PATHWAYS AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT AT HILLCREST
The Careers and Pathways process in the Senior Learning Community at Hillcrest begins with an exploration of self and the world of work. This is built upon throughout the senior years with opportunities to develop and shape a student’s direction and design their individual pathway. Below is an outline of the Careers and Pathways timeline and key opportunities available to assist students in the decision making process.

Making a Plan
• Create my plan for the future (ATAR or skills pathway)
• Understand the support network around me

• Explore VET Courses (add a Certificate or Diploma course to my study options if appropriate)
• Consider University subject for a semester programs (limited options available for year 10 students)
• Participate in Work Experience week (Term 3). This is an important chance to explore areas of interest in industry.
• Introduction to skill development (writing resumes, cover letters, applying and interviewing for my first job)
• Personal Pathways Planning (PPP) process to discuss goals, direction and subjects. A plan can be changed but direction gives you focus.

PATHWAYS EVENING GUIDE
Getting the most out of the Pathways Evening Attending the Pathways Evening provides a valuable opportunity to be inspired, ask questions and access key information directly from providers. Some recommendations to maximise the benefit of the evening include:
Make use of your time. The Pathways team have intentionally invited a range of guests and organisations that reflect student interests and for the benefit of students and families.
Allow enough time at the Career Expo to have your questions answered from the range of providers present.
Attend ALL sessions. Please ensure you attend the career panel sessions in an industry most aligned to your interests, as well as the other presentations on your schedule for the evening.
Ask questions. Consider what you could learn from each session - be inspired by the Industry Career Panellists! Ask questions about their career pathway - gain the most from the sessions by being an active participant.
Think about the questions you may like to ask the providers at the Career Expo.
Approaching Tertiary Institutions
You are likely to receive a university course guide with the basic information about the location, campus, courses, entry ATARs and prerequisites, but here are some areas in which you might like more information.
• Do they offer any courses I might be able to start now?
• Does a certificate or diploma course studied at school give me credit (time off your course)?
• Do they offer Student for a Semester programs?
• How big are their campuses? How big are their class sizes?
• Do I need to have an ATAR to get into this course?
• If I am not on an ATAR pathway, is there another way for me to get into this program?
• Are there any pre-requisites I need for entry?
• Do they offer Early Entry/Early offers? How do I access an Early offer?
• How is this course taught? Is it online, on-campus or mixed-mode?
• How long will this course take? How many Semesters/Trimesters/Terms do I study across the year?
• If I am accepted and I want to take a gap year, can I defer this course?
• What scholarships are available and how do I apply for them? What can I include in my application to have a better chance of success?
• Where can I get the best information to help me understand the costs of university?
• If I am an international student - is there an International Department? (note- some key details will be different from domestic students, including costs so it is very important to get the right information)
• What are some extra things I can get involved in? Sports, clubs, international exchange?
DEFINITIONS
Certificate III and higher qualifications can sometimes provide a pathway for entry into University.
Diploma level study may give up to a year’s worth of credit (called ‘recognition of prior learning’ or ‘Advanced Standing’ and is given as ‘time off’) in a related undergraduate degree.
Assumed knowledge is the minimum level of achievement in senior subjects considered necessary for successful in the first year of tertiary study.
Early Entry/Early Offer is provided by some universities. This means that a student will find out that they have a place at that university before the normal offer rounds are released through QTAC (December and January) An early offer may be gained through application and meeting that specific university criteria. The details vary between institutions.
ATAR is the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank. This is a percentile rank, not a mark of a student’s overall academic achievement in relation to that of other students. This rank indicates a student’s position relative to other students in their age group in any given year.
QCE is the Queensland Certificate of Education is Queensland’s senior school qualification. It is awarded to students by QCAA.
VET is Vocational Education and Training courses, inclusive of Certificate I through to Diploma courses.
Work Integrated Learning or Practicum Placements are Industry internships. These are an important part of relating study to the real world (just like the Work Experience Program at Hillcrest). Search for courses that have good industry engagement as this assists with employment after course completion, as well as experience to get you started.
Student for a Semester – Each University calls this something different, but it is a subject of study students can take in senior years of school that provides the experience of being a university student as well as being a low cost or free subject that can be counted towards a related undergraduate degree. Completion of a university subject whilst at school can also provide points towards the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).
A pre-requisite is an entry requirement to a degree program, such as a subject, portfolio, audition or interview that an applicant must meet before they are considered for entry.
QTAC (Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre) is an organisation that centralises the applications and offers for Queensland. Each state in Australia has their own Tertiary Admissions Centre – to which applications need to be submitted if a student wishes to study in that state. The two other Admissions Centres most commonly used by our students are:

Dr Nina Lawson
Osteopath
Dr Nina Lawson is an AHPRA registered osteopath whose passion for health and the human body has guided her career since her early teens. After discovering osteopathy’s holistic and integrative approach—and experiencing its benefits firsthand—she knew she had found the profession that aligned with her values and curiosity.
Nina holds a Bachelor of Clinical Sciences majoring in Osteopathy and Human Structure and Function, as well as a Master of Osteopathic Medicine. She also completed a Bachelor of Exercise Science, providing her with a strong foundation in movement, biomechanics, and evidence-based practice.
With more than 20 years of experience in the health industry and a decade as an osteopath, Nina is committed to providing thoughtful, patient centred care. She enjoys working with people of all ages—from infants and children to adults and older individuals—and tailors her treatment to support each patient’s wellbeing and long-term health.
Corinne O'Connor Physiotherapist
Corinne O’Connor has worked as a physiotherapist for over 30 years. She currently works in private practice treating predominantly musculoskeletal conditions, but over her career has also worked in neurological rehabilitation, hospital settings, aged care, hydrotherapy, and chronic pain rehabilitation. She has worked in regional, rural and urban locations and has found physiotherapy to be a wonderful career for flexibility around family and church life.
Victoria Renton
Dietician
Victoria Renton is a Registered Dietitian with 25 years of clinical experience across the UK and Australia. She trained in Scotland before moving to Australia, where she now works at John Flynn Hospital and in outpatient services with Ramsay Health. Victoria specialises in oncology nutrition and supports patients through all stages of their treatment journey, including hospital, day unit, and outpatient care.
Her career has included a broad range of clinical areas, but she is particularly passionate about holistic, patient-centred care. Victoria has a strong interest in emerging areas such as metabolic medicine and the role of nutrition in managing chronic conditions. She is also involved in group education programs, such as Cardiac Rehabilitation, helping patients build practical strategies for long-term health and wellbeing.

Kate Swenson
Veterinary Nurse
Kate Swenson is a qualified Veterinary Nurse who completed her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing in New South Wales in 2007. She has worked across the UK and both the east and west coasts of Australia, gaining experience in general practice, emergency, and specialist veterinary settings. Kate has also contributed internationally, volunteering with Vets Beyond Borders in India, further broadening her clinical and cultural experience.
More recently, Kate has progressed into a leadership role as Nurse Manager at Reedy Creek Vet Surgery, where she has also completed a leadership program through the Lincoln Institute. Her career reflects a strong commitment to animal care, professional growth, and leadership within the veterinary field.
Dr Justin Ward Veterinarian
Dr Justin Ward was born and raised In South Africa with a keen interest in wildlife which eventually led to his decision to study as a veterinarian. After attending university in South Africa, Justin travelled the world, whilst working in the UK before moving to Australia. Having opened multiple practices over 26 years in his profession. Justin has seen his current practice, Reedy Creek Veterinary Surgery, go from one vet and one nurse when he opened it in 2012 to 10 vets and 16 nurses 14 years on. Justin has a keen interest in surgery and has attained a surgical membership through the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. He has also served on various local and national committees of the Australian Veterinary Association and is a current member of the Veterinary Business Group’s executive committee.

Brodie Fernance
Architect
Brodie Fernance is an architect based in northern NSW. His experience includes projects of varied types, scales and complexity, from large institutional projects like university buildings and church campuses, to single residences and small community buildings. Currently, Brodie is working on a range of housing projects, a private art gallery and even horse stables.
Caroline Hook
Architect
and Interior Designer
Caroline Hook studied a Bachelor of Architecture degree at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Graduating with distinction in design and receiving other design technology awards, she was able to quickly start her career in Australia with a top architectural firm on the Gold Coast. Caroline worked on a variety of projects from high rise residential, hotels, resorts and retail design.
After working in architecture for a number of years she moved into interior design focused projects with the opportunity to design interiors for a major retail centre. With a family of 5 children, Caroline is now able to work flexibly on high end homes, home renovations, new build interior fit outs, and property styling. Also extending into furniture up styling and commissioned art.
Her inspiration comes from travelling to many countries, experiencing how different cultures create unique design. Her greatest reward is to see the transformation of spaces and the joy it brings to her clients.
Australian Defence Forces - Room 35
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) offers a wide range of careers across the Navy, Army and Air Force, combining service, technical skills and leadership. Roles span areas such as engineering, aviation, healthcare, cybersecurity, logistics and trades, with opportunities for both direct entry and further study.
The ADF provides structured training, nationally recognised qualifications and clear career progression pathways. Personnel may also have opportunities for travel, teamwork and specialised skill development, while contributing to national security and humanitarian efforts.

Robyn Carter
Finance Director
Robyn Carter is the founder and director of Carter Group, a successful finance business she established five years ago to help businesses grow through strategic financial leadership and advice. With more than 20 years’ experience across retail, beauty, consumer goods, FMCG, services and aviation, Robyn has helped businesses improve profitability, strengthen cash flow, and achieve rapid growth.
Originally from Sydney and now based on the Gold Coast, she is passionate about leadership, mentoring and empowering business owners to make confident decisions using financial data. Robyn believes strong leadership and informed decision-making are key drivers of successful businesses and positive workplace cultures.
Sarah Staerk
Public Relations Consultant
Up to 80% of what you see in the news and on social media is influenced by PR professionals working behind the scenes. Public relations is often called a “dark art” because much of the work happens quietly in the background, shaping how companies, CEOs, politicians, sports teams and celebrities are perceived. Sarah Staerk has worked in PR and communications for more than 25 years across industries including property, technology, tourism, sport, hospitality and major events. Most of her career has been spent running her own consultancies, helping individuals and businesses manage reputation, media and public image.Her work includes corporate communications, crisis management, reputation repair, podcast production, social media and political strategy. She advises clients on what to say, when to say it and how to respond in highpressure situations. Sarah also guest lectures at Bond University and The University of Queensland.
Jay Stockwell Technology Entrepreneur
Jay Stockwell is the Founder and CEO of MagicBlocks, an AI platform that helps businesses have natural, human-like conversations with their customers across chat, email, text and voice. His path is a good example of how curiosity and a mix of seemingly unrelated interests can become a real advantage.
At Griffith University, Jay studied two very different fields — Behavioural Science, the psychology of how people make decisions, and Multimedia/IT, how to build with technology — and has spent over 23 years combining them to grow companies from small startups into household names, including the fintech Nimble and digital home-loan company Beeline. Today his work focuses on building AI that helps businesses grow and gives customers better experiences. Outside of work, Jay enjoys riding his bike, getting into nature, and listening to music.

Josh Coghlan

Josh Coghlan is the Managing Director and Developer of Rome, a thirdgeneration, family-owned construction company, specialising in mid-range to luxury residential projects across Northern NSW and South East Queensland. With 14 years of experience in the industry, he began his career as a qualified carpenter before progressing into leadership and development roles.
Josh has a strong interest in architecturally driven projects and works closely with architects, designers and clients to bring concepts to life. His role involves overseeing project planning, site management, and delivery, ensuring highquality outcomes and efficient timelines.
He is passionate about building lasting relationships within the industry and delivering homes that are both functional and designed for long-term living. Josh’s career highlights the diverse pathways available in construction, from trades through to project management and business leadership
Rowan Isaacs
Entrepreneur and Civil Infrastructure Director
Rowan Isaacs is a business owner and entrepreneur with more than 20 years of experience across a range of industries in Australia and overseas. Diagnosed with ADHD at the age of eight, Rowan faced challenges throughout his schooling and was initially encouraged to leave school early and pursue a trade. Instead, he completed school and discovered strengths in mathematics and business, setting the foundation for a highly successful career. Over the years, Rowan has started and sold six companies across Australia and Los Angeles, including work in property development.
He now leads Groundlinx, a specialist Horizontal Directional Drilling company working with major clients including NBN, Google, and key water, power and gas providers. Rowan is passionate about helping young people recognise that there are many different pathways to success and encouraging them to stay open to opportunity. He enjoys sharing the possibilities available in civil infrastructure, from hands-on outdoor work and travel to strong long-term career potential.
Kevin Mutch
Construction Project Manager and Director
Kevin Mutch is the Founder and Managing Director of Procon Consultants, a construction and project management consultancy supporting clients across the built environment. Kevin has built his career around helping organisations plan, manage and deliver complex construction projects, with a focus on practical problem-solving, clear communication and strong commercial outcomes.
His work involves collaborating with clients, consultants, contractors and project teams to navigate the challenges of construction, from early planning through to delivery. Kevin is passionate about helping young people understand the wide range of opportunities available in the construction industry, including pathways beyond traditional trades, such as project management, advisory, client-side representation and business leadership. He looks forward to sharing insights into what a career in construction can look like, the skills that matter, and the importance of being curious, reliable and willing to keep learning.

Glen Brearley
Musician and Audio Producer
Glen Brearley has been a musician, composer, music producer, and audio engineer for more than 25 years, splitting his time between touring, recording, business ventures, and radio imaging. Most recently he was the Imaging Producer for Hot Tomato, where he also performed character Voice Overs and parody jingles. His career has spanned performance across a wide range of genres and events, from corporate covers to small original music venues, to touring festivals. He has also worked as an AV technician for corporate events, and as a music tutor teaching Piano and Saxophone.
Julia Budden
Landscape Designer and Artist
Julia Budden is a Landscape Designer with over 20 years’ experience assisting Landscaping businesses design and install gardens. Julia originally studied Psychology and a Post grad in Human Resources Management, but at 27 feeling unhappy at work, she could no longer ignore her creative calling and love of nature. Landscape Design taught her very practical and artistic design and software skills that she paired with her love of colour, textures and helping people and the environment.
When her kids were young, she began to yearn for more creativity and selfexpression and took up painting again and teaching herself her artistic skills. She also ran kids nature & art workshops and studied a further post grad in Counselling. Julia has never been afraid to follow her interests in her career and as a result she has done a lot of different things that have all served her at different times in her life.
Alongside Landscape Design, Julia paints and exhibits her artworks, and sells her nature-inspired artworks both locally and overseas.
Jae Mesaric
Studio Manager and Copywriter
If organisation were an Olympic sport, Jae Mesaric would be a strong contender. Having wrangled the daily operations of a lively family of seven, she has mastered the art of balancing chaos, competing priorities, and the occasional missing school sock with remarkable efficiency and joy.
Jae brings that same energy and precision to every project she manages. With a background as Studio Manager at Theory Agency, copywriter, and most recently Studio Accounts Manager, she combines creative thinking with a keen eye for detail, ensuring projects stay on track from concept to completion.
Fuelled by copious cups of chai tea, Jae thrives on creating structure, solving problems, and keeping things ticking along behind the scenes so that the designers at Theory can run amuck, creating their best work.
When she’s not coordinating schedules or managing workflows, she can often be found unintentionally waging war on her husband’s plants, an ongoing battle in which the plants rarely emerge victorious.

Dr Aidan Coleman
Senior University Lecturer
Dr Aidan Coleman is a Senior Lecturer at Southern Cross University in the Faculty of Education. He is the coordinator for creative writing and also teaches in the areas of literature and English education. Besides academic articles, he has written three volumes of poetry, a series of Shakespeare textbooks and a literary biography of the poet John Forbes (Melbourne UP, 2027). Aidan worked for thirteen years as an English and History teacher and received a National Excellence in Teaching Award (NEiTA). His research interests span poetry, Shakespeare and Australian literature.
Jasmin Dall'Acqua
Secondary Teacher
Jasmin Dall’Acqua is a high school Business and Humanities teacher at Somerset College. She holds a Bachelor of Business from Bond University, as well as a Bachelor of Arts/Education and a Master of Business from Southern Cross University. Before becoming a teacher, Jasmin worked for four and a half years for the Australian Taxation Office and spent seven years mentoring young people through a non-profit music programme in Palm Beach. These experiences inspired her passion for teaching and supporting young people to grow in confidence and reach their potential. Now in her seventh year of teaching, Jasmin is passionate about creating supportive and inclusive learning environments where students feel encouraged to thrive. She has undertaken a variety of leadership roles, including Acting Head of House positions, and currently serves as Advocates Coordinator, leading the Debating, Mooting, Model United Nations and Public Speaking programmes.
Tammy McBride
Early Childhood Educator and Centre Director
Tammy McBride has worked in the early childhood sector for over 20 years. She began her career as a Bachelor-trained Early Childhood Teacher, where she developed a deep passion for the early years and the significant impact educators can have on a child’s development.
Tammy believes the early years are critical for building strong foundations in learning, confidence and wellbeing. She values the opportunities the profession provides to inspire, create, connect and make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families.
She is currently the Director and Co-Owner of Country Lane Early Learning Centre, where she focuses on supporting both children and educators. Tammy is particularly passionate about mentoring her team, helping educators grow in confidence and capability while working collaboratively to provide the best possible start for every child.

Emergency Services - Room 32
Ricky Arnold Paramedic
Ricky has been a paramedic for 31 years, 28 of those as a Critical Care Paramedic. Originally qualified in South Africa and moved to Australia 15 years ago. Ricky is currently stationed out of Burleigh Heads Ambulance Station and works on their rapid response vehicle.
Paul Beck Fireman
Paul has been a Firefighter on the Gold Coast for 30 years. During this time he has been stationed at Surfers Paradise, Robina, Nerang and Bilinga. He has been a state instructor in Technical Rescue which involves disciplines such as Swift Water, Urban Search and Rescue, Vertical Rescue, Confined Space and Trench Rescue. He has been involved in multiple deployments both nationally and internationally including Cyclone Larry in Innisfail, Cyclone Yasi in Cairns and the Christchurch earthquake.
Jess Ollard Police Officer
Police have an incredible role in our community and their day-to-day never looks the same - with so many unique offerings and experiences in the career. Jess Ollard has been a Police Officer for more than 10 years and is currently a Senior Constable in the Rapid Action and Patrols unit based on the Gold Coast. Jess did her first 5 years at Logan Central station and then 3 years at Broadbeach station.

Engineering - Room 22
Carl Greenhalgh Hydraulic Engineer
A Building Services Hydraulic Engineer designs building services and gains authorities' approval. Services included are gas, water, sewer and stormwater.
Carl Greenhalgh started his career as a plumber in a family business in Sydney which completed plumbing works for apartment buildings. He started as an apprentice and worked his way up through the years to plumbing site manager and that's when Carl got the taste for hydraulic design, looking at Hydraulic designs most days gave him a good understanding of the design principles as the plumber had to then install and make sure it worked.
After an injury to his leg that required surgery and would put Carl out of physical work for up to six months, he then started looking into becoming a hydraulic designer. Carl undertook a Diploma course in Hydraulic Building Services Engineering and changed career paths, using his knowledge and experience of installation of building services which proved to be a great asset.
Carl has worked on some of Queensland biggest apartment and commercial building projects, undertaking design and site inspection of plumbing installation. Every day in this job is different!
Trent Purdon
Civil Engineer
Trent manages civil engineering delivery for MLEI’s Gold Coast team, with a focus on infrastructure, urban development and practical project outcomes. His work supports clients through feasibility, design coordination, approvals, documentation and construction-phase delivery. His approach is grounded in practical civil design, stakeholder coordination and clear delivery pathways. Trent helps project teams resolve constraints early so sites can move forward with confidence and a strong understanding of construction requirements.
Trent has over 20 years’ experience and holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil and is a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) and Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng). He provides senior leadership and supervision for a team of 30 staff in addition to undertaking Court Appeal work as an expert witness.
Jones Santos
Mechanical Engineer
Jones Santos is a Mechanical Engineer, graduated in 2006, with a Master’s degree in Equipment Engineering and over 15 years of experience working across chemical and petrochemical industries. He has built a strong career focused on reliability, maintenance, and continuous improvement of industrial equipment.
Currently based in New South Wales, Jones works in the recycling industry, where he is responsible for ensuring equipment reliability and performance, contributing directly to more efficient operations and a cleaner environment. In addition to his engineering qualifications, Jones is also a qualified boilermaker, which gives him a practical, hands-on understanding of machinery and allows him to work effectively both in the field and in engineering office roles. This combination of technical knowledge and practical experience supports his approach to solving problems and improving industrial systems.

Jaden Fernance Medical Student
Jaden completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Bond University and is currently studying a Doctor of Medicine at Griffith University. Through his academic journey, he has developed a growing interest in clinical medicine and gained valuable experience navigating university admissions, academic preparation, and the transition from secondary school to tertiary education. Having recently progressed through these pathways himself, Jaden is well placed to provide practical guidance and support to students considering similar educational and career pursuits.
Tracy Foo Pharmacist
Tracy Foo completed a Bachelor of Pharmacy at University of South Australia in Adelaide in 2008. Following graduation, she undertook a one-year pharmacy internship at a private hospital in Brisbane. Tracy subsequently relocated to the Gold Coast, where she worked as an Oncology Pharmacist in a private hospital setting for 13 years, gaining extensive experience in cancer care and clinical pharmacy services.
For the past two years, Tracy has been employed as an Oncology Pharmacist with NSW Health at Tweed Valley Hospital, continuing to provide specialised oncology pharmacy services within the public health sector.
Nicole Hope Nurse and Educator
Nicole Hope began her career in nursing straight after school, studying at university before joining Liverpool Hospital, a major teaching hospital in Sydney. Although she had hoped to work in paediatrics, an early rotation in intensive care opened the door to a wide range of opportunities. Nicole spent 10 years as an intensive care nurse, followed by seven years as a Nurse Unit Manager, where she responded to emergency medical calls across the hospital. Her leadership experience led to senior administrative roles, including overseeing patient flow for an 800-bed hospital and project managing the implementation of an additional emergency response tier across the area health service. Along the way, Nicole completed postgraduate qualifications in intensive care nursing and business management. After having children, she moved into medical education at Bond University and also joined Hillcrest as a First Aid school nurse. Nicole remains deeply passionate about nursing and the many pathways it offers.

Kyle Naciker Associate Lawyer
Kyle Naicker is an Associate Lawyer, currently practising at Martello Law in Brisbane City. He holds a postgraduate diploma from Bond University, completed his law degree at both Griffith and Southern Cross University and holds a Diploma in Management from the Australian Institute of Learning, as well as currently completing his Masters degree in Theological Studies in his spare time. In his five years of working in the legal industry, Kyle has gained a range of experience in different practice areas, from commercial (business) law, migration law, succession law (wills and estates), conveyancing, personal injury and general litigation, in addition to his current professional indemnity and insurance experience. He is most experienced in personal injury, where he has worked for both plaintiff and defendants in order to achieve justice for those who deserve it, as it is that passion for advocacy that inspired him to become a lawyer.
Julie Easen
Head of Legal and Compliance
Julie Easen is Head of Legal & Compliance at the College. She started her legal career early, going straight out of school into a law firm, while studying law and economics. After practising as a solicitor in Sydney in civil litigation, Julie went travelling, relocating to London where she transitioned into Investment Banking. Julie worked for Goldman Sachs in their Equity Derivatives Middle Office before moving to the Legal & Compliance Department at UBS Investment Bank.Julie had a variety of roles within the UBS Legal & Compliance Department in London before being transferred to the Hong Kong office. Julie continued in Legal & Compliance, working closely with the CEO, COO's and Risk Departments across the Asia Pacific region. She then worked within the Reputational Risk Team in Compliance at Wells Fargo Bank.
Julie now combines her legal and compliance experience to support the College and is looking forward to sharing her experience with students considering a career in law. She is proof that studying law does not mean you just have to be a lawyer... that is one option of many!

Evans
Recent Hillcrest graduate, Bible College student
Shayla Evans graduated from Hillcrest in 2024 and was accepted into Summit International School of Ministry in Pennsylvania, a highly regarded Bible college in the United States connected with Times Square Church. During her first year, Shayla studied biblical theology while also taking part in weekly community outreaches, sharing her faith and supporting vulnerable and at-risk communities. She became actively involved in the life of the church, connecting with young adults, leading worship at Times Square Church, and participating in weekly worldwide prayer meetings broadcast internationally. Having completed her first year, Shayla plans to return to Summit for her second year, where she will serve as a Residential Advisor, part of the student leadership team, and continue as a worship leader. Her time at Bible college has been a deeply transformational experience, giving her a strong foundation for the future and growing her passion for ministry.
Larissa De Michiel Minister,
Author and Educator
Larissa De Michiel is an experienced educator, mentor and speaker with a passion for personal growth and wellbeing. She holds a Bachelor of Theology and postgraduate qualifications in Wellbeing and Pastoral Professional Supervision.
With 28 years in ministry, Larissa served as a pastor for 16 years at a large Sydney church (attended by then-sitting Prime Minister Scott Morrison), holding executive positions and leading departments including Young Adults, Connect, Foundations and Discipleship. She previously served as Worship Director and has been a board member for ACC National Bible College Alphacrucis.
Larissa has taught at Bible Colleges, is an Amazon bestselling author, and serves as an itinerant speaker. With over 20 years in the welfare industry, she is also the creator of the De-Activate Anxiety Program. Currently working at Hillcrest Christian College, Larissa brings a practical approach to helping young people build resilience and explore their purpose.
Josh Wood Minister, Preacher and Author
Josh Wood is an ordained Christian minister, preacher, teacher, and author based on the Gold Coast, Australia. With more than twenty years of ministry experience, he has devoted his life to helping people deepen their relationship with Jesus and live in the fullness of God’s promises. Having grown up in a strong Christian home and served faithfully in ministry from a young age, a life-changing encounter with Jesus in 2009 marked a significant turning point in both his life and calling. From that time forward, Josh began proclaiming the message of God’s Kingdom across multiple nations, seeing the Lord save, heal, deliver, and equip thousands of people through the grace and power of the Holy Spirit.

Disability Support Team Leaderist
With 19 years of experience across the UK and Australian disability sectors, Paul brings valuable insight into the realities and rewards of working in disability support. After beginning his career in engineering and CNC machine programming, he shifted into disability support, moving from a technical trade into a rewarding people-centred profession.
As a residential house Team Leader, Paul provides residential in-care support while overseeing staff, care planning, and daily operations. He is passionate about empowering individuals to live as independently as possible while promoting inclusion, dignity, and community participation. His experience offers practical insight into the skills, challenges, and opportunities involved in disability support work, along with the strong work-life balance the sector can provide. Paul can offer guidance on pathways into the profession, including entry requirements, training options, industry expectations, and what a career in disability support looks like in practice.
Duncan Hopkins Youth Justice Team Leader
With more than 20 years of experience working with young people, Duncan has built a career focused on supporting positive change, resilience, and long-term outcomes for those facing complex challenges. Originally working as a youth worker in the United Kingdom, Duncan developed a strong passion for adventure-based learning and experiential approaches that promote personal growth, confidence, and engagement.
Currently supporting young people involved in the justice system, including those transitioning from detention back into the community. Duncan’s particular interest lies in intensive, multi-systemic support and intervention, recognising that sustainable change is achieved through coordinated work with young people, families, schools, community organisations, and other key stakeholders. Duncan is committed to creating opportunities for young people to build on their strengths, overcome barriers, and achieve meaningful goals. Duncan’s practice is relationship-based, evidence-informed, and focused on supporting successful reintegration, wellbeing, and community connection.
Debbie Sabot
Clinical Psychologist
Deb is a Clinical Psychologist and Co-Director/Owner of Lakeside Rooms (Robina). In her private practice work, she provides psychological assessment and therapy to support children, adolescents, adults, and families. She works with a broad range of presentations, including anxiety, OCD, depression, ADHD, autism, grief, disordered eating, and complex trauma.
Deb uses a warm collaborative approach to help her clients build insight and develop their practical skills. She draws on a range of evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Schema Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR), which she tailors to individual client needs. She also has experience in cognitive, academic/learning, diagnostic, and personality assessment. She holds a GradDipPsych (Monash University), and a GradDipPsychScience and Master of Psychology (Clinical) from Bond University. She is a member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS), College of Clinical Psychologists and EMDRAA. Deb has also published research in the areas of sleep, trauma, and psychological well-being.

Matthew Lappin
AFL Player and Senior Coach
Matthew Lappin is a former AFL player who enjoyed a distinguished career across two clubs, playing 55 games with St Kilda and 196 games with Carlton. Known for his skill and versatility, he was Carlton’s leading goal kicker in 2001 and earned All Australian honours in 2004. Lappin also represented Australia in the International Rules Series in 2001, 2005 and 2006, and won the AFL Mark of the Year in 1999.
Since retiring from playing in 2007, Lappin has built an extensive coaching career at elite and community levels. He has held coaching roles with Collingwood, Carlton and the Gold Coast Suns, before working as an assistant coach with Southport Sharks in the NEAFL and VFL from 2018 to 2022. His recent roles include Head Coach of Surfers Paradise QAFL in 2023–2024, where he was named Coach of the Team of the Year, and he has now been appointed Senior Coach of the Southport Sharks QAFLW team.
He is passionate about the game and values the opportunity to support and develop the next generation of players at Hillcrest and within the wider football community.
Kelly Ransome Fitness Professional
Kelly is a fitness professional with over 20 years of experience in the Health and Wellness industry. Dedicating much of her life to helping others achieve their goals, her career has allowed her to transform many minds and bodies by creating lifestyle changes to improve health, decrease stress, and build confidence. Kelly has worked in gymnasiums, community centres, daycare centres, and health retreats, gaining experience working with people of all ages and walks of life.She has had to stay current with the ever-changing landscape of fitness. And as the industry evolved to focus on strength and mobility, more functional movements became popular, and has now adopted holistic yoga practises to assist others in living a longer, happier, healthier and more mobile life. She has had to adapt and embrace the advancements in exercise science and digital coaching to stay current and maintain longevity in the industry.

Tony Webeck is a journalist and author with more than 25 years of experience working within the sports media industry in Australia. A graduate of Charles Sturt University in Bathurst, Tony’s career began as a sports reporter with the Daily Liberal in Dubbo and has included time as the Assistant Editor of Australian Golf Digest, Editor of Big League magazine and Chief Queensland Correspondent for NRL.com.
Tony currently works as the Editorial Lead across both the PGA of Australia and Golf Australia and in 2024 served as the Media Liaison Officer with the Australian golf team at the Paris Olympic Games. A multi award-winning writer, Tony’s role also includes facilitating media requests, management of tournament media operations and delivery and management of content for GOLF.com.au.
