Designing Women Charlie Brewer and Karla Porter of Beyond Pink Beyond Pink is Spokane’s first Designer Bra Fashion Show with live and silent auctions, and truly the most fun you can have saving a life! It is the labor of love of two local women, Karla Porter and Charlie Brewer, who wanted to find a better way to monitor breast health. Together these dynamic ladies founded Beyond Pink in 2009 to fund Thermal Imaging exams for local women who cannot afford them. The Beyond Pink FUNraiser has been a big success with 100% of net proceeds going towards the cause. In fact, in five years it and has raised nearly $100,000 which has helped over 325 women get this potentially life saving testing. The 5th annual Beyond Pink fundraising event is coming up on October 10, 2014 from 5 to 9 pm at the Spokane Convention Center. Thermal imaging measures heat signatures emitted from the breast. Since the earliest days of medicine, doctors have known that disease results in abnormal levels of heat rising to the surface.

THERMOGRAPHY Empowering Local Women with Early Assessment for Breast Cancer Risk Every year Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October) gives women an opportunity to access their own risk. While testing is a fact of life, I wanted to focus on breast health and ways to prevent disease, and for tools that offer an earlier warning. With that in mind, I consulted local women’s thermal imaging expert Karla Porter of Insight Thermal Imaging and she shared with me this list of risk factors to consider: Factors That Increase Your Risk: • Dense breasts • Family history of breast cancer (on either your mother’s or father’s side of the family) • Excessive estrogen in the breast tissue • Long-term use of hormone replacement therapy • Personal history of breast cancer or noncancerous breast diseases • Treatment with radiation therapy to the breast/ chest • Exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES) (for example, if you took DES during pregnancy or your mother took DES during her pregnancy with you) • Night-shift work It should also be noted that 85% of women who get breast cancer do NOT have a family history of breast cancer Factors That Decrease Your Risk: • Being older when you first had your menstrual period • Starting menopause at an earlier age • Giving birth to more children, being younger at the birth of your first child, and breastfeeding your children • Getting regular exercise • Maintaining a healthy weight Source - The CDC I understand that mammography has been the gold standard for years but studies show that a Thermogram identifies precancerous or cancerous cells earlier. Combining the two can increase detection of disease as high as 95%. This can reduce additional and unnecessary

testing -- and it doesn't harm the body with radiation. Isn't this what women really want? I interviewed a few women who have tried Thermography to learn more about how it has helped them. Stacy Pelkie 49 from Spokane has been receiving regular mammograms for years when her Naturopath recommended she also consider having a Thermogram. "The first thing I noticed was it is so much less invasive." There is no squeezing or discomfort with a Thermogram, it is as simple as getting your photo taken. “I appreciated the overall education I received about my breast health beginning with the informative report. The color coded photos showed me which areas of my breast I should pay more careful attention to when giving myself breast exams.” Your first Thermogram becomes your baseline and is kept on file to refer back to with each additional report. Over the course of four years Stacy was able to track her risk and spot nodules that were developing that did not show up on her mammogram because they were too small. With this information Stacy has been empowered to make changes in her personal health to reduce her risk of the nodules becoming cancerous. Busy mom Amara Fiegle was working on getting her masters when she met Karla at a Metro Woman After-Event in April. “I had never had a mammogram because I didn’t consider myself to be at risk but was planning to have one since I had just turned 40. Karla impressed me with her knowledge of breast assessment.” It was this awareness that led Amara to have her first Thermogram. “I am so glad I did because it showed one of my breasts was 4 on a scale of 1 to 5 which indicates I could have an 85% chance of developing cancer.” Armed with this knowledge Amara has began to make changes in her diet and is currently working with her doctor to balance her hormones. “My OBGYN referred me to a cancer specialist and I am so grateful that I was able to make changes to my lifestyle before cancer had the chance to develop.”
