A Spokane Movement for Dads of Daughters By: Erin Bishop, Founder and President, The Whatever Girls

A
father’s presence or absence shapes the foundation and direction of his daughter’s life in many ways. His involvement in his daughter’s life tells her she is important and valuable to him. By example, he teaches her how she deserves to be treated by men, how men should act, and how men should show love and attention to women. His absence, or passivity, sends the opposite message. Daughters who do not receive the love, acceptance and nurturing they need from their fathers are more likely to do poorly in school and often look to boys to fill the deep void felt by their father’s absence. Fathers play an important role in setting their daughter up for success. A father’s love and intentionality helps silence the lies that tell his daughter she needs to dress a certain way to capture the attention of a boy, that she needs to give into peer pressure to be accepted, and that she needs to give herself away to be truly loved by a boy. When I founded the Whatever Girls Ministry for teen girls and their moms in 2009, I knew I would be remiss if we didn’t include a special place for dads. In 2013, I founded the “Princess Ball and Sonora Smart Dodd Father of the Year Award” father daughter dance to create an opportunity for dads to treat their daughters to an evening of fun while making her feel like a princess. This event was a springboard to encourage dads to intentionally invest in their daughter’s life.
This year we are excited to announce the addition of a father daughter conference, which will take place earlier the same day of the Princess Ball. Best selling author and speaker Rick Johnson, and Justin Farrell, a licensed independent clinical social worker and child mental health specialist, both writers for the Whatever Girls blog team, will be putting on the conference “She’s My Girl, He’s My Dad: Building a Relationship to Last”. Dads and daughters (12 and up) who attend this conference will learn about the power of the father daughter bond, effective communication techniques, and more. Spokane teens Grace Bishop and Hanna Chaffin will be at the conference to share about the connection between social media and sex trafficking and the importance of respecting your dad. Joining us again this year at the Princess Ball are special guests State Representative and owner of Dutch Bros. Coffee of Spokane, Kevin Parker, and Rick Rydell of KXLY’s “Rick Rydell Show”. My husband Roger, who oversees “Whatever Dads”, and I would like to invite all dads in the Spokane area to attend these events, join our movement and commit to intentionally raising their daughter. The Princess Ball is Saturday, November 15 from 6:30-9 at the Lincoln Center Monroe Ballroom. The conference is the same day.
