Jewelry from the Estate of Carol Hardin Davis Sold for $171,950
This November, we celebrate a remarkable milestone: 220 years since Tristram B. Freeman was appointed auctioneer for the City of Philadelphia by the governor of Pennsylvania. To mark this historic occasion, we are proud to share important news: our firm will move forward under one enduring name—Freeman’s.
Since 1805, Freeman’s has connected people with significant works of art and history—from a legendary chess-playing automaton and a newly discovered copy of the Declaration of Independence to masterpieces by Vincent van Gogh and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. We have brought World War I battleships and Philadelphia’s 19th-century Post Office under the hammer. Few auction houses in the world can lay claim to such a legacy.
Our rebrand reflects both a deep respect for our heritage and a clear vision for our future. Today’s Freeman’s unites the legacy and expertise of Freeman’s, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Cowan’s Auctions, and Hindman Auctions—bringing together centuries of innovation, regional leadership, and trusted relationships under one name. This shared foundation strengthens our ability to serve clients nationwide while remaining true to the values that have defined us for more than 200 years.
Though our brand has evolved, our promise remains unchanged: exceptional service, trusted specialists, and results that exceed expectations. We look forward to leading Freeman’s into its next chapter—continuing to bring art, history, and design to life, and connecting people with extraordinary objects for generations to come.
Yours sincerely,
Jay F. Krehbiel Chairman
Alyssa D. Quinlan Chief Executive Officer

Freeman’s Through the Centuries
Early Days
THE BEGINNING
In 1795, Tristram Bampfylde Freeman arrived in Philadelphia and, after a brief venture in printing, turned to the city’s thriving mercantile trade. Recognizing the potential of public sales—then tightly regulated and limited to a select few—he secured an official appointment as auctioneer from Pennsylvania’s governor in 1805, establishing Freeman’s on Market Street.
Freeman’s first auction, in December 1805, offered the fastsailing schooner Betsey, sugar from Havana, cases of English woolen hats, and pipes of Spanish brandy. In 1824, following the example of London houses, the firm added weekly sales of new and used books.
By 1836, Tristram B. Freeman passed the business to his son, Tristram William Lockyer Freeman, setting the stage for the next generation to carry the company forward through a rapidly changing 19th century.

EXPANDING HORIZONS
By the mid-19th century, Freeman’s had entered its third generation under James A. Freeman, operating primarily from a new location on Walnut Street. The auction house handled a wide range of consignments—from real estate, furniture, and libraries to unusual lots like burial plots, cases of Dom Perignon champagne, railroad shares, and even a Newfoundland dog, living up to its motto: Omnia praeter amicos vendimus (“We sell everything but our friends”).
The firm also managed significant cultural sales, including the 1854 dispersal of Charles Willson Peale’s Philadelphia Museum collection, which included the iconic George Washington at Princeton portrait.
In the early 1880s, Freeman’s capped the century with the landmark sale of the obsolete U.S. Post Office and Courthouse building for $425,000, a record price for a single building sold at public auction and a sign of the firm’s growing stature.

DIVERSIFICATION AND GROWTH
By the early 1900s, Freeman’s had established itself as a uniquely diversified auction house with specialist departments in real estate, stocks, books, furniture, machinery, merchandise, bankruptcy, antiques, and fine art.
The 1908 acquisition of M. Thomas & Son brought additional expertise in estate and fine art sales, elevating the firm’s scholarship. Throughout the early 20th century, Freeman’s handled notable collections of art and manuscripts from prominent Philadelphians while continuing to manage a wide range of commercial and industrial assets.
The aftermath of World War I created extraordinary opportunities as the U.S. government disposed of vast stores of surplus materials—including entire wool clips and decommissioned battleships—which Freeman’s sold to remarkable success.

Freeman’s Through the Centuries
Mid 1900s
HONORING THE LEGACY
By the 1960s, Freeman’s industrial and real estate auctions—once central to its business—had dwindled to only a few each year, prompting a shift exclusively toward estate, fine art, and antiques sales. Increased competition from European houses entering the U.S. market and new firms in Philadelphia further underscored the need for change.
In the 1980s, Freeman’s moved away from house clearances toward high-value collections and estates, investing in new locations and specialist departments that revitalized the firm. For instance, prior, the house sold nearly 50,000 lots annually, but a single fine art auction of just 160 lots matched that performance—signaling a decisive pivot to the high-end art, luxury, and collectibles market.

SHAPING THE MIDWEST MARKET
Leslie Hindman Auctioneers was founded in Chicago in 1982 and quickly gained recognition through major estate sales, including those of Colonel Robert R. McCormick, Mrs. Potter Palmer, Judge Julius J. Hoffman, John Belushi, Lilly Pulitzer, amongst others. The firm also garnered national attention with memorabilia auctions from Chicago’s beloved sports venues—Comiskey Park, the longtime home of the White Sox, and the historic Chicago Stadium, once home to the Bulls and Blackhawks. A record-setting sale of a Vincent van Gogh still life painting further elevated the company’s international reputation.
In 1995, Wes Cowan, former Curator of Archaeology at the Cincinnati Museum of Natural History, founded Cowan’s Auctions in Cincinnati, broadening the regional auction landscape and fueling the growth of the industry throughout the Midwest.

EXPANDED EXPERTISE AND NATIONAL PRESENCE
Throughout the 2000s, Freeman’s, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, and Cowan’s Auctions showcased extraordinary estates and collections, setting record prices for masterpieces by artists such as Joan Mitchell, Gertrude Abercrombie, Carl Moll, and Peter Saul, among others.
During this period, the three firms expanded their expertise with new specialist departments—including Antiquities, Pennsylvania Impressionists, Couture & Luxury Handbags, and Sports Memorabilia. They also extended their national presence with offices in Naples, Palm Beach, Denver, and beyond.
ESTABLISHING FREEMAN’S
In 2016, Freeman’s transitioned to a partnership of employees, with Samuel M. “Beau” Freeman II, the sixth generation of the Freeman family, continuing to serve as Chairman until his passing in June 2017.
By 2018, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers acquired Cowan’s Auctions, creating Hindman Auctions and establishing one of the largest presences of any auction house in the United States.
A new chapter began in 2024 when Freeman’s and Hindman Auctions merged to form a unified auction house under the leadership of CEO Alyssa D. Quinlan, laying the groundwork for continued growth and expansion. Today, the firm moves forward under the historic Freeman’s name—embracing the rich heritage and enduring legacy of America’s oldest auction house.

Impressionist and Modern Art
Freeman’s has a long-standing tradition of presenting exceptional works of Impressionist and Modern Art, beginning with the landmark 1967 sale of the Collection of Misses Nelle and Mary Mullen in Philadelphia, original trustees of the Barnes Foundation. Since then, the house has showcased numerous prestigious collections featuring key works from this period. Notable auction highlights include The Collection of Sidney Rothberg (2024), which achieved $4.9M, led by Renoir’s Portrait de Pierre Goujon en Costume Marin, which sold for $330,200. The Estate of Dorrance “Dodo” H. Hamilton (2018), which realized $6.1M, was headlined by Cézanne’s La Vie des Champ, a $1.45M masterpiece now housed at the National Gallery of Ireland. Finally, the Collection of Laura Pels (2024), which featured the largest group of modern art works by Françoise Gilot ever offered at auction.
Held biannually, these auctions bridge the gap between early pioneers of Impressionist art such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Mary Cassatt, and Modern Masters like Maurice Utrillo, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, and Jean Cocteau. Such sales also enable Freeman’s to spotlight Post-Impressionist artists and emerging or rediscovered talents whose market visibility is rapidly increasing, including Jean and Valentine Hugo, Blanche Hoschedé-Monet, Yvonne Canu, and Diego Rivera.
