PRINCIPAL, JEFF DAVIS I am constantly reminded of the need to maintain a focus on excellence in all that we do. The culture that we have created in the developed world is very much centred on self, rather than service as the media continues to prosper the ideal that true happiness is found when we receive something. I have been reading some books lately that are focussing on debunking this theory and establishing a paradigm more consistent with scriptural teaching of service. One of the real life scenarios illustrates this concept well. A struggling mother running her own house cleaning business in the USA was looking for work. At the same time a very wealthy lady bought a mansion in this area
and was looking for a cleaner. The wealthy lady started going through the newspaper ads for house cleaners – not one was invited back. Eventually the struggling mother received a phone call to come and clean the wealthy lady's mansion so she went knowing that this was a one off job as she expected to be treated like all of the other cleaners. She went into the house and cleaned like she always did, dusting from the top down, putting any lose coins in a coffee cup on the kitchen table, fluffing the cushions and making sure that the bed linen had no creases. She left the house in perfect order pleased with her efforts. That night the wealthy lady called the struggling mother and offered her the role of house cleaner for the mansion. The struggling mother was overwhelmed and inquired why she was being offered this opportunity. The wealthy lady replied $1.61! Not sure how this had any reference, the struggling mum humbly confessed that she didn’t understand to which the wealthy lady replied; “I left $1.61 in coins strategically placed around the house. You found every coin and left it on the kitchen bench in a coffee cup. The other cleaners found some money, 80 cents, $1.41, $1.23 and some kept it, but
you were the first to find the entire $1.61 and for that reason I trust that you will be the best cleaner I could hope for.” It sounds so logical, but we often overlook the action part of this. To find the $1.61, the struggling mother had to clean every nook and cranny in the mansion, be truthful in handing it over and expect nothing in return. While doing this she had the expectation that she would never be asked back, but in fact her reward for being honest, hardworking and full of integrity was that she obtained permanent employment. Recently I have been focussing on character. This is an incredible quality that we often overlook as parents raising our children. We want our children to be academically successful, winning in sport and being the best performer that they can be. All of these are important and as the Principal of Hillcrest Christian College, I too aspire that all students achieve these outcomes. Yet as I learn more about how we develop, the single most important gift a parent can give their child is the development of a sound character. A character that knows one’s self, is respectful of the efforts of those around them, is honest, works hard and serves others wherever possible.
When these things are achieved, success seems to come effortlessly. Aristotle 2000 years ago said, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of wisdom”. While not a scriptural verse, it highlights the importance of understanding who we are and what makes us wise. This is insightful and helps us begin the search for character. "Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out." PROVERBS 10:9
We often try and plan the path we travel. This is a great asset, but when we walk the path of integrity we can walk securely and again our character will be evident. When we do this, the unexpected happens, such as when the struggling mother received the job offer. As parents, having a child who has an impeccable character and walks with integrity is something we should desire for every one of our children. Add to this, acts of service, and we would change the future of the world. My prayer is that we as a community see the richness of life that this character would bring our children and then work tirelessly to create the environment where this can be developed.

YEAR 6 AT CROSSROADS On Friday 6th November, students from Year 6 were privileged to visit the Crossroads Community at the Newlife Uniting Church, Robina. Crossroads is an opportunity for the disabled community of the Gold Coast to get together to worship God and to participate in a variety of activities throughout the day. Our students were blessed to be able to share in the church service as well as share morning tea. We were made to feel so welcome. Crossroads was an amazing experience. I spent most of the week before Crossroads fretting over how it would go. Whether it would be uncomfortable, whether I might say something wrong, or just how the whole trip would turn out. But when I got there, I was instantly enchanted by the atmosphere. Everyone was so excited to see us, and they were so welcoming. Overall the trip has made me realise how important it is to have community, have a place where you feel welcomed, where you are not judged, and where you belong.
YEAR 6 STUDIES This term Year 6 have been studying renewable energy and as part of these studies, students had to create land yachts. It was a great morning of testing!!
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT: QUINCY SYMONDS Congratulations to Quincy Symonds, Year 2, who was nominated as ‘Australian of the Day’ through an award program set up through the Commonwealth Bank. Quincy is recognised as one of the best seven year old surfers and skaters in Australia. In the surfing world, she is known as ‘The Flying Squirrel’ and has made numerous guest appearances on television shows, including a recent episode of ‘Humpty’s Big Adventure’ which teaches children the importance of getting active. Quincy states “I love to surf! You get to meet new people, go to new places and have lots of fun!” Congratulations, Quincy! We are proud of your achievements.
YEAR 1 ECHO ART SHORT COURSE This term students involved in the Year 1 ECHO Art Short Course have investigated what collage is and its history. They have reviewed the work of artists such as Eric Carle, Jeannie Baker and Kate Toms. They have produced one piece of artwork that utilises the ideas of Eric Carle and are now busy designing another collage where they will explore the use of texture and fabrics.
YEAR 2 EXCURSION TO HINZE DAM Monday 2 November saw two busloads of very excited Year 2 classes heading for Hinze Dam. We have been studying the Water Cycle and exploring water conservation, so what better place to continue our investigations. We walked the dam

wall and heard how it was created and the vegetation surrounding it. The children watched a movie, participated in a craft project and viewed living creatures in the dam water through magnifying glasses. The day focused on water cycles as well as water storage, water wastage / protections and how we use water. It was a fun and informative day. The exhausting heat made for a very peaceful trip back to school!
YEAR 5 & 6 ECHO It was organised, creative and enthusiastic design and construction at its best in “The Palace” on Thursday as students from Year 5 and 6 ECHO engaged in the collaborative learning process to construct “Rube Goldberg Machines”. The theme of their machines followed our unit “My Journey in Space” and all machines
portrayed a Science Fiction theme. Phases included tumbling dominoes, racing marbles, spinning planets and cascading ping pong balls to name a few.

FROM THE HEAD OF SENIOR LEARNING COMMUNITY As this year draws to a close we have a lot to celebrate. Next week on Tuesday 17 November we have our Year 7 to 12 Presentation Night. As part of the Presentation Night we also induct our College leaders for 2016. It is an evening of celebration and for our Year 12s the beginning of their last week at the College. This ceremony has a 6:15pm for 6:45pm start. Students are required to wear formal uniform including tie with Year 10 to 12 students will need to wear their blazer. There are many things being planned in the Senior Learning Community and I thought I would take this opportunity to inform you of some of the key ones. NEW STUDENT LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES This year we changed our student leadership structure for 2016. As we are now a Senior Learning Community we took the opportunity to review the leadership model in Year 9. In 2016 Year 9 students will have the opportunity to be HouseVice Captains or leaders for the Student Representative Council. This provides more opportunities for student leaders and a framework to help them develop their leadership skills whilst actively contributing to the College community.
STUDENT LEADER INDUCTION SERVICE 2016 In the first week of Term 1, 2016 we will hold a Leadership Induction Service where we will induct all the College Leaders (Year 9 and 12) along with all Year 12s as they are all leaders in the College community. This replaces the Year 9 leadership induction that has taken place at Presentation Night in past years. NEW HAT FOR YEARS 10-12, 2016 In 2016 all students in Years 10 to 12 will be wearing a new College hat. Students in current Year 9 to 11 have been trying on hats for sizes over the past few weeks. The College is providing each student in these year levels with the new hat at no cost. We hope to have these hats available for the students for the first week of the term. This does mean that Year 10 students for 2016 will have to purchase their own red tie. In the past this has been given at the Presentation Night Ceremony but this will not occur this year. YEAR 10 2016 Our Year 9 students are the first members of our Senior Learning Community to be able to avail themselves of the guaranteed subject offerings. Over the past two weeks Mr Wotton has been speaking to them about the final subjects and combinations that are on offer. We have had to make some changes to the offerings to cater for the needs of the College and the students. All students will be asked to confirm their choices over the next few days.

Any Year 9 family can contact the College to seek further information or advice in order to help in the selection of subjects for Year 10, 2016. RECOGNITION OF INVOLVEMENT BEYOND THE CLASSROOM Next week on Wednesday a Year 10 to 12 Assembly in Period 1 and a Year 7 to 9 Assembly in Period 3 will occur in order to recognise students participation, commitment and achievements in the complete range of co-curricular that is offered by the College beyond our normal daily programs. Students can receive a recognition, commendation or excellence certificate in recognition of their sporting, performing arts, cocurricular or community service & outreach. In addition to this the College is introducing three levels of recognition. These are: Half Colours, Full Colours and the Honour Wall. These are to recognise the achievements of individuals and teams who have excelled in their chosen area of endeavour. Half and Full colours will be awarded to students who have achieved this in activities that are directly provided by the College. The Wall of Honour is recognition for students who have achieved excellence in their chosen endeavour, whether it be directly through College activities or their achievements outside of the College.
We welcome any families who might wish to attend the ceremony. They will be held in the Theatre. “ONE STOP SHOP” FOR START OF 2016 YEAR To help families prepare for 2016 we are trialling a “one stop shop” approach where all College services and staff will be available. This will be for an extended afternoon/evening on Thursday 21 January 2016 from 2.00pm until 8.00pm. There will also be a community BBQ, child minding and other activities available to help families access these services. The following services will be available throughout the afternoon and evening • Payment of fees, bus tickets etc • Locker selection • Text books (digital and print) • Timetables • Uniforms • Co-curricular information • Subject selection advice • Careers Office • Technology setup of devices • Meet the teacher This will not be the only opportunity to purchase uniforms and other things as the College will be open on normal business days from 18 January to the start of the College year, including Monday 25 January. Recently, the College Captains and Vice Captains were invited to Parliament House to spend time with our local member, Ros Bates, MP. In what was a valuable time, the students had private meetings with many politicians including the Leader of the Opposition, Laurence Springborg MP and The Deputy Leader of the Opposition, John-Paul Langbroek, MP. Despite her busy schedule, Ms Bates was very generous in taking the students on a tour of Parliament House and encouraging them in their future endeavours.
Our budding Multimedia developers have been at it again in ICT during Term 4. This time through, our wonderfully focused Year 10 class have been working with a software usually reserved for the older year levels, namely Blender's 3D modelling suite, and we must acknowledge their immense 'capacity to create'. After moving through obligatory folio items in the first half of Term, students have expanded upon their new-found knowledge and skill set to create some stunningly unique, complex and 'glossy' assignment products. These items are produced with the intention of being integrated later into their own 3D video game. Here is just a visual taste of what our young and enthusiastic team has managed to put together, straight from their own mind's eye!
red cross blood drive thank you A big thank you to the students and staff who donated blood as part of the Red Cross Blood Drive. In total, 17 donations were made, with many others keen to be a part of this but unable to. This is a wonderfully generous act and will impact many people in a real and tangible way.

A lot of work has gone in to achieve what you see above. It has been such a pleasure to instruct and facilitate these up and coming IT professionals of the future over this year, knowing it's certainly in good hands if their imaginations and ability to apply are anything to go by. When it comes to the array of digital delights on offer in society: "Create, don't just consume!" That's the strong message our young inventors in ICT wish to convey to all...and I think you will concur, they always do a great job of showing us how "IT's" really done!
It was a difficult choice in selecting the student artist works for this year's Gold Coast Show Competition considering the plethora of creative talent attributed to Hillcrest students. Even so, the overwhelming success of our students, receiving a total of 10 awards was a pleasant surprise. An even greater surprise was the recent arrival of the beautiful handcrafted glass trophy, awarded to the school with the greatest number of winning entries. Congratulations to Grace Crossley (Year 12), Grace Phillips (Year 11), Chelsea Bellamy, Kate Neilson, Jemima Roze (Year 10), Chloe Deetlefs, Isabella Nunnick, Bronte Redenbach, Mia Weekes (Year 9) and Gracie Prasser (Year 7) for a commendable achievement.

SPORT STATE ATHLETICS Congratulations to Simioluwa (Simi) Thomsen-Ajayi, Jacob Radloff and Saxon Bruce who over the past month have represented Hillcrest at the State Athletics Championships. While official results are yet to be provided to the school, a special congratulations goes to Simi who came Second in the 15 Years High Jump clearing 1.95m. Simi will be eligible to represent Hillcrest at the Australian Schools Championships next year.
ISABELLA GILL During the September holidays, Isabella Gill (Year 11) traveled to Poland to compete in the Olympic Hopes Regatta for Canoeing and Kayaking. She was one of six 16 year old girls chosen to represent Australia at this international event. She competed in the K4 200m & 500m, and K2 500m,
making it through to the Semi Finals on two occasions. Following this event, Isabella represented Hillcrest at the Queensland State School Sprints for Canoe / Kayak in the K1 200m and 500m, and the K2 200m and 500m. Isabella achieved a Silver Medal in both the K2 events. Well done Isabella - we are all very proud of you in your achievements.
AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Congratulations to Luke Hawkins (7), Tyler De Snoo (9) and Sam Hawkins (10) who each represented QLD City at the Australian Futsal Championships over the September Holidays. Luke and Tyler's team can 2nd in the tournament, while Sam's team achieved Australian Champion Status by winning their age division. Capping off this success was Sam and Tyler both being offered positions on the Australian Futsal Team travelling to Taiwan in 2016. Well done boys and thank you to your families in their continued support.
BASKETBALL INFORMATION NIGHT On Thursday 26/11 Hillcrest will be holding its Basketball Information Evening, which will outline the major events and structures for 2016. All current parents involved in Basketball, or prospective/ new students interested in the program (regardless of their age) are encouraged to attend. The evening will overview the 'big picture' of Hillcrest Basketball in 2016, launch our 2016 'Hoops Mania' Fundraiser, and reveal the structure of the new Hillcrest U15 Freshman Boys Rep Team. It will also give the community an opportunity to provide feedback on the Basketball Program. The event will be held in the College Theatre from 6:00pm-6:45pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to use music for outreach and ministry within our local community. We invite families to join us for this service and join with us in a shared morning-tea with the congregation afterwards.

COLLEGE NEWS IMPORTANT HEALTH NEWS The medication administration forms can be found on the family portal under College Services & Information. Then click on Health. These need to be filled out and brought in together with any medications supplied to school for your child's temporary or intermittent use. Only Panadol and Antihistamine medication is supplied for use with parent consent which can be also set up with the same medication administration form. Antihistamine, even with consent, will be given only after contacting a parent. The consent is for emergencies only when a parent cannot be contacted and the need is urgent as most antihistamines are once daily medications. If your child experiences frequent allergy symptoms you may provide an antihistamine of choice to first aid along with the medication administration form with the consent ticked, again a parent will be called when the need to use it arises. Please ensure all medications are in their original box with a pharmacy label with your child's name on it. If your child has frequent bouts of asthma please supply an updated asthma plan to first aid to keep with your child's Ventolin if kept in first aid. If any ASCIA plans are updated for those with children who have anaphylaxis, please supply a copy to first aid as soon as possible to keep with your child's epi-pen kit. All medications need to be stored in first aid for students and at no time are students allowed to share their medications with friends.

THE UNIFORM SHOP Uniforms for 2016 All students requiring any new uniforms for 2016 are to either visit the shop during opening hours or make an appointment for a uniform fitting during Term 4, 2015. Families can purchase or lay-by uniforms at time of fitting. The uniform shop will be open in January 2016 for lay-by collection and size exchanges (if required) Please make your Term 4 uniform fitting appointment as soon as possible. 1.
