As February begins the club continues to move forward into upcoming spring with improvements to the golf course, and facilities. PLaying the course recently you surely notice the work that the Golf Course Maintenance guys have been doing week after week. Our goals and checklists are quickly being accomplished with the filling of ruts and unneeded cart paths throughout the course, by moving the entire two mountains on #6, and #7 that were in the rough and covering those rough places that had some rocks and tree roots around the course.
We had tremendous help from Bubba Atchley ( as a member) with his skill level to break the hills with an excavator and his knowledge on handling a motor grader. Not only can you now see the lake from the dining room through the trees or grill that was always there by tee box #6, but even better is the view from the tee box on #7, where now the entire lake is visible. That improvement alone and the cleanup of the gully on #8 giving clear vision across to hole #11, really have made outstanding changes to the layout of the course recently.
We have many other things that will occur before we head into March but be patient because some of the tilling and leveling and sod improvements in a few of the fairways of #3, $4, and number #6 will cause a few inconveniences until we get the work completed. Additional work in the traps like #11 that some have commented about as well will continue to be on-going, and some work on removal of bermuda that was allowed to creep into some greens over a period of several years willl slowly and gently, be removed. We will blocking off some old cart roads around #10 and #8 that creeped into existence and took away from the overall "look and character of the hole over time-please observe all staked off or blocked off areas. Our goals is to take Hillcrest Golf course from a "good course" to a visibly great course, and eventually an exceptional playing, and visibly enjoyable day of golf. Please please tell our GCM guys and let them know that you appreciate all their efforts.
Looks like it was a pretty mild winter and that temperatures could be as high as 80 degrees for the first part of February. All things around the club appear to be moving on the path that I really have endeavored to visualize, so thank you for many of the compliments. I will tell you there are times that I feel we are just getting to the top of the mountain then ( like this month) we had 3 different wells that went out and had to remove and replace motors and different components that exceeded over $25 thousand in costs, as well as some AC issues that ran over $10K to remedy.. Prayers are appreciated and the affirmation is also always well received.
Have a great February and please dine with us and bring friends out to play golf, and join the club as we continue the overall mission of providing
Great Golf
Great Food
Great People

Some improvements here if you have noticed in the past month or two include the new carpet in the Boardroom and event room as well as small tweaks to plate ware and flatware along the way.. Our intent is to eventually remove and replace the 20 year old carpeting and furnishings in the dining room as well sometime this year. to improve the dining experience that we already believe is one of the best dining views anywhere in Lubbock.
A warm welcome to two new associations that have moved their monthly meetings to our facilities for 2025. Lubbock Christian Women's Connection will begin their luncheons ( moving from Lubbock Country Club to our facilities) starting February as well as the Lubbock Ski Club ( better known as Texas Twisters) who moved their monthly meetings from the former Logan's Steakhouse. We are honored that they chose our facility over many different locations after comparing pricing and taste testing our dishes.
These sorts of "gets" or monthly meetings adds to our overall revenue and makes many of the improvements possible to the overall facilities and golf course. We ask every member to consider bringing or introducing your monthly association meetings to consider the same move in 2025.
Our Valentine's Dinner date nights are approaching quickly so please make your reservations for your family and friends as quickly as possible. Last year we served almost 75 people and it looks like many of those that discovered that the food was great as well as not the wait for other local restaurants have already renewed their reservations for this year. We actually have two nights available. Thursday the 13th is available for a 5 course Wine dinner where wines are paired with each course of the meal and the experience that Cody King and Chef prepared earlier this year was definitely over the top. Menu and cost per person are in the newsletter as well as the dining flyers we send out. Friday evening ( Valentine's Day) will also be in the newsletter with regards to menu and pricing. Please make reservations as early as possible.

New equipment for 2025 has started to arrive. We already have the new Callaway Elyte driver available to demo here in the shop and will have the new Taylor Made Qi35 within the next few weeks. I still recommend fittings if you are in the market for a new driver or set of irons, and those can be arranged here in the shop. Lastly, we have are working on scheduling demo days for the spring, so keep an eye out for those!
As always, please contact the golf shop if you have any questions about new equipment. (806)765-5208.

Greetings tennis players, Pam Saffran gives us words of wisdom; she is an avid tennis player and licensed mental health counselor. She states that tennis has taught her how to handle pressure in ways she did not think were possible. She vividly remembers serving at match point in a deciding tiebreaker. She knew that the only way to get the serve in and win the match was to focus on the basics. She blocked out the noise and trusted the training and hit a great serve and won the point and the match. Such experiences taught her how to stay composed under pressure, whether in tennis, at work or during a personal challenge. The skills she has gained form high stakes moments on the court have helped her gain more self confidence and resilience in every day life. Tennis has also taught her how to embrace setbacks and use them to grow. In one tournament, she lost the first set 6-1 and felt completely defeated. She reminded herself to take it one point at a time. She clawed her way back into the match and eventually won in three sets. Situations like this taught her to fight through adversity and keep going even when things feel hopeless. Now she remembers that nothing is final until she stops trying.
She follows this up by saying that one of most transformative lessons tennis has taught her is the power of mindfulness. She has learned to focus in the moment. For example, when in a long rally on court, she zones in on the sound of the ball hitting the racket and the rhythm of the footwork. She says it is almost meditative, to let go of all else and stay present (one point at a time).
In conclusion, she states that tennis has been much more than just a sport to her; it has been a mentor and taught her lessons that no textbook or classroom could. It has shown her how to stay calm under pressure, how to face setbacks with resilience and how to stay present in the moment when life feels overwhelming.
Well said Pam!
Concerning tennis at Hillcrest, the weather was pretty mild in November, December and much of January and we have had a lot of good doubles going on most weekends. Hopefully old man winter will lay low and there will be many good weather days to come. See you on the courts!
I want to start off by thanking Bubba Atchley for all the hard work he has done with the dirt work. Over the past few weeks, we have moved a lot of dirt. We are using all the dirt from the big mounds between 6 and 7 to fill in low spots and to help build up new tee boxes. The views looking down to the lake are so much better.
Over the next couple of months, you will see several changes to the course. We are adding a few new tee boxes to 4, 5/16, 13 and 15. Also, we will be making a few tee boxes bigger, like the front tees on 4. There has not been a good area for the white tees in years. We have also started much needed work on the bunkers, we have started digging the top layer off and are finding lots of sand underneath in a lot of bunkers. We are working on getting all the mounds that have been built up over the years knocked down. After this is complete, we will start shaping the bunkers and getting nice clean edges on them then will begin working the sand and adding sand where needed. There will be a few bunkers that we will fill in and make smaller, like 17. Please be patient, the bunkers will not be in the best shape for a while, which I know is nothing new, but it will be well worth it once they are done. Bunker maintenance is going to be one of my top priorities, they will be taken care of just as well as any other part of the course. We will also be adding irrigation around the course, between 6 and 7, right of 14 and between 9 and 10. Hopefully we will get some of the other areas without irrigation done as the year goes on. There will be several changes in how things get done on the golf course, some of you will notice, some won't be as obvious, but all will be done to give the members the best golf course possible. Spread the word to family and friends, Hillcrest is on the rise, and they do not want to miss out on being a part of it.
