Gil Carter Golf Course Maintenance

Kirk Williams
We are quickly trying to finish up projects in several areas of the Country Club, including some sand trap work as well as new tee boxes, the bridge on #5, stonework on #11, and irrigation installation between 6 and 7. The greens are healthy and appear to be in the best shape I remember in 4 or 5 years. In addition, we will be doing the Dry Ject treatment in early April, that really helped the greens late last year. Our entire golf course maintenance crew (with Gil’s leadership), worked as a team trimming trees, moving dirt and working diligently to give our members the course that we knew and believed it could be. We had a surge of new members as we completed our winter discount, but we encourage every member to continue showing and bringing new members. As we increase membership it gives us funding for improvements in every area. Our pool will open in May and we are already ordering parts that we needed last year to complete the deferred maintenance that had happened for quite some time. A new heater will be added, new skimmers and work on the baby pool to improve the overall enjoyment of families. We are still trying to get the final courts turned into pickle ball courts before May, but it depends on the vendor’s schedule. Looking forward to a great Spring and Summer season, email me at any time with suggestions or comments to kwilliams@hillcrestcc.com

This month we will have our Wine Dinner, another Bingo Night and possibly a Comedy Club evening. Those events coupled with several tournaments should make April an enjoyable month to be part of and attend at Hillcrest. When possible bring a non-member to play golf, dine or come to one of our events. Our goal is to share the knowledge of the improvements here and where the club is headed into 2025.
Final note.. I wanted to share that Braden Daniels has joined our team as the accountant and member account finance manager. As many have expressed this was one area we needed improvement and if you’ve had the pleasure to work with Braden recently you will admit it’s the best thing we could do for this specific area of the business.

To all our male golfers. We have been doing as much as we can to keep the Men’s Locker Room clean and presentable for you all. We ask that if you see signs on the door indicating that cleaning is in progress, that you please use the restroom on the north end of the building adjacent to the dining room. This will give our cleaning staff adequate time and privacy to make sure your locker room is always clean and stocked with all necessities. With the weather improving and play increasing, you may notice several areas on the golf course that are roped off. We are asking all players to please keep your carts out of these areas. This will give Gil and his staff every opportunity to make sure our golf course is in the best possible condition for the 2025 season.
Lastly, I would like to remind everyone that tee times can be reserved no more than one week in advance. If you and your group are planning to play on a Saturday or Sunday morning. We recommend calling to reserve your tee time as early as possible. Please let me, Stephen, or Skyler know if you have any questions. Have a great month!
As always, please contact the golf shop if you have any questions about new equipment. (806)765-5208.

This month’s article deals with self talk and how many players are so negative and critical of their own play. Some display such a temper that they are constantly hitting their racket on the ground or actually throwing it. Others outwardly verbally abuse themselves and many just quietly demean their play throughout the match. Getting stuck in the “negative filtering trap” can be deadly. After a while the player is convinced that he is not good enough, consistent enough, fast enough, etc. This player beats himself up constantly.
To combat this trap, one needs to tune in to his thinking pattern. He needs to remind himself of the positive aspects of his game that day. There are always positives and one needs to acknowledge those as well. The negative players walks off the court with a loss and basically just feels like a loser. However, what is really happening is so much more. With every defeat, there are mini successes and things you learned that could propel you forward in your next match or even be a turning point in your career, if you see it that way. When you find yourself on the negative path, tune in to your thoughts and examine the evidence. If you are fair, you will likely find a few positive examples of your greatness.

Finally warmer days and night are here, although I am sure we will get our late April shot of cold. The course is starting to green up and look better. We are in the transition time where different grasses don't grow at the same rate. The cool season grass is starting to pop, especially around greens and a few fairways. We will do our best to make these areas as playable as possible until the Bermuda catches up, we will mow these areas a little lower or weed eat them to try to keep the clumps down as much as possible.
April 17th we will be doing the DryJect process on the greens, same as we did last July. We will be putting out fertilizer a couple weeks before to kick the growth rate up to help the greens recover quicker. This year we will be more aggressive on doing light top dressings and Verti cuts. Both of these processes will help fight disease and help firm up the greens as well as allow us to have smoother, faster greens. We will also be doing small tine aerifications to help the greens breath and allow the water to work its way deeper down. Interference in playability will be minimal during these times.
Bunkers are starting to slowly improve, right now we are tilling them once a week. Fairway bunkers are still a work in process but are getting much better. There have been several questions about all the sand that has blown out into the fairways, although it stands out right now, these spots will green up and look good. We basically top dressed the fairways with out actually doing it. We are dragging the sand in to help smooth these areas out.
In the next couple weeks, we will begin spiking fairways and tees and putting fertilizer down. We will also be putting Iron down on fairways and tees to help them green up.
In order to get everything watered we have to start front fairways at 7 PM, so beware that heads might be popping up while you are playing. Water programs run all night until about 9 AM.
