After listening to the community’s interests and needs, senior center staff are excited to introduce expanded programming hours to evenings and Saturday mornings.

If you are working or have other commitments during the day, you can participate in programs during our new expanded hours:

• Tuesday and Thursday evenings until 8 p.m.

• Saturday mornings from 8:30 a.m.-noon

Disco Fever Senior PROM PROM

Turn back the clock and sparkle under the disco ball! Dance to a DJ, enjoy a delicious dinner with wine and celebrate with friends, or come solo and make new ones. This disco-themed senior prom is the perfect night to shine, laugh and groove the night away.

Senior center welcomes new Health & Resource Coordinator

Corrin Godar will be joining the Highlands Ranch Senior Center team on March 2. Corrin brings extensive experience in healthy living and healthcare, with a passion for evidencebased programs and connecting people to social activities and community resources. She enjoys building relationships, sharing stories and lifelong learning. In her free time, Corrin enjoys hiking, making art, writing, gardening, trying new foods, dogsitting and spending time with her family. Welcome Corrin!

Lyndsey George, guest services and volunteer coordinator, and Cindy Galligan, front desk & membership clerk, were recently recognized at the Metro District’s Outstanding Achievement Awards ceremony for their outstanding customer service. They were selected from among all Metro District employees for this honor.

To cancel a free class, go to My Activities in MyActiveCenter and click remove beside the class. For paid classes, please call 303-791-2416 or email seniorcenterinfo@highlandsranch.org. Not only will canceling free up a space for another person, it will also allow the presenter to bring the appropriate number of handouts, snacks and other items. In a recent class, 17 people were registered, but only six showed up. Please help us make it worth a presenter’s time to continue to speak at the senior center by cancel if your plans change and you are unable to attend.

Shuttle available

It will be easier to get to the front door of the senior center from the overflow parking area on the center’s busiest days. On luncheon Wednesdays and for larger events including craft fairs and Older Adult Health and Resource Expos, the Aging Resources of Douglas County van will be available to shuttle people to and from the church parking lot.

This beginner friendly class is designed for adults who want to feel more comfortable and confident using their iPhone. You’ll learn basic phone functions, how to make calls and send messages, take and enjoy photos, adjust settings for easier viewing and hearing and use everyday apps. Instruction is clear, patient, and hands-on with no technical jargon and no rushing. Bring your own iPhone and follow along as we practice together. By the end of class, you’ll feel more independent and confident using your iPhone in everyday life.

Senior Academy Series: DCSO Class #3

TUESDAY, MARCH 10

This four-part academy series will introduce you to the many facets of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, including patrol, SWAT, detentions, Special Operations Response Team, Bomb Team and Crime Scene Investigation. All four classes (Jan. 13, Feb. 10, March 10 and April 14 ) must be attended to receive a certificate of completion.

Hearing Clinic

During your one-on-one visit with Dr. Dusty Jessen and/or Dr. Joe Kraus, you will receive a video otoscopy (ear canal check), inspection, cleaning and replacement of parts on current hearing aids. This also includes a basic hearing screening if you do not have hearing aids and have never had a hearing test.

Stepping On: A Fall Prevention Series

THURSDAYS, MARCH 19, 26, APRIL 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30

This seven-week evidence-based program is proven to reduce falls. It covers a range of issues, including fall risk, strength and balance exercises, home hazards, safe footwear, vision and falls, safety in public places, community mobility, coping after a fall and understanding how to initiate a medication review. We ask that you commit to attending all seven sessions. Space is limited to 15.

Phantom of the Opera Trip

Join us for a matinee performance of Phantom of the Opera at the Buell Theater in Denver. This musical is considered one of the most beautiful and spectacular productions in history. The trip is full, however a waitlist is available.

Mental Health First Aid Training

MONDAY, MARCH 23 & TUESDAY, MARCH 24

Become a certified Mental Health First Aider to help older adults. This is an eight-hour, in-person class, split over two mornings. Improve quality of life and learn how to assist and support older adults who may be experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge by getting certified in an evidencebased, early-intervention training program. Older adults have high rates of late-onset mental health challenges and low rates of identification and treatment. Whether you need to assist today or years from now, this certification gives you confidence to have conversations that enable older adults to live as comfortably as possible.

Bunny & Egg Spring Decor Workshop

Celebrate spring with this mixed-media décor class. Participants will create a bunny and egg set perfect for Easter or seasonal decorating. The class begins with decoupaging the egg using spring-themed paper and techniques for a smooth finish. Participants will then paint the bunny in soft, rustic tones and add embellishments such as beads and twine. All supplies will be provided.

The Aging Hip: Common Conditions and Strategies

Coping with Life’s Challenges and Adversities

This four-hour class examines The NeverEnding Story as a metaphor for life. Through Bastian’s journey, participants explore grief, self-doubt, bullying and the search for meaning and inner strength. The class follows Atreyu’s quest to save Fantasia from the Nothing, revealing that Bastian — and the viewer — has always been part of the story. Participants reflect on personal challenges and discover the inner resources they have to face adversity.

For centuries, we’ve known that the health of the brain and the body are connected. But now, science is able to provide insights into how to optimize our physical and cognitive health as we age. Learn about research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement and use hands-on tools to help you incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging.

Matching donation for volunteering

Does your former employer reward your volunteering? Mary Beth and Michael Watkins’ former employer donated $900 to the Friends of the Highlands Ranch Senior Center to recognize the almost 400 volunteer hours that Mary Beth and Michael worked at the center’s front desk last year.

Quilt raffle

The Friends of the Highlands Ranch Senior Center is raffling off a beautiful quilt handmade and donated by senior center member Chris Weiss. Raffle tickets are $5. The drawing will be Wednesday, March 11 at the Friends’ monthly luncheon. Purchase raffle tickets in the lobby of the senior center or from any Friends board member.

Douglas County parking lot

Please do not park in Douglas County Human Service’s lot on the west side of the building. Please use the overflow parking at the church if needed. Shuttles will be provided during large events.

Did you know you can apply for Douglas County Human Services benefits in the senior center building? At the offices on the west side of the buiding, you can apply for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), Old Age Pension (OAP), Aid to the Needy Disabled (AND), Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) and other programs and services. Brown Palace & Western Art Museum Tours

TUESDAY, APRIL 7

Join us for a guided tour of Denver’s most iconic hotel, the Brown Palace. After the tour, we’ll have lunch at the Ship Tavern (lunch not included in the fee). Then we will cross the street to tour the American Museum of Western Art-The Anschutz Collection, home to more than 300 paintings by more than 180 artists from the early 19th century to present day. Fee includes transportation by motor coach, tickets to both tours and trip leader.

Coors Brewery Tour and Lunch in Golden

The Coors Brewery Tour showcases the largest single-site brewery in the world. The 60-minute tour includes three beer samples (non-alcoholic beverages also are available). This trip involves walking up and down stairs. After the tour, enjoy lunch on your own in Golden. A group lunch reservation has been made at Table Mountain Grill & Cantina, but you are free to choose your own restaurant. Also enjoy shopping and strolling the main street.
