Ind ependen ce for people with disabiliti es is seldom absolute, but is a matt er of degree. And every seep coward that independ ence, no matter how small, is a source of pride and achievement . Hat s off co you!. .. chose typical salutat ions celebrating grad uation ceremonies have a deeper meaning for And rew Keefe, a Hi gh Hopes ride r for the past r4 years. Andrew, whose jou rn ey began as a young child with cerebral palsy working with a Physical Therapist and a team of high ly trained volunt eers, has become a young adult canter ing coward independence! Andrew 's grad uation from Ston ington High School chis past year marks a milestone, as does his "graduat ion" if you will from Hi gh Hopes. Over the past 14 years Andrew's dreams have become ours. Andrew's hopes and aspirations have been shared with his instructors and volunteers and often his horse . Watching Andrew's riding skills develop and change; trott ing for the first time, learning co steer, being able co pose down the long side of che arena , riding off lead in the ring and the n the uail, and finally canter ing, have mirrored his jo urn ey co adulth ood . H earing of woes in school, writing letters of recommendation for college, sharing academ ic projects and celebrati ng his admission co college!! And rew's journey co independence has been one of great joy for all of us and we have been fort un ate co share in his growth and maturity, knowing chat his equi ne partne rs along the way, Doc and Poncho co name a few, have helped! This past Jun e at our Sym phony in che Meadows benefit concert Andrew cook on another new role, spokesperson for High Hopes. The following is a uanscr ipt of his inspiring words:

GoodEvening. My name is Andrew Keefeand I am I9 years old. I have been riding at High Hopesfor I4 years. I startedriding at High Hopesas a form of
physicaltherapyto help with my poor trunk control, my balanceand my tight muscles. One thing that people tend toforget is the major role that thesehorsesplay in therapeuticriding. When I beganriding at age4 I rode Chaussy.My mom remembershow my balanceproblemsseemedto disappearas I sat on top of the moving horse. Over the yearsI have ridden many horsesincluding Doc,for a longperiod of time and now Poncho.Thesehorseshaveprovided balanceand strengthfor me. In addition thesespecial animals have given me confidencein my riding skills and in all otherareasof my life. Riding thesehorseseveryweek has helpedme stay focused on tasks in school,given me balanceandfocus in adaptive ski racingand has allowedme to ride independently while on vacation with myfamily. With this gained confidenceI am able to stand up hereand speak to you this evening. Typicalcompetitivesportsweredifficultfor me so I considerriding thesehorsesmy

Thehorsesat High Hopesare veryspecial. Theyhave had a big impact on my life. Chaussyhelped my balanceand trunk. Doc made me independentand taught me to canter. Theyhave all helpedme to becomean independent rider as well as a confident andfocused high schoolgraduate.

As a timid four year old, Ch arlie was un certai n and hesitant . Each week his Mom, Kathy, wou ld watch carefully from the sidelines, waitin g for chat pot enti ally explosive moment. le never came! The improvements came slowly over time as the relationshi p between N ifty and Charlie, as well as his tru st in his sidewalker, created a safe zone for Charlie that allowed him co grow and blossom with self confidenc e and new-fou nd skills. Charl ie is now riding with a group after schoo l and he continues co shine! Kathy recently wrote H igh H opes a letter tha t shows how important Charlie's steady gains have been:
Charlieis an incrediblysweetLittleguy who at first glanceseemsLikeany otherfiveyear-oLdboy. When he was two and a half he was diagnosedwith Developmental Delays,a significantSpeechDelay and SI Dysfunction.
Wehave watchedhis developmentallytypicaltwin sisterseekout and excelat numerous activitieswhile Charlierecoiled,neverhaving the desireor more importantly the mental orphysicalability and coordinationto participate in any structuredactivities. When he did takepart it would resultin extremefrustrationfollowed by tearsand an overwhelmingsenseoffailure. Thiswas very difficultfor my husband and I to watch.

Last September,when I announced to Charlie that he would be riding at High Hopes

"No, I don't want to!" He did not want to go to schoolthat day nor did he want to get on the bus with his teachersand classmates.Once he arrived at High Hopeshe did not want to leave my side and he was extremelyupset. However, through the encouragement of his teachersand the instructorsat High Hopes he reluctantlyclimbed up on a large

horsenamed Nifty and everythingchanged.He immediately smiled and then he started talking non-stop to his sidewalkers... clearly!He was so happy-it
was absolutelyin-
credible.As the weekswent by he talked about Nifty constantlyand we counteddown the daysuntil he would ride again. Therewas a transformationtaking place in Charlie and people were noticing that he was growing not only stronger,but more outgoing. He was gaining both confidenceas well as a senseof independence. By the time Charlie'sHorseShow Day arrived in May he wasgiving Nifty commands and leading him through and around conesby himself with an enormoussmile on his face. I was so incrediblyproud of him, but more importantly, he wasproud of himself. Charlie had comesofar in such a shortperiod of time. Charlie continuesto ride at High Hopesand we still count down the days until his next session.He has a picture of himself on Nifty next to his bed with his Horse Show and Camp medalshanging.from the sides.High Hopes has truly impacted Charlie'slife in a veryprofound way. It is a magicalplace. f

Throu gh hard work and determ ination Shann a has far exceeded th ese initial goals and, as she stat es below, is n ow ridin g ind ep end ently. H ere is her story of gain ing ind ependence:
I have been riding with High HopessinceI was 6years old When I first started riding thereI had little ability to sit up by myselfdue to not having sturdy balance. I was very timid about trying new things such as learning to trot on the horse. Over theyears throughriding I have learnedhow to keep my balance.I alsolearned that it was alt right to try new things becausethereare alwaysp eoplearound that could help me if I need it. I have also learnedto ride independentlyoverthe years. When I first started riding I had to have a person Leadingthe horseand also twopeople standing with mejust in caseI neededthem. Now I am able to ride the horseoff lead and I only have oneperson walking with me on the side. It has taught me to becomeindependent and how to do things on my own both on and off the horse. I have learnedthat as long as I try something and do not give up I can do it. Riding at High Hopeshas beena greatexperience for me, I have learneda lot about horsesas welt as about myself

Hat s off co you!. .. chose typical salutat ions celebrating grad uation ceremonies have a deeper meaning for And rew Keefe, a Hi gh Hopes ride r for the past r4 years. Andrew, whose jou rn ey began as a young child with cerebral palsy working with a Physical Therapist and a team of high ly trained volunt eers, has become a young adult canter ing coward independence! Andrew 's grad uation from Ston ington High School chis past year marks a milestone, as does his "graduat ion" if you will from Hi gh Hopes. Over the past 14 years Andrew's dreams have become ours. Andrew's hopes and aspirations have been shared with his instructors and volunteers and often his horse . Watching Andrew's riding skills develop and change; trott ing for the first time, learning co steer, being able co pose down the long side of che arena , riding off lead in the ring and the n the uail, and finally canter ing, have mirrored his jo urn ey co adulth ood . H earing of woes in school, writing letters of recommendation for college, sharing academ ic projects and celebrati ng his admission co college!! And rew's journey co independence has been one of great joy for all of us and we have been fort un ate co share in his growth and maturity, knowing chat his equi ne partne rs along the way, Doc and Poncho co name a few, have helped!
