GREENFIELD ENGINEERING INSTALLS £1.3 MILLION STATE-OF-THE-ART POWDER COATING LINE

Greenfield Engineering has taken a major leap forward in precision sheet metal finishing with the installation of a cuttingedge powder coating system. The new line combines a Wagner powder booth with an IPS coating centre and a TD Finishing system incorporating advanced pre-treatment, curing ovens, and an overhead conveyor. This investment is designed to reduce energy consumption, increase productivity, and deliver an exceptional quality finish.

For more than 25 years, Greenfield’s two existing powder coating lines were serviced and maintained by TD Finishing. However, the outgoing plant, operating on double shifts for over 15 years had become inefficient and was nearing the end of its reliable production life. It’s three-stage pre-treatment process could no longer meet durability and corrosion resistance requirements, while the drying and curing ovens were energy-intensive. Outdated application equipment, including an old feed centre and powder booth, also needed

replacing. The objective was clear: install the most advanced powder transfer technology available.

The New System: Efficiency and Sustainability at Its Core

The TD Finishing system incorporates a five-stage spray pre-clean process in high-quality stainless steel, complete with automatic chemical dosing. It connects to a single-pass drying oven equipped with a heat recovery system that recycles

exhaust heat to pre-heat cleaning chemicals, optimizing energy use. A three-pass ceramic-lined curing oven further enhances thermal efficiency, reducing operating costs.

All components travel via an overhead monorail conveyor with a side-track system to prevent contamination. To ensure superior finish quality, a reverse osmosis mist spray provides a pure water final rinse before powder application. The line operates at variable speeds up to 2.5 metres per minute and accommodates components up to 1600mm (H) x 600mm (W) and can process lengths of up to 3200mm long.

Why Wagner IPS? A UK First

Greenfield selected Wagner’s IPS coating centre, the first of its kind in the UK, for its groundbreaking design. Unlike traditional systems, IPS is a fully automated, enclosed, and pressurised powder supply and color change system that eliminates pumps such as Venturi or pinch valves. This innovation ensures a consistent, high-density powder flow, even for high output rates over long periods of time.

The system features six guns on each side operating in automatic contouring mode, precisely following component profiles, while additional low-level guns coat the undersides of larger cabinets, reducing operator fatigue. Both the booth and software are pre-configured for future robotic integration, paving the way toward full automation.

Customer Perspective

Daniel Green, Director at Greenfield

Engineering, explains:

“Our two TD Finishing plants served us well, but we reached a tipping point where reinvestment in a more efficient and sustainable system was essential. TD Finishing worked closely with us over two years to refine specifications and options. Installation was seamless, with clear timelines throughout.

For powder application, Wagner was the obvious choice. Their commitment to the UK market, backed by strong after-sales support, aligned perfectly with our philosophy of customer satisfaction. Their IPS technology was far ahead of anything else we reviewed.”

Daniel adds:

“Neil Bourne, Business Development Director, and Lee Hull, Powder Division Manager, arranged trials at Wagner’s Markdorf facility and site visits to IPS installations. After these evaluations, it was clear Wagner and TD Finishing were the right partners. Installation began in November, completed in December, and production started in January 2026. Since commissioning, we’ve been delighted with the plant’s performance and the exceptional finish quality. The service and support from both Wagner and TD Finishing have set new standards in UK powder coating.”

Are you involved with the application of coatings to enhance and protect your products? Do you need to meet client specifications to ensure the longevity of your components? Does the complex world of surface engineering and materials finishing cause you headaches?

If so, the courses offered by the Institute of Materials Finishing (IMF) could be your solution!

The IMF have been promoting knowledge in the surface finishing industries, both inorganic surface treatments including plating and the application of organic paints, lacquers and varnishes for many years. Large numbers of engineers and technicians across a multitude of industries have benefitted from the knowledge gained to enhance their careers, their standing within industry and the ability to problem solve the many challenges they face in their daily working lives!

Starting with the Foundation level course, students gain knowledge on all aspects of materials finishing, specifically aimed at their own industry requirements, but to include sections on Health & Safety, the Environment and Surface Finishing and Corrosion Protection. There is no need for a science background to be able to successfully complete a foundation course.

The Foundation Course requires study of 15 sections and requires the submission of 2 marked assignments followed by an end examination. The course, conducted by distance learning will take 16 weeks to complete. There are three specific study routes to choose from; electroplating, organic coatings and aerospace finishing. On successful completion, the student is awarded the Foundation Certificate.

To follow on, students can then elect to progress to the Technician level modules, which give more in-depth knowledge for key finishing technologies, their application and best practice methods. Again, both inorganic and organic technologies can be studied to match the industry requirements. There is a choice of eight modules, which provide study in applicable areas of surface finishing best matched to your needs.

Like the Foundation course, study is by distance learning, and the student is required to complete four marked assignments and pass an examination.

BCF’S MOMENTUM CONTINUES AS NEW PRESIDENT JANE RYDER SETS SIGHTS ON PAINT RECYCLING AND REGULATORY REFORM

Jane Ryder, Vice President & General Manager of SherwinWilliams Consumer Brands Group Europe, took over as the new President of the British Coatings Federation earlier in 2026, and will serve for a twoyear term. Her first engagement was to host the BCF’s Parliamentary Reception at the end of March, where over 130 guests and 20 MPs were present, and which was a huge success.

Talking about her new role, Jane said:

“I’m thrilled and honoured to be the new BCF President; under Sharon Harte’s guidance, the BCF is in really good shape, with a fantastic team, strong finances and a track record of successful representation of the sector. I look forward to helping the BCF team continue to provide quality regulatory support and information to our members over the next couple of years.

“In particular, though, I am excited to help launch the BCF’s new leftover paint and packaging recycling programme, PaintCare, during my two-year term,

as well as continuing to represent the industry’s needs to Government on improving UK Chemical regulations. There is lots to be done and lots to look forward to.”

Jane succeeds Sharon Harte, Managing Director of Dacrylate Paints, who had been BCF’s first female President in the Federation’s 100-plus-year history. Sharon was named in the 2024 Women in Trade Associations Powerlist, providing external recognition for her important contribution.

Sharon commented:

“It has been a real privilege to serve as President of the British Coatings Federation. During that time, we’ve made significant progress together - from advancing our industry’s journey towards net zero, to strengthening representation and achieving greater diversity at the Board level.

I’m particularly proud that the BCF has continued to grow in influence and impact, reflected not only in the successful delivery of our five-year strategic roadmap to 2025 and the development of our new strategy through

to 2030, but also in national recognition - including being named Trade Association of the Year in both 2023 and 2026, and with CEO Tom Bowtell recognised as CEO of the Year in 2024.

We have also strengthened our focus on the power and future of the sector, from careers outreach to young people through initiatives like the NextGen Council, to embedding our Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Charter.

None of this would have been possible without the phenomenal BCF team and the dedication of the many volunteers who give their time and expertise across our committees - they are the backbone of the Federation’s success.

I know I am leaving the BCF Board in excellent and safe hands with Jane. Whilst there are undoubtedly challenges ahead for the sector, I am confident that under Jane and Tom’s leadership, the Federation will continue to step up for its members and build on our strong momentum.”

INLEX SUPPORTS PRECOTE’S NEW WATER-BASED INNOVATION

Inlex Locking is helping coatings solutions provider SurTec to test an innovative new water-based precote® product.

Inlex has been a trusted coating partner for precote products for many years.

Due to this close cooperation, Inlex offered the use of its application machines to test a new water-based product which will be released to the market this autumn.

In order to respond to evolving regulations and OEM demands, the precote product line - which belongs to the SurTec Group - will be expanded by creating a new water-based coating which is safer and more environmentally friendly.

Based in Wolverhampton, Inlex is part of the Anochrome Group and offers a comprehensive range of threadlocking and sealings for high-tech fastening applications across many industries.

Sebastian Thau, Director Global Product Management Functional Coatings of SurTec, said: “The industry has clearly been moving towards waterbased coatings for some time. OEMs are now specifically asking for the technology as part of their VOC reduction measures.

“We have a fantastic relationship with Inlex as our primary UK coating partner so we were delighted when the team offered us the

opportunity to test our new product on their industry-leading machines.

“The new product is currently undergoing extensive testing with Inlex and other customers so we can fully understand the material, how it mixes and how it behaves in the real world.

“We will have regular feedback sessions with the experts at Inlex with a view to launching the product later this year.”

The partnership model has been fundamental to precote’s growth and success, allowing the business to focus on offering best-in-class service. SurTec created a new field of applications called functional coatings, which includes not just precote products, but also products such as anti-friction coatings.

Inlex’s Group Threadlocking / Sealing &

Purchasing Director Kev Walton said the business was proud to be leading the way in R&D.

“We have a genuine close and trustful relationship with SurTec which benefits all parties and, ultimately, our customers and end-users,” he said.

“We are pleased to be helping SurTec with its development work and look forward to expanding our offering even further with the addition of the new product, which will also be available from other businesses within the Anochrome Group.”

Inlex already offers precote® 5, 15, 30, 80 and 85, and Top300.

Meanwhile, SurTec has invited Inlex to have a presence on its stand at the Fastener Fair Global in Stuttgart next year.

WEG COATINGS BOOST

ASSET PROTECTION AND CUT OPERATING COSTS

Improving equipment reliability through targeted surface renewal and high-performance coating applications

Corrosion and wear continue to pose significant challenges to industrial equipment, especially in harsh and demanding environments where downtime is costly. In many cases, the issue is not only exposure to these conditions, but the use of coatings that are not suited to them. WEG, a global specialist in protective and performance-driven industrial coatings, has addressed this challenge by developing coatings that withstand high abrasion environments.

Regular equipment maintenance requires careful planning, but unexpected events can disrupt even the most organised schedules. Incorrect curing procedures and incompatible coatings can also cause issues, such as tackiness, peeling or incomplete hardness. For industrial equipment used in high-temperature settings for example, coatings without proper ultra-violet (UV) protection will lead to premature failure.

A clear example of these challenges can be seen in a project carried out in collaboration between WEG and an industrial maintenance partner. The machinery involved was operating in highly abrasive environments and had suffered significant surface deterioration. To restore it through surface renewal, the process began with sanding the structure to remove any remaining traces of the old coating.

As natural oxidation tends to cause coating failure through UV damage of the coatings’ clear coat, correction took place to remove the damaged coat before moving onto the next step. Once the surfaces were ready, WEG’s WEGPOXI WET SURFACE 88 HT primer, an epoxy polyamine high build primer/topcoat bicomponent designed with anticorrosive pigments for steel surfaces, was applied. This was followed by paint from the SRD line, ensuring not only durability, but also an aesthetic revitalisation of the equipment.

The new coatings significantly improved durability, enabling the machinery to better withstand harsh industrial conditions and reducing maintenance requirements. This resulted in a significant reduction in unplanned downtime, alongside improved productivity and more optimised operational costs. By enhancing surface protection, the system also improved overall equipment reliability in demanding environments.

Because of this, the service life of the equipment was also increased, meaning that the equipment could be kept running for longer without having to compromise the quality of the production. This further resulted in less maintenance needed and greater profitability for the customer.

Thanks to their experience in developing solutions for operational efficiency since 1961, WEG has created a line of coating products for heavily impacted industrial equipment, suitable for a variety of industries. This range includes liquid coatings, powder coatings, coatings for industrial refinishing and fleet applications, impregnation varnishes and diluent.

CELEBRATING 10 SUCCESSFUL YEARS 2016 TO 2026

How time flies! At the beginning of May 2016 PlatingLine-Advice launched a new technical advice service to assist businesses considering investment in new surface treatment equipment or indeed upgrading or resolving engineering problems with existing facilities.

We are now celebrating 10 successful years of helping clients achieve their goals and realise fruitful investments.

The delivery of a successful project that meets all the client’s expectations on cost, timing and performance requires a multi-disciplined approach.

The specialised nature of surface treatment equipment along with the necessary supporting ancillary items meant there had previously been a lack of independent specialist technical advice available. This often resulted in excessive reliance on potential suppliers to fulfil their obligations, which sometimes worked but can also put the client at a disadvantage.

The provision of impartial technical advice and support throughout the whole project process is intended to save the client valuable time and assets and ease

successful project realisation.

The most important aspect as far as the purchaser is concerned is having peace of mind and confidence that their purchasing decision will prove to be well founded.

The experience of the last ten years has proven the principle behind the concept with a wide range of projects successfully completed.

We would like to thank all our clients old and new for their past and ongoing business and the faith and confidence they have shown in our service.

BCF CALLS ON GOVERNMENT TO SUPPORT ITS PAINTCARE RECYCLING SCHEME AT PARLIAMENTARY RECEPTION

The event, kindly hosted by Adam Jogee MP, Member of Parliament for Newcastleunder-Lyme, was attended by Industry Minister, Chris McDonald MP; Minister for Waste and Recycling, Mary Creagh MP; along with more than 20 other MPs and Peers. They joined with around 150 guests from across the coatings sector, with key stakeholders from a range of sectors and organisations. The strong attendance reflected the growing recognition of the essential role our sector plays in the UK economy and in delivering the Government’s Industrial Strategy.

Taking place on Day 2 of World Paint and Coatings Week, the reception served as a platform to highlight the vital contribution coatings play in advancing sustainability. It provided an ideal opportunity to showcase the progress our industry is making toward a more sustainable future and to demonstrate how coatings innovation underpins so many of the UK’s environmental and economic ambitions.

Jane Ryder, BCF President and Vice President & General Manager, Consumer Brands Group – Europe at SherwinWilliams UK, Tom Bowtell, BCF CEO and Adam Jogee MP all delivered wellreceived speeches. Tom Bowtell focussed on the key policy challenges facing the coatings sector, including: rocketing energy and raw material prices; rising employment costs; the need for support for the green energy transition; a longterm focus on skills and training, especially STEM subjects and relevant apprenticeships; and for the Modern Industrial Strategy to recognise the importance of supply chains.

Tom went on to call on the government to find a less cumbersome and costly solution for UK REACH that accepts registrations in the EU as valid in the UK, as part of a wider move towards a Swiss Model approach.

The event also provided an opportunity to update guests on the regional trial of the BCF’s PaintCare initiative, which launched this month. PaintCare UK is the UK’s first voluntary, industry-led takeback scheme for leftover decorative paint and packaging, delivered by the BCF on behalf of

paint manufacturers in partnership with participating retail and trade outlets. Notably, the BCF were able to demonstrate the scheme’s progress to Waste and Recycling Minister Mary Creagh and discuss some regulatory challenges that must be addressed to achieve a nationwide rollout.

Speaking after the event, Jane Ryder commented:

“This was my first event as BCF President, and it was great to see so many BCF members joining us at our Parliamentary Reception. I am very grateful to Adam Jogee MP for sponsoring the event and for helping us to make it happen. I was also delighted that Industry Minister, Chris McDonald, and Waste and Recycling Minister, Mary Creagh, both gave us so much of their time to come and hear more about the coatings industry and the needs and ambitions of its members.”

Tom Bowtell added:

“I am really pleased with the turnout for the reception, with more than 20 MPs coming to hear more about our sector and to speak with our members and other stakeholders. It was a good opportunity to put firmly on record the concerns our sector still has with UK REACH and to urge the government, even at a very late hour, to rethink its proposals, which currently look as though they will still add significant burdens onto industry. I was also particularly pleased to be able to talk to both Ministers McDonald and Creagh about the coatings sector’s ambitions for our PaintCare initiative. If we can get this right, it will be a major win for the sector and for government in creating a more circular economy.”

THE ENGINEERING CASE FOR ELECTRIC PUMPS: UNLOCKING ENERGY SAVINGS IN SURFACE FINISHING OPERATIONS

In modern surface finishing operations, energy efficiency is more than a sustainability goal – it’s a commercial necessity. Yet many facilities still depend on legacy air- operated pumps, which can be surprisingly inefficient, costly to operate, and maintenanceintensive. Rising energy prices, tighter margins, and increasing pressure to optimise performance mean engineering teams are looking for practical ways to cut energy use without compromising process quality.

The Hidden Cost of Compressed Air

Air-operated diaphragm pumps (AODDs) are widely used in surface finishing because they can safely transfer aggressive fluids such as hydrochloric acid pickling solutions and surfactantcontaining cleaners, across a broad range of viscosities and temperatures. However, their reliance on compressed air

introduces significant inefficiencies. With operating efficiencies often as low as 10–15%, a large portion of energy is lost during operation. Generating compressed air is expensive, and issues such as moisture-related icing, noise, and complicated maintenance can increase the true lifecycle cost of these pumps. Many facilities continue to use them simply because they are familiar – not because they are efficient.

Transferable Lessons from a Real-World Upgrade

A recent engineering project conducted by CDR Pumps demonstrates the measurable impact of replacing AODDs with electric diaphragm pumps. While the project was conducted for a national corrugated cardboard manufacturer, the lessons are fully transferable to surface finishing operations: significantly improved energy efficiency and reduced maintenance, while maintaining reliability in chemical handling applications.

CDR Pumps initially conducted a detailed engineering assessment, evaluating air consumption, energy use, and operational performance. Following successful trials, seven AODDs at one manufacturing site were replaced with QUANTMTM electric pumps. The proven performance and efficiency gains led to a wider rollout,

ultimately resulting in the installation of 96 QUANTMTM pumps across all UK manufacturing sites.

Measurable Results

Energy use was monitored using direct measurements – air consumption for the

AODDs and kilowatt usage for the QUANTMTM pumps – confirming substantial efficiency improvements:

Average saving of 7.5 kWh per pump – translating to 334,687 kWh saved annually across the pilot site

Annual energy costs reduced by c. £80k across the pilot site

When rolled out across all manufacturing sites – significant energy savings of c. £1 million within a single year

Operational benefits were equally compelling. Eliminating compressed air removed icing issues, noise was reduced, and fewer moving parts simplified

maintenance. Importantly, thanks to their matching footprints, the pumps were installed quickly with minimal adjustments or disruption to operations.

Beyond Equipment — An Engineering Partnership

Focused engineering-led assessments often reveal straightforward opportunities to reduce energy use and improve performance. CDR Pumps guides manufacturers through every stage – from initial enquiry and performance analysis to installation and ongoing support –helping facilities adopt more efficient pumping solutions.

Take the Next Step

If your surface finishing operations rely on air-operated pumps, substantial savings could be within reach.

Contact CDR Pumps today on 01933 674777 or sales@cdrpumps.co.uk to discover how your facility can reduce energy costs, improve reliability, and achieve measurable efficiency gains.

ON-SITE, ON DEMAND: HOW MOBILE WATER TREATMENT IS RESHAPING PETROCHEMICAL OPERATIONS

Mobile Water Solutions, part of Nijhuis Saur Industries

A global operator facing local constraints

Water scarcity, tightening environmental regulation, and the operational complexity of petrochemical processing are converging to create one of the sector’s most pressing resource management challenges. Increasingly, facilities are turning to mobile water and wastewater treatment solutions to meet that challenge.

Mobile treatment systems can be rapidly deployed, configured, and scaled to match the specific process requirements of a site. For petrochemical operations, where water quality fluctuations can disrupt core processes and regulatory noncompliance carries significant commercial risk, this flexibility is operationally critical. The modular nature of mobile units, which can be combined like building blocks to create bespoke treatment trains, means solutions can be configured to meet the targets of each facility.

One of the world’s largest petrochemical companies recently confronted this scenario. Operating in Europe, in a region subject to water scarcity and strict environmental compliance requirements, the refinery needed a strategy capable of addressing both emergency situations and sustained day-to-day demand, with the deployment speed and flexibility that time-sensitive facilities require.

The company engaged Mobile Water Solutions, part of Nijhuis Saur Industries, to deliver a tailored solution using temporary treatment assets. The result was a multi-stage system covering two treatment streams: surface water processing and wastewater reuse. Part of the feed water was drawn from the site’s existing wastewater treatment plant, allowing Mobile Water Solutions to maximise recovery across the site.

A layered treatment approach

For surface water treatment, Mobile Water Solutions deployed a mobile ultrafiltration asset followed by two activated carbon (AC) filtration units and two mobile reverse osmosis (RO) assets. Concentrates underwent further treatment through additional mobile RO units before reintegration into the refinery’s process water supply, conserving drinking water resources.

For wastewater reuse, Mobile Water Solutions provided a mobile ultrafiltration asset with upstream sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) dosing and downstream AC

filtration, complemented by a mobile reverse osmosis trailer. These units enabled the refinery to treat and repurpose wastewater that would otherwise have required disposal, reducing net water consumption.

Operational and sustainability gains

The operational benefits were measurable. By replacing the previous ion exchange demineralisation process with reverse osmosis, chemical regeneration cycles were reduced tenfold, lowering both costs and environmental impact. Wastewater discharge volumes fell by approximately 10%, cutting demand for fresh water and reducing effluent processing costs. Results have been compelling enough that the refinery is now considering doubling the system’s capacity to recycle greater volumes and generate further savings.

This case reflects a broader shift in how heavy industry approaches water management. Mobile treatment is no longer reserved for emergency response. Deployed as part of a considered water strategy, it enables resource optimisation, reduces operational risk, and supports long-term environmental targets. For facilities facing the dual pressure of water scarcity and tightening regulation, it represents a practical, proven route to greater resilience.

PRETREATMENT, SURFACE PREPARATION, DEGREASING & CLEANING

ADVANCED CORROSION PROTECTION FOR ELECTRONICS SYSTEMS IN SEWAGE AND WATER TREATMENT PLANTS

Electrical control systems in sewage and water treatment plants face some of the harshest operating conditions imaginable - continuous exposure to moisture, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and other aggressive gases creates a relentlessly corrosive atmosphere. Without robust protection in place, components deteriorate ahead of schedule, triggering costly downtime and serious safety risks.

Corrosion is an insidious and costly problem that will eventually degrade virtually every metal and metal alloy. Nowhere is this more critical than in electrical and electronic control systems, where corroded components, connectors and switches can trigger failures at the worst possible moment.

To combat this, engineers are increasingly turning to specialized corrosion inhibitors and protective coatings. These solutions create a reliable barrier against corrosive agents without compromising electrical performance. Pairing harsh-environmentrated enclosures with proactive maintenance and considered material selection further extends system life. Getting corrosion protection right means fewer unplanned shutdowns and longer-lasting control infrastructure across the entire water treatment network.

SuperCORR A specialist barrier film corrosion protection for electronics

EnviroTech Europe supply advanced corrosion protection products, based on approved synthetic materials, to provide high quality solutions to a diverse range of lubrication and corrosion problems.

SuperCORR A is a “self-healing” ultra-thin film water displacing lubricant with long-lasting, anti-corrosion inhibitors providing a superior lubrication coefficient and protection against moisture, wear, general and fretting corrosion, static electricity, corona, and other electro migration problems. The non-flammable film is only 7 microns (0.007mm) in thickness, will not harden or crack, is not a wax or oil-based product and is formulated without sulphates, chlorides or halogens.

SuperCORR A has a proven performance record in protecting electrical components, systems, connectors and electronics. The coating will also prevent the ingress of moisture and other contaminants onto the connector surfaces.

Removal of surface contamination from the metallic contact surfaces on switches and circuit breakers is essential to ensure fault free operation. An inert compound that neither reduces nor increases the electrical conductivity, SuperCORR A’s unique formulation lifts and removes dust and soils from the metal contact surfaces.

It also provides long term protection from corrosion and electrical arcing that can lead to shorts and subsequent circuit failures. The aerosol spray is supplied with a flexible tube applicator which allows the protective coating to be applied accurately, even in difficult to get to places.

Intelligent process control with Lab-on-a-Chip and AI-based Smart Drying AUTOMATIC CONTROL OF CLEANING AND DRYING QUALITY, RESOURCE CONSUMPTION, AND COSTS

Consistently high process quality and savings in energy, resources, and operating costs—these are the demands that water-based cleaning processes must meet today. To meet these requirements reliably and efficiently, Ecoclean has developed the innovative Lab-on-a-Chip system. It maintains the quality of the cleaning and rinsing baths at an optimal level through automated analyses based on various measurement methods. The new Smart Drying technology enables AI-supported, intelligent control and optimization of drying processes with hot air and vacuum.

Increasing demands on component quality are leading to more complex cleaning processes. Specified cleanliness specifications must be maintained in a stable and reproducible manner. This is increasingly associated with higher documentation requirements for process

parameters. At the same time, there is a demand for more energy- and resourceefficient cleaning in order to reduce the CO2 footprint and costs. This is offset by a shortage of skilled personnel with the appropriate training and cleaning expertise.

Ecoclean is responding to this situation with innovative developments such as the Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC) system and Smart Drying technology for automated monitoring and intelligent control of cleaning quality. These solutions ensure that cleaning and drying processes run optimally and also meet documentation requirements through constant recording of parameters.

LOC – comprehensive cleaner and bath analyses with just one system

Until now, a wide variety of sensors have been required to analyze the concentration of cleaning or passivation media and bath contamination, which are used in the baths in accordance with the respective medium or process. The measurements also usually require numerous manual interventions.

The time-consuming determination of bath quality often leads to cleaning media being added regardless of consumption. Likewise, bath changes are still sometimes carried out on a time-dependent basis. Both can lead to suboptimal bath and thus cleaning quality, as well as a waste of resources.

This changes with the new LOC system, which can be integrated into both multi-bath immersion and chamber systems. The combination of different measurement methods in a single system opens up an enormous range of possibilities for cleaner and bath analysis.

And this without having to equip each bath with different sensors and regardless of the cleaning or passivation medium and process used. With the systemintegrated systems, sampling is carried out automatically from the respective stations connected to the evaluation unit.

Titration, pH value, conductivity, and, for the first time, surface tension measurement are available for determining the cleaner concentration. In modular cleaning systems, the latter allows the surfactant content in the bath to be determined separately, enabling targeted re-dosing of this component. The contamination of the baths can be determined by means of fluorescence and conductivity measurements. In the future, these measurement methods will be supplemented by methods for determining total organic contamination (TOC) and particle measurement. The measurements to be performed on the sample taken from the bath can be entered via the system control. Between sampling from the baths, an automatic rinsing system ensures that the results are displayed accurately on the display and, if necessary, appropriate actions are initiated, such as the addition of medium or water or a bath change.

With the standalone version, which is also

available, the samples are taken manually from the baths to be tested, and the rest of the procedure is also automatic. With both alternatives, the measurement methods can be combined as required, and additional functions or new measurement methods can be easily integrated.

Smart Drying – optimal drying with minimal time and energy consumption

Drying is not only one of the most energy-intensive processes, but also the bottleneck in parts cleaning due to the time required. Nevertheless, problems often arise – especially when different components need to be cleaned and dried. To be on the safe side, drying processes are often designed to be too long based on a worst-case scenario, which results in increased energy consumption with correspondingly high costs and reduced productivity.

The goal is therefore to obtain optimally dried parts from the system with minimized energy and time requirements. Ecoclean has implemented this with its AI-supported, intelligent Smart Drying technology for combined hot air vacuum drying processes. The basis for this is a humidity and temperature sensor

specially developed for this application, which is now standard in various types of the manufacturer’s systems.

In order to control the drying process in a time- and energy-optimized manner, the AI model of the Smart Drying technology was first trained with data from thousands of drying tests with a wide variety of components and target parameters. Based on this know-how, the AI evaluates the quality of the respective drying process by analyzing the parameters of humidity, temperature, and pressure in the process chamber. It then decides which action is most appropriate for optimal drying. For thin-walled parts or plastic workpieces, for example, this may be the supply of warm air. Essential for the use of Smart Drying technology are process-stable, reproducible processes that ensure consistent conditions in the process chamber. Worn seals or sensors that are not calibrated regularly, for example, lead to changes here.

One of the next development steps at Ecoclean is to transfer the findings from machine learning to the use of AI for the control and optimization of cleaning and rinsing processes.

UNSEEN CHEMICAL DRIFT.

REAL

OPERATIONAL DRIFT:

WHAT’S REALLY IN YOUR CLEANING SOLVENT?

Most industrial cleaning processes are running on chemicals that operators don’t fully understand—and can’t fully control

You buy a solvent expecting consistency. It’s labelled, approved, and widely used. But over time, performance drifts. Cleaning becomes inconsistent. Residues appear. Costs increase.

And no one can clearly explain why.

The Industry Problem

Chemical labels rarely tell the full story.

Components evaporate at different rates

The system begins to separate (“chemical drift”)

The boil sump and rinse zone no longer match

Recovered solvent is not the same as the original

Many “standard” cleaning solvents are actually multi-component blends. While they may perform well initially, their composition can change during use.

In real operating conditions:

The result is a process that gradually becomes unstable. This leads to:

Inconsistent cleaning performance

Increased residue risk

Higher solvent consumption

Potential safety concerns, including flammability shift

You’re no longer running a controlled process—you’re managing a variable one.

The Solution: Stability by Design

Azeotropic solvents address this issue directly.

A true azeotrope behaves as a single, stable substance, even though it contains multiple components. It cannot be separated by distillation, meaning its composition remains constant.

That delivers:

Stable boiling point

No chemical drift

Consistent cleaning performance

Reliable recovery and reuse

What you start with is what you keep.

The Fraser Technologies Approach

At Fraser Technologies, we see this problem regularly— customers trying to fix performance issues that are actually caused by unstable chemistry.

We don’t just supply solvents. We engineer stable, repeatable cleaning processes.

Our focus is to:

Understand how your solvent behaves over time, not just at install Identify risks linked to blended or unstable systems

Implement solutions that maintain process integrity and safety Support with ongoing optimisation and solvent management

Because a solvent that drifts is not a solution.

A Proven Alternative

True azeotropic products, such as Opteon™ SF80®, offer:

Long-term stability in operation

Non-flammability under normal operating conditions

Consistent performance

Effective recovery without composition change

In many cases, they can directly replace unstable blends— improving control, reducing waste, and lowering risk.

The Bottom Line

If you don’t understand how your solvent behaves over time, you don’t control your process.

Fraser Technologies exists to remove that uncertainty— delivering cleaning solutions that are stable, predictable, and built for real-world performance.
