The New Organic You Family Features

Anytime is a good time to reflect on your life and think about what you can do to become happier and healthier. One thing that can benefit you, your family, your community even the planet, is eating more organic food. And it can be easier than you think! To be USDA-Certified Organic, food must be grown without toxic synthetic pesticides and herbicides, genetically engineered ingredients (also called GMOs), antibiotics or artificial growth hormones. “Simply put, organic is better for you and the environment. When you’re eating organic foods, you’re keeping harmful chemicals and GMOs out of your body and some studies have shown that organic farming produces more nutrient- dense crops,” said Arjan Stephens, executive vice president, sales and marketing at Nature’s Path. “Organic farming supports a healthier planet by not adding chemicals to the air, water and soil, as well as keeping them away from you and future generations.”

Here are three ways to go organic: Look Inside Your Pantry: Fresh fruits and vegetables may be the first things you think of, but don’t forget about your pantry. Staples like flour, sugar, vegetable oil, peanut butter and more can be swapped out for organic options and make it easier to have organic food as part of every meal. Start With What You Eat Everyday: A good place to start is with the foods you consume everyday. If you and your family start each morning with a bowl of cereal, try eating organic cereal, and add fresh organic fruit. 4

Think Outside the Cart: You can find many options by shopping at one of the farmers markets in the area. Maybe try your hand at growing your own food, or find a farm that offers community-supported agriculture (CSA).

You may think that organic food costs more, but consider the health and environmental benefits. Going organic can be easy, delicious, and good for you and the planet.

Be Kind to Bees

There are many types of bees and most have two things in common – they are excellent pollinators and they generally are not aggressive. In fact, bees rarely sting humans unless threatened or accidentally crushed. Pollinators, including bees, play a crucial role in flowering plant reproduction. Without them, we wouldn’t have many of our favorite fruits, vegetables, nuts, and berries; all of which depend on pollinators. Tips for helping bees: • Include native flowering plants in your landscape, such as: Lanceleaf coreopsis, Butterfly milkweed, Joe Pye weed, Purple coneflower, New England aster, Highbush blueberry, and pussy willow. Bees will also love many vegetables and herbs in your garden. • Reduce or eliminate the use of pesticides (including herbicides), especially when plants are in bloom and pollinators are present. • Allow dandelions to grow in your lawn when they arrive in spring. Dandelion blooms provide nectar and pollen for bees early in the season when nothing else is blooming. However, mow dandelions prior to seed formation to encourage movement of pollinators into the garden. • Install a bee house or pollinator habitat to attract and maintain solitary bees, such as mason bees. • Leave a patch of bare earth for ground nesting solitary bees and for other bees that gather mud for constructing egg cells. 6

• Provide a source of water for bees, such as a small pond or shallow bird bath with stone inside to ensure bees can make their way to the water’s edge safely. • Don’t clip back and burn stems from shrubs, plants and bushes – the hollow stems might be used by bees for overwintering. Instead, cut them back in spring if you have to, and leave them (un-burned) in a pile at the back of the garden.

Tips for Summer Gardening Success Family Features

When temperatures peak and the summer sun shines throughout the day, it can put a burden on the plants growing in your garden. But there are ways to keep your garden thriving even in the summer heat. Although having the right tools and a commitment to gardening may be the most important rules, these tips can serve as simple, helpful ways to keep your garden growing strong. Know what to grow. Instead of gardening on a hunch and wasting resources on plants that simply don’t grow well or bloom in the summer, research which flowers, plants and bushes will succeed. Ask for help at the local plant nursery when you are shopping. Water early. By watering in the morning, you can soak the soil and help plants stay hydrated throughout the hottest parts of the day, rather than allowing them to dry out in the heat and attempting to rehydrate them later. Keep potted plants cool. When sitting in the sun, some containers may absorb heat, sometimes causing the plants within to dry out and become overheated. Lightly mulching the pots can help, as can placing the pot in a saucer full of moist sand. 12

Protect against pests. While it can be difficult to keep pests and insects out of your garden it can help keep both you and your plants healthy. Repellants are an obvious option, but some may negatively affect the growth of plants. Instead, try maintaining healthy soil and getting rid of standing water (which can attract mosquitoes) to actively deter insects. By staying committed and following these tips you can help keep your garden lush and growing even during the summer’s hottest days.
