Creative Pathways: Life Skills, Purpose, and the Transformative Power of the Arts John Turpin, Ph.D., FIDEC Dean, David R Hayworth School of Arts and Design and Professor of Interior Design
Students often arrive at college not with a fixed destination, but with a desire to discover who they are and who they might become. They seek purpose, opportunities for identity exploration, and the personal growth that comes from stepping beyond the familiar. For those drawn to the creative arts, this journey becomes especially powerful. At High Point University’s David R. Hayworth School of Arts and Design, a degree in the arts is not simply an academic pursuit; it is a transformative experience that cultivates the life skills necessary to navigate both career and life with confidence and meaning. Within our thoughtfully structured studio culture, students are encouraged to ask questions, embrace ambiguity, take risks, and receive and apply feedback en route to discovering their individual voice. Whether studying studio art, graphic design, interior design, fashion merchandising, theater, dance, or music, students learn to think critically, communicate effectively, and approach problems with imagination and resilience. These habits are reinforced through HPU’s life skills framework, which emphasizes adaptability, collaboration, ethical leadership, and a strong work ethic anchored in a growth mindset. Together, these competencies extend far beyond the studio or stage; they shape how graduates engage with the world. What makes these life skills particularly valuable is their transferability. Graduates rarely follow a strictly linear career path. Instead, they move fluidly across roles and industries, applying the same core abilities—creative thinking, communication, and adaptability—to new environments and opportunities. In today’s workforce, where change is constant and career paths evolve, these qualities are essential for long-term success. An education in the arts or design equips students with a versatile skill set, empowering them to lead, innovate, and thrive regardless of where their journey takes them. Ultimately, a degree in any of our programs, grounded in High Point University’s life skills, equips students to lead lives of both achievement and purpose. The stories contained in this issue of In the Studio demonstrate how a student’s motivation plus an institution’s commitment to innovation and excellence can transform an initial search for identity into a lasting capacity for creativity, adaptability, and meaningful contribution—ensuring our students are prepared not just for their first job, but for a lifetime of impact.

Innovative Curriculum for Creative Growth
An educational journey designed to equip students with real life skills for future success All arts and design fields call for a high level of technical competence that will frequently be on public display. Strong technique is the foundation for future success in a myriad of careers that require art and design skills. The outstanding achievements of our students begin with expert instruction in fundamentals. Meticulous attention to detail, pattern, color, and geometry increases each student’s design ability by leaps and bounds.

Student actors and technicians prepare for Murder on the Orient Express.
The performing arts curriculum is also designed to build outstanding technical competence. In music, students rehearse their technique for hours each week under the direction of virtuoso musicians who encourage constant growth. Classes such as Aural Theory enhance a student’s ability in rhythm, chords, and harmonic progression. Theater students receive a thorough grounding in playscript analysis, theater production elements, and
theater history and theory. Dance students practice with rigor in diverse dance styles, with class sizes that allow one-on-one mentoring and coaching. The arts are uniquely positioned to develop coachability in young adults. Receiving constructive feedback for very personal work helps students develop a positive attitude toward outside input. They graduate with emotional intelligence and objectivity about their efforts, ready for mature teamwork.

Building Community One Note at a Time Many arts and design projects encourage students to apply their training and advanced skill sets to real world challenges. Creative Arts Fellow Finn Gilbert (MUS, 2026) deployed his research on the community-building power of drum circles in a memorable hands-on senior presentation. Gilbert welcomed acclaimed percussionist John Beck as a guest collaborator as the two musicians led an interactive drum circle workshop for students. Seeing how music can build community became an unforgettable lesson in how shared creative experience can improve a neighborhood or workplace.

Design Student Solutions for N
Annalise Cook And Emily Longo Interview, Pame From Grounded Design.
Graphic Design students worked on one of the most pressing real-world problems of our time as they created a new brand for affordable, sustainable housing. Seeking creative solutions for the housing crisis across America, a group of seniors created logo and brand options for a startup nonprofit known as Grounded Design. The winning design by Emily Longo will serve as the jumping-off point to develop a website and brand collateral for the nonprofit.

Designers Pitch to Developer Interior design students also applied their creative thinking directly to a real-world task related to their future careers. They reimagined an existing clubhouse and business center as a “bid spec,” including a pitch video and presentation. The detailed creative process and emphasis on professional presentation gave them invaluable experience for any business task requiring extensive planning and client-oriented thinking.

Dancers in Training
To thrive in the world beyond HPU’s walls, students will need a rock-solid work ethic. The dedicated students of the dance department demonstrated this perseverance all year long. With rigorous preparation for each semester’s concert, they developed personal grit and stamina as well as the camaraderie and teamwork that fueled their collective effort. Motivation is crucial for students to realize their full potential in their chosen field of study. We saw the exemplary results of strong motivation when our arts and design students presented 36 research projects at the annual HPU Research and Creativity Symposium. Impressive research presentations came from students in interior design, fashion merchandising, music, and dance. All participants demonstrated well-honed critical thinking skills, and Catherine Gallagher of the dance department won awards for best digital poster presentation and best digital performance. With live performances from 15 vocal soloists and the innovative Percussion Ensemble, the symposium showcased many kinds of motivation that spring from the study of arts and design.

ACIL Design Competition Interior design students navigated uncharted territory as they worked on an 8-week project that ended in full scale prototyping using the Anderson Creative Innovation Lab. When initial designs did not come to fruition, alternative solutions had to be explored. This iterative process is the very essence of critical thinking and growth mindset. At the end of the process each team presented their work to a panel of interior designers, architects, and furniture designers for a chance at scholarships.

Ceramics I students Colt Marion (HST, 2026), Daniel Pitt (GDS, 2027) and Yaritzi Zermeno (ART, 2028) had work accepted into the Think Big exhibit Exploring Eloquence: Connecting Emotions and the Environments We Navigate. Colt’s kurinuki cups were designed for left-handed use in recognition of those who “find themselves struggling with handheld items meant for a right-handed world.” Daniel’s kurinuki cups, Siblings, Not Twins, explores “organic form, human individuality and interconnection.” Yaritzi’s doll depicting Chicano culture through Baile Folklorico dress, clown makeup and other symbols, expresses emotions of sadness, vulnerability, pride and awe connected to the contemporary Latino experience.

We see those bonds at events like the Fresh Picked music concert, which brings students together to perform their original works in instrumental or vocal music often with the assistance of their peers who practiced for hours to perfect the performance. In addition to the extraordinary

Interior design students got an early start on building business relationships when they attended the High Point Furniture Market in the fall. One of the world’s top home furnishings trade shows, the Furniture Market provides networking opportunities and practice for developing relational and communication skills. The immersive, hands-on experience gives students an insider’s look at sales, marketing, and design. The relationships started at Furniture Market often open pathways to future internships and other professional opportunities.

COLLABORATIVE COMMONS DESIGN EMILY HELLBERG, ANNELIESE FULLERTON, SKY HENDRICK RENDERED FLOOR PLAN Our Collaborative Commons design is deeply rooted in the regional identity of Hebron, Kentucky, utilizing reclaimed wood and natural textures to bridge the gap between local vernacular and the surrounding industrial landscape. While the space is primarily dedicated to education and learning, it remains a vital hub for community and gathering. Through largescale glazing that frames city views and the integration of local artwork, the design emphasizes connectivity and movement, ensuring that intellectual growth stays grounded in the spirit of the local community. This final interior design project focuses on creating a thoughtfully designed apartment complex clubhouse that serves as a central hub for community life. The space is intended to support residents by providing areas to meet, gather, and engage in shared experiences, fostering a strong sense of connection. A key feature of the design is the inclusion of a dedicated High Point University education center, offering residents a place to study, learn, and invest in their personal growth. By blending social and educational functions, the clubhouse becomes a dynamic environment that enhances both community interaction and individual development.

DESIGN CONCEPT
Our design concept aims to create a warm, welcoming, and peaceful sanctuary, an inviting place where community members can truly unwind and reconnect. The carefully chosen color palette plays a vital role in achieving this atmosphere; deep, rich browns and soft, natural beiges wrap the space in a comforting embrace, instantly making everyone feel welcome and at ease. These grounding earthy tones are beautifully complemented by touches of gentle blue, added specifically for their known soothing properties, further enhancing the tranquil and restorative nature of the entire experience.

Music students build their own remarkable variety of resilience. Seniors practice not only for their private lessons and ensemble practices, but also their individual Senior Recitals. This year, 18 polished senior recitals and capstones in music gave impressive testimony to the high level of discipline and persistence gained over the years by the music students at HPU.
The Department of Music provided the space for me to grow, refine my musicianship, strengthen my weaknesses, and continually push myself to finish the work—even in moments of doubt.

Faculty and Advisors Who Guide Transformation
Advising and Mentorship for a Bright Future
HPU offers its students a strong, multi-faceted support system. First-year students benefit from the assistance of a Success Coach. These coaches, like Hilah Cook, provide transitional support to firstyear students in any aspect of the student’s life: academic, personal, or social. Success coaches serve as guides for the early college experience. In the second year, every student moves on to a Faculty Advisor who will guide them for the rest of their undergraduate studies. From sophomore year through senior year, the same faculty member will meet regularly with each advisee and serve as a mentor. Faculty advisors get to know each student well enough to provide expert help with choices in education and career. Hilah Cook Success Coach for the School of Arts and Design
Every student also has access to personalized career development support from our Career Advisor, Samantha Gates Reese. These advisors empower students to translate their experiential learning to the professional world for internships and job placement. Advisors can help with career planning and exploration, resume and LinkedIn development, interview preparation, and portfolio creation.

WORK ETHIC TURNS INTO PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION
,,
Kayla Turner joined Stantec’s Boston office after graduating from HPU’s Interior Design program (2025). Within six months she was named Employee of the Month, recognition built not only on talent, but on her well-honed work ethic. “The pace of studio taught me how to manage my time, prioritize competing tasks, and stay organized,” Turner says of the late nights and deadlines that shaped her HPU years. That discipline now shows up in her work across multiple project phases, her involvement with IIDA New England and ICFF, and her volunteer efforts with the Boys & Girls Club of Boston and Hasbro Children’s Hospital.
High Point’s interior design program prepared me for my career through its studio structure. Those late nights spent meeting project deadlines quickly turned into real-world deadlines. The pace of studio taught me how to manage my time, prioritize competing tasks, and stay organized—skills I use every day.

Madelyn Mudd, a 2024 graduate, combined her studies in Theater with a second major in Strategic Communication. She now serves as Marketing Coordinator at the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts in Greensboro. HPU’s company-based theater model prepared her to see performance from every angle: the stage, the audience, the institution, and the marketplace. That range has carried her from campus productions into arts marketing, and this year it took her to the 78th Annual Tony Awards, where she represented the Tanger Center and connected with Broadway marketing professionals. Mudd’s story shows how adaptability to moving between roles, on stage and off, can open doors across an industry. Madelyn Mudd (THE and COM, 2024)

FIGLIOZZI TURNS
CREATIVE STRATEGY INTO CAREER SUCCESS
Gina Figliozzi (Studio Art, 2019) is Manager of Retail Brand Commercialization for The Walt Disney Company, where she helps shape strategy for the 20th Century portfolio. Her recent work included presenting brand strategy to more than 800 partners, an assignment that demanded she translate complex creative direction into a message every stakeholder in the room could get behind. That kind of clarity pays off: Figliozzi’s team won the Tentpole Program of the Year award for their Fantastic Four launch event. Her path from HPU classroom to Disney boardroom shows how a persuasive argument, clearly delivered, can build a stellar career.

My professors were extremely supportive, caring and knowledgeable about their craft, and always pushed me to go a step beyond what I thought I was capable of. My Art and Design classes helped me develop not only technical skills, but tactical creative problem solving skills, which have all been extremely applicable in my roles at The Walt Disney Company.

McCann Named a 2026 Fragrance Foundation Notable Samantha McCann (Visual Merchandising Design, 2018), Senior Manager of Digital Media at NEST New York, was named a Fragrance Foundation 2026 Notable, an honor recognizing emerging leaders in the fragrance industry. Her success rests on a skill our students build early: turning creative communication into lasting professional relationships. McCann’s outstanding ability to connect with both the public and her industry peers made her a natural choice to be an ambassador of the fragrance community.

Michaela Mucha (Graphic Design, 2018), Senior Manager and Associate Creative Director for Global Disney+ Brand and Bundle, helped turn an unlikely idea into an award-winning campaign for the Hulu on Disney+ launch. Letting Hulu’s irreverent characters interrupt classic Disney quotes involved a creative risk, like many of the best marketing campaigns. The campaign went on to win a Gold Clio and three Silver GEMA awards. Mucha’s success shows the resilience that equips a branding expert to keep championing innovative ideas throughout a long, arduous creative process. Michela Mucha (GDS, 2018)

Jonica Watrous (2016, Music and Strategic Communication) has been promoted to Vice President of Event Partnerships at iHeartMedia, capping a decade-long climb that began as a Sales Assistant in the Brand Integration Group. At each stage, Watrous built the marketing expertise that now informs campaigns for Fortune 500 clients. She was also a founding member of the company’s flagship Innovation Lab. She credits her passion for live music as the motivation behind her extraordinary career. This strong creative drive, nurtured by her artistic education, has been the key to her business success.
,,
From Creative Passion to Event Partnership Leadership In my career, I’ve often thought back to Dr. Marc Foster’s words: ‘I believe in the power of music to change lives,’ and how he taught us to love the process of creating music. That sentiment has always centered me. HPU gave me a strong foundation in life skills beyond the classroom and showed me that a career in the music industry was possible.
