He’S BeeN tHe familiar face in Maleny Newsagency since 1987, always quick with a friendly jibe as you pick up your newspaper or magazine. But many locals may not be aware that Monica Skerman has not only been a mainstay of the Maleny Show for 40 years, she has also been an elected delegate of Queensland Ag Shows, the peak body for the Agricultural Show Societies in Queensland (all 127 of them!) for ten years. Born and raised on a farm near esk, Monica was introduced to the world of agricultural shows by her father at a very young age. “dad was very involved when i was growing up. He entered prime cattle, he was a steward and then he became president of the esk show. So i was around shows all my younger years,” says Monica. After moving to Maleny in 1975 with her husband, Fraser, who was also involved with shows, Monica didn’t know anyone and thought volunteering at the show would be a good way to meet people. “i started out buttering bread,” she smiles. “then i went up to help steward the dairy cattle.” Monica spent many years as a dairy steward at Maleny before becoming a member of the executive. on a trip to the Brisbane exhibition (ekka) one year, she was asked to help out “for the day” in the illawarra cattle section. “Fraser had been helping people for 33 years at the ekka and through all the different shows, i was known...” Monica ended up ‘filling in for a day’ for 12 years. eventually, Monica found herself on the board of

Queensland Ag Shows, organising competitions for young judges and paraders – something she delights in. the aim of these competitions is to develop the judging and parading skills of young people to ensure a selection of experienced judges for future agricultural shows. the young judges have to justify the reasons for their choice, thus improving their communication and presentation skills. “this is where we get our next judges from. once a competitor wins a national title or even state, they are entitled to become an associate judge or a judge.” Young judges and paraders is just one of the
competitions run by Queensland Ag Shows. they also seek out future leaders with the Marsh rural Ambassador Award. this is for young people who symbolise the rural spirit – people with vitality who are forward thinking and with a passion for the land and local agricultural shows. Another is the challenge for the Queensland Country Life Miss Showgirl. this is not a beauty pageant; the winner must demonstrate a genuine interest and knowledge of rural Queensland and have a keen awareness of the contribution that women make to our rural societies. Several young people from the Sunshine Coast region have been successful in these competitions, a fact that Monica finds very gratifying. “When they win i don’t know who gets more excited… them or me! “Some of the young people end up getting a paying job, especially the paraders in stud beef and dairy. People employ them and let them go out and train and lead their cattle at shows.” the judging competition is not just for cattle though, it extends to the cooking section as well, and winning the best ‘dark rich fruit cake’ is the most coveted prize of all, apparently. And in an era of equal rights, the blokes can be fiercely competitive. “it’s all about bragging rights!” she chortles. in multi-cultural Australia, the original purpose of agricultural shows is still relevant in today’s society. “the shows are now going back in time to bring their culture in. it’s all going back to education, where your food comes from,” Monica shares. The Maleny Show’s Gumboot Ironman competition is a test of skills for young farmers
Many children and adults do not know things like how cotton seed is processed to become the clothes we wear, so last year, Queensland Ag Shows displayed boxes of grain, wool and cotton at the ekka so city folk could see the raw product. in the same vein, “the Maleny Show invited local producers to show their product, for example beef and honey, in our local ‘Paddock to Plate’ section. A lot of shows are adopting that”. despite droughts and floods, the agricultural shows are still going strong; the numbers have not dropped in the last year and schools are becoming more involved. “Maleny Show would be the biggest community-backed show. during our setting up week, we provide lunch for 40 or more people nearly every day. the high school students bake a lot of the cakes for the volunteers for the week before the show. “A lot of schools have cattle and they travel to show them. there are four or five schools in Brisbane. Some even have meat sheep and alpacas. “Newcomers (to Maleny) come down to help just to meet people. they say there’s a pride in saying ‘we helped to do that’.” Monica’s message to those readers who may never have experienced an agricultural show is: “Maleny has the nicest grounds and one of the best pavilions – just come along, put your name down and get to meet the people in this town. You will be welcome with wide open arms!”
Monica Skerman and the Maleny Show Society Executive have been planning the Maleny Show since June last year

Nepal
Shedding the light on
Alex Fullerton (pictured right) is no stranger to supporting women in business; many know her through her successful operation of the Sunshine Coast Women Entrepreneurs organisation. However, her recent visit to Nepal with Shed the Light was a trip with a difference. Her first time travelling to Kathmandu since 1991 and with her two children alongside.
by Angela reedman-Polinski
A
Lex FULLertoN has recently returned from a one-month adventure in Nepal, sharing support and resources through a Shed the Light project to empower local women in business, and she decided to take her children on this journey. “i felt it was the right time. the kids are getting older and before they move away, i wanted to enjoy another holiday with a purpose and treasure the moments that we have together.” Alex and the family spent the first week together in Kathmandu and then daughter ella joined the Annapurna Circuit trek and son Flynn hiked to the famous Mount everest Base Camp. “this trip started when ella developed a school project while attending Glasshouse Christian College last year, fundraising under the $5 Make a difference project. She raised funds in a tin to collect money via the school and a local hairdressing salon, Follow Me Hair, in Glasshouse. “together they raised over $100 which ignited the spark of supporting the village further by visiting in person.”

Before departure, Alex called on the community to offer donations of personal hygiene supplies, warm clothes, school and office supplies and cash. “We were overwhelmed with people’s kindness in cash and goods donations. dental excel Beerwah supplied four cartons of toothpaste for the children of the village, who we taught to care for their own teeth by brushing regularly down by the river. “My house began filling up with warm handknitted beanies and coats, paper, pens, books and toothbrushes. We managed to get it all through our flight with just one kilogram of excess baggage, so that was a relief! “When we arrived, the contrast between the old Kathmandu and the new was striking, with electronics now being cheaply available and internet accessible in the city via hotspots.” Alex marvelled at how so much had changed and yet so much had remained unchanged outside of the city. “i watched as an elephant handler, a ‘mahout’, strolled through the bush on the back of a domestic elephant carrying logs, while he thumbed through his mobile phone. “We still saw a lot of homeless people and people with disabilities begging on the street. it is a stark contrast to our everyday lives here and a long way

wanted to support them to begin making full tunics and pants outfits to practise sewing and then branch out into selling them later. it sounds like the trip of a lifetime and has inspired Alex to return at some point and offer support again. “one of my favourite people on the trip was a barefoot 97year-old man who i called ‘Pa’. He told me many tales, including how he had settled the village when he found this particular crook in the river and decided it would be the right place to settle. “the most striking story was of his battle in his early 90s with a brown bear which took one of his eyes and badly scarred his abdomen. i could have listened to him all day, he was fascinating, and it was an amazing adventure.

from the ‘voluntourism’ perceptions and guided tours. Working on a Shed the Light project developing women’s empowerment, Alex and ella worked within the village to get to know the women and children and provide hands-on support at a grassroots level, offering their skills along with fair and equitable donations. “Sleeping on a beaten earth floor in our sleeping bags became our new normal. We pitched a tent on the verandah to maintain privacy and to keep safe from the tigers and brown Nepalese bears around the village. the camp has no running water and no drinking water, so they collected water as required. their food was basic village food, nutritious vegetables and rice without all the usual Western food influences. “We met the most wonderful people and got to see the work of Shed the Light in action. our interpreters and guides, Anish and Phebika, were once the orphans that the charity supported and raised to be a part of the village. “Anish Shahi has developed his skills and created his own freelance photography business and provided all of the professional level photographs from our trip at just 23 years of age. the women work on old pedal-powered sewing machines and create reusable sanitary pads which are bought locally and distributed to other villages through a personal hygiene education program. “the sewing project is developing women’s business acumen by teaching them the hands-on skills to create an income, manage expenses, do bookkeeping and manage risks such as walking alone at night. one of the barriers that the women worked to overcome was the language differences. While there is a little Nepalese spoken in the village, the locals are from all different areas
and dialects. ella and Alex shared pencils with the children and helped them practise writing their names in english, drawing and just enjoying the fun of happily colouring-in. “i enjoyed watching ella teach the children about make up too as they keenly watched her with fascination applying different creams and applications. She also taught them how to re-use the offcut fabrics to make hair scrunchies as another form of income. Before departing, Alex and ella haggled in Hetauda to secure good prices for a new sewing machine, a desk and fabric supplies for the women to grow their business. “it was amazing how much we could fit in a tuk-tuk! New restaurant for Kondalilla
K
oNdALiLLA eCo reSort’S owner/director, Gene thompson, and his team have worked tirelessly to create a peaceful oasis for retreat and holiday guests in the stunning Sunshine Coast Hinterland. the resort consists of 20 cabins spread over 22 acres of pristine bushland. Kondalilla is a fantastic place to disconnect from the world and just relax. “it’s the ideal getaway for couples, families or friends, said Assistant resort Manager, danielle eaton. “With winter approaching it’s the perfect opportunity to kick back and enjoy your cosy cabin beside a roaring fireplace. We have spa baths or deep baths in each cabin, so there’s no reason not to relax and unwind! Many renovations have taken place within the interior and exterior of each accommodation type. “our treehouses have been freshly painted with new decks, furnishings and renovated bathrooms. New well-lit pathways throughout the property allow you to wander and take in the views and appreciate the native fauna and flora, danielle continued. “You may see wallabies, possums, turtles, lizards and the most incredible bird life around the resort. in the warmer months you can cool down after a beautiful bushwalk in one of the two salt swimming pools with newly renovated decks. the most exciting project to date, however, is
the renovation of Kondalilla’s restaurant. “Gene’s vision is becoming a reality as we near the end of the renovations, smiled danielle. “We have a grand opening in early June for Kondalilla restaurant, which boasts a large dining area, private dining space, bar and outdoor area. With the view towards the Kondalilla National Park, this restaurant is sure to become a favourite. “We are adding something different to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, danielle added, “Kondalilla restaurant will be a vegetarian restaurant with seafood and vegan options. the diversity of eateries in the Hinterland allows Kondalilla restaurant to make its own mark. ‘the Heart at Kondalilla’ is the platform for promoting retreats, conferences and workshops held
in the Picnic Creek event space. "We are so excited, as the restaurant adds the next element with its various catering options. Kondalilla now offers the complete package. "We can't wait to welcome people into a natural space where they can truly relax, revive and recharge." Find our more at kondalilla.com or email enquiries to heart@kondalilla.com

Andrew, Chris and Lynn ready to take you on a tour
take time for a tour L
YNN ANd ANdreW Fallon started Mystic Mountain tours in 2003. With a range of vehicles in their fleet, and caring drivers, they offer a chance to explore the breathtaking landscape and beautiful towns in the idyllic Hinterland and they now also have a new range of tours for locals. “We called our business Mystic Mountain tours because the ancient Glasshouse Mountains inspired us and we wanted to share this special place with others,” explained Lynn. “in 2000 we moved from Bundaberg where we had been partners in a building business,” continued Andrew. “Visiting Lynn’s family who had moved to Montville made us want to make some life-changing decisions.” So what can you expect on a Mystic Mountain Hinterland tour? “For tourists we provide an authentic guided tour where they can discover the gourmet delights of the region, with locally grown and handmade specialties, unparalleled cheeses, ice creams, sourdough bread or a bushtucker walk in the rainforest. this is just a sample of what we can offer,” said Lynn. “these food tours meet at the Maleny iGA or Montville information Centre; custom transfers can also be added by arrangement.” For guests staying at local hinterland accommodation,
take the time to sample local craft beers, local-roasted coffee, guided whisky tastings, a visit to the vineyard and let someone else drive! “We are also happy to explore possibilities for you to have a unique itinerary for small or large groups celebrating special occasions or with a theme or interest in mind,” Lynn added. “our new tours, just launched, are for locals to enjoy short breaks, to travel in comfort with their own hinterland company,” smiled Lynn. “We have a tour every month to inspiring and interesting destinations, day trips, short stays and even a week to outback Queensland. to find out more about these exciting adventures ask for the calendar of tours or some brochures. “oh, and ask about the new Australian Story tour which showcases the unique nature of the Sunshine Coast, it takes visitors to places they may not find on their own.” it’s good to know there is a local business offering so much to the community; tours, transfers and charters, from travelling to the airport, or school excursions, to outings for social clubs. Andrew and Lynn clearly love what they do, so hop on board and let the journey begin! Visit: mysticmountaintours.com.au or call Lynn on 0400 086 877
Valuing your neighbourhood By Jedha dening
“t
o KNoW WHAt’S going on in your local area and hear people talk about it, is a really good thing,” said Annie Aitken, 25-year resident of Kureelpa and 15-year member of Kureelpa-dulong Neighbourhood Watch (NHW). this NHW group has been operating for 28 years, the overriding philosophy being to work together as a community to reduce crime and enhance community safety. the members also focus on causes that are important to the community. Annie, who is Kureelpa NHW zone coordinator, said, “Because we care about the community as a group, we’re trying to do things like put crossings in for the Blackall range independent School. Seeing kids trying to cross the road here and the traffic that comes flying through, it’s a real problem. “We have the police on our side too. We try to get them coming to NHW meetings to give us a talk. And they usually put something in our newsletter about what’s going on in the area.” Jack Foley, NHW acting area coordinator, said, “When residents have concerns, they can bring them to us and we can deal with the police, local councillors, the council road engineers, and members of state government. “that’s the good thing about NHW, if it’s just you as an individual you can have trouble getting anywhere, but under the banner of NHW as a community group, we have a foot in the door so we can talk about the issues and try to find resolutions.” Although it’s not an official requirement of NHW, fostering social connection between local residents is very important to the Kureelpa-dulong NHW group. in addition to the annual Christmas get together, there are plans to create a social events calendar such as movie nights, kids discos, and regular sausage sizzle afternoons.
GENERAL OR ENDURING POWER OF ATTORNEY There can be a multitude of reasons why you will need someone else to act on your behalf – you may be travelling overseas where communication is difficult or you may be experiencing a serious health problem such as lengthy hospital stays or loss of mental capacity. This is where a Power of Attorney comes in. The grant of a Power of Attorney can either be made as a general grant for a particular purpose and for a particular time frame as long as the purpose of the grant does not relate to medical or personal matters; or as an enduring grant for an unlimited time frame for financial, personal and health matters. It is important to distinguish between a grant of power of attorney and a will. A grant of power of attorney can only be used when the person granting the power is alive. Should that person die, then the grant of power of attorney ceases to be of effect and the Will takes over. Everyone should consider appointing someone to act as their enduring attorney. The choice of an attorney should be taken with a lot of care and thought and should be someone you have complete trust in. When appointing someone as your enduring attorney you can specify exactly in which circumstance that person will act as your attorney. An example is the circumstance where you have been assessed by a medical practitioner as having lost capacity. To remove someone as an attorney is also possible by you expressly revoking that power. By appointing an enduring attorney you are protecting yourself against the possibility that should you one day lose capacity to manage your own affairs you will not put your financial position at risk. It is an insurance policy worth having!
Jack Foley and Annie Aitken champion the Neighbourhood Watch scheme
Annie shared they would love to see more residents attend the meetings. “We do send out nearly 600 newsletters to people in dulong and Kureelpa every three months and it’s always great to see new faces.” You can also search Facebook for ‘Kureelpa dulong Neighbourhood Watch’, to stay up to date. (the next meeting is May 14.) it’s clear from talking with Annie and Jack that NHW groups are an asset to local communities, fostering a safer, friendlier place to live. NHW groups exist throughout the Hinterland, so get involved – you’ll likely meet some wonderful people too!

oMPASSioNAte CoMMUNitieS Sunshine Coast (CCSC) is an organisation that focuses on building community capacity about a part of life that needs our attention right now - ageing, endof-life and grieving. the CCSC creates opportunities for people to connect on a regular basis and to discuss and take action around this topic that is often overlooked and/or stigmatised. HAt Better PLACe to celebrate international Botanic Garden day on May 26 than your local botanic garden? Just because you might only have a small backyard or apartment balcony, doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy a beautiful garden. this year’s theme ‘Natives Naturally – Small is Beautiful’ focuses particularly on small gardens located in highrise balconies and small backyards. this year’s event is hosted by the Friends of Maroochy regional Bushland Botanic Gardens, in partnership with Sunshine Coast Council and other community groups. it will be a morning devoted to 'helping locals grow more locals' through talks, walks, workshops, demonstrations, displays, free native plant advice, plant sales and refreshments. the event is designed to encourage and support the use of local species in a range of small settings, from courtyards and small suburban blocks to pots and balconies. Special guest presenter is Jerry Coleby-Williams, speaking on 'the 21st Century Cottage Garden'. Numbers are limited for this presentation and workshop/demonstration activities, so bookings via the eventbrite website are essential: eventbrite.com.au/e/natives-naturally-small-isbeautiful-tickets-58343814921

Putting pineapples on the map
REAL ESTATE COMMENT BY MONICA MCLAREN
STATE OF REPAIR – THE INVISIBLE AND THE OBVIOUS When buying a property, it is important to have some safeguards in the contract. In Queensland there are no regulations for a home seller to disclose any information about their property. The emphasis is on the buyer (“buyer beware”) to satisfy themselves through investigations regarding the soundness of the improvements, any pest activity and survey points.
by doug and Cate Patterson Montville History Group
L
oNG roWS oF grey-green spikes once crowned acres of Blackall range slopes. it was postcard pretty, but represented back-breaking work for farmers. this mighty pineapple realm established a multimillion dollar industry, despite its humble beginnings as a mere curiosity. the rough leaf pineapple was introduced to the Queensland colony by Lutheran missionaries based at Nundah, Brisbane in 1838. in 1881, the smooth leaf pineapple was introduced from French Guiana via France and Kew Gardens, London. (it was this variety that became the centre of Queensland’s pineapple boom.) Gillie Warren records that Alf Bowser introduced pineapples to his farm, Lilydale, (on the site of what is now Montville Mountain inn), in the early 1900s with his first commercial crop being shipped to Brisbane in 1906. Before long, the Blackall range was recognised as a premier pineapple-growing district and pineapple farming began to replace citrus as the main fruit crop on the range. Gradually, acres of land along the ‘North Coast Line’ from North Pine to Gympie was turned into pineapple farming. then, in 1916, a returned soldier re-settlement scheme saw hundreds of returned soldiers settled on new farms of between 20 and 40 acres around Beerburrum and Woombye to grow pineapples. Although many failed, others bought failed farms and became more commercially viable. Between 1932 and 1942, pineapple production in Queensland doubled. it doubled again between 1952 and 1956. A large proportion of these crops were produced in the Maroochy Shire and Woombye was recognised as the third largest pineapple producing area in Queensland, both in terms of number of farms and total production. the pineapple was the king of fruit being grown in the ‘North Coast’ hinterland. this remarkable growth led to farmers establishing the Northgate Committee of direction Fruit Marketing Cannery as a cooperative to preserve fruit through canning in 1947 under the brand name of Golden Circle. (Golden Circle was purchased by Heinz in 2009.)

At the same time, post-war tourism saw many more southern visitors attracted to the ‘North Coast’. in 1952, newly elected Mayor of Maroochy Shire, david Low, saw an opportunity to re-brand and promote the pineapple through targeting the tourist market. the Golden Pineapple Week was created and launched in November 1954. the Golden Pineapple Week was a major event even by today’s standards. the program involved sporting competitions, a car rally, a speedboat regatta, a drama presentation, a pioneer’s dinner, street carnivals, a Golden Pineapple Queen Competition, a grand parade of floats carrying entrants followed by a Mardi Gras climaxing in the Pineapple Queen Ball. Local papers actively promoted the week and provided recipes for all things pineapple, including gingerbread, Christmas cake, kofta curry and candied pineapple. there were nine entrants for the Pineapple Queen from: eudlo Palmwoods, Woombye, Montville, Yandina, Maroochy QAtB, North Coast Lifesavers, Nambour Show Society, Maroochydore Sub-Branch of the rSSAiLA (rSL). Montville’s entrant was dell Manley whose brother, ernie , had a pineapple farm on the Western road (Western Avenue) around the start of what now is Manley drive. Miss Yandina, Pat rafter, was crowned the Golden Pineapple Queen. Although Montville missed out on the Golden Pineapple Queen, some years later it had its own pineapple celebrity when local farmer, John thirnbeck, decided to farm his pineapples in gumboots only(!); creating a prickly situation for his neighbours (and himself ).

It’s also a good idea nowadays for a seller to have a building inspection (“seller beware”) done prior to listing. Sellers can then decide what areas require attention and what can be left alone. Sellers need to be aware that nearly all homes with a bit of age will have general wear & tear, but some will also have faults that they are not aware of. Termite damage and hidden moisture problems are often invisible to home owners. Under normal contract conditions, the buyers !"#$%&'("!$%#$)%# *"$&! $#(+#$)%,#!&%#-(..!$(./%-# with the professional inspections. Most though, are still in love with the property and are happy to proceed if the sellers agree to rectify any .(0"(/ !"$#+!12$.3# Sellers must be aware that by not being prepared to be reasonable about rectifying any major faults in their home, that they run the risk of losing a current buyer. Future buyers will probably discover the same faults in their investigations as well. This can be where the trouble starts. Because a price for the property has been agreed to in the contract subject to building and pest inspections, often sellers feel they are losing money if they now must pay for any repairs or reduce the contract price. Occasionally there are more delicate negotiations over the seller !0&%%("0#$*#/4#!#&*$$%"#5%&!"-!)#6*.$#$)!"#$)%&%# is over the total sale price! Our recommendation is for any prospective home seller to have a pest and building report carried out BEFORE they put their property on the market. By doing this, they can rectify any faults and reduce the chance of both sides receiving nasty surprises after they have signed a contract. And remember, “Don’t Sign Anything” unless you are certain you are safe. Quote: “Asking the right questions takes as much skill as giving the right answers.” Robert Half

HiLSt At tiMeS the views written in Mungo MacCallum’s column are lucid and perspective, there are just too many times of steady predictable offerings of bile and spleen that are out of place in the relaxed, friendly and informative offerings of a local community newspaper that people have come to accept and know as Ht.

Relax, read a few letters, enjoy a crossword and cartoon, and maybe put pen to paper (finger to keyboard) yourself!
Mungo MacCallum has been around for decades and to my recall has always been a fierce and unrelenting scribe of obvious high and disciplined articulation, but is captive to his own prejudices in my opinion and whilst some readers may accept the resultant vitriol, the offering in the pages of the Ht is an irritation to those not seeking such vitriol.

Lover’s Breakfast
Chance of a Storm
Safely in schools Or in a uniform and guided line, In charge of someone else, Children can warm the heart, It’s good to love Those not your own responsibility.
Marmalade kisses and rain on roses The scent of a woman and rubbing of noses, Mist stalking hills bold branches a’dancing Tangerine fruit ready for lancing. Bare feet meet under the table, Drizzling rain drips from the gable, Coffee steam rises and grabs at the senses A choir of birds sing from the fences. Her wanton gaze hovers with moistened lips sipping Grevillea heads open the nectar is dripping, A turbulent sky thunders above while marmalade kisses paint the colour of love.
Some hours even before The kookaburras start their engines He comes, a long approach and enough of a robust rumble to interrupt sleep; was there the chance of a storm?
They pass, question your smile; their minds engage, With future disruption and a scorn for age, From every flawless face and gathering eye They work towards revenge and build their rage. Best not to entertain the chilling thought That these damp nymphs will harden and pupate, Emerging as teenagers, each with awful cry “Mine is the time of knowledge, and I AM!” Contain your thoughts and let them have their say, Recall the power when you had your day, And when their wings are shed, as fate decrees, Watch them sink to Earth, and chastened, slip away.

A Type of Hallelujah I saw you In that room that night Your eyes tied shut by the lamp light Your book was resting On your chest.
I took you To the county fair I watched you as you brushed your hair And the sun It shined right through me.
I saw the Night-time soldiers march Beneath the landlord’s victory arch And you were Waving flags there too weren’t you.
I stood by The open door I felt my knees fall to the floor And saw my soul Rising to the test.
I held you In the open air I felt the lone electric chair That breathed the Sunlight back inside me.
You held them In your gazing eyes You knew they’d feel no surprise Because you knew They were all Marching to you. © Ben Schubert

U
NFortUNAteLY, most of us are so new to this land, that we literally have no idea what any of those plants are that make up the remnant forests scattered across the hinterland, even in many cases when we’ve been here for several generations… When i was fortunate to start working with these forests about thirty years ago, the tricky bit was where to start with working out what was what? Fortunately there is a little book, called Rainforest Trees and Shrubs and nicknamed the ‘red Book’ (not an old fashioned communist manifesto, i assure you!), that literally holds the key to enabling you to identify so much of our local rainforest flora. Better still there is also an app or computer program that contains all the info from this book and its partner Rainforest Climbing Plants‘the Green Book’, plus the amazing photos of Hugh Nicholson. resources like this certainly help when it comes to identifying and learning more about our wonderful local flora. But wait there’s more, we also have great books like Mangroves to Mountains, Weeds of the Sunshine Coast, Grasses of the Noosa Biosphere and Surrounding Regions, Wildlife of Greater Brisbane, and so many more books and apps at our fingertips that assist us in learning about and engaging with our native flora and fauna. All these books and many more

are available through Forest Heart ecoNursery. Crucial to our living in this land is a need to learn more about it - to know, understand and empathise with our local ecosystems. the first nations people of this land have many tens of thousands of years of living with, understanding and being of this country. People lived within and were part of the Australian ecosystems. ecosystem understanding was fundamental to day-to-day life. We need to remember and come back to this. We do not live outside of nature and we are very much part of and dependent on nature. When we think we are separate, that’s when things can start to fall apart. Before i get carried away on too much of a philosophical tangent – where was i? oh yes, learn about your local flora and or fauna! the trick to learning more about your local flora (that i realised long ago) is you can’t learn everything in the first week. Be happy that with hard work and dedication you may only learn one or two new plants a week, for the first few months, then hopefully the momentum builds like a snowball and you’re an amateur botanist, zoologist, mycologist and ecologist (nature lover) in no time at all! Well, maybe a few years…
Natural Variation
W
e Are ALL probably ’over’ the wet weather but tanks are overflowing and the plants continue to grow. Water-logging could be a problem in heavier soils, but the local plants usually cope until things dry out. For those readers not necessarily familiar with such matters, plants grown from seed often demonstrate variation in growth habit. this has been very evident in specimens of Leptospermum leuhmannii, an attractive shrub from the Glass House Mountains, listed as vulnerable, most likely due to loss of habitat. there are several specimens in the native garden outside the Barung office in Coral St., Maleny. one in particular has a graceful, weeping habit while the others are more upright. it’s certainly not a rainforest plant but can be used as part of an appropriate revegetation project. it comes into its
own, however, in the native garden. the typical open white tea tree flowers of this medium size shrub are attractive to bees and the leaves of course are aromatic when crushed. it’s
striking feature is the bark which is shed in long strips exposing smooth green stems. it lends itself to pruning and a nicely rounded form can readily be created from more upright specimens. it will naturally become upright in a shaded position as it grows towards the light so for a generally more compact form, grow in an open, sunny spot. Since nursery plants are grown from seed their availability at any given time will depend on seed availability. it’s always interesting to note how position can affect growth habit so read plant labels with a degree of scepticism. Nurseries do their best but position, soil type and other factors in the environment will affect plant growth. A small and not especially noticeable tree often used in revegetation projects can be an attractive garden tree.

FeW iSSUeS ago i went on a bit of a gratefulness rant, but i think i forgot to thank the most integral part of the amazing kaleidoscope that is my life, tHe treeS!! it has been an extraordinarily serendipitous journey that has led me to this point where i get to write about trees, visit people on their properties to talk about trees, touch trees, climb trees, shape trees, and sadly sometimes even fell trees when necessary, and sustain myself and family and the several young people that i employ in the process. So, thank you trees, you know who you are.
one of the reasons they grow so well on our plateau is the incredible amount of rainfall we get. We had over 200mm during easter. Unfortunately, it can be too much of a good thing. the trees grow rapidly
Follow ‘aboutthattree’ on Instagram, & Tony Wootton Tree Surgeon on Facebook and quite simply, over-reach themselves. then, when we get heavy rain and a bit of wind the longest parts of some species cannot bear the weight of themselves plus the extra water, and fail. this could just mean a bit of a clean-up, but you do not want it happening over your house, cars, water tank or shed, so go outside now and look for potential hazards. Species especially prone to this kind of failure include all Cypress, Liquidambar, Coral tree, and even the mighty Bunya pine.

From your councillor As many are aware, it will be time for me to hang up my councillor hat on 28 March, next year. Until then, it’s business as usual. We’ve lots to do and less than a year in which to do it! Local government has changed since I was first elected. Today, thriving communities are those that work in partnership with council in smart and creative ways to achieve goals of importance.
This column was written from the wonderful Mary Cairncross Rainforest Discovery Centre. Bob was a dedicated volunteer who was passionate that the reserve continue to grow economically and ecologically. I am delighted that in recent years land adjacent to Mary Cairncross has been purchased through the Environment Levy to help protect and expand the reserve’s important habitat. Most recently the reserve has buzzed about the BioBlitz
Note from the Mayor With our fantastic climate and natural environment, it stands to reason that the Sunshine Coast is a community that loves to be outdoors and active. Research suggests our region has some of the best health outcomes in the nation, while our great outdoors continues to attract growing numbers of local and international visitors for sporting events, conferences and holidays. We love our sport and are home to the Sunshine Coast Lightning – Australia’s most successful start-up national sporting team – and to the Pro Racing Sunshine Coast cycling stars, who are shining internationally. Council is also investing in community sport and recreation facilities like our multi-million-dollar upgrades to the Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex and the Caloundra Tennis Centre, which started recently. These upgraded venues will provide better facilities for local AFL, netball and tennis players at all levels. Council continues to invest in bikeways and coastal pathways and to protect our green space by adding to our environmental landholdings. However you enjoy your lifestyle, the Sunshine Coast is the healthy, smart and creative place to be.

– a community event attended by scientists, artists, First Nations representatives, climbers, volunteers and more than 250 members of the public all focused on finding as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time. Song meters recorded bats, cameras were installed in strangler figs and hundreds of samples were collected. Once these species are verified they will be on show at the Discovery Centre in the Biodiversity: That’s Life exhibition and report will be available in June. This continues Bob’s vision and is a great reason to explore the biodiversity at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and discover more about our natural heritage.
Men’s health in the hinterland Congratulations to the Maleny Men’s Shed as they open their new facility and join the extended brotherhood in men’s business. Hats off to Stan Collard on his vision for this facility. Blacksmithing and the mystery of steam engines give this Shed a point of difference and Shedders the opportunity to expand and impart their knowledge. Great work too by the Mooloolah and Sunshine Valley Men’s Sheds. Along with the Blackall Range Woodies, the facilities and programs created have done wonderful things for men’s health across the hinterland. Congratulations to Michael Waring, of Maleny Men’s House. Michael’s outstanding contribution to men’s health was awarded at the recent Australian Men’s Health Forum in Sydney. For more than 26 years, the Men’s House has been the place for more than 2000 men to meet, get and give support and find friendship in a male environment. Well done to the ladies standing with their men, ensuring that they have spaces and places to enhance their well-being.

I commend the hinterland Chambers of Commerce and business associations for their work driving our local economy, and our Progress Associations for the strong voice they provide to local communities. By partnering with council, they help deliver invaluable infrastructure, while armies of inspiring volunteers are the hands, feet and hearts of the region. Local community groups keep proving if you ‘dream it, you can achieve it’. Maleny Bridge Club and the Maleny Golf Club have delivered facilities against the odds, and the late Joyce Newton’s vision for an indoor aquatic centre is a step closer to fruition now that the pool has a home in the Maleny Precinct. Most recently, Barung Landcare Association joined these achievers, partnering with council to deliver their state-of-the-art environmental education and resource centre. The Sunshine Coast hinterland brims with hardworking, community-minded people and is, in my opinion, the most beautiful part of the region. Let’s keep working together to better the place we love and call home. Thank you for the opportunity to represent you.

What’s happening at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve?
Bloomhill needs us Val and Bryan Hughes lived for 23 years in North Maleny until about two years ago when they downsized to an over 50's village. Bryan recently wrote to HT about Bloomhill Cancer Care, which helps and supports many people across the Hinterland, and which needs our help. Here is Bryan and Val’s story.
T
Hree YeArS AGo my wife Val was told she had ovarian cancer. in the first year after the diagnosis Val underwent chemotherapy on a three weekly regime with a major, major operation mid-year. this first year’s treatment was considered very successful. She was then admitted to a further year’s course of Avastin infusion at three weekly intervals. For all of those two years, Val’s extremely positive and happy attitude (well, relatively happy attitude given the circumstances) was remarkable. At Nambour Hospital and the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, she had lovely caring nurses and an extremely competent oncologist looking after her on every visit. Jokes and smiles all around. then the treatment was over! No more regular supportive visits to the nurses or her oncologist, just blood test reviews every three months. Val had the debilitating feeling of being on her own; that she was cast adrift without any apparent outside support apart from the three monthly checks. it was a terrible feeling of being alone with the underlying thought that cancer can return. Val’s oncologist had suggested that she join Bloomhill Cancer Care at Buderim for post treatment care and support. So Val did just that and was transformed, no longer “almost alone” in the world of post cancer life.
Bruce's
Bloomhill Cancer Care is a world class, leading edge provider of care and support. Val loves the atmosphere, the experienced cancer nurses and all the other professionals, the volunteers, the companionship and fellowship offered by so many other cancer-touched people. She loves the therapy, the yoga classes, the volunteer run café (try their sausage rolls) and the meditation classes. Bloomhill is a unique institution, its type not found elsewhere. it is a not-for-profit, self funded organisation, and funding is falling short of the increasing demand, so much so that Bloomhill is facing the prospect of having to turn clients away when they are so clearly
in need of support. in late February in response to a 5,800 signature ”SaveBloomhill” petition, ted o’Brien, MP for Fairfax, obtained emergency Commonwealth funding of $850,000 over four years. this is good, but it is time now for ongoing government support, for a more sustained commitment, to ensure Bloomhill’s continued existence in this vital field. i ask you to please email your State member and your Federal member, the two health ministers and the Prime Minister himself in this election year. Ask straight out for help for Bloomhill Cancer Care at Buderim.

t’S CroSS CoUNtrY time at the Maleny Community Precinct. the annual Sunshine Coast event, hosted by Maleny Golf Club and MdSrC, comes to Maleny on Sunday May 12. And then follows the more serious Queensland Championships on Sunday July 28.
races kick off at 8am with the 10km open for males and females; and wrap up at 9.50am with under 8s 500m for boys and girls. the program is all done and dusted by 10am.
organisers, Maroochy Athletics Club, expect around 300 keen competitors, ranging from hopeful juniors to dogged seniors with lingering memories of past glories; and who might now be expected to know better. it’s a fun family way to start Mothers’ day. Maleny folk should be proud our Precinct is regarded amongst the finest cross country courses in Australia. reasons for these accolades are compelling. the various routes, ranging from 500m to 10km, across rolling, largely manicured slopes and flats, provide a safe, and rewarding challenge for all skill levels. Hinterland weather conditions are generally favourable. rarely elsewhere, spectators, and anxious parents, can view the whole event. the golfers happily surrender their fairways and roughs to share this wonderful community asset with the wider community. Ample free on-site parking will be managed by friendly rotary volunteers. Coffee and refreshments are available. everyone is welcome to come along and share the energy with runners and onlookers. Self Awareness
W
e Are LiViNG in an age that is producing incredible advances in technology that makes life easier. Wendy Rosenfeldt But is this creating more self realisation or are we becoming less self aware in the process? While there is nothing wrong with social media and electronic devices, it is the insidious spreading of it into all areas of life that causes concern. Smart phones are replacing our memories, creativity and ability to entertain ourselves. instead of allowing the mind to remember the lyrics to an old song, the tendency is to grab the phone and Google it. Before we give ourselves the chance to recall directions, we put our destination into our Sat Nav and blindly following the prompts without needing to use our memories. Playing eye spy or telling stories on car drives, has been replaced by plugging in dVds or games on the iPhone. Mental functions that use the more abstract levels of the mind are becoming less frequent in this age of technological overload. And like anything if we don’t use it we lose it. Busyiness and tiredness also contribute towards this mental weakness and passiveness. When the mind is fatigued, it is limited to the surface levels, a tired mind cannot fathom the more subtle levels of thinking. Conscious living is replaced by “just getting through the day”. Children and teenagers accustomed to always being electronically entertained are finding it harder to sit still and take the time to solve maths problems or articulate their thoughts
creatively. the excitement of playing a computer game or watching tV will keep the mind awake but when they sit to do homework their brain feels sleepy and overwhelmed. Maintaining awareness at more abstract levels is difficult when the mind is over stimulated and tired. At the deepest level, the mind is an infinite ocean of creativity and bliss. the mind finds complete fulfilment at this level. regular experience of this state cultivates inner contentment, improved intuition and refinement of perception. But how can we enjoy this level of being if we never spend any time there. What we consciously perceive as the Self is just the tip of the iceberg. Without Self-knowledge we are like a leaf in the wind buffeted around by society’s expectations, habits and preconditioning from past experiences. in order to become familiar with our deeper self, we have to let go of all the outside stimulation and allow the mind to transcend to the subconscious levels and beyond. transcendental Meditation gives us the opportunity to clear the surface stress and experience inner stillness. Without the constant noise of external stimulation and mental chatter, our intuition and inner directedness can surface. our decisions better reflect our long-term needs rather than coming from a desire for instant gratification and filling the void within. Wendy Rosenfeldt is a Maharishi Ayurveda Practitioner and Teacher of Transcendental Meditation To find out more come to a free introductory talk call Wendy ph 5499 9580/ 0438 507 188.

Restoring balance in times of change
W
e Are LiViNG in a time of change and challenge in many areas of our experience, and this can place an added strain on our health. our bodies as well as our emotions and minds are having to deal with constantly changing effects. As a collective conscious we are all affecting each other. Less reactive thoughts, have a calming effect on our body chemistry and on those around us. events portrayed though the news, social media and the like often stir us up and we can tend to polarise, get angry and hold tight opinions. But really this does no one any good. Most people realise that information that surrounds events and challenges is often biased or incomplete. this constant stimulation to our chemistry taxes the body especially because the average person often doesn’t see how they can influence outcomes. observing what is happening around us from a place of division or polarity, of them, those or us, is only adding to the perpetual conflict that has plagued humanity. Loving intelligent beings everywhere are working to bring about peace and find better ways to live in harmony with all life.

Bright young and old minds are creating technology that keep us moving forward without causing harm to our bodies and the planets wellbeing. We can also support our bodies by simply nourishing the organs that get impacted by stress most profoundly. one such organ is the thyroid. Goji berries have been shown to restore key antioxidant enzymes which the thyroid uses to control oxidative stress. Goji berries have been researched and found to enhance stamina and alleviate low energy levels. Brazil nuts supply the essential ingredient selenium which the thyroid needs to function correctly. About three Brazil nuts per day are adequate to supply this essential nutrient that our Australian soil is deficient in. Lemon Balm made into a tea has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial properties, (perfect for the onset of the colder weather) and it has also been shown to lower blood pressure, calm the nerves and soothe the thyroid. Living your life as an example of loving peace, kindness and faith in the innate goodness of humanity is a bonus to your own health and wellbeing.

Mungo MacCallum
Churchill A
S tHe QUiNteSSeNtiAL warrior Winston Churchill once put it, this is not the end. it is not even the beginning of the end. But it may be the end of the beginning. or, in more contemporary terms, this is where the story really starts. the first two weeks have seen plenty of punching and counterpunching, feints, retreats and manoeuvrings. And of course, they have faced more than the usual slew of distractions. But essentially they have been preliminary skirmishes, testing their various grounds, attempting to determine out what is working and what is being ignored. However, now the battlelines have been set: the electoral rolls have closed, nominations are in, the how-to-vote cards have been finalised, postal voting is underway, Newspoll has tightened, the pre-vote polling has opened and the first debates is sorted. Game on. Both before and after ANZAC day the leaders jetted around the country, promising much but essentially failing to engage, either with each other or, more importantly, the voters. And as a result, a frustrated media had to fill the gap somehow. So enter The Australian’s Simon Benson, taking a wellearned respite from the arduous task of transcribing his “exclusives” at the dictation of the Liberal Party. Benson noticed a Newspoll which found that the dreaded Clive Palmer, far from being hammered into the ground like a tent peg as the Australian had been demanding for most of the decade, was in fact gaining some traction in some marginal electorates, and Benson was aghast at the news. it defied reason, he gasped, he was a man who has been politically discredited, publicly lampooned and legally challenged on more than one occasion. But now he is poised to become a kingmaker. Well, not actually – Benson needs to take a cold shower and go back to the principal job of being a stenographer. For starters, single electorate polls are notoriously unreliable: the national polls give Palmer’s UAP less than 2 per cent, as opposed to the 13 per cent that Newspoll recorded in Herbert – in townsville, the very city where Palmer dudded thousands of workers. And in the unlikely event it was accurate, even Benson admitted that the UAP was not within a bull’s roar of winning the seat, let alone any others.
Palmer may squeak into a senate spot, or conceivably (just) two, but it is a long way from certain – or at least it was until it was revealed that the coalition was planning to swap preferences with the man who once called Scott Morrison Heinrich Himmler. the swap is presumably designed to prop up LNP candidates in the Queensland bush, where several are in deep trouble. the problem, as with all kowtowing to the extremists, is that it could potentially lose more votes than it can gain. Some Libs, and even some Nats, will find it hard to stomach the idea that their party is prepared to get into bed with Palmer. And in any case, could he deliver? Whatever his how-tovote cards may say, the kind of fringe dwellers who will give the UAP their first preferences can hardly be relied on to follow the script, particularly if they are smart enough to know that if they give their second preferences to the LNP, they are effectively voting for the NLP anyway, which obviously they did not intend to do.
And wherever the real support for the UAP may lie, it is a safe bet that it is bleeding more votes from the coalition than from Labor, so legitimising it with a deal is almost certainly counterproductive. But what the hell, ScoMo is desperate enough for anything. He keeps telling us that it is not his decision, it is a matter for the party. Bullshit – he could at least restrain the Libs if he wanted to, as he did with one Nation after the Al Jazeera exposé. And then he insists that any deal has nothing to do with policy, declaring himself a moral vacuum. No principle, or consistency, or any idea of what is to happen beyond May 18. But once you plunge into that chum bucket, it can be bloody hard to get out of it. At the very least it has an ugly look, and one which is not the image of pious pentecostalism Morrison is trying to cultivate. And within his media backers, it will be even more difficult to justify. the Murdoch press has run its holy war against Palmer relentlessly and unceasingly – hectares of newsprint have been deployed to tell the nation that the mogul should be excoriated by all decent citizens. Now it faces the reality that not only has it’s campaigned failed dismally, but its chosen redeemer – the immaculate Morrison – is in league with it’s own antichrist. it will be fascinating to watch the moral absolutist square that circle. they will find a formula, of course – they always do. But the obvious one is simply the power of money, the millions Palmer has already spent to buy influence and the more millions planned. this, at least, is something the employees of rupert Murdoch can relate to. But in the end Palmer is, as Morrison once called him, a sideshow; the real acrobats are the ones in the big top. And given the lack of any death-defying stunts, but a few pratfalls instead, the one-on-one debates will assume more importance than usual.. thus Shorten, as the front runner, wants, by and large, to stick to policy, but ScoMo, more personally popular (or at least less unpopular) is keen to display himself, the perpetual Pr man, his fixed grin determinedly authentic. So to celebrate easter, Morrison dragged the media into his church so they could photograph him with his hands in the air and his eyes closed, a spectacle that stimulated the Australian’s full-time evangelist, Greg Sheridan to the brink of theological orgasm. But the enduring image of the week was that of our prime minister bouncing a soccer ball on his head. or possibly vice versa. The views expressed in Mungo's column are his and not necessarily the views of the HT team.
