The 4-Door Coupe is based on the new high performance AMG.EA architecture and underscores AMG's pioneering spirit with numerous world-first innovations. Central to this is a newly developed drive concept designed for high performance, which is used in a series-production electric vehicle for the first time. It utilizes a new, highly innovative electric motor technology – axial flux motors – combined with a high performance battery. The drive concept delivers impressive peak power and can also be called upon repeatedly and continuously, thereby shifting the benchmark in the high performance segment.

Mercedes-AMG demonstrated the capability of this technology last year with the spectacular record drive of the CONCEPT AMG GT XX in Nardò. The technology pioneer sprinted 24,901 miles in seven days and 13 hours –literally driving “around the world in eight days” – and set a total of 25 long-distance records in the process.

The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe arrives at U.S. dealerships later in 2026 starting with the Mercedes-AMG GT 55 4-Door Coupe, followed by the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4-Door Coupe in early 2027.

Outstanding performance and continuous power thanks to the revolutionary drive concept

Mercedes-AMG continues its tradition of high performance drivetrains and ushers in a new level of performance in the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. At its core are revolutionary axial flux motors and a completely new battery technology. Both models are equipped with three axial flux motors and deliver an output ranging

from 805 hp to 1,153 hp. The newly developed battery concept uses directly cooled cylindrical cells with a special cell chemistry that ensures uniform temperature distribution and high performance stability under continuous load.

Impressive power: Up to 1,153 hp

The basic principle of the axial flux motor was developed by the British electric motor specialist YASA, which has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz AG since July 2021. The compact motor design allows greater flexibility in packaging the drivetrain. Compared with conventional electric motors, this innovative drive delivers exceptional continuous power and higher torque. This also allows the demanding driving performance to be reproduced very frequently in succession.

How it works: In an axial flux motor, the electromagnetic flux runs parallel to the motor’s axis of rotation. In a conventional electric motor, it runs perpendicular to the axis. Key components of the axial flux motor are designed as thin discs: two rotors enclose the stator like a sandwich on the left and right. This arrangement – also known as an H-configuration – allows optimal coupling of the magnetic flux generated by the stator to the rotors. In the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, this combination at the front axle is approximately 3.5 inches wide; each of the two motors at the rear axle are approximately 3.2 inches wide.

All three of these innovative electric motors together deliver exceptional overall performance in the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. In the AMG GT 63 4-Door Coupe, peak output reaches 1,153 hp (peak performance during AMG Launch Control at 80 percent SoC). In the AMG GT 55 4-Door Coupe, the axial flux motors deliver 805 hp. The High Performance Electric Architecture is designed for even higher outputs of over 1,300 hp.

The motors are integrated into a High Performance Electric Drive Unit (HP.EDU) on each axle. At the rear axle, the HP.EDU contains two axial flux motors, which are combined together with a compact single-stage planetary gearbox in a shared housing. The motors and gearboxes are oil cooled. The required Pump Control Unit, including hydraulic pumps and suction filters, is also integrated into the HP.EDU to save space. In addition, two water-cooled silicon carbide (SiC) inverters (one per motor) are used. The material properties of silicon

carbide offer numerous benefits for demanding applications that require high voltages, high currents, high temperatures and excellent thermal conductivity. The axial flux motors reach more than 13,000 rpm at top speed.

The front HP.EDU comprises one axial flux motor, a spur gear transmission with integrated parking lock, a liquid-cooled silicon carbide (SiC) inverter and a Pump Control Unit. The front axial flux motor reaches more than 15,000 rpm at top speed. The front electric drive acts as a “booster motor,” activated only when additional power or traction is required on the front axle. During steady state driving, coasting or under low load, the Disconnect Unit (DCU) decouples the front electric motor within milliseconds to maximize efficiency. During acceleration and recuperation, the DCU engages for optimal performance.

The high-voltage battery of the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is a completely new development and the result of concentrated expertise. It combines experience from the Mercedes-AMG ONE hypercar, the uncompromising performance philosophy of Formula 1® and the extensive knowledge of Mercedes-AMG’s top engineers in Affalterbach, together with Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) in Brixworth, England. This “AMG High Performance Electric Battery” (AMG HP.EB) is the key to the vehicle’s outstanding overall performance. It enables high output and performance that can be called upon repeatedly, combined with impressively fast charging and a high power density. The battery concept is designed to potentially enable WLTP ranges of well over 435 miles in the future.

Three key aspects contribute significantly to this outstanding performance capability: newly developed battery cells, an innovative direct cooling system for each individual cell and a comparatively high voltage.

Newly developed battery cell for the highest performance requirements

The high-voltage battery in the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is the result of a groundbreaking new development designed specifically for maximum performance. At the heart of this innovation is a battery cell with a distinctive shape: cylindrical, tall and slim. The cells are 4.1 inches high and 1 inch in diameter. This

unique format provides crucial advantages for cooling. The small diameter of the round cell minimizes the distance from the cell core to the surface. This enables rapid and efficient dissipation of heat generated under load, ensuring that each individual round cell is always maintained within its optimal temperature range. This is essential for consistent power delivery and battery longevity, even under extreme conditions.

The innovations in the high-voltage battery of the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe go even further: the laser-welded aluminum cell housing is also a new development. It is significantly lighter than conventional “steel cans” and also offers outstanding electrical and thermal conductivity. These properties enable more precise and effective cell temperature control, allowing the cell to cool down or warm up more quickly as needed. Another highlight is the full-tab design of the cells. Here, the cell windings are connected electrically and thermally across the entire surface of the poles. The result is a significant reduction in internal resistance, enabling extremely high charging and discharging performance. In addition, these full-tab battery cells are extremely robust and remain reliable even under extreme loads.

In the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, a specially developed cell chemistry is used. It is based on NCMA (Nickel/Cobalt/Manganese/Aluminum) in the cathode and a silicon-containing anode. It also offers a previously unique combination of high energy density – over 298 Wh/kg or 732 Wh/l at cell level – together with strong charging performance and long service life.

Overall, the combination of the tall and slim format, aluminum housing, full-tab technology and NCMA chemistry provides the foundation for maximum performance, particularly in terms of continuous power capability, in each individual battery cell.

Our latest outing with the Land Rover Defender 130 X marks our third experience with the L663 generation Defender on Highline Drives, and it continues to impress with its seamless blend of rugged capability and everyday refinement. Few SUVs manage to feel equally suited for remote weekend escapes and weekday school runs, yet the Defender 130 X delivers on both. Building on the strengths of the platform, this iteration adds meaningful practicality, offering increased passenger space without sacrificing its core character.

Finished in Borasco Grey with contrasting black exterior accents and riding on 22-inch Style 7030 dark grey wheels, our example emphasizes the bold, upright design language of the L663 generation. As mentioned before in previous reviews, Land Rover struck a perfect balance between retro styling and modern luxury with this generation. Not as striking as the Sedona Red featured on our last 110, the Borasco Gray is a very modern color that complements the extended black exterior trim well. The extended proportions of the 130 avoid any sense of awkwardness, and the subtle increase in rear overhang integrates cleanly into the Defender’s design. The 130 is a testament to the original design execution that so little needed to change.

Under the hood, the Defender 130 X carries over the familiar 3.0 liter mild-hybrid inline-six, paired with all wheel drive, a twin-speed transfer case, terrain response, hill descent control, and height-adjustable air suspension. The Defender remains as versatile as ever across a wide range of driving conditions. For 2026, the addition of Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control brings a new layer of confidence in challenging environments, automatically managing throttle inputs over uneven terrain. Initial acceleration feels slightly more aggressive than before, possibly due to revised throttle mapping to compensate for the added size and weight of the 130. Most owners will probably never push it to its limits, but Land Rover owners love the reassurance in knowing their vehicles possess genuine off-road credentials.

Practicality remains a key strength of the Defender 130, with multiple configurations available to suit different needs. The standard layout provides slightly limited cargo capacity, even with the third row folded. Those prioritizing storage over seating can opt for the Outbound trim, replacing third row seating for an expanded cargo space. This flexibility enhances the Defender’s appeal as both a family hauler or utility vehicle.

Ultimately, the Defender 130 X reinforces its position as more than just a capable SUV. A complete, thoughtfully engineered lifestyle vehicle. Where many three row competitors lean too far toward comfort at the expense of capability, the Defender maintains a careful balance of both. Its extended wheelbase not only improves interior space but also contributes to a more composed and stable ride on longer journeys, adding a subtle grand touring quality to its rugged nature. 40 Years of the First Super SUV in History

Forty years have passed since Lamborghini unveiled the LM002 at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1986, a vehicle destined to redefine the very concept of the high-performance off-roader. More than an extreme machine, the LM002 was a bold statement of intent, combining the DNA of Sant’Agata Bolognese super sports cars with unprecedented off-road capability.

The origins of the LM002 trace back to the experimental Cheetah and LM001 projects developed between the late 1970s and early 1980s, leading to the decisive technical insight of Giulio Alfieri: the repositioning of Lamborghini’s legendary V12 engine to the front for greater balance and control across the most challenging terrain. Following years of extreme testing in the deserts of Saudi Arabia, the definitive LM002 was born.

Powered by the Countach Quattrovalvole V12, equipped with specially developed Pirelli Scorpion BK tires and engineered to tackle sand, rocks and steep gradients, the LM002 was capable of exceeding 124 mph, an extraordinary achievement for an off-road vehicle of its era. Produced until 1992 in just 300 examples, plus a unique right hand drive example now displayed at the Lamborghini Museum in Sant'Agata Bolognese, the LM002 is now regarded as the true predecessor of the modern Lamborghini Super SUV concept and the technical and philosophical foundation that would eventually lead to the birth of the Urus.

Today, the LM002 continues to be preserved and enhanced by Lamborghini Polo Storico through projects dedicated to maintaining its technical authenticity, including the collaboration with Pirelli that recently brought the historic Scorpion BK tires, originally developed specifically for this model, back into production. These tires are once again available to Lamborghini customers through the brand's official dealer network and the Pirelli Collezione catalogue.

The LM002 is one of the permanent highlights of the Lamborghini Museum in Sant’Agata Bolognese, where from 9 June a dedicated installation marks the 40th anniversary of Lamborghini’s first Super SUV.

Lamborghini Cheetah – the genesis of the project

Automobili Lamborghini’s entry into the world of high-performance off-road vehicles began with a pioneering vision that challenged automotive conventions at the 1977 Geneva Motor Show. On that occasion, the Sant’Agata Bolognese manufacturer unveiled the Cheetah, an all-wheel-drive prototype that marked a radical stylistic and technical departure from the grand touring sports cars the company had produced until then.

Developed in collaboration with the American company Mobility Technology International (MTI), the project was originally conceived to meet tactical and military mobility requirements, with the ambition of attracting interest from both the United States armed forces and Middle Eastern markets. Technically, the Cheetah featured a tubular steel chassis combined with an open aluminum body structure incorporating inspection hatches, exposed tubular elements and an open cockpit.

The powertrain adopted an unusual rear-mid-engine layout for a four-wheel-drive vehicle of this kind. At its heart was a 5.9-liter Chrysler V8 producing 183 hp at 4,000 rpm and 267 lb-ft of torque at 2,500 rpm. The engine was paired with a three-speed Chrysler A727 automatic transmission and permanent all-wheel drive.

The suspension setup featured double wishbones, coil springs and an anti-roll bar at the front, while the rear adopted a similar architecture enhanced by an adjustable torsion bar. The braking system used ventilated front disc brakes shared with the contemporary Lamborghini Countach.

The Cheetah was capable of tackling gradients ranging from 60% to 85%, while reaching a top speed of 103.7 mph on road and approximately 86.9 mph on sand. Acceleration from 0 to 62 mph took just nine seconds, despite a declared dry weight of around 4,501.8 lbs.

Although production never progressed beyond a single prototype, the Cheetah became a crucial experimental platform for Lamborghini. The boldness of this first project established the technological path that would later define the brand’s approach to high-performance SUVs, demonstrating Sant’Agata Bolognese’s determination to push beyond conventional limits on every type of terrain.

From LM001 to LM002 (passing by LM003 and LM004) – the development

The LM001 (Lamborghini Militare 1) marked the second crucial chapter in the evolution of Lamborghini’s off-road vehicles, representing the transition from the experimental nature of the Cheetah to a more ambitious and structured engineering vision.

Presented at the 1981 Geneva Motor Show, the LM001 was the first tangible result of the Mimran era, during which Lamborghini sought to diversify its production by exploring both the luxury off-road and tactical vehicle segments. Under the technical direction of engineer Giulio Alfieri, the project was designed to appeal not only to civilian enthusiasts, but also to governmental and military markets, particularly in the Middle East.

Unlike the Cheetah, the LM001 adopted a closed four-door body with angular lines, conceived to facilitate the possible integration of armored protection. The project’s defining innovation was the adoption of Lamborghini’s legendary Countach V12 engine: the 4.8-liter powerplant from the LP500 S producing 327 hp at 6,000 rpm, although the first and only prototype initially experimented with a 5.9-liter AMC-derived V8.

The vehicle featured permanent four-wheel drive combined with a three-speed Chrysler A-727 automatic transmission, with torque distribution heavily biased toward the rear axle. Measuring 15 feet 8.58 inches in length and 6 feet 6.74 inches in width, the LM001 offered an impressive ground clearance of 1ft 4.73 inches in its central section. Despite a curb weight ranging between approximately 4,629.7 and 5,291 lbs, the vehicle was capable of 111.8 mph and accelerating from 0 to 62 mph around 12 seconds.

However, desert testing soon revealed a major structural limitation: the rear-mounted engine layout. Under heavy acceleration and steep climbs, the front axle became excessively light — further complicated by the absence of power steering — and negatively affecting steering precision and directional stability.

Although it never progressed beyond the prototype stage, the LM001 became a fundamental technical laboratory for Lamborghini. The vehicle introduced advanced suspension solutions for extreme terrain, including independent suspension with wishbones, torsion bars and telescopic dampers. The challenges encountered in weight distribution, vehicle dynamics and engine cooling ultimately pushed Lamborghini engineers toward a complete rethinking of the architecture. This led directly to the development of the LMA (Lamborghini Militare Anteriore), where the engine was finally relocated to the front, laying the foundations for the future production LM002.

To overcome the limitations of the LM001, Giulio Alfieri and his team completely redesigned the vehicle architecture. The new front-engine layout not only improved weight distribution, but also introduced a more balanced threebox design.

The LMA represented far more than a simple repositioning of the powertrain. It combined motorsport-derived engineering solutions with heavy-duty off-road capability. The Countach-derived 4.8-liter V12 producing 327 hp was retained, while the previous Chrysler automatic transmission was replaced by a more robust five-speed ZF manual gearbox equipped with low-range gearing. Unlike the permanent four-wheel-drive systems of earlier prototypes, the LMA also allowed the driver to disengage the front axle and operate the vehicle in rear-wheel-drive mode.

Presented at the 1982 Geneva Motor Show, the LMA appeared as a true engineering laboratory on wheels. The vehicle grew to nearly 16 feet 0.91 inches in length and reached a total weight of approximately 5,732 lbs, reflecting its significantly evolved architecture.

Testing was pushed to extremes in the deserts of Saudi Arabia, where the vehicle proved capable of climbing gradients of up to 120% and reaching speeds close to 118 mph. These results confirmed the validity of the new technical configuration, transforming the LMA into the definitive foundation upon which the legendary LM002 would be developed and launched in 1986.

Alongside this development path, Lamborghini also explored alternative technical solutions. The LM003 represented the only chapter in the original “Lamborghini Militare” program dedicated to diesel experimentation. Developed in 1983, the prototype was conceived to evaluate the feasibility of a high-performance off-roader offering greater efficiency and usability compared with the powerful but fuel-hungry V12 petrol engines.

For this project, Lamborghini turned to Italian specialist VM Motori, equipping the LM003 with a five-cylinder turbo-diesel engine producing 148 hp. Despite the theoretical appeal of a diesel-powered variant, testing quickly demonstrated that the available power was insufficient for a vehicle approaching three tons in weight, and the project never evolved beyond the prototype stage.

In 1985, Lamborghini introduced the LM004, an even more extreme experimental concept fitted with a marine-derived engine. The project represented an attempt to push the technical limits of the LM range even further by exploring powertrain solutions inspired by offshore racing.

At the heart of the LM004 was the Lamborghini L804, the competition version of the brand’s V12 engine developed for offshore powerboats. Producing more than 414 hp and 434 lb-ft of torque at just 2,000 rpm, the massive sevenliter engine required a lengthened chassis compared with the later production LM002.

Despite its extraordinary performance potential, the LM004 project was eventually abandoned. The excessive weight of the marine engine and concerns regarding reliability made it less effective overall than the 5.2-liter V12 ultimately selected for the production LM002.

Bentley Opens its Crewe Visitor Centre to the Public With Hosted Tours

Bentley Motors is now welcoming members of the public to its visitor experience centre, CW1 House, located next to the factory in Crewe where it’s free for everyone to sit in a Bentley. The front-of-house area, with its constantly-changing display of modern and recent heritage Bentleys, is open in business hours for anyone to access which also includes the Bentley Boutique where it’s possible to purchase items from the merchandise range. In addition, Bentley is now offering paid-for guided tours, facilitated by one of its trained customer hosts, of not just CW1 House but also the adjacent Lineage area which includes some of the most important cars in Bentley’s Heritage Collection dating from before 1945 and rarely seen in public.

Previously available only to Bentley customers, the new bookable experiences provide access for anyone to the Home of Bentley, offering enthusiasts the opportunity to immerse themselves in the brand’s heritage, craftsmanship and design innovation. After a barista coffee, an expert Bentley host guides groups of up to 12 around CW1 House providing detailed explanations of the many cars on display but also artefacts from Bentley’s history including trophies from its motorsport past.

The guided tour continues into Lineage, Bentley’s heritage exhibition, where guests are guided through a digitally immersive journey explaining the start of Bentley’s journey from 1919. The experience showcases a rotating display of famous heritage cars from Bentley’s history which compliments those of the modern era displayed in CW1 House. Here, every model from the range is represented and, depending on the day, possibly rare examples of coachbuilt Bentleys from Mulliner and the new Supersports, too.

The investment into CW1 House is just a small part of the significant development of Bentley’s historic home in Crewe. Customers have long been able to visit and returning visitors will notice the wide range of changes including new buildings onsite like the paintshop as well as The Mews, a private customer facility located near to the factory.

Although currently members of the public cannot access the main site, this is planned for the next phase of opening up Bentley in Crewe to the world.
