The Historic Heyward House Museum, built in 1841, is home to the Historic Bluffton Foundation and is one of only eight antebellum homes still standing in Bluffton. This post and beam home is a well-preserved example of the Carolina Farmhouse style of architecture brought here from the West Indies. Visitors can explore the house museum and a restored cabin that once housed enslaved Africans, gaining insight into Bluffton’s complex history. In addition to exploring the past, guests can access maps and brochures to navigate the modern town. Friendly staff are available to answer questions and provide guided tours. Golf cart tours of the Bluffton’s National Register Historic District or guided house tours are also available, with group rates upon request.

Get a lay of the land — past, present and future.
“The charm of Bluffton lies not just in its historic architecture overlooking the May River, or in its Spanish moss-laced live oak and palmetto palm trees lining its streets, but what rests just below the surface. It is a town whose very soul has survived wars, famine, reconstruction, and periods of commercial successes and declines. Its diverse stories remain to be discovered by the curious traveler seeking a place that appreciates its past while planning for a greater future.”
– GLEN UMBERGER, HISTORIC PRESERVATIONIST

BREYTON HILL
Walking up the front steps of the Town of Bluffton Welcome Center, you‘re greeted by classic Southern charm — a grand two-story porch lined with rocking chairs, overlooking the green space of Wright Family Park and the beauty of the May River. The porch invites you into the Welcome Center and to Bluffton, itself.
Located in the rehabilitated Squire Pope Carriage House, the Welcome Center opened its doors in early 2025 after a $2.7 million rehabilitation project brought the nearly demolished home back to life. Inside, guests are met with sweet tea, lemonade and cookies, and a video tribute of residents sharing their “Love Letters to Bluffton.”
Town of Bluffton Welcome Center is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and closed on Sundays.
Squire William E. Pope, Jr. (17871862) owned the property where the 1850 timber-framed structure and its three outbuildings were originally located. These outbuildings survived the 1863 “Burning of Bluffton” at the hands of Union troops. In 1868, these outbuildings were cobbled together — without an architect, engineer or interior designer — to form a

residential structure for the Pope family. Over the years, the house was shaped by families such as the Pollitzers, Duggars and Wrights, who added their touches to make the residence more comfortable, modern and stylish.
The Town of Bluffton and Beaufort County jointly purchased the property in 2017 for $1.5 million to preserve
history and give everyone access to Bluffton’s idyllic waterfront.
“A woman stepped off a small tour bus, looked around the Historic District and said, ‘It’s like Bluffton is giving me a hug,’” says Debbie Szpanka, Bluffton’s public information officer. “This woman gave life to the feeling so many have about Bluffton.”
With original timber beams and
heart pine floors, the Welcome Center invites you to learn about Bluffton’s history, beauty and culture. The building is a contributing resource in both the Old Town Bluffton Historic District (established in 2007) and the Bluffton Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1996.
Bluffton boasts a rich and storied history. Many of those stories are housed in its historic buildings.
BY LAURA LEE
All of the buildings shown are in the Bluffton Historic District, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, 1996. In addition, the following two structures received their own individual listings: Campbell Chapel A.M.E. Church (listed in 2019), Church of the Cross (listed in 1975).
RECONSTRUCTION ERA NATIONAL HISTORIC NETWORK
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

CARD HOUSE (c. 1825)
34 Bridge Street
One of Old Town’s oldest residences, this home was known for its high-stakes poker games, where a winner once received a deed to a Hilton Head Island plantation.

HEYWARD HOUSE (1841)
70 Boundary Street
Built by enslaved labor for John Cole, this is one of the few antebellum residences to survive the “Burning of Bluffton” in 1863. The home currently serves as a museum and event site.
FRIPP HOUSE (c. 1835)
48 Bridge Street
Standing tall above the others, this now-private residence originally built by James L. Pope also survived the “Burning of Bluffton.” During the 1980s, it served as a bed and breakfast.

A. SEABROOK HOUSE (c. 1840)
47 Lawrence Street
Constructed for John Archibald Seabrook, this timber-framed residence sits on 6-foot piers, typical of the Lowcountry vernacular style.

CAMPBELL CHAPEL A.M.E. CHURCH (1853)
25 Boundary Street
Constructed in a Greek Revival style, the former Bluffton Methodist Church was sold to nine formerly enslaved congregants in 1874, when it became the Campbell Chapel A.M.E. Church. It was listed in the National Registry of Historic Places in 1975 and added to the Reconstruction Era National Historic Network in 2023.

110 Calhoun Street
Designed by Charleston architect Edward Brickell White in 1854, the Carpenter Gothic-style church built with cypress wood originally cost $5,000 to construct. It now features diamond-paned rose-glass windows, a copper seam roof and palmetto frond shutters. Listed in the National Registry of Historic Places.

63 Wharf Street
Former enslaved laborer Cyrus Garvey became the first freedman to build a house on the May River. The home remained in the Garvin family for three generations until 1961. Completely restored in 2017, it was added to the Reconstruction Era National Historic Network in 2023.
BY LAURA LEE

Locals have relied on the May River for millennia, from Muskogean and Yamasee tribes to modern society.
“Technically, the May River is an estuary, not a river,” says Glen Umberger, Bluffton’s historic preservationist, since the 15-mile inlet is fed from the ocean’s tidal shifts rather than a freshwater source. However you define it, the May River is an oasis for those who call it home.
The town of Bluffton dates back to 1820s, when families discovered that high on the bluff, the breeze off the river provided relief from sweltering
heat. “We were a summer village with a couple hundred residents, known simply as May River, South Carolina,” says Umberger.
Two prominent families, the Kirks and the Popes, ran nearby cotton and rice plantations and built multiple homes in town, where they arrived by boat each summer. Both claimed naming rights to the town, proposing Kirk’s Bluff or Pope’s Bluff, until a state senator settled the argument with the name Bluffton in 1842.
Bluffton gained a reputation for its separatist movement, propelling South Carolina to be the first to
leave the Union in 1860. When war erupted in 1861, Bluffton became a Confederate outpost.
“On June 4, 1863, Union troops made their way up the May River and set fire to two-thirds of the town, in a day known as the ‘Burning of Bluffton,’” Umberger explains.
During Reconstruction, the banks of the May River provided a fresh start, especially for those who were formerly enslaved. The Gullah people bought their own properties and started businesses.
“The river was a life source providing an abundance of fish,

shrimp, conch and oysters that could be sustenance or bartered for profit,” says Giovanni Glover, Bluffton Gullah Cultural Heritage Center executive director. “The river was also where they reaffirmed their faith through baptisms and worship services and linked Bluffton to other Gullah communities along the coast, maintaining important connections and preserving their way of life.”
For the next several decades, trade on the river fueled the county’s economy, but when U.S. Highway 17 was built in the 1920s, the river became less viable for commerce. While fewer than 100 people work as commercial fishermen today in
Beaufort County, Bluffton Oyster Company, the state’s last handshucking oyster factory, has been in operation since 1899.
Today, Bluffton is best known as a destination for arts, culture and history just steps from the river. Providing recreational opportunities and fresh seafood, along with peace and tranquility, the May River remains the heart of Bluffton.
Bluffton’s former mayor, Emmett McCracken, says the river charms him as much today as when he was a boy. “The May River has always been the main attraction. It’s where you learn to swim, catch your first fish or admire its natural beauty.”

It’s been a long time in the making, and now Ma Daisy’s Porch is open for business.
BY ROBIN ANDERS
Food is the way we speak to people,” says Bridgette Frazier, the mastermind and chef behind Ma Daisy’s Porch, a community gathering space named for her grandmother. Frazier’s restaurant, Chef B’s, spotlights authentic recipes passed down for centuries. Creative and resourceful, the Gullah people lived off the land, using readily available ingredients like rice, tomatoes, okra and shrimp.
“Our culture is a living thing,” says Frazier. “In the Lowcountry, food is the way we connect to our West African ancestors and preserve their vibrant culture here.”
After lunch, stop by Backus Bakery for a sweet treat and specialty coffee. Then make your way to the Bluffton Gullah Cultural Heritage Center, where interactive exhibits — activities like sewing sweetgrass baskets and making shrimp nets — and a captivating timeline celebrate Gullah culture. “We want people of all ages to taste, smell, see, feel and hear the culture so they know what it’s like to be Gullah,” says executive director Giovanni Glover. madaisysporch.com

If you wanted someone to talk to, get a hug or get a meal from, you could go to my grandmother, Daisy. I wanted to create a space that elicited that feeling of inclusion. Everyone is welcome here.
– BRIDGETTE FRAZIER ”

Nate Pringle always wanted to showcase Bluffton’s history and share his Gullah heritage. So when he retired, he launched his own tour business, Hidden Treasures of Bluffton, and recruited his brother, Ray, to help.
Visitors hop on an eight-passenger golf cart and ride through town with Nate or Ray to learn about the area’s diverse history. The brothers cover about 35 stops on four different tours – each lasting about 75 minutes.

“My grandad and his friends were oystermen and used to row out to the beds,” says Ray. “People don’t realize the oyster shells are valuable, and you have to replant them for the oysters to grow back — just like a tomato, but they take longer.”
At each stop, photos, documents and official records give visitors important visuals into the past. “We’re telling stories that our grandparents told us, and their parents told them,” Ray says. hiddentreasures bluffton.com

The May River is the blood that runs Bluffton. It’s always been an instrumental part of the town, where there are shrimp, fish and crabs for people to eat to survive and make a living. The greatest honor of my job is protecting the river. Once you experience the river, whether fishing or sightseeing with one of our guides, you’re hooked.

The block building at the end of Wharf Street is a Bluffton landmark. Home to Bluffton Oyster Company, which has been in business since 1899, the building sits on piles of oyster shells and represents a seafood industry that goes back more than a century. Larry Toomer, along with his wife, Tina, is the third generation to run the family business, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. Bluffton Oyster Company is the last hand-shucking oyster house in South Carolina.
The Toomers pride themselves on oysters, shrimp, clams, crabs, mussels and fish pulled from local waters. They sell the fresh-caught seafood at their market, where customers purchase provisions for oyster roasts and Lowcountry boils.
Just up the street, Bluffton Family Seafood House, the restaurant extension of the business, serves seafood dishes in a casual space with indoor and outdoor seating. Order a draft beer or glass of wine to pair with bowls of she-crab soup and platters of steamed oysters, peel-and-eat shrimp and blackened fish. Fresh seafood is the star, but friendly service plays a strong supporting act.
To hear what the Toomers love most about life in Bluffton, check out the “Exploring Bluffton” video series at VisitBluffton.org

The Shell Art Trail, an engaging public art display, winds through Old Town showcasing the oyster, a beloved seafood delicacy as well as a vital element of the Lowcountry marine ecosystem. The four-foottall oyster sculptures are painted by local artists and tell a colorful story. Each has a name describing its theme. “Pluff Mud Treasures,” “Greetings from the May River” and
“Protect our Precious,” are among the 21 shells installed in shops, galleries and museums. Pick up a guidebook at a local shop, and then follow the trail, take “shellfies,” and tag #LowcountryOysterTrail and #LoveBlufftonSC in your social media posts. Inspired by local ingredients and powerful cultural connections, the nationally recognized Chef Bernard Bennett opened Okàn in Old Town Bluffton in 2023.
“My goal for the restaurant is to tell the story of our enslaved people and their journey from West Africa to the Caribbean to here in America,” he says.
Meaning heart or soul in Africa’s Yoruba language, Okàn serves a range of authentic dishes from West African Jollof Rice to Jamaican Ital Stew and Sea Islands Peas and Rice.
“Rice is a big part of our history,” he says. “Enslaved people braided rice into their hair and brought it over here, and milled the land and moved the earth to grow rice in the Americas.”
Chef Bernard credits his grandmother with teaching him to cook everything from smothered chicken and hot water corn bread to rice and gravy, pound cake and a plethora of vegetables.
“My grandmother had a giant garden and was always outside working,” he recalls.
Like his grandmother, Chef Bernard’s dishes are based on what’s in season from local farms each week. okanbluffton.com

In 2020, Chambers was showcasing his work at a Juneteenth festival when he met local investor Billy Watterson. So impressed with his work, Watterson invited him to become the artist-in-residence for Burnt Church Distillery. Today
the local hotspot is part distillery and cocktail bar, part gallery and museum.
“People come from all over the country to this place and to have my artwork for their experience is an honor,” Chambers says. “The architecture of the building is just incredible as well as the African American and Gullah history for people to learn about. It’s definitely a place to check out when visiting Bluffton.”
Art is such an integral part of Chambers’ life today, but for a long time, he walked away from his dream in order to make a living. “I was doing art before I could write my own name, but then I got older and things changed.”
LIFESTYLE Deep in the easy-living region of coastal South Carolina, this centuries-old village is surrounded by the May River, majestic oaks and Spanish moss. The average yearly daytime temperature is 70 degrees, so you can leave the coats behind. The area is serviced by Savannah/Hilton Head
International Airport (SAV) and Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH) and is 20 minutes from I-95.
HOUSING From charming family homes to carefree condominiums, Bluffton properties are designed for all lifestyles. Moderate property taxes entice new residents.
This local artist draws inspiration from everyday life.
BY LAURA LEE
Then 10 years ago, he picked up a paint brush again, searching for solace after his younger brother passed away. “Thank God I did,” he says. “The beauty and energy Bluffton provides got me back on my feet and in my groove.”
Chambers and his wife, Gwen, are dedicated to giving back to the town where they’ve raised their two boys and made their living.
“We’ve been doing what we can to leave our mark and thank Bluffton for giving us so many opportunities,” he says. “We have the kindest people down here and we look out for each other. Everybody waves at you when you drive by. I love how Bluffton embraces the people who live here and the visitors here.”
CAREERS Bluffton is one of the fastest growing towns in America with ample career opportunities. Economic development organizations, such as the Don Ryan Center for Innovation, provide support for budding entrepreneurs and small businesses.
PEOPLE Bluffton is home to about 38,000 residents, with an average age in the upper 30s.
EDUCATION There are multiple public and private educational options from pre-K through high school. University of South Carolina Beaufort and Technical College
