Attention Beginners! How fit do I have to be? How long do I have to train? What equipment do I need? What do I wear? Do I need a wetsuit? What kind of bike do I need? Can I do one on my mountain bike? How do I get started with my swim training? What are good first time races? How can the club help me? HOW DO I GET STARTED? Get the answers to these questions and more at the monthly TCSD Tri 101! The monthly talk is specifically designed to get you started in the sport of triathlon, and our goal is to de-mystify triathlon, and remove the ‘intimidation factor.’ All questions fair game NON-MEMBERS WELCOME!

THE TRIBE, continued place. It was realized then that in this era of Facebook which virtual intelligence webbed together online communities, it was the human element that gave it a voice and spoke in tribal language of endurance and triumph. The LA, DC and other tri clubs by then had momentum and the possibility of winning the Global Club Challenge in San Diego was a worthwhile effort to travel the distance and put pressure on the podium. Fortunately, there was still time to jump start registration again from a club membership of 3,000 that TJ claims th e were duly committed to other causes. The first registration list confirmed only 152 TCSD registrants for the Global Club Challenge. However, one late night research revealed an oversight of 248 registrants due to systematic error. A sigh of relief that the the tribes received the rallying message and that brought the total to 400 and by the race expo, the total count came to 406 strong. Even after the registration salvage, there was history still in the making. Training was about taking
home field advantage and what it meant to live in the birthplace of triathlon. It was a way of life to get up early in the morning, to swim the open water, to bike and run along scenic routes, and recovering in great weather all the day long. In addition to weekly club workouts, a Saturday simulation of the entire race course was organized on location for four weeks leading up to the race, complete with a registration process, a program guide that included a roster, a bike group assignment and continued on page 26 Global Clu b Challang e Award, 1st place.. . of cours e.

Laurie Kearney
My wife, Laurie Kearney, has graciously allowed me to interview her. The San Diego Rock ‘n Roll Marathon will be Laurie’s 190th career marathon. Laurie is a Streaker. The only way to learn about her streaking habit is to read her story. Enjoy! Craig: What was your athletic background before you got involved in running?

CONVERSATION, continued Craig: What led you to your first marathon?
I didn’t want NYC to be my first marathon, so I signed up for the Long Island Marathon in May 1994. I ran 3:58, only because some 50ish guy Laurie: When I broke up with the boyfriend came up behind me around mile 23 and said “I’m from med school, I found myself with a lot going to run under four hours”. That sounded of free time and started signing up for New pretty good to me, so I stuck on his heels for the York Road Runners Club (NYRRC) races on last 5k. I ran 3:42 at NYC and noticed that all weekends. They had a great deal. You paid the women who finished ahead of me had “BQ” $25 every month and you got to do a race next to their names. That’s when I found out every weekend. There was always a 5k, 10k that if I had run two minutes faster, I would and two other distances, usually a 20k or half have qualified for the Boston Marathon. I ran marathon and a five or ten miler. They gave the Long Island Marathon again in May 1995 out trophies to top three in each age group and finished in 3:41:09. FRUSTRATION!! I didand I collected a lot of hardware in the W25n’t want to have the pressure to qualify at 29 AG. I was in line for the port-a-potty before NYC, as that was before chip timing, so I ran a race in the spring of 1994 when a girl introa marathon in Corning, NY in October 1995, duced herself to me as the captain of the New where I met two guys in their 50’s who had York Flyers womens running team and asked if I each run over 500 marathons, and were memwas planning to do the NYC Marathon. I was NYC Marathon 1996 bers of the 50 states marathon club. They entertained me considering signing up, and she mentioned that with their adventures, and I easily qualified with a 3:28, despite their club had speed work and group runs am and pm, and long tripping on a wooden bridge at mile 24 and crossing the finish runs every weekend. I was hooked!

the Long Island Marathon 3 weeks after Boston with a 3:03.
I had a friend who needed to run 3:45 to qualify for Boston who asked me to pace her in Jacksonville in December. It was unseasonably warm, and they had more than double the usual number of runners, being one of the last qualifiers for the 100th Boston, and they ran out of water from mile 1217. We finished in 3:47, despite me doing everything short of carrying my friend the last 5 miles.
Craig: You have run a marathon in all 50 states. What was that experience like?
Craig: What inspired your move from the Big Apple to San Diego?
Laurie: It was a great way to see some out of the way places and meet some unusual people. The east coast was easy. The big sky states like Montana, Nebraska, Wyoming were the hardest, because most had only one or two marathons back then, and were usually a few hour drive from the nearest airport. Fortunately I was around number 40 by the time I met you, as it is not as much fun leaving your squeeze at home to go spend a weekend in Clinton, MS or Green River, WY.
Laurie: I had registered for a medical conference in San Diego in January 1996, and the San Diego (now Craig: What is your favorite Carlsbad) marathon was the marathon? day before the conference started, so I signed up. Laurie: I’ve been running 70 miles a week for the last 15 years. I tried higher mileage when I first moved to San Diego and was training with the UCSD Masters, but I was always getting annoying little injuries. Once I cut back to 70 miles and cut out speedwork, I’ve stayed pretty healthy (knock on wood). My former job made it really difficult to do any long rides, as I worked Monday-Friday 9am-6pm (which was more like 7pm most nights) plus one weekend a month. Since I started working for Rady Childrens Urgent Care in July 2011, I work four days a week, 3pm-11pm on weekdays, noon to midnight weekends, so I have tons of time to train. Now I ride four days a week, run six days a week, and have been trying to get in the pool three days a week from May till September. Craig: You are a Pediatrician for a living. What would you like to see parents do to enable their children to lead a more healthy lifestyle? Laurie: I’d like to see more parents engaging their kids in active play. That’s not necessarily signing them up for gymnastics and soccer and Tri Juniors. Just take your kids to the beach, the park. Play Frisbee or Nerf Football. Get them bikes and let them ride while you run. Show them that exercise is how you play, not a chore to be dreaded like homework. Craig: June third will be your 15th consecutive San Diego Rock ‘n Roll Marathon. You have done
that race every year since it began in 1998 giving you “Streaker” status. Is it a blessing or a curse to be a Streaker? Laurie: Being a streaker is definitely a bit of a burden. My brother got married in NYC the Friday before RnR SD last year and I was determined to get back for the race. Another streaker friend of mine walked the race a few years ago with three broken vertebrae in his neck from a bike crash. I’m not planning to start any more streaks, although I do hope to run Boston every year until I die. Craig: What are your racing future goals? Laurie: I hope to run at least 400 marathons in under five hours. I’m doing IM Canada again this year and I’d like to finish in under 13 hours. I’d like to run the Comrades Marathon in South Africa at some point - maybe my 50th birthday. My main goal in life is to have run at least a mile within 24 hours of dropping dead. Craig: You are a very humble person so we appreciate that you have shared your story. You have given hope to all those aspiring runners out there. Good luck achieving all of your dreams and goals. From a selfish standpoint as your husband I hope you don’t run that last mile for many years. Craig Zelent is a USA Triathlon Level 1 Certified Coach. RACE REPORT: Assisting and Racing with the Czech, continued their heads. After the race, Jan and I went to sushi dinner to carb-up for race day, but not before he did a 6k run. Finally it was race day, all I’m thinking is to finish fast to go home and get Jan for his race at 2pm. Although I’m not volunteering during the amateur race, I can see the fun as you never know who is that dark horse athlete that will be a future star... and to add, the hilarity of amateur racing, especially people falling over on the hill climb or giving up and walking. I love it when during the race I hear a “Go TRI CLUB Go!”, since I’m wearing my TCSD tri-suit with pride. It is this moment I pick up my head from despair and storm harder. It's a great feeling to hear someone Jan, right there with Maca. cheering for you – that way you know you aren't alone out there. I finished, gathered my gear and bike to the car to pick up Jan. When I picked him up, I found out that he did a 6k run in the morning; there is no rest period for these guys! We get there in time, and this time I was assigned to water aide near transition, so I finally got to see all the action. A com-
pletely different person from training, Jan was a machine throughout – one slip and the race is over. On the looped run, I yelled out his name every pass, to replicate the feeling I had when volunteers yelled my name out. He didn't hear me, as he was focused. Although I was happy to see this effect on another athlete from Australia light up when he heard a group of girls go “Aussie, Oye, Oye, Oye!!” I meet up with Jan in the athlete tent afterwards, and since his flight was early the next morning, he wanted to bike home for more training for a triathlon in France next weekend. Unfortunately, he didn't get his goal for the MacBook Pro, but he gathered enough points to secure a spot for London 2012. In the morning, it was a quick breakfast, a bye bye to our non standard American pet - a pig, and drive to the airport for his flight.

SUSAN NORMAN Group: F70-74 It was a “blue carpet“ day as the ITU World Triathlon was contested, the first time, here at Mission Beach, San Diego on May 10-12th. Friday brought the elite women‘s race on a spectator friendly oop course. The last spot for the USA Olympic team, that will be contested in London this summer, was decided when Laura Bennett grabbed the honor when Beach start at Ventura Cove. she crossed the bright blue carpeted finish line in 2 hours 11 seconds. Early the next morning the age group athletes, 2,100 strong, took to the waters of Mission Bay with a 1.5 kilometer swim starting at 6:30am in 64 degree water under cloudy skies. The gun went off for me at 6:40am and we had a quick run to the water for an out and back swim out and back swim. The course was well marked with large buoys and finished on the other side of Ventura Cove followed by a short jog across the sand to the transition one. Because the “older“ triathletes were racked close the swim exit I had a short run up to my bike but a rather long run out of the transition in my bike shoes. Once out of T1 the 40 kilometer bike course started out relatively flat except for a few bridges that span Mission Bay. Once through the residential streets of Pacific Beach things changed drastically as Mt Soledad and it’s 600 foot climb loomed up ahead. Half way up the climb I glanced at my odometer and was shocked to see six miles per hour; it was going to be a long day in the saddle up this ten degree monster. The reward came quicker than I thought when I hit Nautilus street and the very fast decent as I pushed it hard downhill to make up for the slow up hill, which I knew was coming again on the second loop back up to the cross. Once the second ascent was complete it was a fast and fairly flat return on the same residential streets we had gone out on and, after a couple of small bumps, we were back in T2 for a quick change into running shoes and out on the run course. This course headed unde the Glenn Rick bridge and onto the boardwalks of South Mission Beach for a two loop scenic run on the beaches and bays where I am blessed to make my home. Since I live and train here in Mission Beach I was

Shopping For An Umbrella Policy With Underinsured.Uninsured Coverage As previously discussed on my website, you need strong underinsured/uninsured motorist coverage that mirrors your auto liability coverage limits. If you are hit on a bicycle, make sure your auto liability limits match your underinsured/uninsured (UM/UIM) coverage limits. Don’t reduce or “step down” your underinsured/uninsured coverage limits in an attempt to lower your policy premium just to save a few bucks. The savings are not big enough, and the potential expense can be devastating. For an insurance company to drop your underinsured/uninsured motorist’s coverage effectively, they must obtain written permission from you. See Insurance Code Section 11580.2(a)(2). For example, if you have a $500,000 liability policy, don’t reduce your underinsured/ uninsured motorist coverage to save a few dollars of premium.
M a n y bicyclists have expressed thanks for the a b o v e advice, but want to know where to find a back up umbrella policy with the underinsured/uninsured rider if the “bad guy” who hit you failed to have any insurance coverage, or had inadequate limits of coverage. In these economic times, this is all too common. I’ve briefly surveyed several brokers and companies for you and detail them below.* (If you find a better company, let me know!)

COACH’S CORNER: How Compression Apparel Works Courtesy of Sebastian Linke of SLS3 Racing Apparel
(of space reservations)
JUNE 2012 20
In clinical research compression textiles have already been successful for many years. Preferably inactive and lying patients as well as travelers during long distance flights are wearing compression socks to prevent thrombosis. For these people the socks provide a better flow rate in the venous system, smaller venous back pressure, thus a higher venous blood return to the heart. Compression garments use outside pressure on the muscles. This improves blood flow inside the muscles and surrounding connective tissue. The precondition for optimal oxygen and nutrient provision of muscles is an essentially even blood flow. This even blood flow is hard to achieve while standing upright, so several different mechanisms have to support the backflow of blood to the heart. This is so important because 85% of the entire fluid volume in the body is being found in the venous system. External mechanical pressure e.g. from compression garments causes a volume redistribution from superficial to deep venous system. This in turn causes an increase in flow rate in the deep venous system. This effect is often equated to a higher evacuation of metabolic waste products and better oxygen supply in the muscles, ergo: improved performance. During exercise e.g. cycling, running, skiing, etc., another effect is added: Inside the veins are venous valves located in regular intervals. Created in pairs they prevent any venous back flow in the direction of the extremities (legs) which happens in between every heartbeat. At the same time the veins are being compressed through muscle contraction ”muscle vein pump”. This transports the blood volume from one venous valve to the next in the direction of the heart. In the event this mechanism is disturbed or overworked (e.g. physical activity), the veins expand and that makes the venous valves insufficient (limited functionality). This feels like “heavy legs” and they swell. Increased venous back flow to the heart means in reverse better boost potential
in the heart itself and therefore more supply of oxygen and blood in the periphery. What should you pay attention to? Based on the named effects any compression wear in sports is only useful if the pressure flow is anatomically matched. This means the compression is strongest at the ankles and continually gets less over the knee and to the thigh. This is called graduated compression. For compression socks or tights a pressure range of 20-30mmHg at the ankle has been deemed optimal. (1mmHg is the static pressure a 1mm high mercury column develops). What Do We Learn? According to our research (based on the results of 37 international sport compression studies) it is beneficiary to wear compression garments during exercise if you:
1) Want to improve maximal strength, sprint performance and jumping height, 2) Want to influence your oxygen intake and lactate concentration (endurance), 3) Want to increase your stamina. For Compression During Recovery You Should Know That: 1) Lactate concentration tends to go away quicker while wearing compression wear, 2) Muscle pain and swelling is reduced through wearing of compression gear, 3) Maximal jumping, sprint and power performance recover quicker while wearing compression gear. SLS3 (a local San Diego Company) manufactures sport compression and Triathlon race apparel. MADE IN U.S.A. is an important part of our apparel line as we have made a commitment to production of our apparel in America. an early morning start. Even the club’s President, Thomas Johnson, served as bike captain and lifeguard on the paddle board, stirring the waters to simulate the turbulence of swimming in mass. A review of each Saturday simulation highlighted the physical, logistical and mental preparation for the race with tips and inspirational videos. Triathlon coaches donated their time to offer a clinic on bike handling skills, nutrition, transitioning, race day preparation and strategy. Great conversation concluded each session at a post training replenishment gathering. With the new club tri-suits that marked the date of the first triathlon, September 24, 1974, the club’s establishment in 1984, and the seal of the American flag, there was a regional allegiance to the places and landmarks that are the fabric of the triathlon lifestyle in San Diego. Race week arrived as though it were a wedding with jitters over a shortage of volunteers as well developing logistic information. However, there was no more time left to do anything other than what needed to be done as history was unfolding with the royalty of triathlon that gathered at the Hall of Fame Dinner. Either everyone was on board and got things done or stood in awe of the race itself. There was at least in the midst of the excitement a moment of reflection during the singing of the National Anthem that bellowed beautifully under the early morning sky. At the end of the day, Olympic hopefuls were confirmed, TCSD claimed the Global Club Challenge title (see pgs 22-25 for the list of TCSD finishers) and in a spirited passing of the Olympic torch across the ocean the 1,148 age group athletes shared the carpeted finish. There to witness were the founders of triathlon, Don Shanahan and Jack Johnstone. Precisely one week later, eight thousand relay runners would carry the Olympic torch to celebrate all that was given to the whole tribe of humanity.
