ne of Bluffton’s many pleasant features is its walkability. Taking a stroll down its centuries-old streets in the area known as Old Town Bluffton is an enjoyable way to experience the gentle allure of the Lowcountry. Boutiques, restaurants, and galleries stand side by side with demure cottages and genteel homes, many dating to the early 1800s. The entire one-square-mile historic district of this charming river village is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district includes two original shops, 20 houses, two churches, and an oyster-shucking factory. Before the Civil War, Bluffton became a popular summer haven known for its cool river breezes. In the center of Old Town, Calhoun Street is lined with historic cottages, homes, and shops: Seven Oaks, Squire Pope’s Carriage House, Allen-

Lockwood House, Graves House, Fripp-Lowden House, The Peeples Store, Carson Cottage, Patz Brothers House, and Planters Mercantile. Heyward House Museum & Welcome Center on Boundary Street was constructed in the Carolina farmhouse style by enslaved people in 1841. Today it serves as the town’s welcome center. During the Civil War, Union forces burned Bluffton in June 1863. About 60 structures stood in town before the fire. After the dust settled, 15 remained. Two surviving churches have become well-known landmarks: Campbell Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, built in 1853, and on the banks of the May River, the Anglican Church of the Cross, circa 1857. The Huger-Gordon House, one of the oldest houses in Bluffton, sits on Water Street with a breathtaking view of the May River and still serves

By Linda Lanier as a family home. One section of the house dates to 1795. Although the house survived the Union burning in 1863, scars around the front door show where it was shelled with minié balls during the scuffle. The Card House on Bridge Street was built about 1825. According to local folklore, it changed hands in a late-night poker game, which became its namesake. The Garvin-Garvey House, perched on the river bluff, was the first home owned and built by a freedman’s family. Today it is open to visitors as an interpretive center. A stone’s throw down Wharf Street, Bluffton Oyster Factory Park recognizes the importance of the seafood industry to the culture of Bluffton. Its location on the May River makes a picturesque backdrop for town events, as well as personal celebrations, such as weddings and family reunions. VISITBLUF F TO N. O R G •

or more than 300 years, the Gullah, descendants of slaves, have lived in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Brought against their will from West and Central Africa, they endured hardship and heartbreak. After emancipation, they established new communities on the sea islands of Hilton Head Island, Daufuskie Island, and Saint Helena, along with Bluffton and other small towns on the nearby mainland. Today these families and their ancient culture remain a vibrant thread in the fabric of Bluffton life. After the Civil War and well into the 20th century, the Gullah community continued to live on islands with no bridges and little contact with the mainland. Fishing, oystering, and farming were the way of life. Much of the Lowcountry’s beloved food culture originated with the Gullah — rice perlo, okra gumbo, shrimp and gravy, all cooked with spices and time-honored African cooking methods.

The rich Gullah creole dialect, a distinctive mixture of English and African languages, is still spoken and written. One of the best-known Gullah expressions, “Kumbaya,” translated “come by here,” found its way into a famous folk song. And Gullah sweetgrass baskets, treasured for their beauty and artistry, are sewn by hand as they were in the 18th century. Spiritual life remains at the heart of Gullah culture. Small historic praise houses are tucked under majestic oak trees along sandy lanes in the Lowcountry, and the New Testament has been translated into Gullah. The descendants of formerly enslaved people in South Carolina and North Carolina refer to themselves as Gullah, while the descendants in Georgia and north Florida refer to themselves as Geechee. The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, which was established by Congress in 2006 to recognize this special history

and way of life, is a 12,000-squaremile stretch of places that play a prominent role in the centuries-old Gullah Geechee culture. On nearby Hilton Head Island, Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park on the banks of Port Royal Sound marks the site of the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved people in the United States. It is known as “the place where freedom began.” Established in 1862 by General Ormsby Mitchel, a Union commander of the forces that occupied the island, Mitchelville was the home of formerly enslaved people who gained their freedom prior to the Emancipation Proclamation in the Port Royal Experiment. Several educational experiences encourage learning more about Gullah culture. hen Blufftonians talk about spending the day in “the rivah,” they’re referring to the May River in Lowcountry speak. ith a wide expanse of lawn and a panoramic view of the May River, Wright Family Park is the newest greenscape in Old Town Bluffton. Longtime Blufftonians, the Wrights, owned and stewarded this waterside property for 80 years. They enjoyed walking the shoreline, looking for oysters and crabs. Now their piece of Bluffton paradise is shared with everyone in town. Walk the meandering boardwalk that follows the water’s edge and pause to read placards about Bluffton history and the flora and fauna that create its distinct sense of place. Stairs lead down from the boardwalk, right to the river. Watch overhead for great blue herons and keep an eye on the water for bottlenose dolphins. Sit on a bench under moss-draped oaks and soak in the serenity. The recently renovated Calhoun Street Dock, adjacent to the park, provides public river access for fishing, boating, shrimping, and nature watching. arm to table — or often in the Lowcountry, boat to table — is not a new concept in Bluffton. For generations, local farms and roadside vegetable stands have sold tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, beans, strawberries, melons, and a myriad of greens that end up on Lowcountry tables, both in personal dining rooms and restaurants. This tradition continues today at the open-air Farmers Market of Bluffton held Thursdays year-round, noon-5 p.m., at Martin Family Park in Old Town. Local growers not only sell fresh fruit and vegetables, but also prepared foods, plants, seafood, cut flowers, eggs, and honey. Live music complements the vibrant scene. For something sweet, try luscious cheesecakes, delicious peach cobbler, or lavender-honey ice cream from Buss’ Creamery, which uses local cream, milk, and eggs for its products. ver the past four decades, the Bluffton food scene has grown into a vibrant part of life in Old Town and beyond. Chefs and cooks, whether homegrown or transplanted, have a reputation for mastering Lowcountry cuisine. They draw on historic techniques and ingredients to keep traditional dishes true to form, while also introducing fine-dining concepts and unexpected international fare. Bluffton chefs and cooks have access to fresh fruits and vegetables from nearby farms. They source seafood from surrounding waters, including the Atlantic Ocean, May River, and the many marshes, inlets, and streams in between. Locally raised pork, poultry, and beef show up on a variety of Bluffton menus, from barbecue restaurants to fine-dining establishments. Brandon Carter, co-chef and co-owner of FARM — a restaurant overlooking May River Road in Old Town Bluffton — is a shining example of the new breed of Southern chefs. Schooled in classical techniques at the Culinary Institute of America,

Home to Bluffton Oyster Company, which has been in business since 1899, the building sits on piles of oyster shells, representing a seafood industry that goes back more than a century. Larry Toomer, along with his wife, Tina, is the third generation to run the family business, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. Bluffton Oyster Company is the last hand-shucking oyster house in South Carolina. The Toomers pride themselves on oysters, shrimp, clams, crabs, mussels, and fish pulled from local waters. or nearly 200 years, little Bluffton sat upon the banks of the May River, deep in the heart of the South Carolina Lowcountry, like an old lady in her finery, whiling away the sunny days and exchanging pleasantries with the neighbors. But about 40 years ago, long after the steamboats stopped unloading passengers at the county dock on Calhoun Street, people began traveling down old coastal Highway 17, taking a few back roads, and discovering this little village and its moss-covered magic. Artists and makers were drawn to Bluffton by its inherent beauty, peaceful nature and warm hospitality. A lively artists’ community sprang up in historic Old Town where the stunning scenery of the Lowcountry provides inspiration for painters, sculptors, and photographers.

he Society of Bluffton Artists (SOBA), on the corner of Calhoun and Church streets, is a cooperative featuring more than 100 local artists, and it also offers art classes for those just discovering their talent. The quirky, colorful building is a great place to check out established and emerging artists. SOBA’s exhibits are new every month. No matter the medium, Lowcountry influences run throughout the pieces, from the fine detail of painted feathers on a sea bird to watercolor landscapes of tangled live oak branches and striking photographs of the sun setting on the May River. Over at The Store, you’ll find one of Bluffton’s leading ladies. Babbie Guscio has owned the shop for more than 40 years in this building that dates to 1904. The Store is known for its “funky and fabulous finds” and often hosts fun events and shows throughout the year. “When I first arrived in Bluffton, it was like a blank canvas to me,” Guscio says. “I, like many others, discovered that we could paint a beautiful picture here.”
