FIT TIP TIRED OF BEING TIRED?

With school back in session, kids’ schedules, and changes in weather and schedule, you may be feeling a little more fatigued than usual. Researchers and trainers agree; whether you exercise in the morning, afternoon or evening, small changes in your routine can keep you from suffering midday blahs. Just do Something – During the week, try to mix 2-3 high-intensity workouts with lighter workouts like yoga, walking or flexibility training. But, remember that even 10 minutes is better than nothing! Opting for the stairs, upper-body stretches, or going for brisk 5-10-minute walks are good options. The heart begins to beat faster, delivering more blood and oxygen to working cells. This releases hormones like endorphins, which not only help people feel good, but also reverses fatigue. Mix it Up - Mixing up your workouts throughout the week—cardio, core and flexibility, rotating with endurance, strength and

stretching, not only keeps you energized, but also helps you burn calories all week. Keep Blood Sugar Levels Even - Nutrition is as important as exercise to keep from feeling tired. Eat every 2-3 hours, a snack one hour before a workout, and a healthy meal an hour after workout, will keep your blood sugar levels from plummeting resulting in an energy drop. What Goes In - The wrong food can leave you feeling depleted. Forget pastries or fast food lunches! Protein is key to start your day. Remember to sip water during workouts and throughout the day. Dehydration can also cause fatigue. Staying energized involves trial and error, but making good choices during the day and getting enough sleep at night will help battle the 3:00 slump! It’s Fall…Why am I Still Sneezing? It’s fall, and the blooms of summer have faded. So how come you’re still sneezing? Fall allergy triggers are different, but they can cause just as many symptoms as in spring and summer. What Causes Fall Allergies? Ragweed is the biggest allergy trigger in the fall. Though it usually starts to release pollen with cool nights and warm days in August, it can last into September and October. About 75% of people allergic to spring plants also have reactions to ragweed. Even if it doesn’t grow where you live, ragweed pollen can travel for hundreds of miles on the wind. For some people who are allergic to ragweed, certain fruits an d vegetables, including bananas, melon, and zucchini, can also cause symptoms. Mold is another fall trigger. You may think of mold growing in your basement or bathroom --

damp areas in the house -- but mold spores also love wet spots outside. Piles of damp leaves are ideal breeding grounds for mold. Don’t forget dust mites. While they’re common during the humid summer months, they can get stirred into the air the first time you turn on your heat in the fall. They can trigger sneezes, wheezes, and runny noses. You can take prescription steroid nasal sprays, antihistamines, decongestants and immunotherapy, which can all help treat seasonal allergies. You can also buy some allergy medications without a prescription, but talk to your doctor to make sure you get the right one. Decongestant nasal sprays, for example, should only be used for 3 days. If you use them longer, you may actually get more congested. And if you have high blood pressure, some allergy drugs may not be right for you. Source: WebMD (edited)

GIVING BACK

W

Photo by David Winters: Amy Massey and Mark Thornell, Exec Director at the Fowler YMCA

hen Amy Massey, her husband, Lewis, and their 3 kids moved to Peachtree Corners and joined the Fowler YMCA in 1999, little did they know it would be a relationship to span decades. Amy, and her team (she’s quick to give accolades to her team) has worked tirelessly and raised almost $200,000 for the Fowler Y. Amy is a DIFFERENCE MAKER! We caught up with this dynamic mom and asked a few questions… What was your motivation to start the GLOW Run? Well, pretty much the day after we moved into Peachtree Corners, we joined the Fowler Y. Over the next several years our kids played soccer, attended summer camps, special events, Parents’ Night Out, etc. at the Fowler Y. We loved everything about it. A few years later, I was asked to join the Board of Directors. During my 10 years on the Board, I learned of so many children and families’ whose lives were positively impacted by the Fowler Y. They actively sought out kids who were falling through the cracks and brought them in for before/after school programs; effectively turning their lives around and setting them on a course for success in school and life. 14

YOUR LOCAL LIFESTYLE • HEALTH • WELLNESS MAGAZINE

What’s the connection between you, the Fowler Y, and running? So, I love running. When I was very young, my parents took my siblings and me to a local track every day and encouraged us to run. They signed us up for an AAU running club, and I’ve been running ever since. I wanted to combine my passion for running and getting kids outside, running, and being active, with my passion for the programs and services at our YMCA. How did the GLOW Run come to be? I ran regularly with a group from the Y and in 2012 recruited some of them to help start a fund-raising race. Our first race in the spring of 2012 was a morning 5k that attracted about 300 people. We wanted to do something to set ourselves apart from all the other races. In 2013, we had our first Light Up the Corners GLOW Run, which attracted 450 participants and it has grown steadily every year to nearly 1,400 this year. How have you seen the GLOW Run benefit the PTC community? In addition to raising money for the Y, we have the satisfaction of seeing this race become a family-friendly tradition that fosters a love of running in our youth. It’s been an amazing experience to be a part of something that is laying the groundwork for a lifetime of health and fitness activities! This has certainly been a labor of love for me, but really, it wouldn’t be a reality without the generous support of so many local businesses, The Forum and City of PTC, race planning committee, and the 100+ wonderful volunteers.
